Title: BULLHEAD
Post by: turnacus on August 11, 2003, 12:35:20 PM
Its a great album, no denying that. But couldn't it use a remix?

It doesn't sound a bit flat to any of you all?

i totally agree, but i think that they shouldnt dick too much around with it, because its a really calm and "soft" album and special :P
maybe they could rerecord it :P

yeah, it does sound flat and seems quieter than their other records... it saps the power out of some awesome songs like anaconda... i would masterbate over a rerecorded version of anaconda...

no.
any idea of it sounding flat disappears when you turn the fucker right up. one of my favorite sounding recordings too, the instruments all sound good and sit in the mix well. i don't generally agree with remixing albums after so long because your perspective of how the album should sound is changed over time, maybe influenced by things after the fact. i prefer it to be a statement made at the time, it's positives and flaws making it what it is. and i hope you didn't mean that dance sort of remix... :(

Hey turnacus, did you find your copy of bullhead or did you have to buy a new one? Also, does anybody know what exactly is the blue image on the cd itself?

It looks like a condom.

hmmm, its weird. The production makes Exocrism sweet, but it kinda fucks over anaconda. I didn't know how sweet anaconda was until i heard it live.

The production value of a record is just as much a part of its musicality and its atmosphere as any other aspect of the record.  It is what it is and it is the melvins.(?)  The image on the CD is a condom and if you have a copy of Bullhead on vinyl you can tell that the border that frames the back of the record is a bunch of condoms (in the wrapper) as well.

A remix could just as easily sound worse.
Title: Bullhead - Thoughts?
Post by: huber on August 29, 2003, 07:53:54 AM
worse compared to what? if you add this "freshness" it would be the album as is-compared to the new version. only by fucking with it can you see if it's worse. ha...or better...
and what's the concept behind the remix..what would you want to get out of it, or change? bring in some brand new digital protools and add some sterile freshness.
now if the topic was who would like to sit in a studio and play around with the master for fun i'd be in on it!

i think if bullhead was rereleased today it would kick the hell out of any other album. if you ask me it should get a grammy this year, why not.and for good measure they should let em perform anaconda.it would jumpstart the whole industry.every sorry ass band would realize that they have been making crappy music and would immediately give up because there is no use in trying to top the melvins.

Bullhead is definatly one of the records that really turned me onto the Melvins. I love the way it sounds.

I'm not saying its bad, but I thin it could benefit from a remix. I don't know, it sounds flat to me. Look at the job Iggy did to Raw Power. Good shit.

but i don't care either way. I'm listening to it now.

hell yeah, bullhead is one of the greatest ever.  needs a remixing though, it's just not as loud as say stoner witch.  i have to turn my stereo up, but that's a good thing.  every song is a classic.  i always hear about covers of zodiac, like brutal truth.  but that is a melvins original yes?  boris! anaconda! your blessened!  they need to play that shit in church.

what's weird is that Eggnog is so much louder and was released the same year by the same record label...maybe melvins wanted it like that?
Title: Oh i love you Bullhead
Post by: peeping tom on November 18, 2003, 08:50:22 AM
yeah maybe they did.  the whole album has a real doomy feel to it.  i love how when i put on a melvins record it has a certain feel to it.  and each one is different.  that feeling is what seperates them from every other band that ever played a note.

Well I daresay Boris and Hung Bunny would do away with many a casual listener but nonethless, yeah, great hard rockin' records. Bullhead was the first Melvins album that made me truly appreciate the band and was one of the first few I owned IIRC.

When I was 14 it took me like 3 goes to get through Hung Bunny...I love how patience develops with age...

I don't care that i have to turn the volume up a little for Bullhead, I love that CD!  It's one of my favorite Melvins albums.  They have a good way of making "every note count".  Even Boris, which is 3 notes for most of the song, is just so hypnotic!

Do the Melvins still play any stuff from Bullhead live?

I was lead to believe that it was the best Melvins album of them all.
Obviously I went into it with great expectations. Sadly though,

1. Stoner Witch
2. Prick
THEN
3. Bullhead

I liked the songs. I Liked the album. It was good, But it was not great.

Dale might have used a weird recording technique to achieve this, or simply when he hits them, something on the kit vibrated like a loose nut. Personally, I have been curious myself.

