You don't have much luck with Detroit shows, you should probably just come to Grand Rapids  :)

two things... no, three things.

first thing:  GR is farther and a shittier drive.

second thing:  GR is a Thursday.

third thing:  GR shows are full of the hipsterest hipsters that ever hipstered.   there is something about the safety of the environment that I do not like.   give me a good old fashioned over crowded intimidating Detroit show any time.    dude... I was weaned on that shit.     going to Blondies on  8 mile at the ripe old age of 17..  I don't feel at home unless I'm surrounded by scary people and terrified to get from the car to the door.

It's an almost two hour drive (depending on traffic) to Detroit from where I am versus the 45 minute drive it takes me to get to Grand Rapids. I don't really even pay attention to the crowds when I go to shows so I can't really comment on that. I just want to see the Melvins without some dirty butt stinking up my personal space and then leave.

I don't even have to say I'll be in Detroit.   because y'all know I'll be in Detroit.

for those of you considering coming to Motown for a visit.   firstly, please do.    I'll be cordial as a motherfucker.    secondly, please be aware that El Club is about smack dab in the middle of nowhere shitsville neighborhoody Detroit.   it's not within walking distance of any hotel or other drinking establishment that you might want to visit.  it's also not within walking distance of "downtown".   so be prepared to taxi and/or uber to a hotel and/or dinner and/or other bars.     Mexican Town isn't terrible.  but go ahead and Google Earth that shit.   4114 Vernor Highway Detroit.    just so you know what to expect.      now that you know allow me to once again compliment El Club's interior, El Club's sound.  El Club's pizza.  El Club's outdoor patio area with full bar that will be outstanding on an August evening. and El Club's general pleasantness when it isn't so overcrowded you have some dude's stinky sweaty hair about 1.5" off your face.

Can't recall from whose mouth they came but I remember similar "heads ups" 'bout Smalls' Hamtramck neighbourhood's sketchiness ... granted I was only there numerous brief periods for shows; but yeah, never seemed all that sketchy ... the ice cream parlour just up the street was positively quaint and welcoming in a just outta the inner city kinda way, and the scoops were damn good! And that pad whose backyard boardered Smalls parking lot? They had some adorably cute and friendly rottweilers and pits.

Hoping to see you at the El Club Glen

Smalls

that's in a prevalently Iraqi neighborhood.     I've never had a problem there ever but once again its  more than a walk to downtown.

about the only truly "downtown" club is St. Andrews/The Shelter.     everything else is down the road in the cheaper rent districts.

That "Party Store" was tits! I saw Eminem in there one night; at first I thought it might be Kid Rock but the hair was too blonde and too short. I remember drinking at a bar near by too? Didn't seem Iraqi ... more Polish/Eastern Euro? Smalls' is cool, unassuming, and down to earth and Sgt. Peps at Majestic did some good 'za for some post show bites ... but I still dig St. Andy's the best.

PINKUS AND STEVEN on NIGHT GOAT
Personally i hope not! Night Goat is one Melvins song that has been played live far too much. The same goes for The Bit, Boris and more lately It's Shoved. It doesn't seem to matter how much new material they have, Night Goat and The Bit always appear on the setlist tour after tour!

I suspected someone would pipe up with that reply. I never said i hated it, it's a great song unfortunately quite simply played too often by the band. I have no problem with bands performing older songs and even playing them continually gig after gig for years if they only have 3 albums to their name or something. The problem for me with Melvins is they are a band with a gazillion releases. They could play any number of surprising tracks and shake things up for both themselves and the fans but they rarely do. I imagine Buzz chatting to Dale prior to another tour and planning the set and saying "right, okay, older songs.... hmm we'll put Night Goat in there!". Has he forgotten they wrote OTHER great songs in the 90's?

I'd make the argument that it's the closest the band had to a hit (the same could be said for Hooch, Revolve, The Bit, Honey Bucket, etc...) but they're not exactly a hit band. But on the flipside they're not Primus or Ween and have 60+ songs memorized either. The band pumping out albums year after year does do no favors for a good amount of songs so I agree a lot of killer tunes get left on the wayside.

As far as Night Goat I'm sure they know the fans love that tune to bits, diehard or casual.

