Title: (A) Senile Animal
Post by: blag jesus himself on August 29, 2006, 06:19:14 PM
I decided to make a thread where we could post reviews & opinions of the new album, so we can read them without having to wade through pages and pages of gossip and rumors of a secret love affair between Buzz and Jared.

So, if you find a review somewhere, or have heard the album yourself somehow (though that's not possible, since it's not out yet...), put it here!

I 'found' this from some genius on last.fm

(the) Melvins
"(a) Senile Animal"
2006

Well, it's that time of the month again:  a new Melvins album has been released.  What do we get this time around?  Exactly what a big portion of Melvins fans have been waiting for: a real, new MELVINS album.  No Lustmord, no Jello Biafra, no re-creations of old albums.  Just a new album by Buzz, Dale, and Bassist Guy.  Although, if you're looking for a 100% pure, unadulterated, barely-legal Melvins experience, you'll have to wait just a little bit longer.  They replaced old bassist Kevin Rutmanis with new bassist Jared Warren (from Karp & Big Business).  Thing is, he sings on a lot of the songs, too.  This may upset you, until you hear him and realize he basically sounds like a younger, scarier Buzz: imagine the vocals from "Eggnog" mixed with the vocals from "The Bloated Pope" and you get a pretty good idea of how this sounds.

In addition to the double vocalists, you have two drummers as well.  Jared brought his best friend Coady from Big Business, and he adds to the percussive mayhem on the album.  This time when you think Dale must have four arms to pull off some of his drumming: you'll be right.  The extra member adds an new level of interest to the music because there is just so much going on with the drums alone.  Plus, the Melvins can now be referred to as a Fearsome Foursome, which is nice.

This is the most straightforward Melvins album since....ever.  The closest thing to this is Stoner Witch, and even that album had stuff like "Magic Pig Detective","Goose Freight Train", and "Lividity" to scare off the Pantera fans.  (a) Senile Animal is nothing but big, heavy slabs of metal.  This is understandable, coming after the ambient-noise-drone-fest of "Pigs of the Roman Empire".  They followed up the relatively quiet "Honky" with the heaviest album in the world "The Maggot", so it should be no surprise that this album sounds like it does.  Each song is built around heavy riffing, intense drumming (two drummers, remember?) and screaming by Buzz and Jared.  "Blood Witch" has the stilted, jittery riffing of "The Bloated Pope".  "A History of Bad Men" sounds like a distant cousin of "Night Goat", with its super catchy chorus and a bass line as thick and groovy as Mamma Cass.  "Civilized Worm" sounds dangerously close to a power ballad, but it's saved by the minute long outro of Dale and Coady abusing their poor drums.  The only semi-quiet moment comes on the album closer "A Vast Filthy Prison", but the chanting-monk-style vocals make it creepy enough to not seem out of place.  The rest of the album sounds like they realized how cool "Honey Bucket" was and tried to do that seven more times.  I'm exaggerating, but the album really is composed mostly of two and a half minute, fast, heavy songs.  This may upset or delight you, depending on how you felt about the Melvins' recent musical direction.  But it makes you realize: there is no direction.  This album could be followed up by a four hour bass solo.  Or a covers tribute to the Allman Brothers Band.  It's your job as a Melvins fan to just shut up and enjoy it.  Or shut up and hate it.  Either way...

my initial thought was "yuck".  i actually (foolishly) turned it off after a few songs.  i was disappointed.
then....as things tend to go....i listened to it again, and again, and again....and now i am QUITE pleased with it.
the vocal harmonies are plenty plentiful for me.  bordering on too much.  buzz's voice is one of the big things that defines their sound for me, and all the other guy singing makes me feel it is not actually the melvins. ( )
i wish the used the double drumming more often.  it seems that they reserved it for special expositions and most of the rest of the time they are playing the same thing.  there are a few times where it sounds like maybe they are playing the same thing but if you listen closely it is physically impossible given the number of limbs a human has.  maybe it would have been overdone otherwise?  i don't know.  i've come to trust their judgement.

