A history of drunks from the Freak Puke tour. There is an upright bass solo right in the middle of it and then it just picks right back up where it left off. That version is top notch
... and Captain Pungent.....and Bertha's..... and Shevil.....
"Charmicarmicat" off live at third man was pretty epic. Did they play that elsewhere around that time?
Yeah, that was fantastic. They did it in the Eggnog portion of the Endless Residency tour. I caught them at Festsaal Kreuzberg Berlin that tour, one of the greatest Melvins experiences to date. (With Melvins Lite being in town a couple days prior)
Oscar, I think you really nailed it. I think that 2003 European festival is one of my favorite recorded Melvins performances all around, and you're right "The Bloat" destroys on there. Even better than the rendition on THE END from around the same time with Kevin.
I also love that Ottobar recording of the Melvins Lite. Their rendition of "Let It All Be" on that tour was also so strong.
Absolutely, I would say Shevil from that set is also definitive. Trevor really brings something unique to the group, I hope he comes back for more.
As far as a compilation, I'm down! That would be a fun deep-dive.
Good question, I think stuff like Anaconda has gone through so many lyrical perversions that the phrasing just hits harder at this point. Plus, they play it twice as fast by now, which really highlights how structurally weird but catchy that song is.
Boris either with Mark in '97 or with Jared and Coady
You mentioned Eye Flys, the versions with Trevor to me are definitive. They truly played it the way it's supposed to be played. Lost my shit hearing this live. https://youtu.be/Me-m5udUq3g?t=160
These picks might not be that crazy in terms of their live arrangements, but I feel like they all captured an essential attitude/flavour/aggression/intricacy/whathaveyou.
