Walsby shared one of Toshis Instagram videos a while back said Sleep and Melvins involved. My guess is Sabbath covers with maybe Al from sleep singing?? That’s what it sounds like in the clip.

Now this is exciting!!! To me it doesn't sound like Al in that Instagram clip although i guess it could be. Love the HAZE art there and the "Melvins" font.

Thinking out loud, i wonder if this is going to be part of that mysterious "history of rock" album project that was mentioned or whether it's just a one off 10 inch. It does seem with Melvins that the songs they put out with HAZE always end up appearing on an album later on. Like the Tres Cabrones or Basses Loaded tracks were.

but then again.. the almighty dollar is highly motivational.    this will sell like wildfire.

Ian, I don't know about that business of it all coming out on an album or CD. Wasn't "Alleged" on AmRep and also a covers collaborative 10" ? Or a variety of "other" collaborative covers on AmRep only vinyl ("Victoria," "Breaking Glass," "In League With Satan," and the rest of the clown series b-sides)

I appreciate that there are these vinyl only releases and I guess eventually hearing crappy rips on youtube is better than never hearing them. But I'm not really getting my hopes up. I might try to get the vinyl to own since the art is awesome and there's no guarantee it'll ever come out any other way. I'll still probably have to wait until it's on youtube or wherever to hear the damn thing.

I know, i thought somewhat the same. Especially a song that has been covered by many acts.

Yes, you are right, not ALL the Amrep stuff appears on an Ipecac release but i think there's a good chance this will. Or some of it! Usually it is more the 7"'s that tend to be their own thing. The 10"'s the band have put out have usually been album material, released earlier as an 10" EP. However you are right that this doesn't necessarily mean anything in terms of future plans.

It's definitely not Matt. It doesn't immediately sound like Al either, but after hearing it a few times it does seem like it could be him. Imitating Ozzy. If this is indeed the Sleep guys, i wonder how Matt would fit into this. The guitar sounds like Buzz alone to me so im wondering if it isn't just Buzz, Dale and Al on bass.

Alright... Sounds like maybe a Sausages project that couldn't get finished until after the long awaited Sleep releases. Just my guess. Curious what the lineup is. I'm really hoping for the classic, epic Sabbath tracks. Two tracks over seven minutes, please!

It seems that 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and 'Black Sabbath' are the two songs that are featured. It is an odd one that it is a 10" considering it's only two songs. I guess this falls in line with what Buzz said recently about 7"'s being too expensive to have made. They just decided to make it a 10" instead.

As regards the line-up, it appears to be Buzz, Dale and Al by the looks of it.

I wonder why Buzz is doing this considering his burning hatred for Ozzy-era Sabbath

Knowing how he feels about them, I almost want to accost him at the next show to enthusiastically thank him for finally giving fitting tribute to the Melvins' obviously-biggest influence who they directly descended from, just to get a reaction

At this point, does this mean Al can be considered an official "Melvin"? A proper Melvins bassist? Or does a true member need to perform live with the band beyond merely recording their part?

I've always been really intrigued about that project ever since Steve mentioned it. He said Buzz asked Jeff MacDonald to be involved and i always thought it would just be that line-up. But now i do wonder if - like you say - it could be a number of guests all contributing on different types of songs. In this sense, i wonder whether it would just be a series of covers (like Everybody Loves Sausages) presented in chronological order or whether it would be new Melvins material done in the style of the various eras of rock.

That's straight-up bizarre; just a year or two ago I read an interview with him where he shit all over them, complained about being compared to them because he said he never thought they were actually very good/thought they were horribly overrated, and said their only decent album was Heaven & Hell. This is like the diametric opposite of the stuff he was saying there.

I would point out that this article seems that the site reached out to Buzz and seemed to ask "why is sabbath cool?" I don't think that Buzz wrote to them asking to do an article. His answers in this seem to mostly try to walk away from sabbath and talk about priest, cooper, and blue cheer.