overall, i would say this album is quite straightforward and....fun?  it's not ultra-weird or unique, per-say.  i guess in the end i am most disappointed with its "normalcy".  BUT, on a whole i am NOT disappointed.  i like it!  i think it has a very good sound and of course the typical melviny heaviness (track 8 ).  i also appreciate the variety of songs.  there are a couple more happy, major sounding songs, one where buzz's lyrics actually seem to tell a sad story, a few real heavy sludge balls, and some in between ones.  most melvins' albums have this variety to a degree, but for some reason i notice it more on here.

i DO like it, but i need to listen to it many more times to create a coherent opinion.

oh oh, there's this: it needs to be way longer.  it seems to end way too fast.
"dontyoutellme" and i were discussing how it ends.  she made a nice comment on the matter, but i won't share it just yet because not everyone has heard it.  it's not some big surprise or something, but the way an album ends is significant to some people, and i don't want to say.

...i think some people may be surprised with the large number of people here that have a review...........      ...ninjas

another thought:  at times when i have it really loud in my car stopped at an intersection, i feel a little ....lame.... because of the vocals.  sometimes i feel like it appears that i am listening to some kind of cheesy 80s metal band. i usually think the sounds coming out of my car are bad ass, but for a few tracks on the album i get the feeling that if someone with the same musical tastes as me walked by and heard the music they would think, "damn, this guy is uninformed.  he should listen to the melvins!"   hahhaha what does that mean?

EDIT!!

after reading blag jesus' posted review, i am BACK IN LOVE WITH THIS ALBUM!
writing my own made me doubt it, but now i remember why it's great!!  woohhoooooo

and i especially like this part:
"But it makes you realize: there is no direction.  This album could be followed up by a four hour bass solo.  Or a covers tribute to the Allman Brothers Band.  It's your job as a Melvins fan to just shut up and enjoy it.  Or shut up and hate it.  Either way..."

yeah, i work for ipecac
i grease pattons hair

i think the live shows this time around will be amazing, especially if altamont is there....POTRE will be interesting if they do it with two drummers, which i'm sure they will...every time i've seen them play that song live they've done it differently, so i'm anticipating this new incarnation of one of their coolest songs

why not.

like the memory of waves rolling upon the sand at sunset while running beside the dog of your childhood,
so does a senile animal create the need to revisit.

revisit?
you must listen to this album many times. distance from the first listen makes the heart grow fonder,
surely you've realized this....
[i dont really ever "review" melvins albums. who would i review them to? i decided to share though...]

i can say that i love the begining and end of this little bitch. the title becomes increasingly more dramatic because this album could be sung by a barbershop quartet and sound decent.
yeah, i love track ocho, yeah
its my favorite cause im a sucker for that dramatic shit [especially while driving].
i was expecting more out of the drumming. i figured some kind of crazy sleeve tricks. not complaining just surprised.
good timing on everything is a duh. a lot of the clarity of the vocals, song structure; etc- reminded me of the atlantic recordings. some serious nightgoating at parts. i kind of get confused with the whole quartet as now im guessing to certain things [who plays what..."sound..."] that would be clear before. thats why im excited for the live show. oh yeah fade outs that arnt studio produced fadeouts are okaye in my book.

not dissapointed with this though. at all; in fact.
overall message: "cant we live in harmony, lots and lots of cute harmony."

yeah i'd have to say this album is really good from start to finish, and yes, it does have a stoner witchy/houdiny feel....  (yeah, i know theyre spelled wrong)

the melvins never cease to amaze me.....ever

i'm seeing them on sept. 10 in tacoma and i can't wait to hear this album played live....who knows what they'll do when.

Even though I don`t think it`s Buzz and Dales idea or wish, this album could perhaps be the one that could open the market towards a broader audience. They will at least get those that are in between alternative and chart-orientated music. They have written 10 extremly catchy songs, and I can`t imagine anything else than that it will sound HUGE live. I think it`s a natural progress for Melvins to release an accessible album, after experimenting on the albums prior.

