It's some sort of digital mixer put out by Roland that allows you to sample in real time and manipulate beats, sounds, guitars, vocals etc etc, or create your own through a bank of pre-set sounds, beats, loops and rhythms.

sonic youth have messed around with one, and of course the new improved versions on electroretard were done on the Roland Micro Series 2000, other people like Peaches and hip-hop heads use it too