I would guess the root of it is this: Buzz and co really like Sabbath. But, they feel it minimizes them when they are viewed as a band that is just trying to duplicate sabbath's sound, or is a band that is MOSTLY influenced by sabbath, as that seems to suggest they're not adding their own originality or cleverness into their own music, or are always in the shadow of another band. I think Buzz sees Sabbath as something like 1/20th of what the Melvins are, the rest being influence of other bands, other art, and the band's own spark. This is totally my guess, mind you.

I agree, Sabbath is the cornerstone of most heavy metal sound, over bands like deep purple...but only where Judas priest gets less love, Iron Maiden has more of a marketing niche for that matter than Priest.

Kids who didn't live the 80's wouldn't think to know the difference of whats what, they didn't see it evolve in real time.

Did they mention Pink floyd at all? I would credit them as being a major influence..but that goes without saying, a lot of bands owe a huge debt to Pink Floyd.

There was a lot of polished glam stuff that got in there and smeared a lot of the focus from some of the grittier more brutal stuff that evolved out of the crossover.

You can hear more Alice cooper influence in Halo of Flies, more stooges sound etc.

Melvins are a lot more cautious about disclosing their influences, but clearly Buzz loves the noise aspect of loud psych rock because it so easily challenged the later stuff in the punk and metal scene even by today's standards.

personally I'd love to hear the Melvins take on Sabbath tunes, anyone with a good pair of ears can appreciate Blues oriented stuff even in a heavy metal context.

Nothing wrong with Sabbath covers, I wouldn't Judge a band for biting sabbath, there's too many bands out there to name who are blatant about it, so what's one more band taking a shot at the sabbath can going to do at this point? I'm sure they'd sell more albums that way...it's a win.

What do you think if they had done Hendrix or blue cheer, kids wouldn't give as big a fuck...who are those guys? right?

Hell most people are deaf and can't tell the difference between anything.

back in highschool, I played melvins for a guy who thought Buzzes vocals sounded like metallica, I laughed...

Maybe...mayyybe...but Only because the guy doesn't know who Corrosion of Conformity is whatsoever, and I'd rate them as a bigger influence on Melvins than Metallica.

I'd say Buzz tends to sound more like Tom From slayer when he's really belting it out.

One thing I will mention is that Buzz IMO is one of the greatest all time vocalists of Heavy metal, hands down...he's maybe a Bulldozer on guitar (which is actually a good thing in this case IMO) he's got some serious bellows on him that is a challenging match, lyrically I find them untouchable, that's their secret formula that encodes a lot of direct meaning and really opens the whole thing up into it's own private little world.

Lol... This acquaintance I've mentioned here before who is really weird about what he chooses to listen to, and hates the Melvins because "all of their decades' worth of songs sound identical" (which, as I've pointed out elsewhere, is an absurd criticism from somebody whose all-time favorite band is Bad Religion) was really impressed when I played "Hooch" and "Honey Bucket" in my car while giving him a ride... but only because he was completely convinced they were Metallica. Once I pointed out who it actually was, suddenly the songs weren't actually all that good or whatever, y'know...

I could picture them putting out a great "Fairies Wear Boots"

also, though I'd take 'good' Sabbath over practically any other metal band any day of the week, I would argue that purely on a good vs. bad albums ratio, Deep Purple beats the hell out of Tony's Boys. I would love a Deep Purple cover one of these days - especially if it's a track from the underrated Rod Evans era.

I love Sabbath to bits but I have a hard time disagreeing with this. Purple in their prime is as essential as Sabbath. Hell I'd easily take Now What!? over 13 or Perpindicular over most of the Tony Martin output.

Yeah, back when I was first getting into the band I heard that, It sounds like it's from a rehearsal that got recorded.

It was on a tape I made a million years ago for my drummer, trying to get him into the Melvins...he really loved one or two tracks at least, Like ever since my accident, the part where Buzz goes

YEAAAUUUHHH!!! with crazy drums and guitar solo at the end, The fast version just cracked him up because it's basically insane.

