On a side note i wish this was under the Melvins banner as generally im not a fan of short lived side projects. Crystal Fairy??? What a terrible band name. Odd that 'Hold It In' or 'Three Men And A Baby' were also collaborations but still credited as "Melvins" whereas this is considered separate from that. I think it will be interesting to see if now Buzz has worked with Omar, if a load of people from here all of a sudden are going to be big Omar fans. Which kind of happened with Le Butcherettes. Almost no one here cared about the band until they got the Melvins seal of approval.

I respect Omar as a guitarist and producer. I just don't care much for his actual music. I would bet that this project will be great.
I checked out a few Mars Volta albums around a decade ago. They were OK, but IMO way overrated. I saw Antemasque 2 yrs ago, with Le Butcherettes opening. Antemasque was much more listenable than MV, but still didn't really stand out to me. It's mainly the vocals that lose me.
Song is great. Teri sounds great. Its got ballz! Win!

I dare say the reasons this collab isn't under the Melvins name are a) control, if it's under the Melvins name Buzz & Dale dictate terms not sure a guy like Omar would go for that and b) a lot larger potential exposure of Crystal Fairy taking off then it otherwise would under the Melvins name.
They said they've been working on it a while so hopefully for all of them the background checks have been done lol I know next to nothing about Teri but those two main At The Drive In/The Mars Volta guys seem like huge flakes. I could see Buzz giving an opinion on something Omar doesn't like and he immediately quitting refusing to ever speak to Buzz again or something like that.

After reading Ian's post the project doesn't seem all that shocking but a bit sugarcoated to make it seem like a huge deal. Teri and Omar have had a good working relationship for nearly ten years and there's also the Ipecac connection all four musicians share now. Maybe John Frusciante for a guest spot? :lol:
I'm sure this album will be great but I'm curious to see what follows of it in the next few years. I'm sure a tour or two will be a given next year in support of the record but then where does it go from there? A One-off like any Les Claypool side project or does all four parties keep it going strong for the years to come?
In closing there's a few musicians who would have been legit shocking to casual and die-hard fans, like Claypool or that Grohl guy who's also in a bunch of bands.

This has been a long time coming for me. Been 16 years since the track with Bliss Blood. In the meantime, they've had 2 albums where they let weirdos jack their sound for the entire record (POTRE, Hold It In). Time for a whole album of female vox. Or maybe they switch it around, I don't know.

I watched that Omar music video that had Buzz, john Frusciante, and the gender bender punching him in the face, and my first thought was "hey, welcome to six degrees of Mike Patton and Anthony Kiedis collaborations."
I saw the Mars Volta a decade or so ago and it bored me to tears. My friends that I grew up with that were into At the Drive In were the same people that thought Californication was the best album of all time. (Needless to say, as we've grown up, I hate these people now. Who woulda thunk that they would have become judgemental tasteless assholes?)
That said, I like this song. Teri's vocals are superb. Still, I can't help but feel reluctant. And I'm really curious about Omar's random relationship with all things Ipecac.
The Mars Volta cop a bit of shit some of it certainly justified and although I never cared for ATDI these two TMV songs are the tits.

I really didn't know what to expect from the artwork, but i certainly didn't expect that cover! Teri the cover star as it were!! I wonder if Mackie worked on it or composed it at all? Can't wait to hear the full record. Goodness Teri is so beautiful! Surprising that the album is released on the 24th - 3 days after the tour starts!

Altough this Crystal Fairy record only has 2 songs, it is a 12'' record. The Clown Tributes were 7'' so it makes sense this one is more expensive.

I can't see Buzz and Dale as too concerned really. I imagine if that did happen, that they wouldn't see it as affecting them - they'ed just move on and carry on in Melvins. No biggie to them, kind of thing.
Got word via a few posts in a Melvins group that the Constellation Room and Troubadour dates are canceled.

That'd be a rather bizarre thing to be mysterious about but if they bailed over that it wouldn't look good on them. If Crystal Fairy gets dropped from Psycho Las Vegas something is really wrong.

