Title: The Melvins in 2019...
Post by: johnnyg on November 05, 2018, 10:30:41 PM
So, as we know, the Melvins usually use the winter months for recording. Does anyone have any inside info on what's in the works? Does the Sabbath single forecast the 'History of Rock' album they were talking about?

Also, as a fan, what would you like to hear from them in 2019?

I'll start- I LOVE 'basses' and really liked 'pat', but I'd like to see the Buzz, Dale, Jeff, Steve lineup do something far out in the vein of 'pigs of the roman empire' or 'honkey'. I certainly wouldn't say no to new jelvins, either. Basically, I would be down for anything unexpected.

I know we are back to the UK at some point. I’m not sure when that will be exactly yet, but its definitely one of the things we will be doing. We’ve got more massive tours and some recording. More of the same, a lot more of just what we do.

Now that Grumpy's is gone need a new gathering place. Any ideas for 2019?

not that I won't give it a chance of course.  I just want melvins to bite.    I wouldn't expect a bite from this collaboration.

Seeing melvins recently, I couldn't help think the current line-up would be perfect to play a Colossus of Destiny live show. Add Jon Spencer with 'wire' and leaping around the audience screaming, "THE FUCKING BLUUUUUES IS THE SHIT!" etc. and I could see that biting. I'd even come to Michigan for that.

I dig Jon Spencer and I think he is underrated. I'd set my expectations for a Melvins/JS release at, like, an upgraded Haze/Melvins collab level.

Also the new album from Spencer really crushes. The sound of it, the band, and Jon as good as ever.

I'm sorry but my senses do not lie for I am the Great Carnac!

Jon Spencer-Melvins collab, It's probably already in the can coming down the pipes all in good time.  :-$

And, AND I'll bet it's gonna rock your socks off....Infact that is why I'm betting it's a top secret project for the time being.

I'll bet it's going to match "Hold it in" in terms of "WOW" factor.

SO glad to hear the News about Hepa-titus Melvins show, that's very good to hear. this pleases me.

Even a Melvins Hepa-Titus split would be something too....OOooo Nooo!!! INDEEEEEEED!!!!

THIS SONG IS CALLED..........THE CHANTING.....OF THE PRIESTS!!!!!!

Furthermore, I'd really love a little Modular Synth collaborative, whether it's a live improv one-off kind of affair, it would be asking a lot but that's why it could be a throwaway and be Justified as such...I really enjoy Throbbing gristle during the Christmas holiday season to Augment all the horrid Christmas music being forcefully pumped into your buttery ear holes.

Where has Sir David Scott Stone been hiding?

I've got to say he is sorely missed (no pun intended) ...He's the Reason my Ears are still ringing since June 16th of the year 2000. People were not very happy with his performance. I found it more than satisfying to my aural senses despite having severe hearing loss in my left ear in the high end spectrum...so severe I can't hear hi-hat tracks or ride cymbals on my left side.  =D>

Jesus... for real? To this day? I've been to very loud shows (Jucifer and Swans are top 2) but that's legit scary.
The club should pay damages for allowing the volume to be this high...

I hope they put out a new album in 2019. Then we'll have ten studio albums in one decade (I'm counting AWWL&D as a singular piece and not two separate albums).

Also hoping for a Crover/Redd Kross east coast/midwest tour.

Lastly, with OFF! playing Muddy Roots I wonder if it'll be Rubacalba or Crover on that lineup...

Time will tell I suppose.

There's not much news about it. Pinkus just remarked in an interview earlier this year about how Melvins have a Rolling Stones cover album recorded called Sticky Feet. That was all that was mentioned. For all we know it might not even appear next year. I mean, the Void Manes one has been in the can since something like 2011!!

saw them 2 nights ago in a much smaller club than last summer and I thought they were much tighter as a 4 man band with 2 basses and had worked out a lot of the kinks. both Pinkus and Steven were playing fills and especially Steven on harmony parts that were mind blowing and smoother in their delivery since last time. I won't mind if and when they go back to one bass, but i'm glad I got to see this line up twice now. same as how the two drummer lineup got better as they toured more together. that's why I prefer Nude With Boots or (A)SA. they were playing off each other and anticipating where to deviate from playing everything the same at the same time.