Title: Dales cymbals on bullhead.
Post by: Ligature on August 08, 2004, 08:33:27 AM
its not a ribbon crasher. ive heard this too, and wondered what it was

i think he's hitting the ride cymbal bells and has a "high-to-low" pitch effect on them. it would have been done in the studio to get that "piiiiiiiiiiing" sound. no no normal cymbals, not even cracked ones, can make that sound.
Title: Dales cymbals on bullhead.
Post by: Vcavallo on August 08, 2004, 10:57:08 AM
cracked cymbals definitely do not make this sound.  all the cymbals on my kit are cracked and it is very annoying because they do not ring for very long.  cracked cymbals, while cool-looking are quite frustrating when not mixed with intact cymbals.  you just can't get over the music with them.  arg.

While we're on the topic of Dale's cymbols, he has also used these weird cymbols, that kind of sound like a fucked up sloppy hi hat hit, or a splash cymbol being hit and choked very quickly after the hit. He plays it alot in Let It All Be. Does anybody know what I'm talking about, and what kind of cymbol it is?

a ribbon crasher. 3 pieces of overlapping steel on top of eachother. sounds like a mix between a small (4 inch or so) splash cymbal and a hi-hat. it hooks on to his floor tom.

The ribbon crasher rocks. I can't think of any drummers that use them regularly(like a hi-hat) the way Dale does. I had to freeze-frame the Salad DVD to figure out what it was made of. There's one on ebay right now with one bid at $24.

i think you may be talking about the roto-tom rims. he used to use these -- when you hit them, it makes a "ping" sound that kinda reverberates for a while. i know they're on "bullhead," particularly at the end.

The use of the Crasher highlights the imagination of Dale's drumming, I guess most drummers just can't figure out where to use it. People I have seen use it recently though are, Dave Lombardo w/Fantomas (particularly on Fire walk with me), the guy from Slipknot (band he would most like to tour with - Melvins!! see Drummerworld.com) and the drummer from British band Muse, who uses it most like Dale (but he ain't no Crover beast).

I bought one, more out of curiousity than anything else. It's a lot of fun, but it rusts very quickly. I thought this was a bad thing at first, then I saw Dales which is covered in rust and still sounds cool.

Comes in two sizes by the way, 11" and 15". I am such a geek.

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering whether there are any drummer geeks here that know what the fuck that incredible cymbal/bell sound is at the begining of Your Blessend.

I have tried forever to find out but have got nowhere.

I've also seen Dave Lombardo use the same sound on a drum video, but I can't remember which one... in the video he mentions that he used to practise his double bass drum playing buy keeping time to a metronome and gradually incresing the tempo over time.. in case that rings any bells... pun intended ;)

Thanks,
Jimi Mook

maybe it is just one of his smaller cymbals with some type of studio manipulation, because i've never heard that sound anywhere other than a melvins recording.

i think this has come up before and i think we all decided that it is studio manipulation, though it seems unlikely.  it also sounds too real and harmonic to be an electronic thing, considering the date and budget.  it is just another mystery of crover's legendary drumming.  just like the drumbeat to boris (in relation to the guitar).  when you really listen to , you just think, what the fuck is going on here!?  it is so hard to make sense of.

actually being a drummer for a really long time, that sound is a bell or the bell section of a cymbal with a large crack in it.  the edges created by the crack resonate together to leave that secondary sound.  i would get a friend to make bells for me using the bells of old cymbals and if a crack still persisted or it wasnt shaped perfectly round, it would create interesting sounds.

listened to Bullhead for the first time in about 2 months today, at recommendation of a friend. i have been stuck in an Ozma/GPT and 26 songs groove as of late.. but Bullhead knocked my socks off.

God damn! How AWESOME is that whole album. A masterpiece.

What do you people think of Bullhead?

i know we've been over this before, but Bullhead has to be my least favorite of the early Melvins records....the sole reason being the production, sorry to say.  The songs themselves are awesome and absolutely kill LIVE, but no matter how you adjust the settings on your stereo, that album is always lacking something.  That to me is the key when determining when an album has stellar production.....no matter how you have the EQ set on your stereo, the sound will still just totally kick your ass.  And as much of a reputation as an asshole Steve Albini may have, he manages to get it right in the studio most of the time(as far as my ears can tell, at least).  I was listening to some Jesus Lizard earlier today and was reminded of this.

Wow, I think Ligature is one of my all time favorite Melvins songs. Just really heavy and simple. Actually, it's that kind of sound that really got me into the band. Bullhead rules.

Actually, I think It's Shoved is the weakest song on the album. I know that's a lot of people's favorite Melvins song, but it's just not as interesting to me as a lot of others. It almost sounds like a single. Don't get me wrong, I like the song, but I don't think it's one of their best.

Ligature IS Bullhead. That song sticks out as an even weirder, heavier tune than the rest of them on the album. I named my cat Ligature.

