Salutations to the Faith No More vocalist Mike Patton for letting this one loose on Ipecac, the label he originally co-created to act as a recording base for one of his favourite groups, The Melvins. Patton also guest stars deep in the marvellous murk of Colossus of Destiny, a single-track live improvisation which veers from bouts of severe guitar wounding and drum kit bombast, to gashes of electronic storm and calm, occasionally interspersed with some heavy porno soundtrack sampling and tweaking. The whole is a glorious grinding mess with no real beginning or end. It must have been especially thrilling to commence it in real time. A true sense of commitment and musicianship holds this cumbersome creation aloft; and as soon as the Melvins have managed to put it down, you're panting for them to heave it back up again. - Edwin Pouncey
