Melvins Discussion / Re: Skateboard Bundle

I don't know if I think I can afford this or not, but I'm probably dumb enough to try. I haven't really looked at the decks before... any ideas as to what kind of price range this could fall in? It might help to have an idea, so I can be ready to press those keys when this shows up.

:D Very nice, I wish I could afford.

Jeez, I guess I picked a bad time to take a break from the laptop this afternoon; logged back in and found out that Joyful Noise posted this, and they are of course sold out already.... did anyone here manage to get one?

Ummm.... is there any other way to know about these releases besides bending over and taking it from behind from facebook?

Hi there! In theory, I kind of agree with this, but if there's one thing this whole pandemic seems to be underlining, it's that our entire post-industrialized way of doing things is in serious need of a reset. It is kind of scary how this virus affects literally everyone on the entire planet, but I can't help but fall back on the flight emergency oxygen mask analogy. The basic protocol being that you have to take care of yourself before you're going to be able to help anyone else.

I get it, though. I'm a former independent booker, and one of the most important lessons I learned many years ago, is that *if* you can afford to take a hit, then maybe you don't try to sue the small struggling indie club that couldn't pay the band what was agreed on, because they just couldn't get enough people in the door. I've also handed bands money out of my own wallet in situations like that, to make sure they could eat and put gas in their van, and hopefully do better in the next town. I've also worked in clubs where major acts cancelled a tour, and we chose to refund tickets, because frankly, if we were going to go under, we were *not* going to take everyone else's money with us.

It does seem like a good idea to be aware of the needs of other people, but sometimes you're just not going to be able to save the world. There are a *lot* of people in different sectors that are being affected: businesses, homeowners, renters, etc, and I can't help but feel that it's about time the 1% (for want of a better term) should step up and do their part to help keep things working by forgiving debt at some level for anyone whose financial situation has been seriously impacted. Meanwhile, the rest of us have to seriously think about how we can re-invent how we do things, because it's painfully obvious (to me, at least) that the old existing model has been broken for a long time.

Sorry to have apparently derailed this, I'm not trying to preach or pick a fight here, but this is all stuff I've been thinking about for a while now, and this current situation just kind of brings it home, I think.

I understand why refunds aren't being offered right off the bat...these businesses are likely to go under with no music.
Its literally, do we want to be able to stay in business to offer future shows?

Sure, not everybody can afford to let the venue hold on to their hard earned dollars, until a future unspecified show...and I'm glad you were able to get your money back (as you should).

...but on the other hand there may not be future shows at these venues unless they are able to hold on to at least a portion of the funds they had in their hands for shows that couldn't take place.

Okay, just wanted to mention that Doug Fir Lounge *did* actually refund the Buzz tickets. I sent them a pretty low-key e-mail on 5/5, they auto-replied the same day, then I received a follow-up e-mail on the 8th, and the money was refunded on the 13th. I can only speculate that they received a lot of correspondence regarding their original e-mail, and had a change of heart.

Normally I might have just let it slide, but I reckoned that trading the tickets' value for some other show wasn't really a viable solution, since probably 90% of other bands I go to see won't be as likely to sell out as quickly as a Buzzo or Melvins show. If the venue had offered to apply the existing tickets to a rescheduled Buzzo show in the future, that would have been fine, but for now, it does seem that no one can be sure when that will happen.

Honestly, I'm still mulling over a handful of other shows which were rescheduled from March to October; wondering if I should have just asked for a refund for those as well. Maybe they'll happen, but if they do, that's gonna end up being a busy month!

Yeah, I was just about to post something here about that. Not surprised to hear the show was cancelled, but so were a number of other shows I had tickets to, and all of them were more than willing to honor the purchased tickets at a later date, or a refund. I'll drop a line to Doug Fir about this, but seriously, they're obviously not taking the "we're all in this together" idea very seriously, it seems. The way it's been presented, it appears that they plan to keep the money one way or another, even if it's not going toward what we paid for.

