I'm really excited to announce a new Melvins cassette that I'm releasing along with my friend Joe's record label Small Doses! On February 8, 2003, Melvins performed live to accompany Cameron Jamie's Super 8 Film BB at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. They performed the score twice, each time offering a unique take on the songs Hung Bunny and Roman Dog Bird from the legendary Lysol record. Both performances are featured on this release. The audio was mastered for cassette by James Plotkin and the tapes were professionally duplicated onto the highest quality chrome plus tape. The music sounds amazing and massive. The cassettes are packaged in a custom, letterpress printed, die cut box made by Stumptown Printers in Portland, Oregon. There are 15 different cassette shell colors dispersed in the run. Each of the 500 tapes features a unique cover image – no two are alike!
The Melvins' Hung Bunny/Roman Dog Bird cassette will make its debut at the Prick release party on August 11, 2016 at Grumpy's in Minneapolis. Melvins will have them on subsequent tour dates as well. The majority of the run will be sold at small-doses.com on a release date that will be announced in the coming weeks.

This is a special release that I've been thinking about doing for a while now and came to fruition over the past few months after pulling the plan together and receiving the Melvins blessing. Aside from it being a great recording of a unique piece of music by the band, it also is a sort of personal celebration around the years of working on this site and the desire to put something like this out and share it with the people that have visited themelvins.net over the years, contributed to the wiki, and come together on the forum.

Definitely want one of those, they look bad-ass!
Woah! Outstanding work on the packaging!
Plotkin has done amazing work in the past, I can't wait to hear how they sound.

As of now this is the only one I am keeping for myself. It's my friend Chris who passed away a few years ago. I've known him since I was about 8 years old. The night this photo was taken I dressed him up like a robot and we listened to Frank Zappa and filmed a short film that I have not been able to edit.

Also, if you ever see one of the dark green tapes on eBay let me know because that means one of my friend's is a jerk

I believe that is Referred to as *Dubbing*..and, if you need this done with yours let me know, I can probly do a smaller run of *player* copies for people if I can get my hands on a few copies if you dont intend to use yours for everyday listening.
And...on closer inspection those sleeves look Absolutely Top notch! Like, Just WOW! That is all, good work! well done! Im so proud of you Brian! 8) Who did the printing? ooooo... foil stamping! its SOOO HOT!!! MMMM-MMMMmm!!!! =P~
I am also curious to inquire what sort of High speed dubbing machine was used for the run.
What Type of Pancakes are those Shells Loaded with, are they deadstock or is it something Totally new as older tape can behave like Film and eventually wash over time making margin for inconsistencies and affect overall Lifespan...Also, is it mixed batch of Tape stock?..not to be technical but this would make front page headlines over at www.tapeheads.net and you should get in touch with some of those people and make an announcement about it there! it will Turn some heads...(no tape pun intended!)
My guess is TASCAM T-3000 Tape duplicator machines were involved.
ohhh man, Im having a serious moment right now.
So proud to be a member here.

goddam i wish i was going to grumpys-

the Melvins "were"...
Just returned home a few minutes ago after the show this evening. Have to give a shoutout to EVERYONE responsible for this release! Without even listening to it yet, it was such a satisfying purchase for me! First of all, I'm a huge fan of live sets. So that's something to look forward to. But considering the price tags of everything else that was on the table! This release was a no brainer! Not to mention, I picked up 3 tapes, all with different artwork, and of a local live recording! Cool! And happy to disclose, one of the three I purchased really hit home as far as artwork
Tapes were my favorite pieces I'd seen at the tables! Very nice work!
Over a third of the tapes the band has sold last night so the rest should be up on Small Doses for sale next week. I'll give the exact day/time when we get that decided. Anyone that gets a tape should consider posting a pic of theirs here, they're all different and it'll give me a little excitement to see them out in the territories!

You know im not the biggest fan right now as far as some packaging goes, but it looks really cool. Perhaps some backstory on it?

Yep, punk rock right? We're still doing the bean counting as far as costs we put into making them so we may need to sell them online for $11 or $12 to recoup. Not profit driven and hope it doesn't offend, as I'm sure you can guess the band likes keeping things at the merch table in factors of $5 so that's why there may be a minor price shift online. Additionally, I learned firsthand that shipping a single one of these to Canada costs $9 and change & Europe costs $13 and change plus the envelope cost so most of them will probably end up staying in the states as that may be a turnoff.

$10 isn't too bad for a cassette. I know they're cheaper to press than vinyl for sure so that's a perfectly reasonable price.
If there's any copies left by the time Louisville hits I'm definitely snagging one.

Very soon there will be a pre-order exclusive to bbs members for a limited number of the cassettes. The link will be shared privately by me, details of that process will be explained hopefully in the next 24-48 hours. The regular on-sale will occur not long after that is over, but I want the folks here that want one to get one obviously. We have finished our bean counting and the tapes will be $12 + shipping to cover our expenses. Calculating Paypal fees and bubble-mailer costs factored into that determination along with the actual production/front-end costs (printing/cassettes/mastering/band copies)

Yep, there will be a limit of 1 or 2 per order, we're still mulling that over. We want people to get their hands on one of these and not hoard. People that attempt to game the system will be refunded.

