i just want to bump this ancient thread to show my admiration for COD ... i LOVE this album.
then again, i bought it years ago specifically because everyone said they hated it, and "it's just noise" ... naturally i needed to hear it.

the noise is perfect.  not too harsh (though harsh would be fine by me) and it's extremely well controlled.  it has room to move and breathe.  they use silence and quieter parts to make everything flow perfectly.

and the performance of "eye flys" is probably the most brutal version i've ever heard.

i wish, so much, that they'd do another record like this.

also, i'm looking for video of the show.  i already inquired in the live music section, to no avail.  but i'm hoping SOMEONE has a copy SOMEWHERE....

I'd love a video of this.  I really want to see how it was performed.  It's the album I listen to least but I know I would enjoy it visually far more.
...and they all sing the same refrain: its fun to take a trip, put acid in your veins.

The Endless Residency CD 2011 version with Jared and Cody fuckin' kills beyond belief.

You'll hear it someday and go.. oh shit...now I get it.

Bought the CD the day it came out. It was spring and I was on my way home in my car listening to this. I was confused because Colossus of Destiny to me was somehow- maybe even on this site, but somewhere online the drum thing that ended up being on HAT at the end of Black Stooges I think or one of the songs there, yeah, Black Stooges, wasn't that 'Colossus of Destiny' from show set lists back then? so I thought I was gonna hear some crazy tribal pounding drums but instead, at first I thought it 'could have been better' which now I think about it is so funny. But i also get it as an AmRep or Ipecac, I feel, made the art and experimental stuff feel normal, at home, on a Melvins album as opposed to a major where it seemed bolder and edgy. Here it was like more an in-thing as well as an in-joke? To me now Colossus of Destiny could not be any better. Especially now for me since Eye Flys opened up the Lit Lounge show so everytime I wait for the payoff and hear the end of COD I can think of the dungeon that is (was) lit that night.

This is a true Melvins album. By that I mean, not for everyone, but this is what we (Melvins) want to do. I think they were doing their version of Heathen Earth by Throbbing Gristle. It seams to be approached in much the same way they did that, and I know Buzz is a fan of that record. Their cover of Trackfive on the In Formation tribute album to T.G. is a cover of track 5 from that album (the original doesn't list track names, though most people refer to it as Dreammachine). If you do like COD, give Heathen Earth a go. It took me years to appreciate T.G. in general.

Would also love to see video of this also, but T.G. did that (Recording Heathen Earth), so maybe thats why it doesnt exist.
I heard their periods attract bears

I miss the porno track samples. And the swoops, bloops, and beeps.

I know it's been posted ad nauseum, but here's the remix I made of this phenomenal fuxing album, with prominent attention paid to Eye Flys. Engineered for 5.1.

I never found out if the band heard Chicken Swatch, our crazy attempt at a Chicken Switch album. I demand a public admonishment.

Never could really get down with COD until I got the Endless Residency set, the live version they do on there is pretty cool.

This is still growing on me, but slowly. I remember hearing this in the store... thinking it was supposed to be a new Melvins album, putting on the headphones with the electrical tape all around the mangled cord connection.

I bought something else that day instead.

I am not a big fan of improv albums. To see a live improv set might be one thing. But recordings of them are not generally enjoyable.

This however seems to be something more. I like to think of it as an hour long intro to Eye Flys. It feels like it is not "rehearsed" but that there is an established language between all the musicians. I think hearing the live version on Sugar Daddy it seems clear that this song's intro is the eternal playspace in the set list. Capturing an extended version on tape and releasing it as its own record is kind of a brilliant idea.

The result can still be aggravating or nauseating or annoying on occasion. Other times I listen or have it on in the background and really dig it.

I've always been intrigued by this album. Especially more so that surprisingly Buzz rates it so highly. I think it is one that has grown hugely in my admiration over the years (as a concept) but still one that doesn't quite sit so well with me in terms of the listening. Put it this way, i don't reach for it in my collection very much. I know we hear Buzz say "thank-you for coming" and some cheers at the beginning but i always feel that maybe this wasn't a live recording at all. Rather some kind of joke by the band.

One thing i really like about this release though, is that the song played is, in a way, the very first Melvins song 'Eye Flys' off their first record. This makes me think of COD as some kind of comment on the music scene being chaotic and of little value before the Melvins appeared. Or alternatively a sort of audio equivalent of the Melvins coming into being. The final pay off of which on this album is huge! I still wish this had been the final installment in the trilogy as originally intended.

Had a another COD listen last night. Every time i go back to this record i think i like and appreciate it more and more!! I never thought i would say that. It's a GOOD record! I'm glad it exists. I guess like any "difficult" album, it reveals itself more over time. I might listen to it again tonight! I am amazed how much sexual stuff or perhaps porn samples are in this thing. It feels like it is pretty much throughout. Sometimes obvious, sometimes stretched and made to sound like something else. I still wish this had been the 3rd release of the Trilogy instead of The Crybaby. I'm tempted to say this is a 9/10 record!!! When i first heard it i would have probably rated it a 2/10!!!