How can I book the boys for Chattanooga, TN? There are enough lame stoner doom bands in the area, so I'm sure it'd be a sellout show. High on Fire packed our now-defunct Revelry Room in 2015

Buzz is a pirate. Two earrings in the right side means he has two parrots.

Not to mention that Badass Gold Tooth.  8) 8) 8)

Which Came first, the earring or the Grill?

I guess the Earring, both of these things are cool.

I saw Josh Homme with a black tooth, someone said it's platinum...apparently he's always had a thing about teeth in dreams, I have had weird teeth dreams too so I guess it's not unusual.

Anyway...Melvins and Foo fighters together, could have been worse, you know? No one invited Courtney or Rob Zombie did they?

I hope That Dave and Buzz reconciled maybe or had a dramatic sit down, better than ghosting eachother in the hallway like high school...or maybe it's Just for the best to not think about it.

It would bother me, I think it would but I couldn't tell you how I'd feel in either persons shoes..So I'd Just move forward.

Of course not. I'd just like to hear what's going on/planned in Melvins land. A new tour - as much as it doesn't overly interest me in and of itself - means a new record!! I do however like checking out their setlists though and watching the occasional video. Another bonus of Melvins on tour is more Melvins interviews get uploaded.

"Fall" is Autumn right? In that case i think you may be disappointed. I can't see the band going that long until a US tour goes ahead. Perhaps if they do though, a Melvins show might occur on one of your free days.

I wouldn't mind a tour in July/August to be honest. Last year that first leg came on a work day for the Louisville date so I couldn't catch them until the second leg in Indianapolis.

i like Steve as bassist but watching this video made me think how much i miss Jared tone on this song. also wonder what's your opinion about the double bass line up. mine is the same i had for the double drums line up : less is better

saw them 2 nights ago in a much smaller club than last summer and I thought they were much tighter as a 4 man band with 2 basses and had worked out a lot of the kinks. both Pinkus and Steven were playing fills and especially Steven on harmony parts that were mind blowing and smoother in their delivery since last time.

I would've liked to have seen them a second time on this tour. I thought the double bass made the overall sound muddier but went it worked, man it fucking worked! Let it All Be and fucking Eye Flys was jaw dropping.

Is the Crystal Ballroom a harsh venue? I've never been there.

Its an old dance hall that's been converted into a venue.   The views from everywhere on the floor are awful, the floor itself is usually split down this odd angle for 21 and over, the sound is mediocre, and the crowds that go to shows there are usually only half interested in whats going on onstage.  If you are early enough you can stand on a bench at the wall of the venue and you might be able to see something ;)

It would be perfect for an actual ball (with its bouncy floor), but for music it is probably my least liked venue in town.

Although I did see the Melvins there once (20th anniv, with Mudhoney opening).  It was a good show, but I'd rather see them play just about anywhere else.
They probably got a pretty good offer from Sabertooth, so good on them.

It’s not horrible.  Seen Melvins there a couple times.  Once when I was seeing them there I was in line to grab a beer and all the sudden I notice I’m standing next to Krist Novoselic.  I had a few beers in me so I blurted out “I’d vote for you for lieutenant governor” (he was running up in Washington at the time).  He handed me some of his campaign materials and we talked for a few minutes.

In regard to the upcoming show...I’m just not excited about the premise of an all-day brewfest leading up to a Melvins set.  Will not be a fun crowd to be around.

btw, I just bought my tix for the Tacoma show on the 3rd and the link on the McMenamin's site is incorrectly going to a page to buy tickets for the Crystal Ballroom show on the 4th. Took a bit of digging to find the correct page for the Tacoma show, so for ease for anyone else who's looking to buy them here is the correct link:

stoked to check out that new venue, sounds pretty cool. They just spent a pretty penny refurbishing it.