BORIS

I'd like to take I like to feel wanted
Taken up and take them tall
I like to make a lot of generate the one-eyed mouse
Build 'em up and let 'em fall
Just lay 'em on and leave the linen tight
Taken up and take them tall
Generate, lay them flat like monkey man
Leave 'em built, right, stand 'em tie them down
It's like sin.

Boris likes a lot of little things to kick
Mix every single one that he could ever need
Boris feed
Let friend, spoon, friend, stone, lie
Let's make/take, let's feel wanted
Taken up and take 'em tall
My shake, mines monkey paddle
Boris knows and Boris likes it all
It's like sin.

It's a killer she's a killer maker
It reaches in and takes from the back of your mind
I'm not awake still alive
20 bucks has the back and see the lines
I got a small, got what they call the lack
A lack o' halfway cooked bullets on my own
I say I can't but I really mean I won't
In their arm or maybe up a nose
I see it all
See Boris has way of seeing through my eyes
He touches in a fashion, a master of mime
Manipulating me, my arms and legs and spine
He's got you pawed
I'm sinkin shoulder wake like a spin on through
Let 'em hum.

ANACONDA

I could sort of lore a lie
What tells a mine to my.

Raw soaked in malt it's a heartbreaker
Cuz she could lonely sell
Like moanin' worst in lie sin
Cuz she's a queen
Like he knows it sussin wonay laws
Cuz he's a hull singer
Little pigs and lick a little heartleaks
I just fought to enjoy.

I sony mine and lie still though
And I could suck a world through the same bill
Like sony was it won't it
Little queen
And little heart tick sender coffin loud.

LIGATURE

I can see you in like a rell
Like a man doe in law
And row
Like some dance stone in less
And row stole
I might nemo men coz
And lacks
Coz I can see you in like a bred
Check my memolee laws
And row sow
Low munned in south it now
And roast to sell
Coz my man'll be law
And row sow

IT'S SHOVED

For the love maze for me to show you
Look show
Can't even handwrite
I got somethin'
You got holy doll
I'm a leather man
Guarentee
Then when we caught a big pack of bad cats
Always raising paws
Always chucking tails
Kiss that little head
Make 'em Demerol
Eat some Petromalt
So they see

ZODIAC

Like the dead
We'll solve no dess
It's like a ??  let it
Lost in so
Like a pour-ess
Like a mow low led
Moss walls
Like a sez
A poor song yeah
Lost
In paradise
And rock a Thomas
At home
Walls moan like a ??  man
Like a tee sure one lag
Hoarse man
Like a toe this
Keeps only

Cost
In both solids
Like a warzone
Lost mole
And both san
...miracles...
Cross man goes like a toad
...only...
Lost...
Like...???????????

...Oh yeah
I forgot to get my pill
Got to go downtown...

YOUR BLESSENED

I like your hands
Mr Cancer see
Fell the timber
I felt you be
And if you were
Just like your will
We can end up
And we can turn up
And we can bleed

When man's only distant relative
Has descended on his own
You will know

Your blessened
I can feel your pain
You're man-like
You're friendly
You're me

Man, and I thought I was obsessed!

Most of the lyrics, or at least a good portion, are all goobly gook. He didnt have lyrics for some of those tunes and just did it like that.

I reembered that record was the turning point, they became less complicated and more simple. No one complained too much, except in Europe, where they were told that they "sold out".

Nice use of the ice bell, too!

The Green Manalishi

Now when the day goes to sleep
And the full moon looks,
The night is so black darkness cooks.
You come creepin' around,
Making me do things I don't wanna do.
I can't believe that you need my love so bad.
You come sneakin' around,
Tryin' to drive me mad.
Haunting all my dreams,
Making me see things I don't wanna see.

Cuz you're the Green Manalishi
With the two-pronged crown.
All my trying is up,
Are you bringin' this down?
Take all my lovers away,
Leave me here
Just tryin' to keep from following you.

something like, "a lack of half-way good, but it's all my own"

well maybe it does.
ozma is really sexual.  especially "a picture of jesus as an indian over my bed, as i play with parts of myself."  grunt grunt

Melvins leave the Northwest and move to San Fransisco and release Bullhead on Boner Records.

1) San Francisco is famous for its liberal views on sexuality.

2) Boner Records is named after a hard penis, its logo is a hard penis.

3) Bullhead slang for a penis with a large head.

4) Cover art a basket of fruit. Fruit: a derrogatory name for male homosexuals.

5) c/d art an unrolled condom. condom male birth control method

6) back cover 144 packs of unopened condoms arranged in a square.