It might not have been public knowledge they were married but it was public knowledge they were in a relationship so I doubt that would make much difference.
marriage records are not top secret.

'posesión' could mean that Teri sings this one in spanish...
The song sung in Spainish is Secret Agent Rat (God, I live that title!). Possession is basically a Teri/Buzz duet and one of the best songs on the album imho.

Regardless of how you feel of this read they're right on the money about Chickenfoot and Superheavy being dogshit.

I'll be interested to hear what fans who already like Teri's other acts think about this. So far i've only listened through the record once but it didn't really strike me too much. I know the band see this as a different entity but i have to say i still think of it as a "Melvins album". I think even what Dale mentions above doesn't rule it out. I mean when you think of The Crybaby, Chicken Switch, Hold It In or even Everybody Loves Sausages those records all in one way or another blur the lines that Dale outlines above there.
Personally I don't think this Crystal Fairy album sounds much like the Melvins at all.

Oh it does for me. Very much so. Some songs or moments don't really come across as a Melvins track, 'Under Trouble' for example, but then lately Melvins albums have had a few surprise odd songs on there. So that just fits into that for me.
BTW, i have to say that i think 'Posesion' is the worst song on here and it's a cover!
been listening to this a couple of times. it grew up a little bit after second listen. some good moments by Buzz and Dale. still think there's too much Teri in the mix, considering also she doesn't stop a moment singing. not the best thing i heard involving Buzz and Dale but a decent straight rock album and i can see them being excited collaborating with a true frontwoman

I think i'd go with an 8/10. Im tempted to say it's better than Basses Loaded, certainly in terms of consistency anyway but perhaps overall with all things considered it's about the same. It's something of a "grower" this album, but i still think Under Trouble, Posesion and Sweet Self are the lesser points on the record. Not bad but just not so great to me. Does anyone else cringe at that bit in the title track where Teri says "Hey yo, Crystal do you want a cigarette?". ?? That little bit irritates me so much. Perhaps in the way she says it too.

It's the most 90s thing about this record, honestly. Reminded me of Pixies, Lydia Lunch and Sleater-Kinney.
Overall it's a 7/10 record for me. Way too arty to be grunge but it's not bad even if some of the songs are as straightforward alternative rock as it gets. Honestly, it's a great vocal/lyric clinic for Teri with her at times overshadowing the backing players through Dale kills it on Crystal Fairy and a few others and of course Buzz is a riff factory. Omar as a bassist is fine but we all know his forte is his guitar and a thousand pedals. Some of the songs don't do much for me either.
I like it but I'm not sure if I'll be revisiting this album a lot and I got a sinking feeling this may be the only album we get of this group. I told a friend Omar was playing bass on it and he already doesn't want to hear it (He's a fickle individual in terms of music and a diehard Volta fan).
Highlights? Chiseler, Crystal Fairy, Under Trouble, Bent Teeth, Posesion
Probably not much chance for Crystal Fairy touring happening this year now with At The Drive-In's comeback album coming out on the 5th May.

I listened to the album in it's entirety last night. Took a few bong hits and dived in. I think this is easily the best HARD ROCK album to come out in at least a decade. Seriously. This album melted my face off. So much ROCK ROCK ROCK ROCK.
As with the Le Butcherettes catalog, I think these songs are due to get better after seeing them performed live.
Best song on this album?? Easy, it's 'Secret Agent Rat' all day for me! Awesome Buzzo riff alert! I wonder what Teri is singing about in that one. Anyone know any Spanish?

With that being said, her spanish reminds me a lot of Cedric's, a very poor one (obviously on purpose) with tons of grammatical errors and misspellings and most of the time what they say simply makes no sense... unless you take the lyrics as pure poetry. Here's my review. Honestly, the more I listen to it, the more I like it. though, with the tour cancellation, I wonder if this project will be a non-starter. Were there any live Crystal fairy shows at all? Was anyone there?

No shows took place, but it was only a 5 date west coast mini tour. The Melvins don't tour in the dead of winter, but the rest of the year is open (after the Redd Kross/ LB/ATDI stuff this spring).