Was hoping Into the Void was one of the tracks because this shit here fuckin kills. It’s in regular rotation for me. How they slow it down and the groove...something about it. The only other Sabbath cover that comes close is the EP THOU put out. All Sabbath covers. It’s some of the heaviest shit I’ve ever heard. If y’all haven’t heard it check it out.

Sabbath are both overrated and underrated IMO. I think the best album is the first one where they have no idea what they're doing and its just weird & dark extremely heavy white man blues. Even the proggy 10 minute guitar solo is kind of good!

Paranoid is pretty much untouchable. There's limits to the musicianship, I guess, but the songs and the sound and the sequencing are perfect.

That said, I don't need covers of those songs so anything Sabbath the Melvins choose to do is great by me. I sort of half expect a weird interpretation like Buick McKane or that one split single they only half learned (was it the Velvet Underground, or KISS).

But I also think with Al it's likely to be heavy and dark which is a great thing.

I'm sure Buzz likes Black Sabbath more than he wants to admit.
They've already done Black Sabbath covers and not for the dollah.
For all his talk of the Stones, Beatles and the importance of the classics there's no way he doesn't respect the founding fathers of heavy metal.
He just doesn't want to show it much.
They just don't worship them like, say, Sleep do.
He just has to say his contrarian thing every time, come on it's Buzz.
Of course has to mention they were more into Black Flag than Black Sabbath so people don't go thinking they were ripping off Black Sabbath when they built their sound, because that's not what happened, they grew from another scene. He doesn't want anyone building obvious false connections.
Regarding Ozzy he just obviously thinks his life decisions weren't that wise, but that's personal.
That's all there is to it.

Of course has to mention they were more into Black Flag than Black Sabbath so people don't go thinking they were ripping off Black Sabbath when they built their sound

Based on their early stuff, I don't see how one could see more Sabbath than BF in their sound.

I picked up a few years ago, a newly released double LP of a 60's band called "Iron Maiden" (NO CONNECTION TO THE 80's IRON MAIDEN)

They were from the same time and place Just never put out a full release and had all these Acetates that never got played, the band basically didn't make it out of the 60's and went through many lineup and name changes in the mid 60's.

So Honestly? Where did sabbath get some of their influence? IMO check into the Original Iron Maiden band and you'll see where they got some ideas for songs like NIB for example and drew more from Occult subject matter.

also, my friend played me the Melvins Cover of Sabbath Bloody sabbath, it took me a minute to figure it out. The whole thing had more of a St. Vitus vibe or sleep or something.

I listened to it for the first time last night. I have no idea what happened. kindle must've glitched out. first 2 times I could barely hear the vocals, bass or drums. sounded like some weird noise rock. I thought wow, this is brave. then on the 3rd listen it played for real with all the proper levels and I was a little disappointed. not great. not bad. kinda bland. I think it'll grow on me.

It's been interesting purveying the polarizing opinions of listeners on Instagram and the video itself. With anything like this it also makes for good reading seeing where each person comes from on something like this. People who are either more fans of Melvins or fans of Sleep and judging accordingly.

To be fair with the Crystal Fairy stuff they probably put more effort into that given the commercial potential of the project.

From a musician's/ songwriter's POV, I see it more as a thing where you shift instrumentation around to fit the personnel. Buzz plays low end riffs when he sings these days. His voice has gotten deeper with age, as happens with all vocalists. He plays deep riffs when he sings, but playing with a female vocalist, he started to shift things around to fit her voice better . That created a better flow from song to song throughout the entire album. Add in the fact that there was a keyboard on a lot of those songs and that pushed things around even further. If you strip out Teri from that album it sounds more like Ozma than anything they've done in a decade.

Man, these guys could have retired a looonnng time ago, like before the end of the 90's ok?

Here's an idea: How about YOU take some of your hard earned dollars into the studio and put out your own Sabbath covers and see if Your recordings can hold any water.