I've seen MELVINS probably 20 + times now.  I've heard Night Goat about 5.

plus.. it's like Slayer not playing "Reign In Blood" or Cannibal Corpse not playing "Hammer Smashed Face" or Napalm Death not playing "You Suffer But Why?"

without it something is missing.

It’s a valid point is it not?  How can you complain about something you’ve never experienced?  In the at least 15-20 times I’ve seen Night Goat played live I never once thought to myself, “Oh man, not that one again”.  Also, to be fair, before the recent video with Kevin I don’t think it was in any set I’ve seen since 2015.  I was actually starting to miss it....

Oh and Glen, it’s Raining Blood 😉

So for arguments sake, lets say you watch a movie. Can you not mention anything about it - what you liked, what you disliked because you weren't there to experience it? That you are not allowed to have ANY kind of dialogue about it because you weren't present?

Anyone remember the 2nd night of the Residency shows in Brixton when the gigantic black security dudes started swarming the crowd like sharks and flying in and beating the daylights out of all the honkies?
If I remember rightly it all started due to some poor skinny 5 foot honky who was about 16yrs old getting hoisted (against his will) up for a little minor crowd surf.....he was the first to get devoured by the sharks. From there it turned into a frenzy of violence and fish scales flying all over the place.

Gotta love Brixton.

Movies are created with the intention that the viewing audience was not there to see how the actual movie was made (to keep a level of illusion in place).

Watching a youtube video of a live performance is not the same as seeing a live performance.
By definition a pre-recorded video is not a live performance.  Even a live stream of a concert is not the same as a live performance.

You can comment all you like on a video you saw of a live performance, but it is not the same as being there.  It doesn't sound the same, it doesn't look the same, it doesn't smell the same and it certainly doesn't feel the same.

Why bother watching a washed out knock off copy of an original, when you can see the real thing?  But then again I don't watch videos of performances very often for those exact reasons.

I name drop Paul anytime I get the chance. He was ALWAYS my favourite wrestler of all-time. Even when he was a goodie he was a baddie. Plus he piledrived Hogan after pretending to be all palsy with him.....AND.....he beat Hogan in the blue cage on Saturday Night's Main Event that time and then was robbed of the title cause he wasn't a big ol yellow haired goofy goodie.

When Orndorff was kicking ass in the 80s wrestling was cool....when his bicep deflated in the 90s wrestling was LAAAAAAME.....and when Orndorff retired it got even more LAAAAAAAAAAAME!!!!!

So next time anyone says how their favourite wrestler is someone other than Orndorff, The Hammer, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard or Rick Rude.....they need to punch themselves in the face and then give themselves a brain buster from the top rope!!!!!

Yes, kind of an apples to oranges comparison and you pretty much replied the same as I was going to.  I was also going to use another comparison for context.  I almost never watch movies.  Don’t know why, just don’t have the desire (and I’m not good at sitting still for long periods of time).  Yet I constantly find myself saying things like, “Oh great, another stupid (insert famous actor) movie” when in reality I’ve likely never seen one of their movies.  I try to remind myself I have no room to criticize that which I have no experience with.

But they do play Night Goat a whole fuck of a lot! I've seen Melvins somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 times and yeah, I've seen/heard/experienced a shit tonne of the Night Goat. Don't get me wrong I don't mind at all ... that being said if they don't whip it out I'm certainly not gonna cry. Even if it got back shelved for a few years I wouldn't need a tissue. But it's like their "Stairway" or maybe "Kashmir" of course it's gonna be ground into the turf a bit deeper than say Lizzy or something.

On a more general view ... I have found setlists of the last 5-10 years getting kinda static ... with a lot of certain classics becoming almost expected staples and even left turn deep cuts being pretty predictable and coming from a shallower reservoir of options.

I always thought Lizzy should've been Melvins "Smells Like Teen Spirit".....it's not my favourite song although I do love it.....but it's the type of song these Grunge goonz would jizz to and say how it sounds just like Soundgarden humped Pearl Jam and stuff.

But the Nightgoat complaining reminds me of all the Gatherers complaining about The Wait.

