Title: the lyrics to "we Reach"...
Post by: j.m. on June 12, 2006, 05:00:04 PM
i've been a "Melvinhead" about '92, i used to listen to the old stuff righteously,
but man, lemme tell ya; that is one of the most weirdest songs.
i always wondered what that song is about; in the line
"i coulda hoped for a better piece of your man"?!? was Buzz alluding to
homosexuality or something? : :-k
(don't get me wrong: i don't care if Buzz is bi, i'm just curious)
"better times i wrote for glass, less, wind"?!? what is that referring to?
anyone wanna clue me in?? :?

I have no idea, and I don't want to either, but wouldn't it be great if Buzz is actually refering to the interpretator's (is that valid English?) homosexuality, because of his or hers conclusion?

Repelled by just the sight
you take me you feel me comin on
It repells the big strong man
Now you want to take me for everything I am
Gotta word that's coming up coming up my throat.
It's a long ass word, gonna make me choke.
I like to hold my pride
right in between my hands.
so I can feel it hang.

I could have hoped for a better piece of your man.
Better times I wrote for glass, less, wind.
From both behinds in back, we're reaching one of each, in time.
Heart like a picture to be.
Hardly, we reach. (said in orgasmic voice)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its clearly a song about buttfucking netween men.

Than what makes you think it's 'man'? The lyric sheet?

Lyric sheets are wrong sometimes. They messed up a few lines on Nirvana's "In Utero".

i thought it was mind too.

i thought joy division was gay when on their first album, the song disorder went something like this-
"I've been waiting for a guy to come and take me by the hand,
Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
These sensations barely interest me for another day,
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling, take the shock away."

later I found out it was guide instead of guy.

i think buzz is probably a little homophobic, but dale isn't as quite.
i mean, and that's a guy's thing, well, a "regular guy's thing"
but dale wears speedo's and little dresses (i like his dresses)
just in the interviews, buzz comes off as being a little homophobic.
one interview, it was either jello of dss talking, and i thought both of them were gay.
my gaydar/homophobiadar is really fucked up though.

didn't know Don Knotts got into some trouble.....

Uh....this ending of the song was just meant to be sort of thier version of the Stooges "We Will Fall", from what I remember being told.
Homosexual clues aside, I think that is all it was.

I really love this song. It's always inspired me. But my interpratation of " I could have hoped for a better piece of your man", was more genarational, Buzzo speaking to the past. As in speaking to a father or our fore fathers in that they could have been so much more, because "HARDLY! We Reach!". Thats always been my take, but that is the great thing about Buzz's lyrics. So jive and abstract, they are wonderful twist on language. Everyone hears what they want to in them for they don't have that ,spelling things out for you, thang going on.
I remember Buzz calling Beck gay. Probably why he never wrote anything for Crybaby like they wanted. Buzz has a great sense of humor , so most of the time you have to take his gay comments with a grain of salt.

I remember seeing them in '00 when they first started wearing the mumus, and onstage Buzz said, "Someone in the audience said we look like a bunch of homos," to which Dale then said, "Only a man knows what a man needs."

"Marge:"I think he prefers the company of men..."

Homer:"Who doesnt??""

great episode.  Was that the gay steel workers episode?  My friends dad is a steel worker, and my friend is a HUGE simpsons fan.  When that episode came out, we ripped on him so bad it wasnt even funny...

Repelled by just the sight
you take me you feel me comin on
It repells the big strong man
Now you want to take me for everything I am

THe speaker knows that the other person (the target) is out to take advantage of him or to get an advantage over him.  In actuality, they're equally or near equally matched, circling each other in hate.

Gotta word that's coming up coming up my throat.
It's a long ass word, gonna make me choke.

For whatever reason, the speaker is unable to actually express his hatred for the other or his opinion.  He attempts to socially defend himself from the other without being obvious about it.

I like to hold my pride
right in between my hands.
so I can feel it hang.

Not entirely clear on the function in relation to the overall, but it forms a bridge between the first and second halves of the song.

I could have hoped for a better piece of your man.

Now the speaker turns to someone else, referencing the first person.  Basically, I interpret this as "I wish you had ended up with someone better."

Better times I wrote for glass, less, wind.

This is tricky, but very cool once you figure it out.

For glass, i.e. false, worthless fake gems, i.e. nothign of value.  Less, less than that: Wind, nothing, empty air.
So the line could translate:
In better times, I would do this for little or nothing.  (Or, "If times were better, I would do this for little or nothing")

From both behinds in back, we're reaching one of each, in time.

So what is the cause of the problem?  A love triangle.  Both the speaker, and the second person being spoken do are doing these things behind the back of the hated one.  Of course, what we do behind the backs of others, we must do behind our own backs, as we decieve ourselves.

Heart like a picture to be.

Another break in subject.  Another great but tricky line.
"Heart" an obvious symbol for love, and in many Melvins songs, emotion in general.  Like a picture to be,  in other words,
To be pictured.  The line could be translated as "Love as I picture it to be," or "I picture [this situation] in the way I want it to be, which is love.

Hardly, we reach. (said in orgasmic voice)

But hat picture he holds in his mind cannot be attained.  But, neither can he stop reaching for it.  As in "A man's reach should exceed his grasp"