An accessable album, but still lightyears in front of every single band on this planet. Can`t wait to get home and listen to it again.

what can I say, the album I've been waiting for all my life!!!
it starts slowly with a heavy, sludgy song called "boris", only a genius could have come up with a name like that for a song!!!
it then continues with "anaconda", where dale and coady's drum skills really show!!! I don't think dale could have played this one  by himself...
I didn't really like the other stuff at the begining, but after I've listened to "your blessened" 6,236 times, I can defintely say it's a good song...   a real 1991 feeling to it though...   it's like the melvins are going back to their roots...
the end of the album is a huge surprise....  I know album endings are important to some people so I won't spoil it for u guys, I'll just say that in the last song, "cow", all band members collaberate to produce a killer drum solo with dale finally getting the help he needs to become a decent drummer.  if I'm not mistaken they took the 2 drummer thing further and, as mentioned, all band members played on one drum kit together!!!  dale was playing bass drum (about the only thing he CAN play), coady was in charge of the snare, and Buzz, u won't believe it, was the "cymbal officer"!!! banging on these mother fuckers like there is no tomorrow...  crazy shit....
all in all, a really good album if u listen to it enough times...  I mean with song names like "zodiac", "ligature", and "if I had an exorcism" how can u go wrong???  also, the "promo" copy I just got in the (e)mail from (a) guy(?) called soulseek, (a) really funny fucker, had a spelling mistake, so song number 4 was spelled "it's shaved" instead of "it's shoved"... ah, funny...   so now after every time I shave my pubic hair I listen to that song, put the CD next to my penis and joyfuly shout "it's shaved"...  man, great albums sure make my day!!!
to conclude, defintely the best album of 2006, too bad some of u lame fuckers couldn't get ur hands on (a) promo copy...

Something different, shall we refer to the new album as A Senile Animal, without the brackets? I know it says '(A)'on the album cover, but it also says '(The) Melvins', so I assume the brackets are just part of the design, and are not part of the official album title. Also, on the Ipecac website it says A Senile Animal.

Civilised Worm is favourite so far. It sounds like cross between Maggot and HAT. I wish Buzzo's vocals were higher in the mix but generally the vocals work very well. I've only listened it three times and I am starting to like it already

Got my promo copy last night (thanks mackle).

Notes of import (ie. theories):
- All music was written by KingB. I don't think Jared or Coady had a say on the music. Its not necessarily their style. It is pure KingB though
- KingB's guitar tone has changed. This is probably to accomodate Jared's bass tone/style
- The song style seems a little classic, like if you put Ozma or Gluey Porch on 45rpm instead of 33rpm
- Gems so far: The Talking Horse, Civilized Worm, A History of Bad Men
- Does Civilized Worm remind you guys of With Teeth off of Lysol?
- When the hell did KingB start using real lyrics? Have I not listened to the Melvins in that long?!?
- Girls don't appreciate you listening to the new album with headphones on while attempting to have sex with them. I didn't get to listen to the album until this morning...

Pros:
- Vocals are amazings. Jared backing KingB works really really well!!
- Two words: Double drums!
- Lyrics on A History of Bad Men are amazing. The melody for the vocals is really good too. Same goes for Civilized Worm.
- Heavy. They don't fuck around on this album. No crazy noise shit.
- No Kevin Rutmanis
- Good production

Cons:
- KingB's guitar tone has changed to something I would consider less powerful (just my opinion)
- Some of the songs aren't catching my attention. Maybe I can't keep up with them?

I would think the hardcore Melvins fans will really dig this album. I'm not sure I would say this album would make the Melvins more accessible. Maybe more listens will change my mind on that.

I do like this album and have been waiting for it since last year. Its Christmas in August!

I like the album, but yeah Buzz has changed his guitar tone to less "in your face" but I guess to make room for the bass man that is Jared.

Just gave it a complete listening, first off I'm not as blown away as I was w/ HAT, but then again it's really not comparable (don't know why I thought it would be, but I did)  I do like the vocal harmonies.  As a whole it left me craving those master buzz riffs he like to do and I thought the whole sound of his guitar has taken a turn on a lot of the songs.  Some tracks really caught my ear though:  Civilized Worm, The Mechanical Bride and A Vast Filthy Prison.  Most of all to end on a totally positive note, I was loving the dual drums throughout, kind of completes the album.