It's real shitty that Melvins are playing Toronto on 5/16, then coming down the QEW, crossing the Peace Bridge passing right through Buffalo on down the I-90 through Erie PA & on to Cleveland on the 18th. I seriously want to do the old "light up a steaming pile of dog-shit in a bag trick" on the front steps of The Mohawk, Tralf, 9th Ward, & Iron Works for not making the Melvins happen here in 2018. :merde: Motherfuckers need to step their game up. :disagree:
WNY promoters baffle me sometimes. You get the great surprises now and again like Shellac twice in two consecutive album tours, & Negative Approach 3X in 4 yrs,, but when a show like this is passed over, it's a total WTF. Unless the Melvins are saying no, we want a day off w/ border cross and all, but I doubt it.

Like I said earlier, it's a Friday in Cleveland, I'll take the 1/2 day off work and hit it. Grog Shop is great. Have seen Melvins there in '04, '10, & '12. Fuck You Toronto , I will not drive to your overpopulated city to see a show and deal with the border bullshit & congested traffic. I'll always rather drive that extra hour to Cleveland just to stay in the good ol' US of A and have a more stress-free drive.

I've talked to the staff there, some who are in local bands. They are definitely fans too, and have tried in the past, almost happened over Iron Works '16. Don't know details on why it hasn't happened yet. High On Fire, Mudhoney, Meat Puppets, & OFF! have played there. Melvins sure as fuck should.

For all of western/central NY, actually Rochester is due. They were in Buffalo last Aug '16 @ Iron Works along w/ Syracuse which got consecutive tours from '13 thru '17. Last Roch show was Melvins Lite summer '12, warmup show before that Canadian Lite run. I'd personally like to see Ithaca NY get a Melvins fix. The Haunt is the perfect size venue for Melvins. Saw Bob Mould & Pere Ubu there within the last 5 yrs, epic shows.

You sound about as miffed as I was when I found out Cradle of Filth are bypassing Adelaide on their Australian tour in May. The cunts play four shows straight in the eastern states then have a day off fly right over the top of Adelaide and the next night play their last show in Perth. Absolute fucking bullshit by the promoter.

I still haven't forgiven Metropolis Touring for skipping Adelaide on the Fantomas tour in 2005. The one and only chance I had to see Suspended Animation songs live.

To both you guys, i mentioned movies as an example not because it reinforces an argument against what you are saying but because it's a good example of how we experience something "second hand" and how that is not deemed inferior, or a second hand experience. You are both absolutely correct that a movie is not intended to be thought of outside of what you see on the screen. I think that much is a given.

Do i think a live show is the same as viewing a show on a computer? Again, obviously not. I never said it was. In fact i never even mentioned watching a show that way at all during this exchange. I merely said Night Goat was overplayed. I could have that same opinion even if i just saw a written setlist. It is an opinion sure, but does it devalue my opinion simply because i haven't seen or "experienced" it live? What if hypothetically you saw the band play a show live once whilst someone else saw every single performance of a tour via a video feed in a room next door to the venues? Who would have "experienced" it then? Who would have had the "real" experience. What is real?

So this is why i answered "yes and no" before, because it is the same but different. Not necessarily different as in worse but simply different. I know many will say that you can't compare one experience whatever it is, with another but i say you most definitely can. Too much emphasis is placed upon what people themselves like to the detriment of any other way of interacting with something. Perhaps there are people who prefer to see a streamed show than attend it. I wouldn't class myself quite in that way but i definitely don't see the distance between the two to be so far removed. Ha, even though it actually is rather ironically in other ways.

PINKUS AND STEVEN on NIGHT GOAT
Personally i hope not! Night Goat is one Melvins song that has been played live far too much. The same goes for The Bit, Boris and more lately It's Shoved.

I'm sorry but I can't let this one go, when was the last time they played Boris regularly? I'm pretty sure it was the residency shows in 2011 and 2013. Yeah, that's kind of a while now. They can bring that one back.

You're right, they haven't played that one quite so much. Or at least lately anyway. But it is one of those songs that has been performed many times over the last, let's say 10 years. To the point in which i would prefer them to leave it be for a while anyway.

I don't think it's been in the set during a regular tour since the 2007 big business tour.

Edit: but whatever, I'll take most any "old" tune over stuff like sesame Street meat and onions make the milk taste bad.

It's funny you say that because after posting that I immediately played both and thought "oh, these actually aren't bad at all".

I was on vacation last year and missed them but that looked like one of the better setlists they've done in a while.