7) square root of 144 = 12

8) Anaconda reference to a penis, size large

9) Ligature: dangerous sexual practice of cutting off blood flow to head while beating off.

10) Boris lyrics: about a penis? debateable

11) It's Shoved - use of penis during intercourse

What happened to the boys from Aberdene when they went to SF? Who cares. They had Lorax to look after them.

Bullhead = masterpiece.

if you have a favorite song from bullhead, tell why.
bullhead is one of my favorite albums of all time, so that's why i picked this album to be the topic.
i'd have to say boris. (currently at the moment)
when i try to "define" the melvins to other people, i usually refer to this song (even though the melvins aren't just like this one song)
it was an interesting choice too to be first on the album.  usually bands would be opening with a really fast or attention getter, not a slow song in this case.
i didn't like it at that much at first, but now i love it.
whenever people call the melvins sludge metal you can refer to this.

They started with slow tracks on GPT and Ozma, too.

As for best song, "If I had an exorsism" - simple yet effective. However Bullhead really does not have a bad track.

Bullhead is a horn 'o plenty no doubt. Hard to pick a fave they all shine for one reason or another. But since you ask. Zodiac: that outro swings so sick ! Boris of course, great opener it really sets a tone for the album . . . drags you in. Cow: perfect closer, the combo of the cymbals, treated vocals, an' that riff when they kick into it . . . thats just soaked and then lose it all to the classic Crover outro . . . and If I Had An Exorcism: that outro, the ocillation, those gross muffled vocals. This album is a great example of the sway & swing Melvins wield. Obvious with all those pulled and bent cords and notes, the droning feedback & Buzz's slurred vocals (damn I miss that . . . he should bring that back some). But its not just those obvious elements . . . its just Melvins. I've always thought they swing and groove (not like fuckin' jam bands, like voodoo). Kinda like when I see 'em live. Everyone drinks beer, bangs their heads & smashes into each other?? I've always leaned more towards droppin a tab & some skeletal relaxants, closing my eyes & dancin like a molassas snake. I think alota people miss out on that swing an' just latch on to all the crushing volume , distortion and whatnot.

Sarcasm intended I assume? Yeah, I wasn't being completely literal, trying to cop on Kev, or in anyway refereing to the community here. But it's kinda like the shirt: "Why'd the metal head cross the road?" I've encountered alota people at shows that should just go see Slipknot or somethin'. I mean the windy parts of PORTE don't really scream SLAM!!! or CROWD SURF!!! To me thats the whole beauty. They are as heavy and brutal as shit but thats just the frame, the guts and gears offer so much more. I think alota people just latch onto or fathom the obvious but there ain't nothin' obvious bout the Melivns . . . but thats a whole other post, so I'll zip it.

. . . and If I Had An Exorcism: that outro, the ocillation, those gross muffled vocals.

I LOVE what Dale mumbles at the beginning of the song? Or is it Buzz? Live it varies.

i agree with all of you, all the songs rock on the album.  when i first heard the album my favs were anaconda and if i had an exorcism.  i was once in a band where we covered if i had an exorcism.  fun song to play.

Yeah, Bullhead IS my favourite album of all time.. by any band.

I'd say Boris and Anaconda are the best songs. They're both powerful and sludgy. They always get me in a good mood.

It's so hard to pick just one.....I think I'll pick Zodiac. That's the song I liked most when I first listened. The change of pace is great and I really like the lyrics at the end.

i think the album version of boris is spectacular.  it's so sinful and heavy.  the best part for me is the end where there's no drums (that's guitar playing at the end, right?)  buzz sings the end lyrics so well and acts them out so great.  i don't know what the fuck he's talking about, but i sure do love whatever it is.

the first songs of lysol are insane.  i remember the first time i heard it, it was a rainy, cloudy day and i was playing video games.  it was the soundtrack for what environment i was in.  it got me kinda depressed, actually.  very spacey.  still good though.  anyway, getting off topic again, does anyone know why lysol is a one track album, or have a good guess why it is?  it's not like fantomas' delirium cordia where you can obviously tell it should be one track, i think in the melvins' case they should have named the full track one name, it's just kinda weird to me.  i guess with me, albums like that, i like to switch around songs.
yeah, i know norecess' question was for grungehead, just wanted to give ya my input.

I think the one track thing is just standard Melvins trickery. A crafty way to make people who would just skip to sit through a long slow build up. Kinda like the COD stuff live . . . I've seen alota people leave shows cause they weren't rockin out.

