According to Ipecac, AntAcidAudio will be releasing it, titled "The Monkees Uncle". An east coast tour would be nice too.

Dale's on guitar and singing with the rhythm section from Acid King basically on bass and drums, its slippery dirty southern style gritty rock, with weird jam improv noise parts on the solos and almost a 60s Hendrix vibe on the guitar and recording style. They had 3 CDs out on Koziks old label: Civil war fantasy' and Our Darling, both great, they also have the Acid King/Altamont debut split CD but the songs on there are noodly synth stuff..

and theyve been touring but no new CD til now

every time i listen to the altamont albums, i want to give them a fair chance and really listen, but i can't get through them...maybe i'm just not in the right mood.  the music is fine and all, it's well recorded and all that good stuff, but i just found the style of rock too generic.  not really boring, or predictable, but the sound was just not new to me.
anyone else not really a fan?  maybe for the same reasons?

Altamont puts out great records. Conda gave a perfect description of what they sound like.

I've seen Altamont 3 times and i've seen the fake Altamont once by mistake.

Altamont/Melvins show was one of the greatest concerts I have been to. Dale fronting on guitar then stripping down to play drums.

Anyone know what happened to the Porn European tour?

I'm almost positive it's the other way around. The rhythm section of Altamont played as Acid King on the two AK tracks.

Noodly synth stuff? "Wanted: Dead Or Alive" starts out weird and slow, but try listening again all the way through. There's some really rockin shit on there -(Sally Greensnake, Pluto Closes Shop). And one of the tracks(can't remember now) is sort of "the son of" Lividity from Stoner Witch.

Civil War Fantasy is the best one so far. Picked it up for $5 at the '03 Melvins/Tomahawk show!

thats why i said 'basically' - joey osbourne is currently still the drummer in both altamont and AK though. not certain about the bassist since guy pinhead left AK, but Dan Southwick is still holding down the thunder log in Altamont.

Right, it can get confusing. Their new bass player is Rafael Martinez(drummer for Black Cobra, also a six-stringer?). Damn, I really want to see Acid King hit the east coast before year's end too. Doesn't make sense that they're planning on hitting Europe first in Oct.

This is ancient melvins.net BBS GrimReaper lore:

I got all excited and made a post that Altimont was playing at the Dubliner Bar in Freemont, an area of Seattle. It's obviuosly an Irish Pub and I called to ask if Altamont with Dale Crover was playing. They are like "Yeah".

I got my recording stuff ready and drove all the way from Whidbey Is. to see them.

Right when I got there I could tell by the crowd it was not Crover's Altamont. But I stayed anyway and recorded it, got drunk, bought a c/d  for $5 just so I could send scans to Anaconda to post, which he did.
It turned out as kind of a warning.

This all led to some Irish bashing and we got in trouble with Brian. One of the "deleated" threads.

The Band billed as Altimont was actually called "the Altamont Experience".

That is the "fake" Altamont.

Got mine last night. Actually got to see Altamont perform it live before hearing the disc! Anyway, I think it's great. Toshi is a nice addition, and the artwork by Mackie is sweet. This is probably their best release yet, although I really like much of their past work too. This seems a lot more polished. Is there anything Crover can't do? Damn.

this disc is OLD SCHOOL as shit.    joe speaks truth.   although I WILL say I am a bit more partial to OUR DARLING.   no taking anything away from it though.
I also got BB "head for shallow" in the same order.
isn't it fucked up how you can go for 3 months burned out on all your discs with nothing to listen to, then all of a sudden you got 3 or 4 things and you can't listen to the new shit fast enough?   feast or famine.

BIG BUSINESS is working for me.  this disc DOES NOT let up.  I am impressed with Cody (cody?) on drums.  makes me look forward to the collab.   thanks for the tip conda.

Yeah, this disc owns. Dale brings the rock. Dave Grohl wishes he rocked like this. Nice Mackie artwork as always. The track "El Stupido" is the weirdest, sounds similar to QOTSA's "No One Knows", could be a joke on that tune. "In A Better World" is a Screamers cover. Really digging this, but I think "Civil War Fantasy" is still my favorite.

If I recall correctly, there is a song on this album that does have a QOTSA feel to it.
Title: Re: the monkee's uncle
Post by: glen on November 07, 2005, 09:54:05 AM
yeah, I believe that is EL STUPIDO.  although I have never heard anything from QOTSA besides radio shit. I do recall that it sounds like that "no one knows" song.  kinda bouncy.

DUM DUM FEVER is just down right nasty.         alot of references to being stupid on this disc.
dum dum fever, el stupido, plus I believe dale's lyrics reference ignorance a couple more times.

I dig how dale does his own thing.  he doesn't try to be terribly heavy or riffy. it's just rock the way HE likes it.  in classic MELVINS fashion, catering to NO ONE.

"No one knows"  is a ripped off Canned Heat song.