The box the cassette is wrapped up in is referred to as a bradpack by the printing company that we worked with stumptown: https://www.stumptownprinters.com/print-services/c-cassette-packaging-101/
They're used by a lot of folks in the cassette world, Joe has released other cassettes on his label in the past in bradpacks. so stumptown did the letterpress printing on the brad pack on one of their old letterpress machines that you can check out on their site. The die-cut in the center for the image to be inserted was something that they did custom for us based on our specifications, we had to manually apply each image after numbering it to the pack ourselves once we had the packs shipped to us in MN. Joe & I came up with the idea together, originally we threw around a few ideas and were thinking of doing 5 different images, but I decided to go nuts and do 500 and guarantee that no one would be able to collect them all. Joe designed the layout on the package as far as the text etc. he's a great graphic designer. as far as looking good on vinyl, joyful noise does something similar with their almost live series as far as using the fold up cardboard thing and having a die-cut.

Not much of a mystery, it's Roman Dog Bird according to the band, it's easy to typo it since Bird Dog's are an actual thing while Dog Bird's really aren't.

On a side note, i like the grey colour of the walls there Conda. Tempted to try that myself.
That's the first thing I did when we moved in here. Bought 2 cans of Dulux and painted
every room grey. You can hang any art, and the walls remain neutral.

This is what they are: http://nationalaudiocompany.com/731-Music-Grade-Tabs-Out-Cassettes-in-Color-Shells-P4316.aspx
These are Chrome Plus, "featuring uniform output from 20 to 20,000 Hz, providing better tonal balance than any other cassette."
My favorite two songs!

Just got mine pre-ordered! Thank you very much! This looks fantastic :)
Are we allowed to order a second cassette from today's sale if we already ordered from the bbs presale? Or would that lead to a cancellation of one or both transactions? Thanks. Asking for a friend. 8-[

Yep, people that took part in the pre-sale are not subject to the rule of today's public sale as far as one order only, this means you could order
two more today if you are so inclined with the same paypal account. We did the pre-sale because we didn't know what the response would be for these and how quickly they would sell out on our end, I wanted to give a few days for people on the board that might not have been on top of things to grab one before today and the response was great, thank you for that! We may get a lot of orders so combining the shipments on the regular and pre-orders may not be possible, this is a two man operation: we did not outsource this work to Canada! They may go quickly or they may take a while to sell, they're cassettes not vinyl so there are a lot of unknowns here! http://www.small-doses.com/shop/melvins-tape/
Thanks. If they linger, I'll post them up on tapeheads.net.

yeah, i was afraid this might happen. good thing you guys got yours in the pre-sale eh? once a couple hundred people are hitting refresh instead of over 1,000 i'm sure the site will start working again. it's essentially the same method "hackers" use with botnets for denial of service attacks!!
update: joe moved the server to a faster one and the orders are working again, less than 100 left so it looks like they'll be gone by the end of the day, sorry for any pain caused during the initial onsale time!!

72 hours actually, i did that because i knew there was a possibility of folks around here missing out for one reason or another otherwise, even mentioned ahead of that 72-hour window to be on the lookout for the announcement of it! :buzz:
Damn. So this is what happens when I don't log on here for a week.
:(
Crap. If anyone has an extra please let me know. I will try and hit up Walsby this weekend too.
Still on the table, according to my sources.

Yep, I got a red. The cover/photo of mine is really weird, basically it could be the cover art if they did a single for "Hideous Woman". (No I don't post pics). It's an older lady with this ridiculous blond '80s style hair, sitting in a union hall I imagine(since she's wearing a union badge). Looks like she smokes 2 packs a day and has cocktails at 9AM.
Yeah, this lil' fucker sounds great, better than the MPLS CD. Question - Is Side A the Late Set, and Side B the Early Set? I ask because the tape doesn't have printed on it Side A or 1, and it is wound to start with Late Set.
Significant amount of blank tape at the end of at least one side (first side I played I didn't pay attention). Seems like they're different?

Go to your room.

Yep we made the late set the side it was wound to since it was longer, so it is essentially the a side, but we didn't see a need to put a/b on the tape since it's not an album etc. I threw out the idea to Joe of slowing the early set down times four and clipping it, then putting it after the set finished after a brief silence to fill the empty space at the end of the tape but we decided against it. Might have been fun, it sounded cool but never even got to the stage of asking the band about it, it was late in the game and was probably an overstep to consider anyways. Chief, the tape you got has an image of a waitress at Binion's in Las Vegas, kind of thought she looked like she'd fit in as a bit part in a Lynch film so figured you'd get a kick out of it

The material on the cassette is included on the below release which was on CD, however we did remaster it for our cassette release and one of the two sets was only in MP3 format on the 3rd disc which is a data disc.

The Black and Light Pink are "band exclusive" colors. They also got a handful of the Lime Greens.
The Rhodamine Red's have been dubbed the BBS exclusive color so if you choose to make an order when the times comes on the small doses site and want one of those shoot me a PM with your order# to get one of those until they run out if interested. Also, if you ever see one of the dark green tapes on eBay let me know because that means one of my friend's is a jerk
