Melvins Discussion / Re: Melvins song titles
« on: April 08, 2020, 08:49:33 PM »
These type of names all seem to come from songs buzz would have played learning guitar in the 80s. Black Stooges = Black Flag + The Stooges

Not sure what the Bock would be.

Seems some songs get titles based on the lyrics, but not these. It's like a code. Remember Buzz doesn't even know the note names less read any music tabs.

"Bar-X-The-Rocking-Em" might refer to "Rock Em Sock Em" by the Mentors. Which leaves Bar-X which could suggest The Ex "Barricades" but that's only a guess. Any other thoughts on. This one?

I'm now quite certain "Eye Flys" is "TV Eye" (Stooges) vs "Halo of Flies" (Alice Cooper).

Still fascinated by "Mombius Hibachi" (same derivation as "Hooch?") and "Charmicarmicat" and "It's Shoved" and I suspect they could be nods to be something.

"Science of Modern America" could be The Scientists vs "Youth of America" (Wipers).

Other recurring words that might be clues... "Bloat" / " Roman" / "Bird" / "She" / "Evil" / "Teeth"

My memories of Alive At... are mostly of "Bar-X" and a weird bit of banter, I think. It's been so long since I listened to it. Thought maybe "Charmicarmicat" was on there but that's probably Third Man I'm confusing for this one's "Boris." I could just go listen to it and look up the track listing instead of spewing misremembering here. I'm sure this reissue will drive me to it eventually.

Melvins Album Discussion / King Buzzo w/ Trevor Dunn - Six Pack EP
« on: March 19, 2020, 01:28:46 AM »
My Amrep package arrived today with Cheapy CD inside. Since my only available CD player is in the car I've only heard the first 3 1/2 tracks.

Six Pack is of course the Black Flag cover heard on the Amrep YouTube. It's great.

Power of Life I did not recognize. It sounded like a doubled recording of a written bass solo.

Science has been available to stream in advance of the Ipecac album for a while. It's great.

Mock She really immediately struck me.  Joni/Jaco is the first touchpoint I can think of but that mostly because you've got Trevor's virtuosic bass fiddling and Buzz with a very straight 70s radio harmony, but still clearly Buzz. If you've lamented any classic rock sounds from the Melvins, don't worry, I assure you this is fresh and different.

I haven't heard the last half of the record yet. Still worth it already.

Electroretard has the Revolve Summer Version and that left field version of GPT. Those are different enough, but I also don't really regard Electroretard as a proper album. I hear it more as an EP of covers (Wipers/Floyd/Cows) with this other stuff as various degrees of filler in there. The version of Tipping The Lion didn't seem to be sufficiently distinct for my ears to warrant inclusion. Shitstorm is annoying on many levels. It makes me laugh at a minute, that was a good call for the B&B/ER rerelease.

GGIIBBYY has a great lead-in and ending. The middle of the song I'm mostly waiting for him to yell about fried chicken.

The versions of "It's Shoved" and "Leeech" are superior to my ears, but not enough that they become canonical. I always thought a song has to be drastically different AND improved to warrant being on two albums.

The worst is the alt version of "Don't Cry" on GNR Use Your Illusion II. Why the fuck did we need the same song, literally 75% identical recording, on two albums released simultaneously?

"(New Wave) Polly" on Incesticide was unnecessary.

With the early Melvins stuff and Ipecac reissues I recall the poignant comment "How many fucking versions of At A Crawl do we really need?"

I'm a purist and if I want to listen to a band's discography I don't want to hear the same song twice.

If it had been a nine track album "Lexicon Devil " "Specimen" "GIBBY" "Poison" "Funky Dogs" "Way of the World" "Theme" "HDYF" "FastFwd/Theresa Screams/In The Rain/Double Troubled/Jacksonville" it would be a classic on par with Electroretard or Crybaby. Imagine that Roll Another One style bouillabaisse at the tail end.
Of those songs Lexicon, HDYF, and Specimen are my standouts.

Yes, I selfishly hope every home studio is a productive little quarantine for the coming days.

Four of six songs are not on the album (judging by titles). Any of these others look like covers?

Six Pack
Power of Life
Science in Modern America
Mock She
Into the 1970's
Drug Trip

Sounds awesome!

What're the chances these are all the same songs on the Ipecac CD I already pre-ordered, 50%?

I love how Buzz starts into a sort of rote answer about his philosophy of short term planning or something and then the host tosses off this cliche of "only place you can go is up" and then quickly reacts to that by realizing it could also fall apart. I live for those uncomfortable moments.

What's weirder to me about this video, beyond any weird video making The Melvins have engaged in sporadically, is the shot of random Lorax close-up and then this awkward-looking picking technique she does coming out of Buzz's solo.

Melvins are mentioned in song 20 as having covered Nile Song
