Need help determining the legitimacy of this 7"
« on: June 28, 2012, 10:25:40 AM »
So I was going through some old 7" records today and I came across a few Melvins items, including the Melvins/Malfunkshun split. Looking up online to see if it had any value, I noticed that all of the copies I found had a color sleeve. Mine has a black and white sleeve, is numbered 40/100, and is on red vinyl. I attached some photos. Is this a fake? I bought it ages ago at a great record shop. Any help would be appreciated!

Really, thecrybaby is the person to ask, but as far as I know there were at least three different colours of sleeve, and red and black wax, depending on the pressing. Thecrybaby has millions of variants!

This might help a little:

I checked out that list earlier, and it says that the red vinyl only comes in colored sleeves. That's why I'm questioning its authenticity. Where do I find this Crybaby you speak of?

Find the "Post Your Collection" thread, look at his posts and then hang your head in sadness and jealousy.

as far as i know it's a legit one. there were different covers for the red vinyl.
see the link jules posted above.

since it is not on a proper label I would generally say that all 3(?) versions (black vinyl, coke box and red vinyl) are bootlegs. discogs lists them as unofficial.

I wouldn't say they're bootlegs in the conventional sense of the word. I think this was released by Malfunkshun the band in cahoots with the Melvins Fan Club at the time, so I guess it was produced with the knowledge and permission of both bands.

I'd actually like a white sleeve version of this. Even if someone has photocopied it, at least it's different!

i have 2 different versions:
blue paper and red paper. the blue versions i have are numbered 80 and 91, the red versions i have are numbered 10 and 16.
i have never seen a white cover before but for me they are looking if they are original as the handwritting of the numbers looks the same as at mine copies...

Buddy, you're right! I'm reading some old official merch lists and the Malfunkshun box is indeed listed as a bootleg. Apologies.

I've never seen that old merch list before - is that from one of the fan club newsletters?  Is the whole thing available somehwere?
