Melvins Discussion / DOD Buzz Box
« on: April 23, 2004, 06:19:48 PM »
GW: One fallout of success is having products named after you. Buzz, weren't you a consultant on a foot pedal design that used your name?
KIM: It wasn't the DOD Grunge Pedal, was it? Have you seen that? The inside of the accompanying booklet says: "How to get the Melvins sound; how to get the Accused sound." I bought the thing, not to use it, but simply as a souvenir.
GW: I remember you saying, "Great, I just bought a pedal to make me sound like me."
ALL: [laugh]
BUZZ: It's called the Buzz Box, and it is put out by DOD. I had nothing to do with it. I mean, does my guitar really sound that bad? [laughs] The guys at DOD are kind of crazy; I have to give them credit for that. A guy there was always bugging me at shows about how we got the sound on the Eggnog record. I used this thin called a Blue Box, an octave divider from the early Seventies. So this guy says, "I want to design a pedal; we'll call it the Buzz Box and get that sound out of it." But it wasn't so much that he wanted to do an endorsement or anything. I think he just likes the sound of it. So he came to one of our shows an looked inside the Blue Box. He kind of duplicated it and combine it with the Grunge Pedal in a new pedal. I have to admire DOD for putting out something that insane. Yes, the Buzz Box is totally worthless. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner. [laughs]
I ended up using it on a few noise things on Stoner Witch, but the record that we used it on most was one that came out before Stoner Witch called Prick, a total noise crap record we did strictly for the weirdness factor. Complete and utter nonsense, at total joke. We've taken a lot of shit for it, too. It came out in August. I would say it has no redeeming social value whatsoever and is easily the stupidest record we've ever done. There's something to be said for that.

found this at the melvins shack with help from green honey.  gw is guitar world and kim kim thayll of soundgarden.   thx green honey.

Melvins Album Discussion / Writing credits on Lysol?
« on: April 15, 2004, 04:39:53 PM »
hey a friend of mine pointed out to me a while back the correlation between the cover of lysol and the lyrics in koollegged.  the lyrics are supposed to be "jesus as an indian" not "jesus and an indian"  i think buzz still has this painting hanging at his crib.  just an interesting little note from a reliable source.

and has anyone discussed that skeeter is les claypool?

It's a different Skeeter.

Incidentally, this track was on Grohl's "Pocketwatch" cassette, listed as "Just Another Story About Skeeter Thompson".

"All music, instruments and vocals by Dave G"

I could never work out what it is doing on Buzz's record.
in the song dave mentions amsterdam.  primus was on tour with nirvana in europe at that time. and if you have seen pics of claypool with sleeveless shirts youu will notice a tatoo of a mosquito on his right arm. its pretty big too.

yeah i've had that for a while.  its really funny.  they talk some serious smack about ozzy.  it sucks when you think of one thing about someone you look up to and they are completely different when you meet them later.  fortunately buzz is exactly as i thought he was.

Melvins Discussion / Heaviest Album???
« on: April 09, 2004, 08:50:58 PM »
this is what sealed it for me.  i went to a party and everybody dropped a bunch of acid and smoked some weed.  we were getting pretty loud and someone then put in gluey porch treatments. by the end of the album, the room was completely silent.  everyone had been mesmerized by the music. then someone spoke up and said "dude, i've been melvined.".

we drove around all morning yelling "MELVINS!!!" at everyone outside. nice.

Melvins Discussion / What is it about them that creates fanaticism?

well most bands that cite the melvins as influences either sound nothing like them, or sound like them but are just shit song writers.  it is very disappointing.
well influence doesnt mean "copy"
yeah people just want to be heavy like the melvins, WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE SO GIVE IT UP FUXXoRS!!!!!!!!

i keep a copy of a pic of buzz at the age of 16 in my wallet.  someone in the melvins camp used yearbook pics of buzz dale and (i think) joe on mailers for the fan club.  we copied buzz's and put it on a flier.  nobody in the melvins knew they were used on the mailers  and would supposedly get pissed if they found out.  oops hope they don't read this.  8)

i think its all three that you go ten on and bad things happen.  on a side note,  kurt cobain would use half-dead batteries in his effects to make interesting noises, but i would use an adapter with a half or three-fourths voltage required.  this worked on old DOD's. i don't know if it worked on anything else.

Melvins Discussion / the live ballad of dwight fry
« on: April 08, 2004, 10:36:35 PM »
i've looked all over slsk and numerous trading pages.  does anyone out there have a live version of the ballad of dwight fry somewhere around may of 1994.  this was, of course, right after kurt's death and when they played in nashville.  when they did dwight fry buzz added a third verse.  this is one of the few songs i actually know the verses to and when it was supposed to finish he started singing lines like "27 years young" and "wasted life".  buzz was incredibly upset about kurt's death and this is one of the few times i've heard him really confront this issue without being kinda smartass about it.  something for you guys to search for.
