intersesting fact about Harvey Milk - i met Steven Tanner the bassist and asked him about the Melvins influence, he said that the singer/guitarist wrote all the songs and had never even heardthe Melvins!!

not sure if i believe that....

Right now I'm listening to Dragonaut from Sleep. It's on the Stoner Revolution compilation. There's some good sludge on there. No one band can cover it but a mighty good compilation could maybe approximate the dynamic variety that The Melvins posess.

ok
first of all, SLEEP are nowhere near the melvins. there a stoner doom band, with a bad sound (Dopesmoker is ok tho)
second of all what do you mean favorite melvins-sounding band? I mean, bands only sound like the sludgey / ozma / gpt melvins era. then, they started to do shit that nobody even tries to imitate.

third of all, I think you guys should check BURNING WITCH.
some of you might find it boring, like almost every O'Malleys project, but if your into SUNN, you would love the WITCH!!!! one of the heaviest bands if you ask me.
you probably wont hear the melvins in them at the very first listen, but if you listen carefully you will. I think THE MELVINS and EARTH were a big influence to Omalley and you can hear his heavy-ass droning riffage whether its the blackdoom act THORRS HAMMER (beauty!!!!!!!), THE WITCH, KHANATE, OR SUNN.
basiclly TH, BW and KHNT are SUNN with drums. Im not saying it as a bad thing tho. its fuckin HEAVY!

otherwise if some of you havent already, check EYEHATEGOD, HARVEY MILK and NEUROSIS!!!!!!!!!!

This thread is funny. Everyone - including myself I believe - is just name dropping his/her favorite bands and none of 'em come close to the Melvins. Yesterday I was listening to Burning Witch who, according to Kurva, sound very familiar to the Melvins, and I just couldn't hear it. Probably everyone just tries to hear a Melvins-influence, something I do as well, to try to make that band sound better.

yeah, I blew chunks the second the drummer started playing.
I dont mind bands covering songs, but I think they should at least play it right or make an entirely different version of the song.

mastodons version just stunk.
and their cover is a poor rip off of Martin Kvammes Tomahawk design.

I think Mastodon did a decent job, and watching them live for about two hours and then hearing them playing the first chords of The Bit was freakin' awesome.

And what cover do you mean, Leviathan? That's not the real cover, just a sleeve. I also see some similarities now you've mentioned it but it seems like you also, probably, unconsiously, try to compare things with the stuff YOU like.

Which video was that? I've never seen any videos by them, except for a few seconds via their website, but the quality wasn't that good. And how could you possibly judge a band how they are live, by watching a video of them?

Look, I don't need any arguments why you don't like Mastodon. I feel that if one doesn't iike a band, he needs exactly zero arguments to feel that way. But judging a band by a video sounds weird. I think I've seen enough dumb videos by bands who still rock live, can't think of any right now, though.

Title: Re: your favorite melvins-sounding band

I did admit ir, but I refuse to admit it's a rip off. There's a difference between between a rip off and a smilaritie, isn't there?

For example. have you heard the new Oasis single, Let There Be Love? I'm sure you haven't, 'cause neither did I (Rembrandt Pussysomething pointed me at it). Anyway,  it's a straight Mr. Bungle rip-off, Retrovertigo to be precise. Now, if Retrovertigo would have been a Metallica song, they already would have been fucked, but I'm pretty positive Oasis don't listen to Mr. Bungle, so I consider it as a similarity.

I did admit ir, but I refuse to admit it's a rip off. There's a difference between between a rip off and a smilaritie, isn't there?

Check this out, I spotted this cover some time ago and thought it had the same look and feel as the trilogy cover but couldn't find it when I wanted to post it when this thread was going on.
