alright. i'm finally re-posting about this. i have been totally out of sorts these past 12 hours.

some are curious, so i'll explain: my roommate and his (our) friend are on the exec. board at our college radio station, WRUV. basically this means all they have to do is have a show once a week and go to meetings sometimes, and then reap incredible rewards. our mutal friend emailed tim (not moss), their promoter about getting on the guest list because of the radio station. that's all she wrote. he writes back a few days later (yesterday) with: "you are on the guest list and i have set up an interview. be there at 6pm and ask for tim moss".
!! it was out of nowhere! it was entirely his suggestion. confusing. maybe someone here knows more about promoting than i do. why would this guy suggest an interview with a radio station in northern vermont? they are considered a "core station" so i guess that means something... to fully honor the band i am going to video tape it, transcribe it, and try to get it out as much as possible. i'll send the transcript to the school newspaper, my website, and any others that'll take it, and send the video to our TV channel.
i've got a barrage of questions worked out, and i plan to take some time towards the end to present myself as a sort of ambassador to the melvins-fan community. i'll ask him if there is anything he would like to say or ask to the largest group of his fans concentrated in one place.
my mind is wholly blown. i haven't been able to think straight. i've got a math exam in a half hour and there is a good chance i am going to be taking the derviative of f ' (MELVINS) and scribbling questions to remember to ask all over the paper.
i do plan to ask questions about the board. like what they know about it and if they ever go on it. it sounds goofy, but this really is an important place. it is home to scores and scores of their fans, and that's not something to scoff at.
i don't think they've ever been interviewed by a fan-boy such as myself. it should be quite an experience for them, that is if i can attempt some sort of communication through stutters and constant explosive shitting.
and of course, i am going to bring cracker barrel cheese....... :o :shock:
tomorrow i will try to post as much as i can about the night, including pictures, and i will get the video and transcript up as quick as possible also. my sisters are visiting this weekend and i have a lot of work to do, but i'll try my best.

If I had a quid for every time when I was in my young teens I got told "...well they weren't as good as when I saw em in 86 with Voivod at the Marquee - christ, that was a hell of a show. Well, obviously nowadays is nowhere NEAR as good as the scene in the 80s bla bla bla bla bla....." by drunken 35-year old metalheads I'd have enough money to buy at least their Reign In Blood 12". But then, the regular metal scene is way more closed-minded than any textbook 'Melvins fanbase' (if such a group could be defined).
Younger people talking to older people is how great music gets passed on. When I was younger, I was very self-conscious about my age (I was almost a full decade younger than most of the people I used to get musical suggestions from) and I think I was looked down upon by a few of them. However, nowadays all they do is work and drink, they have absolutely no attachment to anything recent or developing in the world of music, and they're just those people that you occasionally see standing at the bar gruffly, wondering why it just doesn't feel the same as it did fifteen years ago.
Young people who are genuine music fans have more enthusiasm towards finding new music than, say, your average gig-going 25-year-old.
It's especially good that you (Lividity) are into The Melvins 'cos it seems like they're more a 'band's band' than a 'punter's band' (I'm not sure if you have the slang word 'punter' in the US - it sort of means 'average Mr. Joe Consumer'). I see way more
bands namecheck them than punters. This was how I got into Neurosis too - so many interviews have some mention of The Melvins or Neurosis or Swans or something like that, but I ask so many people if they're into any of those bands and an uninterested face is their reply.
When and how did you get into The Melvins? I'm curious as to how a 13-year-old has any sort of gateway, unless you have an older sibling or something...?
It's not that rare, I got into the Melvins as a 15 yr old when my older
brother (18 at the time) gave me his copy of Bullhead on cassette!
Still grooving to them 12 years later.
The "Come As You Are" book. I read the book and they kept saying the Melvins were great, and they sounded crazy from their descriptions, which I liked. So I punched up "The Melvins" on Amazon.com and checked out the samples. The first one I heard was "At The Stake" and I was totally blown away. So I asked my mom for Stoner Witch. I got Houdini instead since they didn't have SW, but it was excellent nonetheless.
And thanks for the compliment on my typing. I do that mostly because it's way easier to read, unlike the AIM profiles that have "OMGgg MIA B-daizz cominn in TO Daizzz lol!!!!!". Man, I hate that crap.
when I was 14 I listened to the Rolling Stones and the sex pistols.
I got into the melvins through Nirvana, Im not ashamed of that. I dont have an older brother or anything so its great when bands you like namechecks other good bands.

me and my two good friends all got into the Melvins around 13/14.We all started playing instruments a year earlier..my friend Alex got OZMA, and it went downhill from there...i think i picked up Bullhead and Lysol and we were hooked...