A couple of weeks ago I made a thread on which album should I get and I picked Bullhead out of a random drawing because of all the reccomendations I got. So anyway although I dont really remember the album that well I do remember enjoying it and being in the mood for it. Boris is slow 8 minute song that feels like 3 minutes. Although I really dont recall the lyrics it was satisfying. Well the reason I havent listened to it in the past 2 days is because it came on the same day my Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous album came so I been listening to that alot. the weirdest thing about The Melvins to me is that I actually enjoy this, I was never into slowish metal or jazz. I mean my favorite metal album is Rust in Peace by Megadeth. So I can say the melvins opened a whole new world open to me (not really) but hey I am a new fan!

Rust In Peace is Megadeth's best album.  Mustaine will never be able to top Holy Wars and Hangar 18. As for Bullhead, good choice although I recommended Stoner Witch since it was somewhat similar to Houdini. But I am confident that you will enjoy the more adventurous releases by the Melvins since you are liking Bullhead. Get Gluey Porch Treatments and then Ozma.

this is absolutely my favorite Melvins album and their best IMO. Boris is a masterpiece of balls out slowness and heaviness that no one pulls off like Melvins.

Its a great album, no denying that. But couldn't it use a remix?

It doesn't sound a bit flat to any of you all?
I think it's probably the most essential album they made.  Well maybe I think that because I like it so much still! Man, that flatness is also strength. Climb into the mind of a lunatic serialkiller like Zodiac. ( I forgot to get my pills. I like to go downtown...)
It could use a re-relase!
How could ANYBODY critisize Bullhead anyway...

Post by: Kallgeese on April 23, 2012, 01:48:20 PM
i think this has come up before and i think we all decided that it is studio manipulation, though it seems unlikely.  it also sounds too real and harmonic to be an electronic thing, considering the date and budget.  it is just another mystery of crover's legendary drumming.  just like the drumbeat to boris (in relation to the guitar).  when you really listen to , you just think, what the fuck is going on here!?  it is so hard to make sense of.

Just an idea: Is there any chance the weird cymbal noises could be bowed cymbals?

I love this record, it is one their best. I have heard many people complain about the sound quality which is puzzling to me. I feel the production fits the songs perfectly, and any re-recording with "superior sonic engineering" would only take away from the masterpiece that is Bullhead. I have never heard a CD or mp3 version so maybe that's the issue, but my vinyl sounds great. I really feel like this was the album where they found their sound. Don't get me wrong, I love Gluey and Ozma, but this one just feels more like an album to me, where the others feel more like awesome collections of Melvins songs. ....and ending a record with a drum solo? Not a bad idea when you have Dale Crover as your drummer!  I love love LOVE this album.

I think part of the complaint of sounding flat is because they recorded on an 8-track whereas previous to that they recorded on 16-tracks, which is probably why the sound isn't as massive as Gluey was. Still, it doesn't sound bad or anything, just quiet. That's probably also because it was mastered quieter on cd or something.

Post by: Dan_Halen on June 22, 2012, 06:08:41 PM
AKA It was mastered before they turned everything to 11 and compressed the shit out of it to put it on a CD.
I think Bullhead is better sonically than Ozma or Gluey as far as the quality of the recordings.
Melvins were made to be listened to on vinyl IMO

The record sounds better than disc, but any record will sound better than the standard CD version because of sound constraints...Bullhead and Ozma are my favorite albums by them...love Zodiac and the killer drums on its shoved.

This might be the best Melvins review I've ever seen. This kid's enthusiasm and honesty are infectious. He couldn't fake it if he tried. The tics, the speech impediment, the burping...I love it. It's so....genuine. I nearly pissed myself when he started talking about Dale's drumming around the 4:00 mark, mostly because he's dead on. I hope Buzz and Dale see this because this kid is a fan.

I put Bullhead in the car on the way to work last week. It's a 15/20 min drive, so not enough for the album but pretty much enough for two spins of Boris.  8)

One of the finest examples of drumming on that song as far as I'm concerned. The whole band just owns it.

The skull/skull teeth on the Eggnog disc/center of vinyl is from a Halloween decoration.  We had a similar one growing up. The black part was a felt like material.

The production on Bullhead can be annoying at times, but it works well with some of the songs. As far as songwriting goes, this isn't my favorite Melvins release but definitely the most consistent. Every single song kicks ass.

I remember reading in an interview from 1991 that most songs that are on Ozma and Gluey were created around 1985-86 (recorded later of course) and he didnt write new stuff until Bullhead recording came in 1991. He say in that interview that he was tired of playing these old songs so he wanted do to something totally different with Bullhead, an album with each song different than the other, like a bowl of fruits (:o ) .  The only old song on Bullhead is Your Blessened (already played live circa 1989)