I couldnt hold back my interest. The two things that strike me the best about this one is the vocals - I dig what they are doing throughout. I also like that they carried over the bass tone from Big Business. And of course there are a couple songs that have some really good use of the double drummer... I forget the names right now... but so far I am liking this alot.

i just finished listening to it..
i like it a great deal..   it's easily one of, if not the most accessable records the melvins have ever done.  that's not a bad thing at all, but i agree that this may open up their fanbase a bit.

i was a bit skeptical on jared's backing vocals - until i heard them.  they compliment buzz (and dale) perfectly..    and lyrically, this might be the most coherent batch of songs buzz has written.

i really like the flow of it, it works nicely.

it's great.  just listen to it.  a lot.  and if you "get" it early, get it again when it comes out.

OK, I downloaded the official and legal mp3, "A Civilized Worm". My initial thoughts about the track are very positive. The drums at the beginning sound kind of phased which is cool I guess but I am thinking it could be the mp3 format at 96kps that makes the drums sound like that. When the guitar came into the picture, the tone and the main riff during the first half of the song sound vaguely like "Queen" from the album Stoner Witch. What really stands out in my view are the duel/harmonized vocals, especially in the second half of the song. I dig the vocals totally. It's a dynamic that adds even more to the Melvins plate. Nice little touch of panned echo on the word "wait" toward the end of the song. The song ends with a bit of cool twin drumming and a bit of guitar jack noiseloop. This song is a nice little number.

...and calmer than the rest of the album.

the dual vocals on this thing are insane.
their voices meld/compliment each other so well that it is hard to hear it as two people sometimes.  they've created a new animal and it is beautiful.

what can I say, the album I've been waiting for all my life!!!
it starts slowly with a heavy, sludgy song called "boris", only a genius could have come up with a name like that for a song!!!
it then continues with "anaconda", where dale and coady's drum skills really show!!!

Damn, Civilized Worm kicks ass! The song is just beautiful! I get the same kind of feeling when listening to Skin Horse. Great song, great outro. I love the vocal harmonies!. Jared really does sound like a younger Buzz.
So the song's in standard tuning. I'm going to try to figure it out on guitar. For those who have heard the rest of the album, what are the tunings? Dropped D, standard, C (like most of Pigs), etc... Just curious.

 OK, let's try this...

Hey all, I'm new to the board. But I have been reading it for a year or two. I just haven't registered, until now!

I was too ansy and I downloaded it. But I will definitely buy it, don't worry. It is definitely the most straight-forward Melvins album. Most of the songs could be played on the radio. All Melvins songs should be played on the radio, but all of these songs could be "radio friendly".

I probably should have waited, but I just love those Melvins too much!

EEERRRR!!!! wrong answer.   radio bad.
melvins will never be radio friendly.  they could record an entire disc of kanye west produced hip-hop and the radio would STILL shun them.   just the way I like it.   I got nervous when I heard Hooch on XM.

i think it's going to happen one day. it will be very short lived and very strange. then it will disappear into history

NOW, about the album.
i just re-fell in love with it. hard this time.

so many people have listened to the Civilized Worm sample, but i can't believe nobody has mentioned how utterly awesome it is when the song just slowly dies mid-track.....then comes back to life right where it left off!  oh those melvins.....

I have heard "A History of Bad Men" by way of a friend. I myself have not downloaded it. This song could be on the radio if a station was so inclined. The song is great. It would do mainstram radio justice if it ever was. Don't you wish the Melvins success? Radioplay would surely garner more album sales. I think the Melvins have already proved they would not sell out. Consider their stint with Atlantic as evidence. In fact I might contact radio stations in my locality when the album comes out and try to persuede them to play a track off of the album.

hey there,

long time reader first time poster... (to be read in cheesy fm talkback radio caller voice).

i have to agree with "dudbean" on the end of track civilised worm, it does have an 80's kinda sound... you know the cold, cold, cold part and it really stuck in my brain for days wondering what it reminded me of.
then it came to me after a while, they are cheap trick harmonies! FUCKING AWESOME!
I love it.
and i also really like the "wait" vocal effect, it sounds like buzz making a deliberate reference to the first line in the kiss song "makin' love".

