H.A.T. Singles
« on: October 27, 2009, 10:29:06 PM »
So after years of basically just being too lazy to hunt these down after being too lazy to buy them up front when they were new, I finally bought them all recently.  So far I've received all of them but The Anti-Vermin Seed, and I've noticed a few things that seem odd.  Half of them are 33 1/3 and half of them are 45.  I'm guessing that's because some of the longer songs won't fit on the record at 45 rpms, but then why not just make them all 33s?  The other anomaly is on The Brain Center single, the sleeve of which seems to be printed backwards.  Where all the other sleeves are a hair taller on the front than the back, that one is taller on the back than the front.  Anyone else's like this?  I'm guessing that the Anti-Vermin single will have to be a 33, and even then I don't think it fits.  The B-sides are all really cool, but I kind of just wish they'd put out a regular old LP of H.A.T., being as it's the best album of the decade and all...

Mine are like that, too. 45-rpm sounds a lot better than 33.3; 45-rpm 12" singles sound the best don't you think? Some of the HAT singles should've been made to play at 78-rpm and 16-rpm, too, in my opinion. (I used to have an old record player with a 16-rpm option. Made everything sound like Thrones!)

That's how Cobain wrote 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.
He listened to Boston's 'More Than a Feeling' on
the wrong speed.

HAT singles rule.

Their cover of the Ramones "Today The World, Tommorow Your Love" is amazing.

I'm not so sure that that isn't what's going on with Foaming on the B-side of Black Stooges.  It's way too fast at 33, but I don't have a turntable that'll do 16.  I can play 78s though and have quite a few old swing era 78s that are crazy.  My guess is that 16rpm would put that Foaming at the right speed.  It's pitched higher than if you take the regular Foaming single and play it at 45rpm, which leads me to believe it's somewhere around double speed.

I'm guessing that's because some of the longer songs won't fit on the record at 45 rpms, but then why not just make them all 33s?

Because.

yeah, the B-sides are pretty good. I have mp3s of them and somebody's turntable was at the wrong speed when they made the mp3s... (unrelated to the nirvana post which i believe is bullshit. but i believe kurt said it.)

the vocals on 'foaming (faster version)' are different, and are the correct speed/pitch- just the music is faster/sped up...

and yes, anti-vermin is spread across both sides of that 7", but it's still an edited version.
take care,