My father recently told me that Blue Cheers has sampled an old blues song in Parchment Farm (sp?) titled Doo Wah Diddy or something when I was playing Vincebus Eruptum. He meant the heavy part that the Melvins have also jammed several times at live shows. I downloaded two versions of the song by both Howlin' Wolf and Clapton but I couldn't hear it that obvious. When I heard a version of Doo Wah Diddy by an old Dutch blues band called Living Blues, it sounded exactly like it, the Melvins just play it heavier. So actually the Melvins never covered Parchment Farm but Doo Wah Diddy, they just the interpretation by Blue Cheer.

looks like we got us a "rip-off"  daisy chain. (ouch!)

actually, I refuse to accept or believe dale would rip-off anyone or any song.  I just think it's a relatively common and catchy riff.   there is no way I am thinking that dale listened to QOTSA and said "yeah, I'm going to write a song just like that".  besides dale has GOT IT ALL OVER QOTSA. with or without MELVINS.

and recess........  what?  you totally lost me on that one. who did WHAT now with WHO's song?

The Melvins have covered Parchment Farm by Blue Cheer, a track off their classic Vincebus Eruptum. There's a heavy part in this song, which is actually an old blues song, titled Doo Wah Diddy. When the Melvins jammed Parchment Farm, they only played the heavy part (AFAIK) so therefore they actually covered Doo Wah Diddy. I will upload the Living Blues version of Doo Wah Diddy tonight so you all can see for yourself.

Don't you mean Diddy Wah Diddy by Bo Diddley? Do Wah Diddy isn't exactly an old blues song.
But i don't think either of them sound like Parchment Farm, well maybe the riff is a little bit similar.

Shit, I fucked up terribly. So here I go one more time, please forget everything I said earlier.

The heavy part in Parchment Farm by Blue Cheer, sounds like the song Doo Wah Diddy Wang Dang Doodle. I heard Bo Diddley Howlin' Wolf version of this song but that version doesn't sound as obvious as the heavy part as the Livin' Blues version, check it out right here:

http://mwierda.com/tmp/Livin'%20Blues%20-%20Wang%20Dang%20Doodle.mp3.

It seems that Willie Dixon is the original performer and Blue Cheer somehow stuffed it into Parchment Farm, which is also a cover IIRC. Shit, I should really hear the original of Parchment Farm first before I claim the Blue Cheers version consists a sample from Wang Dang Doodle.

The "Rattlesnake Shake" Altamont track is on a compilation CD called "In The Groove" on Magna Cartel? records. I got it a few months ago on half.com for 3 or 4 bucks. Besides that the other reason to buy it is for the only officially released Bakerton Group track. Bakerton Group is instrumental Clutch. There's the Acid King 'Motorhead" cover too, but that's already on the Busse Woods reiussue. The other bands on "In The Groove" are decent, some not so good. Definitely worth getting used. So is the Aerosmith tribute CD "Right In The Nuts". Altamont does "Make It" on there, and the best one on there is the Men Of Porn cover of "Lightning Strikes".

To all others, about El Stupido: I didn't mean to say Dale ripped off No One Knows. Maybe he just thinks the riff is stupid and catchy and wanted to fuck with it to make his own song out of it. I don't know about Queens anymore. The new studio album is decent, but I previewed the new DVD, and god do the old songs sound awful without Nick. Totally ball-less.

Yeah, I've only heard "Drug Problem" and I like it, totally different thing than Queens. Maybe it's just me right now, but from what I've seen recently of them doing the old tunes, there's the rawness missing. I'd still pay to see them in my town, but not worth travelling for or paying to see open for shitty NIN. Saw Queens in '03 and it was awesome. Going to see MG/Dwarves in a few days to see and hear what Nick's up to now.

you may want to make sure that show is still on, because my understanding is that MG/Nick pulled off the tour because Blag and Nick got into it.

From Nick's website:

Sorry to inform everyone who hasn't found out already in another way, but Nick is no longer on tour with the Dwarves.

(he got kicked off the tour after he cut Blag's scrotum with a broken glass when they were
both rolling around on the floor fighting over the last  crack rock)

listened to the album twice now and I'm thinking dale's accomplished something on this one that he couldn't reach with the other two earlier discs.    by far , this one's easily the best.  I was hesitant at first even giving it a try because I never foud the first two very appealing (especially the last one), I'm glad I did.  Great album, he took some good chances along the melvins realm.  I'd really like to check them out live, that's if they ever came through the midwest.

They are simply amazing. Dale has definitely reached a new level outside of the Melvins. He's just a damn good musician, very well rounded and versatile.

I'll admit it, I fucking love Dale too! Ever since the solo EP, he is an
entity outside of his long term partnership with Buzz in the melvs.
His words and guitar playing are equal to Buzzs in my opinion.
Based on artistic merit, coolness and not purely technical aspects.

Yeah, you talk to him and he's real mellow, kind of quiet, and an all around nice guy. Then, he picks up any instrument and just kills. I think that he really takes his music business seriously. I think it's a combination of talent, dedication, experience, and just working your ass off.

great fuckin' album.
just got it.
this is my first buy of altamont's.
i love the ending weird distorted rhythm solo (i know shit about guitars and their electronics) at the end of bathroom creep.
and i can't get pedigree out of my head.
there's no fighting dale's creativity, uniqueness, and great musical abilities.
very talented and sweet guy.

With another drummer in the band, maybe Dale will strap on a guitar for the melvins a little bit....

Actually Tres Cabrones turned out pretty damned well with Dale on bass.