And by that I don't mean that the Melvins set an unreachable bar, because I did try and keep an open mind and listen to this as a new band. It's my own fault that I read and watch interviews but for people that constantly talk about how ahead of the curve and weird they are, this is awfully derivative and not at all challenging. Teri seems to be perfectly content sounding like a second rate PJ Harvey and Omar's nondescript bass lines might as well have been overdubbed by Dale. Not that it matters, but even the name stinks.
Now some of you might scoff and call me a hater which is fine. But this is a forum, it's not like I'm waiting outside the venue after a show to tell them what I think about their work. Some of my lifelong heroes have dropped stinkers and I still love them all the same.

good stuff. I agree with most everything you expressed. The only WILD CARD is the LIVE SHOW.
The chick is crazy fun to watch and I imagine the songs have more POP live.

I listened Monday when the dl came in and I loved it. Is it a Melvins Album? No. Is it about 95% better than the last Le Butcherettes album from the standpoint of a Melvins fan? Fuck yeah!

In a way, no. No Country, no experimental Patton/Yow stuff, no Nirvana cover, no long twisty songs that aren't quite Roman Dog Bird/Hung Bunny type stuff. The music is pretty much Melvins. The vocals aren't.
I think this is less a Melvins album (Buzz write 99% of that material and sings all over it) whereas this is more a Crystal Fairys album (multiple writers, different singer, and a different sound).
But then, I also think Hold It In is less of a Melvins album and more of a Melvins / Butthole Surfers album.
It is sooooo confusing anymore! hahahhaa!!!
Anyway - I think this album straight up rocks. And Teri seems a LOT less PJ than in the Le Butercherette songs that I have heard. Still some PJ in there but it doesn't feel like a rip off.

Stoner Witch took a lot of time to be recorded but you can hear more stuff and ideas on that album than on four/ five latest Melvins releases.the more time you spend in the studio the more quality you get.especially when you speak of super talented musicians like Buzz or Dale.just my opinion

Hmm im not sure myself. I think of course it depends on the type of music people record i guess. I have no experience of it myself but i think i do tend to agree with Buzz here that keeping things quick and to the point keeps it fresh and vital. I think you can actually hear that in a song or an album. When alternatively sometimes things can easily get bogged down over thinking things or adding layers. But yes i agree that if it's a great musician they probably bypass a lot of that to an extent.

Aaaaah... but if I may counter- Pigs of the Roman Empire was a double and I think it definitely NEEDED to be a double Lp. a single disc just wouldn't have made the same impact and artistic statement.

On topic of Crystal Fairy after one week of hearing: I like it a lot. Moth Tongue is my fave tune currently.
I think some of you are too hypercritical of this project. Of course it's going to sound a little more conventional than a standard Melvins album, the music was made to fit Teri's style. It's not reinventing the wheel, it's rock 'n' roll bottom line. The singing is great, the drummer kills, the riffs are awesome, and the bass player holds it down well. 8) Bottom line, I don't understand how you could not love this album if you're a Melvins and/or Le Butcherettes fan.

I'm envisioning some acoustic numbers, some noise songs, some thrash, some lumbering, heavy stuff, some electronic, etc. WIth Buzz's deep love for classic rock and what a double album stands for in that genre, it will likely include all the things that they've tried in the past, rolled into one album. In my opinion, Stag did a great job of blending all those styles together. That will be a tough one to top.

I like this song a lot. The first 3 minutes remind me of something you would hear on
the Bootlicker. This is one of the few songs in the last 10 years, where the Melvins have actually tried some new sounds. The next six minutes are standard fare. Buzz noodling, etc. Then we have some ambient soundscapes and some chopped up vocals which have been appearing a lot lately at the end of tracks.
Hey! To each their own. I think if you really like what the Melvins do, you would be able to appreciate Tommy Goes Berserk, I've certainly heard worse Melvins songs.

I find a lot of the latest Melvins output to be along similarly generic lines, to be honest.
Doesn't mean it's trash, just nothing to write home about.