Also posted in the Minor Complaints thread:

I just got an email that the Portland King Buzzo show is officially cancelled.  Pretty much knew that was coming but my complaint is that the only options for ticket holders are a ticket voucher for a future show at 120% of the value of your ticket(s) OR a gift certificate to their restaurant/bar at 120% of ticket value.  No option for refund even though it's officially cancelled and you have to let them know your decision within 30 days

Hey there - I thought I might have posted something about this show somewhere on the board before, but I'm not finding it now. KRK was kind of locked into his position filming that one, because he was also holding down the stage right monitor wedge. "Stage" being a small flat riser not much taller than a pallet, set in the middle of Capital Lake Park. I was documenting a bunch of the bands playing IPU on a small stereo walkman strapped over my shoulder, and captured the Melvins set while holding down the stage left monitor. I've got some photos from the set, and one in particular kind of sums up the Melvins set for me; showing an elderly fellow in the background casting a curious look at the noise that was just starting to take over the tranquility of the park. As memory serves, that fellow had been enjoying a leisurely stroll. but the impending thunder from the Melvins encouraged him to pick up the pace and get the heck out of there. Prior to the set, a few of us had been lucky enough to score some homemade cookies from Buzz's mom, backstage at the van. Good times!

Ah, thanks for that. I don't step in the facebooks or instagrams or anything else that looks like something you wouldn't want to step in, so I reckon I miss the occasional doubloon that might actually be worth something. Usually it's a fair trade (meaning usually I'm not really missing all that much); once in a blue moon I guess something like these limited releases get past me. Oh well. I've been known to pay a little extra for a good time, but then I guess I do expect to have a really good time, y'know?

Ah yes, this is the analogy I was looking for.... describes Record Store Day to a T, along with all the other labels, etc, who take music fans for easy marks...

Alive At The Fucker Club - Haze edition.  Heard it might be a little more spendy than 6 pack but it's to slightly compensate for the band not being able to tour.  Supposed to be regular factory run later at more normal price.  Really want one but I've spent way too much lately on vinyl.  We'll see how I'm feeling Sunday morning....

Yes, I had to go across the pond this time, but Ipecac is still selling the Hot Pink version of Gift of Sacrifice.

A bit more in postage, but at least it doesn't go to some flipper in the US!

At least sometime this year, it appears I'll have a tasty pink slab of new Buzzo to lay on my turntable!

Pink?

Oh, when you put it that way, I am filled with confidence.....  :?

He didn't send me the memo about this release, though, so now I'll just do the usual thing of supporting some flipper, I reckon....

Thanks for posting that! I was surprised to discover that once again I had been out of the loop for this record as well as the "Six Pack" release. Considering how many mailing lists I'm subscribed to, I'd think I would know when literally any artist on the planet is even thinking about recording new material, much less releasing a new record, but maybe this whole internet thing will improve over time....   At least sometime this year, it appears I'll have a tasty pink slab of new Buzzo to lay on my turntable!

Yep, it is, but I think the seller might be a bit of a flake.

A week ago, I made them an offer, and they turned it down, saying they had already turned down another offer, and they were sure they could get a lot of money for the shirt.

Tonight I got a notice saying it sold for a bid that was less than what I had offered a week earlier.

Hmph.

Hey, thanks a heap for posting that!
We're pretty disconnected from all those antisocial media tools, so by the time I caught wind that this was happening, we had out of town guests, and we all collectively cried in our many beers, despondent by the knowledge that we would not be drooling over potential new art for all of our walls.

Yeah, what he said....

I missed the memo on this , so everything is sold out except XXL. Whinge, whine, waaaahhhh, etc.

That said, what's the sizing like for these things?

Some years ago I bought a Ramones sweater that claimed to be XL, but in real life seems to be more of a minus Small or something, and has been sitting unworn ever since. So maybe an XXL might almost fit? Seems that most of these these places haven't figured out that a size chart is a good thing.