Straight up man, if you don't like it, keep it to yourself.

 on a *FAN* forum!

people seem to forget they are fans, not critics. Case in point, we're lucky to still have a band like this, it's incredible...absolutely.

Who said the drums sound like cardboard on this recording..Meezer? Dammit  what in the hell are you listening to it through, are you kidding? It's heavy and punishing, listen to that snare!

As far as a band making it on their own terms, this is a true victory lap for them to put this out...Something is better than nothing, It's good for them to cash in a little and kick back a bit after the trials and experiences they've been through over the years.

Personally I'd have given up playing music by now if I kept hearing people talking shit about it. That's me and I'm Just a total baby then.

Couple other sabbath covers by other bands, you know what? Both these bands still sound like themselves covering sabbath. Melvins sound like themselves, that's one important thing to note about this particular cover...it's got over 91,000 Views already, so that's a really amazing thing considering there's a marginal hardcore fan base for the band that's probably under 20,000 people. They are bringing their music into a broader market with a different grain of perspective, people might overlook the band until they hear something by them that is familiar, then they might stop and take a second look at something else the band has put out that they would otherwise dismiss.

I don't think anyone here sees themselves as a critic. We are all fans that discuss what we like and what we don't. I know a place such as this will attract a range of different people. Some will be long time hardcore Melvins devotees, some will be casual fans, some may be disenchanted former enthusiasts, some may have only just discovered the band. All these different types of people are music fans and all have a voice. This place should be for all to voice what they think whether it is overwhelmingly positive or generally more critical.

As i see it, you are a very fervent supporter of all things Melvins and that's perfectly fine. Im not expecting or asking you to be otherwise but you can't demand that everyone else follows suit. You can't dictate that this place should be where everyone is 100% positive about EVERYTHING Melvins 100% of the time. That's just not real. I agree wholeheartedly with Stonergrunge, we should ALL be able to talk here about what our ideas and opinions are. There's room for all that. For all perspectives along the spectrum. It's not a sterile, boring, nodding in agreement environment and thank-god it's not.

Ian, have you ever been to a melvins concert?
I would imagine you know i haven't.

If im reading your train of thought there correctly, i see what you are saying, but i don't think live comes into it when we are talking about RECORDED work. As Buzz himself says those are two different things. If someone was to say they didn't like a certain song that isn't a reflection on the band themselves or them as a live act, merely that song in itself.

For example - as comical as this sounds lets run with it - let's say there was a band that always put on really great, fun shows but their albums were pretty bad or lackluster. Would that mean their recorded work gets a free pass purely on their ability to put on a fun show? Or what about the opposite - is a band that made fantastic albums a bad band if their live performances are drab or unrepresentative?

But back to Melvins, if seeing a band live is the only barometer of their greatness or otherwise, what about the members here who have indeed seen Melvins live countless times (probably more than yourself!) yet they still deem certain parts of their discography as poor or even terrible? Do their opinions still count for nothing?

I'll never understand the outraged reactions to any negative comment on the band's output.

That's like me sitting here and getting flustered about somebody liking this song that I happen to dislike.

I've been listening to the Melvins for decades, been on this forum for a number of years and lurked here for many years before that.
I have totaled maybe 5 posts critiquing the Melvins, all of them in my opinion pushing a point of discussion forward despite my dislikes or turn-offs.

No, I don't want them to return to the early 90s when things were better. They weren't.
No, I don't want them to be HEAVIER and turn up the amps and go back to the Les Paul and play slower. The heaviness of this band has nothing to do with distortion or loudness.

Every single time I say anything that doesn't equate to me loving whatever the band is doing, some grumpy dude jumps up with the "APPRECIATE IT OR GET OUT" mindset. That is absolute bullshit to me and decidedly un-Melvins in ethos as well.

As people have pointed out, this is a discussion forum. So as long as I'm interested, I will keep discussing and that also includes things that aren't so great.

Ok how about you reign in the youtube comment section energy and let us have a discussion.