I'm with Chief & Sadcorps- this is a real keeper. I must admit I had reservations, but they were blown away by a powerful, well written and performed gem of an album.

Seems like this new project has gone under the radar for the record store and chains here in Norway, no one had ever heard of Crystal Fairy. Melvins all know about, but they didn`t know this was the bands new project, so I had no luck on my purchase hunt saturday. So now I will have to use Amazon.
Hard rock has always been the most lame labels on music ever. Makes you think about Krokus, Def Leppard, Ratt etc, classic hard rock from the eighties.

I will take that - at this point we are just splitting hairs. I think of Hard Rock and Glam Rock as two separate genres, both related to Metal but neither are hard enough to be metal.
I wouldn't call Crystal Fairy a Metal album.

I agree with all that those glam rock bands were hard rock back then but now I would consider them glam rock/hair metal and Crystal Fairy is a definite hard rock album, straight ahead rock is shit like Nickelback and whatever and CF are heavier than that but certainly not metal.
This is all on my mind at the moment because my younger brother has moved house and dumped all his CD's in my mother's garage and wants to sell them all for $1 each and going through them tonight it's full of stuff like Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, Judas Priest, Tim Ripper Owens every bloody album Devin Townsend has ever released Meshuggah too. It's depressing but at least he grew out of all the nu-metal stuff like Korn & Limp Bizkit.
Only one Melvins album in there and a best of album at that.

When this album was released i read a comment on The Mars Volta forum from someone who said 6 months down the line this record would be forgotten. At the time i didn't agree but now upon reflection that summation seems to be exactly the case. I wouldn't like to place a bet upon the possibility of a future Crystal Fairy show or tour. It does seem like this is over before it even got started.
this record absolutely smokes and it's a good indicator exactly how lame the fan base is that no one is talking about it. :D
Is it just me or Buzz is not happy to get questions about CF in interviews? i noticed that many times in recent interviews.i think a hard working,super professional guy like Buzz is still pissed to have his schedule ruined. i suspect Crystal Fairy is a dead project

It is a GREAT record!! Teri's vocals sync perfectly with the band and she's really capable of delivering a wide range of vocal styles. I've said it before but I never knew she was a 1974 Geddy Lee impersonator :-k
Omar is no slouch either...sounds great with the fellas! I really want to see them live, hope it still happens...
Took me a while to listen to it multiple times as I got it on vinyl, spun it once and then spent the next couple of weeks trying to get a decent sounding digital copy. The mp3 that was delivered with the vinyl was unlistenable, something really off in the high range... finally got a flac copy which sounded better.

Yeah, I would suspect he's probably a little pissed it didn't happen. Apparently Buzz wanted to put a week or two into rehearsing for a tour which totally makes sense, and Omar wanted none of that. Must have got in the way of ATDI tour preparations or something on his end. I'd guess as long as Teri's married to him, things will be at a standstill, which is really too bad. Omar is totally replaceable in CF. Get Dunn, Rutmanis, Pinkus or whoever from Melvins side, and the band would be even better.

This. Plus if it's true they're married I can't see Teri touring without Omar in the case of that band. Then again I'm sure you can go back a few pages here and there's a comment or two on Omar being sketchy or flaky.

Yeah, he certainly had a better offer with ATD. But I doubt Buzz would care what the reason was more than he would care that it fucked with his plans. I would love to see more Crystal Fairy - I loved loved loved that album.
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's body of work, on Ipecac, made me realize this guy probably did the Crystal Fairy album because his wife talked him into it. We'll never know the inter-workings of the band's relationships. We do have a great album to enjoy.
At this point, I'd like to see Crytal Fairy to be classified as a Melvins release, with it's proper place in themelvins.net discography. O:)

I don't think that is quite the case but i certainly think there is an element of this being just another project to work on for Omar. The guy is super prolific and probably just completes one thing so he can get to the next.

I used to think this way too. I wanted it to be considered "Melvins" but taking another listen recently, it really is it's own thing. It's probably better that way too.