I'm not getting pushy or anything but I think this board is HURTING for Vin's interview. things are in a bit of a rut, I've seen 2 "what's your favorite MELVINS songs?" in less than a month. that tells me we need some fresh subject matter.

i know i have to do this damn thing. i think about it all the time.

this last week i was home for thanksgiving and couldn't work on it. i would do it myself at home but i don't think i have the ability to connect VCR --> computer. i've only connected video devices through firewire and i doubt that's a viable option for VHS. i need to take my ass to the library for a few hours and bust it out. i should do it before finals, too, because if i don't i'll wind up going home for christmas break and then you won't see it till february.
i guess you can consider that a guarantee that it'll be complete by december 15th, hopefully much before.

i would have posted the audio alone a while ago, but it is really hard to hear what is going on without the help of the image and subtitles that i intend to add for the difficult parts. the background noise is really loud.
as i said in the past, i will definitely have it by the middle of december. classes end next week, so there will be huge holes in my schedule, allowing me to get it done possibly before.
i appreciate all the offers to do it for me, and i can get a hold of another VCR i'll make a copy of the original tape and send that to someone if i haven't done it first. i only have one copy of the tape, and it is the only record (aside from my crappy memory) that this ever happened, so i am a little leary to trust it in the hands of any postal service. maybe after i finish the whole thing i'll still send it out to whoever has the best audio equipment (thor, maybe?) and the will, for a real nice polished copy that i would consider paying for.
anyway, stay tuned, but not too tuned.
hey there, vinney...definitely consider duping the master & working from the copy...god forbid the original gets mangled by some freak mechanical glitch or something...I speak from experience...preserve the original as best you can...and good idea not trusting the post office! When the MELVINS were in Seattle at Neumo's, I asked Buzz about the interview with Vinney. He said that he was "really cool" and a "nice guy" and that was about it. Dale didn't remember him, but maybe because he didn't talk to Dale. Anyway, Buzz gave me the impression that there was an interview conducted and I have no doubt that Vinney really did interview Buzz. It is not a Buzzo conspiracy, I think it happened but Vin must have reasons unknown for not posting the interview as of yet. :)
and even if we never see it, Vinney will never be de-moderatored on my watch
simply because he more than makes up for it with his Melvins Video Goldmine

and that's not all of it. that took me close to an hour to transcribe using a VCR, and it is only about 1/20th of the entirety.
i've come to hate the idea of this interview.
i tried pointing my digital camera at a television screen playing the video, and after an hour of taping i looked at it and it was totally unrecognizable.
i'm not sending it to anyone because it's the only copy i have, and i don't trust the post office.
the only viable option is to take it to my school library, convert it to digital, take it back home, and subtitle many many lines of it because parts are completely inaudible thanks to obscenely loud club employees.

any everyone who has been saying that i have been very busy with school, you are all absolutely correct. i've already been spending a lot of time editing and shooting for a production class, so finding time to do this is not easy. i can't blame it on "that girl" anymore, because that short-lived resurgence is back in the shitter.

P.S. when i compress it enough to get it on my website, the quality
will be even worse than it is now, shot in low light, high sound
on VHS. there are many stumbling blocks, but as i said, it will be
here eventually, and it isn't that fantastic.

this is my third year. after this semester only 2 more. it's pretty crazy to think about.
i'm looking forward to being done with school, as fun as it is.
i love animating. it is my secret passion. i really appreciate the time it takes to do drawn animations, as well as clay/object work. if you ever want to share any of your stuff i'd love to see it.
i took an animation course and my final project was a fully-painted cel cartoon. it was very rewarding to actually produce an authentic cartoon that doesn't look like colored pencils or something
I do an ongoing flip book animation in the corner of my journal :P