I'm aware that you don't track my posts, but we have discussed gripes with their current sound on here a whole lot and didn't think I need to roll out the whole thing again to get my point across. I played this song on my sound system like I do every time, the fact that you worked yourself up into some kind of "you kids and your phones" tangent is hilarious. Especially considering that most of us first listened to this on Youtube. I'm sure it all sounds extra crisp when played through your superior hi-fi.

The drums on this Sabbath record sound bland and tinny to me. It might be the kit, it might be the engineering, it might be the mix. I'm not about to A/B it for you with a record that I like, because we are arguing over arbitrary factors - all I said, and am still saying, is that I am tired of this tone. I don't care if this was recorded somewhere other than Sound Of Sirens, I just think that the sound, mix and sometimes studio performance has been quite uninspired lately. Cisneros' vocals on this have been discussed previously, I agree in that he is not at all helping the already pretty tired delivery of this song. I love that the Melvins do what they want, that's what makes them THEM, but if what they want right now is dad rock, then I guess that aspect is not for me.

Does this mean I think that the Melvins don't kick ass? No.
Does this mean I don't respect the fact that they're one of the most phenomenal bands of this (and the last) century? Fuck no.
Does the fact that they're phenomenal and have been around for a long time mean that I'll nod and agree with everything that comes out? Even if I don't like it? Ask yourself.

What *do* you want from this band? what will satisfy you and make you happy then? sincerely!

I don't "want" anything. They're my favourite band, always have been. They don't owe me things. It's art, and it's theirs to make.
Also, keep in mind that I'm not saying anything on here to convince the band to change their ways. All I'm doing (and I can't believe I'm still breaking this part down) is COMMENTING ON THE SONG IN THE DAMN THREAD THAT WAS STARTED FOR DISCUSSION ABOUT THE SONG.

I happen to not like it. I happen to be over their style of production and feel like they're plateauing. I'm good on Sabbath and especially Stones covers. My week has been great, I just have an opinion and was apparently mistaken that this is the place to express it.

PS: How is not liking something being grouchy? Doesn't Buzz himself shit on pretty much everything? And you love him for it?

This is gold.

Actually a friend played this tune through his Iphone for me, It took me awhile to guess who actually.

I played it a second time on my Monitor and PA system, My Superior Hi-fi is broken to be honest.

Here's a thought.

Put on a display at an art gallery.. lets say it's your rendering of a famous painting by a classic artist in particular because you're already a well known artist inside of a community...

It's an opening night and here you are. a minute goes by, someone walks up to one of your paintings and starts critiquing your work all of a sudden other people chime in and start pointing out what they feel is wrong with your work and then Just walk away. It's like, What are you doing HERE in the first place looking at my painting if you don't like it?  :?

Within reason, what gives you the right to Judge what someone else is doing for a living?

What would you have them do if it was up to you?

Oh, yeah no more Sabbath covers...ok you can live with that? But what more can they do for you?  what DO you want then, you still haven't expressed what they should be doing in your opinion. You have NO idea what's coming down the line in the future based on this one cover song do you?

An art gallery is something very different from a discussion forum, D. I really hope that is understood otherwise we won't reach any kind of anything here.

Your example equates more to going to a Melvins show and heckling them from the pit screaming about how lame that Sabbath cover was.

Oh, yeah no more Sabbath covers...ok you can live with that? But what more can they do for you?  what DO you want then, you still haven't expressed what they should be doing in your opinion. You have NO idea what's coming down the line in the future based on this one cover song do you?

Jeez man, you asked the question on the Sabbath covers and I said I'm good on it. I'm also good on a rumored Stones cover EP. It's just my damn opinion, how has this got you so tight? There is nothing to be expected or wanted from a band, I only commented on one song. You asked about them not doing covers at all and I (half-jokingly) said I could live without it.