i wouldnt call it cheezy though, i would call it genius.

oh, and i know how shit it is too download an album when you should be supporting the band, (i play in a band myself that has had albums frequenly available online before they officially come out), BUT.... its the fucking melvins and i will buy this on pretty much any and all formats they decide to release.

i had sent this to the person who let me hear the album, but i figured since we're all just sounding off around here and i've joined the general fray i'll make like samuel beckett and be unable to stop talking:

"thanks for sending me the album. in deference to your request, just a couple of thoughts about the album:

it grows and gains articulacy upon repeated listens. the first time i listened to it, i thought that it all bled together a lot, particularly due to the preponderance of "gang" style vocals. as i say, though, nuances became disambiguated the further i delved into the record. the abundance of backing vocals could be taken in more than one light: at times they blend together so well, its hard to tell who's singing and whose vocals are up front. this can throw a listener off but i generally like the somewhat subtle counterpoints provided. surely a result of jared's and buzz's vocal similarities, this brings up what is to my mind the essential crux of this album-- its self-reflexivity.  clearly big business in specific and, generally, more or less the entirety of jared's publicized musical career (pointedly karp, the whip, and big business) is buried neck-high in melvins influence. most clear in the probably at least partially coincidental similarity of vocals, but spreading across many points of style and songwriting technique, this influence makes for an interesting case of musical self-refraction.  the big business members reinvest the melvins with their own fully developed sensibilities (which can't escape the influence of the melvins oeuvre).  thus the melvins gain an added sense of themselves from the point of view of the acolyte, so to speak, allowing  a fuller, ironic (perhaps in baudelaire's / schlegel's / de man's sense of the trope) perspective of their musical identity, in this vertiginously lucid and unidirected venture. i myself have (almost) always enjoyed the caprices of the melvins, but there are those who feel albums are often uneven because of this experimental sensibility. '(a) senile animal' eschews all of that, taking one idea, or one kind of idea, and running with it. i can't really think of an album that as solidly and effectively deploys a straightforward rock'n'roll aesthetic unbroken across its span since perhaps 'bullhead'.  yet, for the focused stare of the album, new elements of melody, harmony and almost-pop cohesion come to the fore, particularly in 'civilized worm' and 'a history of drunks'. i could've dealt with more complicated drum interplay, but this isn't to say there isn't any, or that the drums are not excellent. in fact, if only from a recording standpoint, the drum sounds have a clarity and take up more space (which is good) in a way absent since at least 'stag'. at the risk of ending abruptly, i will end (abruptly) these ramblings. thanks again for letting me hear the record."

civilised worm reminds me more of lizzy than queen myself- as far as gtr goes anyway.
i know which chord remind you guys of queen though.
...all three songs mentioned are fucking great anyway!  8)

there's only 12 notes, so i guess after 20+ albums you're bound to do something that sounds vaguely similar to another song now and then.

this album makes many comments on many topics.
the melvins are beginning to enter a point in their career where they have done so much, that if they don't enter into conversation with history, one might accuse them of being a bit lazy or ignorant.
does this seem like a fair enough theory to anyone?  or maybe it's the age-old melviny reason:   they just wanted to.  it's not cheesy, it's not anything, it's just queen buzzo's Fucking WHIMS, man.

and by the way, that picture is completely hilarious

I haven't heard any leaks yet, and i refuse to make a
decision until Oct 10th but;

Man I'm literally crying tears of joy while listening to this!
And it's not the residual E playing havoc with my joy receptors!!
Not a word of a lie. I cannot believe how great Buzz and
Jared sound together! And the drums with Dale and Coady
doing little fills and rolls between the beats of each other
is superb, they sound like John Bonham x 2!! I would venture
to say, only three songs in, that this is the finest Melvins record
they have recorded in the modern era of their existence.
I will be buying this when it comes out, I will be telling my friends
to buy this, and I will be amazed if they don't crack the mainstream with
this and break big in some way. This thing has radio all over it.
What a pleasure it is to be a fan of this band, and an honor to be
involved in their orbit, however minimally we are, with the board
we mod at. This is a piece of sheer brilliance. I'm literally crying, did
I already say that??