Pearl Jam and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron is teasing a mysterious new recording project with Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne. Cameron has shared two videos on his Instagram story of the trio working on music in Sun Valley, CA. Hawkins fronted a one off Soundgarden reunion performance in Los Angeles at the ‘I Am The Highway’ Chris Cornell tribute show in Los Angeles last month. The Melvins were the first performers at the show, introduced by Soundgarden’s surviving members.

Im always a little amazed when people see things in the total opposite of myself, but at the same time that's cool. I admit i would love to see more of the two bass line-up in a studio context. To see them really explore those possibilities more like the dual drummers thing was on (A)SA through to TBSM. I mean oddly, for all it's attention/focus on the line-up prior, PAT didn't really explore the dual basses AT ALL!! It all just sounded like ONE bass. Many reviews said the same and interestingly, Steve himself said he was mostly away at the time that the album was quickly written/recorded.

So yes, i'd love to see a "proper" two bass Melvins record. But i think there's plenty of room for other things too. I mean, we don't even know if Trevor's apparent involvement IS Melvins Lite. It could be 3 bassists or some other unexpected and ultimately interesting combination. For the record though - i actually think Freak Puke was pretty damn good!! A clear high point in newer Melvins releases. (minus 'Tommy Goes Berserk' of course!)

I disagree I can hear a lot of dual bass work on that album could be played by one guy in a studio setting but to me PAT is quite a unique Melvins listening experience. I might upset a few here with this but to me it's not an album Buzz & Dale would've ever come up with on their own.

It could be sure but a pic of Dunn on an upright bass just sent a shudder through my spine. It dominates on that album too much.

Freak Puke was and is one of my personal favorites from the last 10 years. And the shows from that tour were very very special (Including ending each one with the Definitive mind blowing version of Shevil) Trevor Dunn is a monster of talent and creativity.

I find myself saying this over and over, but what makes Melvins great is their constant willingness to try new things, take chances and change. I'd be thrilled for more of that lineup to surface, They supposedly recorded a ton of material when they made that record.

Flutter, Grim, Ballsdeep and I saw this with Dunn playing electric bass. It was great to compare that with an upright bass a day later.

One of the greatest days I've ever had in life was seeing the Melvins Lite in Hamilton.

Trevor was about an inch from the ceiling the whole show.

We had free beer from a bar down the street with live music that day...it was beautiful...walked back to get coffee and listen outside to the Melvins sound check...Dale with his Yankee Cigs.

Needless to say Trevor is awesome...Just fuckin' hands down the coolest.

If we had to settle on ONE regular Melvins bassist for the foreseeable, i would go with Trevor. Well... either him or Pinkus. ...or alternatively get Kevin back!

Interesting used of we there. I love Trevor but the dude is too busy to really be in a band full time at this point.

In a perfect world, I could imagine Trevor full time with Upright and electric crushing everyone in the path of Melvins.

anyone listen to this lately?

I guess the upright because that's what that tour was made for, but I was excited to see the electric version because it happened just twice and only Alaskans and Hawaiians saw it!

I remember you telling me about "free beer"  outside the show and as tempting as that offer was I had to be a responsible driver.

More recording work currently going on it seems with the band at their Sound Of Sirens studios. Buzz, Dale and Steve in attendance.

Freak Puke was the last great melvins album. It's the spiritual heir to The Bootlicker. Athough the version of "A Growing Disgust" I saw them do with Jared in 2012 is the superior version.

I dug the Melvins Lite live shows I attended more than the studio release. Not to say the studio release was bad, a solid release for sure and a highlight of Melvins releases of the last decade. Tho I was expecting (and hoping) the Lite would be more light so to say. Certainly more upbeat and rocking than I thought it would be. I really think Dunn on the acoustic fits well though.

Yeah, it was pretty killer when they whipped out Shevil as the closer for that tour. Holy Barbarians, Mr. Rip Off, Eye Flys were other standouts ...

After seeing this early footage of the Lite rolling this Bootlicker gem out I was really hoping they'd keep it in the set for the shows I saw ... alas, it was not so. But damn, they kill this one ...

That's great stuff! I would have been happy if they had included more from The Bootlicker also. That one or "Up The Dumper" could have killed... One thing you can always count on with Melvins is they will not do what you expect or wish for.
