The first new Melvins album you purchased
« on: June 15, 2018, 03:34:20 PM »
Since not everyone here became a fan of the band when they first started out, im curious - what was the first NEW Melvins album you brought as a fan that had only just been released?

Mine was 'Houdini Live' in 2006.

It was exciting to experience a new Melvins album for the first time for me. Little did i know that a mere 5 months later (A)SA would be released too!

Houdini on cd right around the time it came out in 93.  I had already worn out the cassette dubs of Ozma and Bullhead that friends had made for me.  Soon after I got Ozma/GPT on cd and then just started hunting the rest down.

I guess technically The Maggot since everything else I'd bought secondhand or through CD clubs after the initial release

HAT.

I didn't know what to think at the time but liked it. The pink album art suits that album to a tee

Fuck, I can't remember... apparently, according to my photo albums it was Houdini Live, the only thing I do remember is that the first Melvins album I bought was Houdini back in the year 2000.

This is actually a funny story, and true.

KGRG is the Green River Community College radio station. They played "Mean Time" by
Helmet, and I thought they identified the artist as the Melvins. My brother had an interest in the Melvins and turned me on to the band at a RCKCNDY (this may be the venue) show during a visit. Between the Rocket and the Seattle Weekly the date was misidentified, so we stood around thumbing our bags and obviously there was no Melvins show that night.

So the store in Kent was called Bubbles. I think I bought Crybaby first. Then I was desperate, trying to find "Mean Time" on a Melvins record. Maggot, Lysol, Bullhead, Stoner Witch, Honky, Stag. No "In The Meantime", but I was hooked on the Melvins forever.

Buzz got right in front of me at a San Diego show. At the Casbah the stage is only about three feet high. I got too close in the crowd surge, and got kicked out. I always wonder what would have happened if I had touched his guitar and he stopped the show. I'd be an enemy of the band probably.

Anyway...

I think Crybaby is the answer because of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" if I bought the wrong album at least I had a song I knew.

I got into the Melvins around the time when Freak Puke was announced.
I started listening from Bullhead and Lysol, then Atlantic, then Trilogy,
but the first CDs I bought were Freak Puke and The Bride Screamed Murder in 2013.
I still think people underestimate Bride.