all my love,
Brad

I agree with everything you say accept this little part.  me thinks the melvins already had their fifteen minutes of mainstreamity.  back when houdini came out.  the whole nirvana, grunge wave was their moment.  they rejected it and continue to reject it.  now they are too old (as a band) to all of a sudden break into the mainstream.
if they opened for tool and didn't start getting every tom, dick and redneck to buy their album, they never will.   I'm thinking they will continue on their cult path.  gaining some new fans here and there, but losing some old ones to marriage, kids, jobs,   you know.... grown-up stuff.

and this is why I love the melvins.

by the way conda... do I sense a little deja-vu?     :D

I've listend to it about 15 times now, and it's not going to be a favorite of mine.  :(

I'm not really into Big Business, and this record sounds more like BB than I thought it would.

"Civilized Worm" might be my least favorite Melvins song ever. I'm surprised some of you like it. It's terrible.

I absolutely love "A History of Bad Men," though, and I like "The Talking Horse," too. The rest of the songs should be a lot of fun to watch them play live.

I finally saw the cover for a seanile animal, and I was like, Woah, What the fuck?!?!?  I want a cover that rocks, like, with bats and fire and shit, not some doohickey guy you stick in a fish tank.  If the cover was for an Enya album, I'd be 'okay, this is alright for an Enya album', but for a Melvins album, this sucks!

As soon as I hear the album, I'll give a review on the music.

The album is mindblowing. I'm kinda tired (drunk), but (A)SA is better than I even hoped for (I'll say even more than than PORTE, which was incredible). The combination of A History of Drunks / Rat Faced / The Hawk in succession is some of the best music I've heard from Melvins, or anyone.

However, I have to agree that "Civilized Worm" is the weakest point in the album (despite having the best title). A lot of people have compared it to "With Teeth" which I think is valid as the mood/melody/dynamic of the first half (or so) of each song is very similar. But I don't really like "CV" and I love "WT," which has proven to be one of the Melvins' best known and loved songs (couldn't think of a more precise way to put "WT's" rep); there are some major differences to account for. First, "WT" is dynamic. Ir shifts from what was at the time the Melvins' most melodic piece into the perfect example of the heaviness that made them famous, in less than two minutes (Conversely, "CW" takes this rare burst of melody and grinds into dust). Second, this shift is unconventional in the respect that the shift is sudden yet seamless, and the way it ends with a "naked" vocal in the midst of its brutality makes for a perfect audial "cliffhanger" that is never resolved ("CW" does the opposite, while the drumming at the end is great, it creates a sort of lingering death for the song). Finally, "WT" also owes some its impact to its historical context, in the bigger picture. It is the last short track on the last album of the pre-major label Melvins (which signifies the sound that made them 'famous' (note: small quotes) in the first place. It is the capstone to an era of the band. "CW" seems like a re-hash.

Huh, it's actually realy trivial isn't it?

The new album is the cat's pajamas/speedo/diaphragm/whatever, but I was just getting tired of that particular comparison. I'll try to do a more proper review after after I get some sleep and sober up...

I've listened to the album about 15 times now and still not sure what to think...   didn't dig it at the begining, I dig it abit more now but I wouldn't say I'm blown away by it...   my fav song so far has to be "the hawk".
All in all, this has got to be the most "mainstream" melvins album... it's pretty straight foreward and I admit I sometimes miss a "touch of genious" that almost every melvins album has.  that something different they come up with which gives u that feeling where u just go - fuck, that's fucking genious!!!

Lysol & Pigs of the Roman Empire are the most closely related covers to the music itself, i think.

Buzz says everything relates and has meaning. So dig deeper, the covers are probably more related than you think.

Buzz is probably talking about global warming and everything flooding in the lyrics  of SENILE or something. Then the cover makes sense. I'll know in a little over a month.

Any way, i can't dis Mackie. She rocks the house. Neither here nor there.

I doubt Buzz is writing lyrics or having album covers designed to convey any kind political point or issue like global warming. Yes he was involved in the two "Jelvins" projects but aren't all the lyrics written by Jello? I find nothing in any previous Melvins albums that support this notion.

