Ever wondered why Melvins often start and finish their European tours in Wales or the west of England? It's because their backline is stored in Bristol when it's not in use.

who  temporarily filled in the bass guitar when kevin was booted and what other bands has he or she played in?
Title: Re: Melvins Trivia!
Post by: GrimReaper on December 21, 2011, 11:45:35 PM
At the Capitol Hill block Party the summer of 2004 I figured Kevin was having issues. During the 2004 summer tour this board lit up like a Christmas trees with rumors of Kevin leaving the band, last of Tour cancelled as well as the European Tour. At Jello's 50th B-day DSS and Adam Jones on second guitar. In 2005 David Scott Stone played during the tour with Jello, Altamont opening. I don't really know what David's band history is. The first time I saw him play with the Melvins was at the EMP Sky Church. A $5.00 show and DSS played a piece of sheet metal and a long wire.
Title: Re: Melvins Trivia!
Post by: bUTTHOLEmAN on December 22, 2011, 12:20:32 AM
I'd guess that Dave was introduced through Mackie, via their old band.  Adam had played a few dates with them in 2000/2001, and then like Grim said, Adam and Sir DSS played in 2004.  I know they played together with the melvins at the UCLA / kranky klaus show.

If I'm not mistaken, it was Glen the psychic that correctly predicted Kevins imminent departure.  Something about how taking two or three or six shots in a row at the bar before a show isn't normal.   :?

off topic, and probably off base -

The guys had a certain kind of heaviness in the sound on that tour that didn't seem to be there in 2003.  I remember The Fool... being played slower than ever before or since, and the Pigs material had an ominous quality.  The problems in the band might have been showing themselves on stage, OR not.

I have noticed a trend in the sound and performances when Buzz seems unhappy, or when there seems to be tension between them and the bass player at the time.

I am probably wrong about all of this of course, but they definitely were something to see on that tour.

I forgot he played with the Melvins on the 2x4 tour, first saw him at the Showbox in Seattle during that tour. Crybaby was new and Hank III opened, Leif Garret sang a few tunes.

That Chris you mean is totally unrelated to the hint I gave.

Ozma is correct. Chris Dodge is the man.
And as to when and why he pooped, I honestly don't know. It's just a song title of Spazz.
Funny thing is I was into them way before the Melvins. That's how the circle closes.
East West Blast Test with Dave Witte was interesting too, just not records I could listen to all the way through.

I confess that was JUST before I discovered them, and a friend (who I met years later) got to see them on that tour in toronto. Told me they did about 20 minutes of feedback and cleared the whole place before belting out the loudest set he's ever heard, and Dale did a huge drum solo too!

"In the liner notes for the Mangled Demos, you mentioned 'Dan Raymond.' Specifically, you wrote 'We can't forget Dan Raymond.' Why? What did he do? A) Thanks for reading the liner notes! Dan is one of my oldest friends, in fact we've been friends for about 30 years which means he's known me since way before I ever played guitar or thought at all about being in a band. He still lives in the same town we grew up in and has traveled a lot with us on various tours just to hang out. Dan is a strange guy."

Long time ago. So, perhaps memory fails. Maybe it was just "Cottonmouth". Though I distinctly remember Dale coming out front & center w/ his Gold Top.

I'll try and dig out the recordings in the next couple days an' check that shit out ...

The most common bootleg video of that tour seems to be the one from La Luna in Portland. I remember it being pretty good. If I still had a copy I'd send it to you, but someone else on the board might be able to hook you up with it if you can't find it online.

Could it be anything but Eggnog?  I mean, it IS candy.  Well, candy printed wrapping paper, but still.

Then again, the little fish on ASA remind me of swedish fish.

And looking at HAT reminds me of neapolitan ice cream.....

In 2004, Meomi (Vicki Wong and Michael Murphy based in Vancouver, Canada) made 200 Button Sets for Melvins' summer US tour of that year. Because the tour was cut short, we have no idea whether all 200 sets were sold or not.

We simply don't know.

Since then, Meomi have gone on to design the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games mascots.

From Urban Dictionary:

1. Melvin

A boy you love to look at: his skin is perfecty smooth and tan, his eyes are dark and dangerous and his smile is to die for. He's very smart, especially in creative writing, even if he is somewhat an overachiever. He loves soccer and is fiercely loyal to his friends. With just a wink he'll melt your heart and you will promise him your virginty; he can own your vagina with just a glance.

girl 1: omg did you see that guy?? he winked at me and my vagina belonged to him

girl 2: oh yeah that happened to me yesterday, he's such a melvin.

2. Melvin

Definition of awesome; just simply amazing!!!

Look at matt he is so melvin.

As far as I know he's sticking with the EGC guitars.
Welcome to the board, by the way :)

On the road, yes.  In the studio he has said he'll use many different kinds of guitars.
I think the only album where it explicitly stated he only used EGC guitars was Freak Puke.

Weasel dust would almost make a decent band name.

The band Buzzov*en is not named after Buzz and the song Oven from Ozma:

One more question: what does the name Buzzov*en mean, anyway? I read two explanations: (1) it was a melding of "buzzed often"; (2) it means "buzz oven," like a cooker.
It's two words I put together that I thought sounded like a cool name for a band. No deep meaning.

He would be a fantastic cameo. Especially with a sneer and a flash of that gold tooth!

What do the Melvins have to do with McDonald's? Was it a poster I can't remember?

Melvins are name-dropped in Felix Van Groeningen's latest film, Beautiful Boy. A co-worker saw it last night and said there was a Melvins poster on Shef's wall and vulture.com says we get to see Melvins albums on his shelf. The Maggot is on his wall at 1:39 in this trailer:

Puredigitalsilence were a South Korean electronic band, named after the Melvins track on Prick. There's an article about them here (https://daily.bandcamp.com/2019/01/14/another-planet-distribution-label-profile/) and you can listen to them here (https://youtu.be/yjHnLqptdEY/)

Excerpt:
In 2016, Kim Changhee, one of the co-founders of local experimental electronic music collective and record label dingn\dents—and a journeyman musician in his own right—introduced Cambou to an extremely rare album called Circumfluence by Puredigitalsilence. “Kim [Changhee] has been in IDM groups like Damirat and Toxicbiasfleurivy,” Cambou explains. “He’s quite low-key but he runs WATMM [We Are The Music Makers], the longest-running electronic music event in Seoul, and when he was young he was quite into the indie music scene. He found this album, liked it for many years, and later on got friendly with the band members.”

“I come from a psych music background,” Cambou reflects. “When I was younger, I was really into the shoegaze end of psych. Circumfluence combined the classic druggy shoegaze feel with a very modern and contemporary ambient sound. It’s very finely tuned and super DIY, but extremely emotional.” He had to reissue it.

Puredigitalsilence was a collective of experimental musicians led by Choi Joonyong and Hong Chulki, and named in reference to a Melvins song. In 1997, Choi and Hong, then playing together as Astronoise (one of the country’s pioneering noise music acts), teamed up with Yang Yongjun and Jeong Eunju. Using the sounds of U.K. bands like My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3 as a jumping-off point, they folded what we can retrospectively view as ambient and drone-synth elements into the mix, and emerged with sprawling epics that often stretched well over 10 minutes.
