Title: Pick the best Melvins release of the last ten years
Post by: joelk on November 14, 2015, 01:18:53 PM
This thread has a selfish motivation--and maybe even a controversial one. I'll fall on an unpopular position here and assert I've not been truly thrilled about a Melvins release since Nude with Boots--the reason here being that Suicide in Progress was a total rock music revelation to me when I first heard it, and I sincerely hope that song will make it back into the setlists some day soon. Now, I also have to admit to having not heard Freak Puke, Tres Cabrones, Everyone Likes Sausages, or the Bulls and the Bees ep. I mean, I know I've heard tracks, and have probably enjoyed them--but I guess nothing moved me directly into digging through those releases with serious attention. Last Melvins record I bought on release day? Bride Screamed Murder, an album I don't really care about at all. I had a similar experience with Hold it In. I really wanted to like it, but so much of it struck me as "meh" at best. I could offer all of the usual disclaimers about "meh" Melvins being better than most other bands, and the meh albums not being bad by any stretch, etc. etc. etc. but fuck that. I LOVE certain Melvins material. Like adore it more than most music love it. So, I feel like giving mediocre a pass is sort of beside the point. With that said, I always thought the records themselves (with a few exceptions of course: Lysol, Stoner Witch, Bullhead, The Maggot, Egg Nog) were sort of hit and miss with me anyways--and my most direct love for the band comes from watching them play the material live. So, I might perhaps just be the wrong audience--I dunno. With that in mind, I'd like to hear which of the albums you folks would select as the "best" of the last ten years so that I can either revisit or listen for the first time with fresh ears.

Have at it.

Well said.
After thumbing through MELVINS last 10 years...The track Hospital Up on from BSM got me going.

I think that one might get my vote for favorite album of this last ten years' worth of stuff.

Sorry, my bad. I remembered (A)SA was 2004, instead of 2006.
Of course (A)SA is top (B&B second place).

Naturally.

My last ten or so years are a bit fucked up because of my kids. The timeline is off with everything. If I don't check or think properly, I get my months and years mixed up. If someone would've asked me when BSM was released, I would've estimated 2008. It's not really helping my mind when they keep releasing stuff all the time.  (I actually thought B&B was a lot older too...)

I understand. I've just always been good at remembering this stuff. Part of my creepiness, I guess.  :D

Yeah, even with hundreds of other bands and thousands of records, I held the strings easily - until the kids took away all my free time and gave me severe sleep deprivation instead. Some years are so hazy it feels like I've been drunk most of the year

All Melvins releases take time to grow on you.  Even Melvins albums I loved on the first listen I ended up loving even more on the 10th listen.

ASA, Nude With Boots, The Bulls and the Bees, and Hold It In are all excellent albums that can easily stand with the greatest in The Melvins discography.  So much talent and creativity.  I never get bored with these albums and always enjoy putting them on.

The Bride Screamed Murder, Freak Puke, Everybody Loves Sausages, and Tres Cabrones are all very good albums that have at least a few tracks that can stand with their best material.  Maybe the problem for me is consistency.  It's good stuff but doesn't hold my attention for the full 40min the way their other albums do.

Sugar Daddy Live is a puzzling live release that came out just as youtube became a household name and it leaves off 5 tracks from their original setlist.

Chicken Switch was an interesting idea that ultimately wasn't very good.  It felt like the artists were trying too hard to out weird The Melvins instead of making the track interesting or good.  There is no reason to listen to a track like "AHHH..." instead of the Lysol album.  Pitchfork thinks it's their best album of the past decade!

For me i'd rank them like this...

Top Tier: Everybody Loves Sausages, Tres Cabrones, Senile Animal, Bulls & The Bees

Middle Tier: Nude With Boots, Hold It In, Freak Puke, Beer Hippy

Bottom Tier: Sugar Daddy Live, Bride Screamed Murder, Chicken Switch, Sieg Howdy!

Everything still hits me in the right spot.  I was a tad leery on Bride at first but I think I was just in a bad mood or hungry or something.

I was disappointed in BSM when it came out. (A)SA and Nude With Boots kicked so much ass. I just figured they were back to putting out an expiramental album every third release (Prick, Honky, Electroretard, POTRE). They're entitled to do that, the way they release so much. If it were Tool,  :x
I got reacquainted with BSM a few years later and loved it.

I think I posted somewhere else that Waterglass really threw me for a loop at first but after seeing it live a bunch of times it's actually one of my favorite songs.

Chicken Switch.

Everything else is just too mainstream.

regarding the original post, I like suicide in progress a lot, but I think dog island was the most mind blowing one off that album.

vast filthy prison is like kinda sacred to me or something it's beautiful.

but as for albums, bride screamed murder and stag are currently tied for greatest melvins work to date. inhumanity and death is boring but the rest is awesome!

freak puke is up there too.

chicken switch isn't my thing, or thang....

I'm still warming up to everybody loves sausages.

hold it I'm some days seems really cool and other days seems really bland...

I honestly think captain comedown might be my least favorite song they've ever done that I've heard. it's just dull to me. it seems like they recycled a few riffs and tweaked them or something like it just seems like a quick filler song or something and doesn't do anything for me

Pitchfork confirmed.

That said, how did their two best albums not named Bullhead happen in the 2010s and why did they both come out in 2013?

Haha did PF actually rate that album? Wouldnt surprise me if it was rated higher than their "regular" releases.

On a serious note I'd actually say Hold It In or ASA. This Machine Kills Artists is one of my favourites but technically it's not a Melvin's album....Tres Cabrones too if it were an EP (the joke songs don't do much for me)

Of the last ten years (A) Senile Animal, Nude With Boots and The Bulls & The Bees EP are what I rate really highly. B&B is pushing HAT for the best thing they've ever done in my opinion I still listen to it all the time.

But I think the four most recent studio albums The Bride Screamed Murder, Freak Puke, Tres Cabrones and Hold It In are all pretty average. I really liked that Melvins 1983 EP but the rest of what made it onto Tres Cabrones was disappointing.

What I really appreciate with the Melvins though is they just keep churning the albums out even if the quality isn't there so you don't really lose interest because the next one round the corner might be really good. Some bands that go 4-5 years between albums if they put out a crap album you can be waiting 10 years for the next decent one, assuming it even is and that for me hurts my interest in the band.

I would really like an ethereal gothic type sounding Melvins album like the B&B EP was.

They've put out some good shit over the past decade but I think if I had to choose it would either be A Senile Animal, Tres Cabrones, or The Bulls and the Bees. Those feel like the most solid.
