Melvins Discussion / Re: Ozma/Bullhead Bundle
« on: August 23, 2019, 05:11:17 AM »
Received my bundle today. The Ozma vinyl colour is blueish clear marbled: Did anyone else notice that there are two differnt blue tones?
I have two of these blue Ozmas /77; the vinyl colour is identical, but the blues on the sleeves are different:  these are just cosmetic differences.

I have two Bullheads /55; the vinyl colour is different, one of them is green with flecks of black inside; the sleeves are identical. I'm sure when you find different bits in with the vinyl, they're just remnants from whatever they were pressing before.

Those Ozmas are both numbered /77. I have 2 similar Bullheads, the one numbered /55 and one numbered /37 with the same cover and colour, but there have been faces painted on the three vegetables just similar to the t-shirt that came with the bundle. I have been wondering if it was a joke by the guy who bought it at the show in CA but now I know it is legit.

Nice collection! Nice to see one of the GPT Lisa Pemrick versions in good hands. I hope you did not have to pay too much for the Stag test pressing.
? In the picture?

Yes, in the top row second from the left and between the Honkys.

ipecac recs also has 25 years anniversary in 2019. so there's a chance.... considering the general vinyl sales increase and ipecac also pressed vinyl of most of the recent melvins albums.
It would be the 25th anniversary of Man's Ruin's first release this year, too. Electroretard on vinyl.

Funny enough, Electroretard has a test pressing but, was never released. To have a full release would be great as well!

I must be dreaming but swear I saw it on LP...but memory fails me now...that was back in my psychedelic Haze. was quite possible it was only the CD...Which I owned and no longer...or do I?

There have been some bootlegs of Electroretard our there which I do not own. From what I hear the sound was horrible.

Wonder if the BULLHEAD shirt will be sold later individually, I’m guessing it’s BUNDLE EXCLUSIVE

Asked the band on FB if it would be up for sale separately and the answer was "no" :-(

Haha!  eBay is silly as usual....

People trying to sell a copy before its even on sale or just ordered it?

I know Rise Above had a policy for a time that if people tried that shit they'd refund the order and ban the IP/user outright.

I wish them that the covers arrive with bent corners and they have to refund some of the money! It is weird that people sell stuff they do not hold in their hands.

I've been thinking about it for a while now, probably around a year, maybe longer. Just trying to figure out how they've evolved over the years and it's not about distortion or heaviness. It seems that in the past, a lot of the Melvin's essential DNA, what makes them Melvins is is that they presented themselves with the sideshow bob appearance, the muumuu, the gardening gloves, the ridiculous lyrics, the sense of humour. BUT. At the same time their music was totally opposite, it was nasty, heavy, punishing, savage, sharp or sludgy or disturbing. They worked in unison, two almost ironic juxtapositions if you will. This lasted for ages.

From Dadaism nonsensical lyrics of Ozma mixed with brutal delivery. The quite clean precises delivery of the bootlicker opposed by a sinister tone and sharp delivery of all those songs. loose laid back feel on Honky while strongly opposed by a disturbing ambience throughout. The more you look at it the more it appears, the stark contrast they've always maintained.

However I could never place my finger on why but only recently I think it's because the newer albums don't have this.
It seems these days the ridiculousness of the Melvin s themselves has actually translated across into the music and to me, it just doesn't work as well.  they play a straight game these days.

nstead of the odd contradiction of the seriousness of their music mixed in with their sense of humour...these days it's crept across so much so that the contradiction is lost and all that is sometimes left is just that. 99 Bottles, or some of the covers.

It's not about heavy guitars or Melvins not making Lysol anymore. It's more the fact that that I think they've lost that essential ingredient which made Melvins the Melvins. It's not a diss, it's not a criticism but it's definitely the feeling I get when I hear their modern records to those of 15+ years ago.

There are some nasty/solid bits in this PAT album and the contractitions are stil there, but there are times where it just goes straight up and misses out on thisjuxtaposition d the'yve had for so many years. dont abnd me again i'm actually half drunk lol and typed this out in one go

I understand your point and also have the feeling that some of the latest releases lack this "meaner" sound that made earlier releases very special to me. But I am happy they come back to this with some of their later stuff like the Sabbath EP.

how soon?  :o
HAZE:
Here’s the scoop on Melvins Honky reissue. This Sunday at noon (Feb. 3) we’ll cut loose with the first of the fancy silk screened edition (‘white on white’ Edition of 200) and a small batch of numbered sets. The following Sunday we’ll be releasing the other 3 editions.
Cheapie CD version will get cut loose this Sunday as well! There will be a more affordable factory sleeve edition in 4-8 weeks so if that’s your cuppa just skip these editions.

Thanks Jules, we will have to set our alarm clocks ;-)

Thanks Jules: I did not know that there is a diploma thesis out there covering The Melvins! Great read!

His thesis became Rokko's Adventures 5.1 !

Yes, that is what I understood. And why did I have to write something about elekctro ceramics? Haha!

I'm sure there's someone on the CeramTec forum who's shitting themselves right about now as they've just found your thesis online  :D

Thank you, Jules! Now I do not feel so insignificant anymore :D!