I think you just perfectly explained why each album is great in its own right. It is a testament to the Melvins greatness that they can both "rock the house" on one album and create a mood of trippy introspection on another. Personally, I think this is one of the reasons why they fucking rule.

i like the experimentation.  not only in song structure, note selection, etc. but with different types of sounds and approaches to what the idea of "music" is.  i got a lot of that on POTRE (and honky, crybaby, etc.) and would never be opposed to it.  maybe this just wasn't the album for that, but i'd like to see it again in the future.
they should use their senility and old age to their avant-garde advantage.  they can really go crazy and give up convention altogether.  for instance, why play in standard tuning, or tuning at all for that matter?  being in tune/time/coherency is the nastiest of all conventions.  RESIST! RESIST!

after reading what some people write about the records they put out, especially this one(which hasn't even came out yet!) I can understand why buzz would say something like, "tell us what YOU'RE doing, not what you think WE should do."

just because they have made music in the past that defies normal rock and roll convention does not mean that they are not a rock and roll band anymore.  nor does it mean that they should continue on a path towards complete musical deconstruction.  like alot of musicians, buzz and dale have changed their sound and playing style since their younger days, and no doubt their personal taste has changed.  but even though they've evolved to such a point that they can make a record like PIGS or COD does not mean that they shouldn't play "conventional" rock and roll anymore.

"being in tune/time/coherency is the nastiest of all conventions."
where's the vomit emoticon?

I've now listened to this 2 times through and I am blown away.  For some reason I have been a little weary of Buzz canning Monsieur Rutmanis and for some reason was hesitant to think that this album would match Hostile Ambient Takeover.  I know after listening to this band for 15 years that doubting Dale and the King is a little silly but after the two Jelvins and Pigs album I didn't know what to expect.  I CERTAINLY didn't expect this album to sound like this.  It's almost like they revisit most of their past albums albiet not for long in alot of these tunes.  This could very well turn out to be up there with Bullhead/Lysol/Eggnog/Stag.

It really is the shit isn't it!

Glad someone else thought those vocals sounded like Queen. That was the first thing I thought. They're great.

I hope AT release it on nice big fat vinyl.

Guys, I tried to enjoy this album but I failed.

None of it clicked. I'm not sure what has happened but it just felt so empty - and I strongly doubt that having the actual article in my hand and being able to enjoy the predictably brilliant artwork would've made any difference.

I still feel that Pigs is the best recorded thing they've done this side of 2000 (the absolute best being the UK Cameron Jamie tour - they have NEVER sounded as jaw-droppingly awesome as they did then) but I'm starting to think that they just aren't doing it for me anymore.

I wish they'd have done something radical, taken some real risks. The thing sounded old. That's not right.

I think buzz once said something along the lines of "you lose some fans to age or evolution and you gain some new fans to discovery. it all equals out."

I dig this album but I will admit it is slightly conservative compared to some of the things they've done.  like all melvins albums, you have to appreciate it for what it is. not what you expected out of it.
I give you points for honesty though grach.

if every single person on this board said they thought this album was a masterpiece then someone would be lying.

I'm still holding out for October. I just can't bring myself to listen to the leaks. Maybe I'm old-school, but waiting til release date is how I like to roll. Nothing against anyone who wants to listen to the leaks, mind you.

Guess after CoD anything sound conservative.
Is bb's tour ep 2 out?
I have the first and was wondering when the second would be for sale on the net and not just at gigs.
Or did you download it as well as a senile animal?

here's a new one from decibel magazine.
straight from the melvins-L about 2 minutes ago.  thanks mike!