I drove down from Burlington Vermont to see this show with my then-roommate. He worked for the radio station at our college.
another friend of ours (and radio station employee) was in some kind of communication with some people from the melvins
(possibly Tim Moss), and they/he basically suggested that we interview them at this show. Curt and I drove down early because
we were supposed to do it before the show started. We were told that we couldn't do it before and that we'd have to do it afterwards.
After an amazing show, buzz came out and met us at the bar. I gave him an Icebot toy because i know he collects things like this.
I also presented him some Cracker Barrel cheese that i bought on the way down because i heard that the melvins like it. This is apparently
a rumor.
the interview went very well. Buzz was incredibly jovial and talkative, leading the conversation in all sorts of interesting directions.
i sort of got the impression that he enjoyed being interviewed by an actual fan that listened to the music religiously as opposed to some
press-idiot that talks about nirvana constantly. the interview was recorded onto VHS and as soon as i can get it transferred to digital format
i will be posting it somewhere on the internet and will provide a link here and elsewhere.
after the interview, buzz signed some vinyl that
i brought as well as a "Prick" shirt that i made a few years back. i told him that i wore it to This concert when he came out and apologized
that we couldn't get in. he claimed to remember the incident but i suspect he was just telling me so to make me happy. as we were leaving
i saw dale and told him they were great tonight. he offered to sign stuff and then he offered some drumsticks. i didn't even ask. the melvins
are a fine bunch of guys.
I think i got back to Vermont late that night/early the next morning-just in time for class.

I know it's probably crazy to actually suggest something at this point but why the hell not. Both video cameras and youtube have improved drastically since the beginning of 2006. A Sony Flip HD camera I bought used for $80 will let me film things off my TV in pretty decent quality. Not to mention that youtube let's you upload huge files now too so he wouldn't have to worry about chopping up the video.

Scheduled dates are Nov 8, 9, 10, & 11 @ a private residence in Castella, CA. (Thanks Carole!!)

after the interview, buzz signed some vinyl that i brought as well as a "Prick" shirt that i made a few years back. i told him that i wore it to This concert when he came out and apologized that we couldn't get in. he claimed to remember the incident but i suspect he was just telling me so to make me happy. as we were leaving i saw dale and told him they were great tonight. he offered to sign stuff and then he offered some drumsticks. i didn't even ask. the melvins are a fine bunch of guys.
I think i got back to Vermont late that night/early the next morning-just in time for class...

Buzz was incredibly jovial and talkative, leading the conversation in all sorts of interesting directions. i sort of got the impression that he enjoyed being interviewed by an actual fan that listened to the music religiously as opposed to some press-idiot that talks about nirvana constantly. the interview was recorded onto VHS and as soon as i can get it transferred to digital format i will be posting it somewhere on the internet and will provide a link here and elsewhere.
after the interview, buzz signed some vinyl that i brought as well as a "Prick" shirt that i made a few years back. i told him that i wore it to This concert when he came out and apologized that we couldn't get in. he claimed to remember the incident but i suspect he was just telling me so to make me happy. as we were leaving i saw dale and told him they were great tonight. he offered to sign stuff and then he offered some drumsticks. i didn't even ask. the melvins are a fine bunch of guys.
I think i got back to Vermont late that night/early the next morning-just in time for class...

I can't speak for Vinny, but I've had it for a few years now I think. I finally bought a little device that connects a VCR to my laptop and records, so I finally got it done.

equal parts procrastination (an art over which I have utter mastery), bouts of forgetfulness, paranoia and lack of access to technological means. I've carried the tape around to various places i've lived, keeping it amongst my most well-guarded treasures (only partially for my own sake - mostly because of the bizarre life of its own it assumed due to this board.) at one time i got my parents to keep it in a safe they have at their house :lol:
my plan had always been to digitize it - as idlehanz finally did. i had a few people offer to help with that over the years but I was hesitant to let it out of my possession. nuts, i know. it was like just annoying enough to not deal with it at any given time, but important enough to me to not write off altogether. it was also sorta fun having it turn into this wacky cult legend!
Ryan was kind enough to offer to digitize the thing and I trusted him with it. I also liked that it sort of coincided with the documentary. felt like a good culmination for The Interview's story.

Thanks, man! It was a long time ago and it's pretty funny to watch myself - I was clearly very nervous and excited. If I were to do it again I'd relax and just have a conversation; which Buzz clearly wanted to do. I kept asking very "band interviewy" questions. I don't even think I said "hey how are you doing?" when we sat down hah.
also I don't know what the fuck we were doing with a VHS camcorder in 2005... It makes the interview seem like it took place in 1989!

I saved the link and finally got around to watching the interview just now. I really enjoyed it. One of the better Buzz Q&A's in some of the specifics that he elaborated upon. I think the distance from now to then actually made it more insightful in a way. Thanks Vinny and Idle.
