Melvins Show Reviews / Boston - 10/08/06
October 09, 2006, 01:33:25 AM
Ah, what a lovely day.
Before the show, my friend John and I went to King Richard's Faire. It's this medieval fair they have down in Carver, MA every fall, complete with RPG nerds dressing up in their finest Renaissance clothing. It was more or less a total ripoff; it cost $24 just to get in and the beer was like $6. The wenches weren't even that hot. Lame.

Anyways, on to the show...

So we got off the T on Comm Ave and just as we got through the doorway, the Melvins (including Mackie, I believe) walked right by us. We started following them, thinking that they were heading towards the club. We caught up to them and I said "hey, Buzz". He looked over and said hey and we chatted for a bit. I told him about the stupid fair I went to and he asked if anyone died. Then they went into an Indian restaurant, presumably to eat Indian food. Buzz is a nice fellow, even when he's hungry.

Anyways, we got to the show around 8. Another friend of mine bailed, so I tried to sell the extra ticket, which I eventually did. We went inside and I bought the skull t-shirt. There weren't any posters for the show, even though I'm pretty sure I saw one at gigposters.com. The merch guy was really nice. You should give him money so he can "quit this fucking job and go home."

Ghostigital was interesting. Kind of sludgey/experemental techno with an Iclandic guy ranting over the whole thing. I wish Porn or Altamont played instead, but it was still pretty amusing.

After Ghostigital played, Big Business came on and kicked some serious ass. They played 2 songs, then Dale came out and played 2 songs with them, then they played 2 more songs. I didn't recognize some of them, so they were either new, or I haven't listened to "Head for the Shallow" enough. Jared's stage banter was pretty amusing, especially when Dale was on stage. I can't really recall what they said, but it made me laugh.

Then Buzz came out and they started the set. First of all, the two drummer thing was really amazing. Even better than I expected. Since I'm probably the only person here who hasn't downloaded the new album, it was my first time hearing all the new stuff with the exception of Civilized Worm and Blood Witch. It was weird seeing the Melvins play songs I didn't know. That hasn't happened since the first time I saw them. The set list was basically the same as all the other shows. I was hoping for some Boris and was a little surprised that they didn't play Night Goat. But whatever. It was still a great show. Also, the crowd was very calm tonight. There was no pit, except for one guy (there's always that one guy at a show that manages to piss everyone off, isn't there?) and the head banging was minimal. The crowd was still really into it, though.

I'll try to bring my camera on Wednesday for the Northampton gig so's I can take lots and lots of pictures.

Great show. I suck at writing reviews, so I'll make this short and sweet.
The Melvins' set started with DSS (yup, he played bass) doing a bit of solo noise. Then Dale came out and started hitting cymbals. Then Buzz came out, made some noise and went into POTRE. It was a short set, but it rocked and I really dug the song selection. The order is slightly incorrect and I might be missing a song, but here's what they played:

Pigs of the Roman Empire
AMAZON
Bloated Pope
Let it all be
Night Goat
Hooch
Hag Me (i think)

After that, the guys put black ski-masks on and started Plethysmograph and Jello came running out. He might be old, but he still puts on a hell of a show.
I kind of moved back in the crowd when Jello came on since I was very tired/dehydrated. From what I remember, they played (not in order):

Plethysmograph
McGruff the Crime Dog
Yuppie Cadillac
The lighter side of Global Terrorism
Islamic Bomb
Caped Crusader
Voted off the Island

And I think they played more off of Seig Howdy. For the encore they did Rock and Roll McDonalds and Holiday in Cambodia, both of which ruled.
I'll let Vinney fill you in on the rest as I'm sure he will. I can't wait to read that interview, man.

Melvins Discussion / Upcoming Jello/Melvins Tour...
October 03, 2005, 06:14:34 PM
I just read this on Ipecac.com:

"The Melvins will also be doing a set of their own preceding the Jello/Melvins set."

Now that fucking rules.

Melvins Discussion / Tribute Album Tracklist...
May 27, 2005, 11:20:29 AM
From fracturedtransmitter.com:

The official street date for We Reach: The Music of the Melvins is August 23, 2005. This tribute to one of the most influential bands ever features some of the leaders of the underground music scene today, and some incredible collaborations.
Here's a tentative track list. Please note that this is not official yet, and some songs and artists may be added or dropped from the final release. This may not be the final song order either.

Does anyone know what issue this is in? I think it was from 1994. I remember seeing it at my friends house a long time ago when I wasn't very into the Melvins. Now I want to read it.