Oh exactly i agree. Honestly i really do, it IS special. As i mentioned a couple of days ago, it is special to get new releases too even when i don't much like some of them. But don't forget lots of bands go through all sorts of things. Not all of those bands are great bands or put out awesome records. Graft and passion is one thing and to be commended of course but it's all about the outcome. That is all that matters in any artistic field. Not what goes into it but what comes out the other side. That is what it stands or falls by and nothing else. On it's own merits.

You asked about them not doing covers at all and I (half-jokingly) said I could live without it.

now I'M the one criticizing YOU...Well maybe you can tell me something then, how does it feel?

That being said, ok... I talk a lot of negative shit on this forum in general. I admit.

It's tough to try and make a living on your own using your creativity, so I duno maybe negative shit does inspire in some ways to use that and keep going.

I really can't say, It's probably best to ignore it or pretty soon you'd be through with life already in your head.

I can understand not wanting to hurt someone's feelings, but does that over-ride someone's actual opinion? There's a difference between 'your dirty music sucks, and so does your mom', and I liked the band during these years, but not these, and this sounds bad to me, because of x and y and z.
Doesn't it seem strange to only want to hear mindless compliments about a band, disregarding the actual content or subject matter?

I'm pretty inspired to hear this track and the artwork is Killer...It's one of the coolest Haze Lino cuts I've seen, It's really a special thing, Sabbath is one of those sacred magical things for me personally.

Sabbath bloody sabbath is one of those Albums that has been there for me in life at some rough points, possibly the greatest sabbath album IMO.

There's been a few nights I've gone for walks with this Album playing. It's a total game changer of a record.

Why they chose to do this now after all the other bands did it a lot earlier in their career points has me wondering, considering when they themselves, were into this music at a time when it had really gone out in the 90's.

Does this song have some special place in the bands hearts and minds? or was it Just a choice everyone could agree on?

Anyway, go ahead and dislike it, no big deal then.

What's the song about?

It's about deep stuff Buttholeman...you wouldn't understand.  :P

So Can we all skip ahead and start calling them sellouts yet?  [-X

I know we already technically know what it is, but I'd love it if they'd follow up "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" with a curveball track most people wouldn't care about (even moreso than "Fluff", at least that's Ozzy-era), like "Headless Cross", "Trashed", or "No Stranger to Love"

Missed out. First tried the blood red one, that was sold out, then had the pink one in my cart, but while on PayPal it said that one was also sold out. I'm not a fan of the Love and Death soundtrack, the book and the bluray are interesting but I don't want to pay that amount of money for just those items and the artwork. I'll buy the cd's next time something comes up to save shipping costs, I'm sure there are plenty of those.

I usually don't line up for limited Melvins records, there's simply too much to keep up with. But a Melvins/Sleep  Sabbath-cover collab? Too good to pass on. I love Sleep as much as Melvins, so that definitely played a role.

That's the one song post-first-four that people always give a free pass to (or just forget isn't on Master of Reality or something). If they're feeling generous they'll also give one to "Symptom of the Universe" (while specifying that the second half of the song is, like, gay as fuck doood)

Two of the dudes I'm talking about were Dream Theater fanboys who couldn't leave the house without wearing some piece of merch from them which says a lot, and I don't even dislike Dream Theater. When one of them also feels like hijacking a music class briefly covering Nirvana/Seattle's cultural impact for a thirty-minute soliloquy about how Kurt Cobain ruined all music forever because he "single-handedly killed the virtuoso by making it so you could become successful and validated as a rock musician even if you had no idea how to play guitar" then they also start to go on my shitlist though.

Prog-nerds are just a trip in general. One of the people I'm referring to would basically fly into a rage and kick off a dozens-of-pages internet flamewar anytime he saw Pink Floyd being referred to as progressive rock, and would go into this whole thing comparing individual bits and pieces of their songs to individual bits and pieces of Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson songs to show the difference between them and 'real' progressive rock and would get really, really worked up about it and how angry it made him that that mainstream bullshit Pink Floyd (which he maintained was "psychedelic funk-rock") was always getting lumped in with his superior subgenre. It was hilarious.