The following was overheard in the dark alley known as the Melvins-L
Listserv List:

From Decibel Magazine, Nov. 2006:

MELVINS - A SENILE ANIMAL
Rated 9/10
"Salad of a thousand more delights"
With Spinal Tap, it was drummers. For the Melvins, evidently, it's
bass players. If, like me, you've lost count of the number of Melvins
albums since they debuted waaaay back in 1986 with "Six Songs," then
take comfort that they have had approximately one-third as many
bassists as they have albums: eight. Except now they have two bass
players (only one of whom appears on the album.) And two drummers.
But only one guitarist. Except when the new bass player switches to
guitar.
Confused? Well, you needn't be, because "A Senile Animal," the first
Melvins studio outing since 2002, is perhaps their best since the
heady days when they had major label cash behind them, circa
"Houdini." If nothing else, the doubled-up drumming invokes that
comparison, as the combination of Dale Crover and newbie Coady Willis
(Big Business) turns every song into what "Spread Eagle Beagle"
might've been had they bothered to write a song to go along with it.
Better still, the Melvins keep it not only simple but short: Of the
10 songs, six clock in at under three minutes, the remaining four
stretching out past the six-minute mark. And they're all pretty much
awesome. By the second track in, "Blood Witch," the album has
cemented a level of quality it maintains for the rest of the disc,
through the mid-album trio of up-tempo blasters "Rat Faced," "The
Hawk" and "You've Never Been Right," and on to the closing trilogy of
slow slugfests topped off by the inimitable Buzz Osborne's yowling
vocals. It's pretty much moot whether "A History of Bad Men," "The
Mechanical Bride" or the closing "A Vast Filthy Prison" stands out
the most. So we'll leave that decision for the obsessives and instead
fall down on our knees and thank G_d that there is absolutely,
positively, guaranteed no farting around to be found on this album
whatsoever. --Nick Terry

I have failed. I couldn't resist the live video footage posted. Damn, it sounds great. And the mirrored drummers... sweeeeeeet.

I can't wait til the Mr Small's show in Pittsburgh. My girl and I will probably be catatonic by the end of the show.

DubEMC, if you see two headless corpses at the back of the theater, propped against a wall with permanent metal-horns as hands, you know you've found us. But, for the love of God, Dub, please help us find our heads. They will come in handy for the trip back down 79.

i read a lot on here but don't post very often. i'm one of the rotten bastards who downloaded the entire thing on soulseek only because i read on this site that they were playing 8 out of the 10 songs on the cd live. i saw the show in lawrence, ks. last friday, had front row where i could look dale in the eyes, and noticed how he kept giving me weird looks as i was singing (yelling) along with the new tunes. i absolutely love the new cd and can't wait for oct.10 to get here to buy it and have the booklet, etc. this band deserves my $15. i have worshipped these guys since 1990, and think they are the definition of integrity. i've tried throughout the years to get my friends to think as i do but to no avail. their loss. the one person who i have converted is my 9 year old son who thinks the melvins and tool are the "coolest". love to all...

QuoteDearest comrades,

As we all anxiously await the outcome of the recent show of strength by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and its 'Great Leader' Kim Jong-Il, a different albeit arguably just as formidable show of strength rears its head across the horizon on this day the 10th of October in the year of OUR Lord Two Thousand and Six. I write not of a devastating natural disaster or another school shooting which calls into question our path of evolution, but one of the few things that can be relied upon as an affirmation of the greatness that is 'WE', (a) Senile Animal, the latest recording from those supremest of supreme leaders, the Melvins.
Now before you clean out your local munitions supplier in the preparation of forcing your entire region into purchasing the album by gunpoint, take note there are reasons you can supply prior to pistol whipping the locals into submission! The Melvins are now officially a four-piece. The new members are Jared Warren and Coady Willis, the guys from Big Business. If you are unaware as to who these people are or what this means take a few moments to grab a switch from the nearest tree, give yourself a few good lashes and then return to this e-mail.
Jared Warren has taken over bass duties in addition to additional vocals, this equals lots of vocal harmonies as there are now 3 people vibrating the vocal chords on this album. Beyond that, the thing that is really going to make your Mother's Kenny G discography literally burst into flames upon bringing (a) Senile Animal home for debriefing is the fact that Coady Willis is the Second drummer of the Melvins. When I first heard the Melvins had a new drummer I feared Dale had lost his arms to a radial saw making those birdhouses he is so famous for in the local craft shows up and down the beautiful Pacific coastline. Rest assured I was wrong! What this means is (a) Senile Animal has two drummers on every track and therefore a sound which is certain to provide a re-definition of your neighborhood watch's list of offenses.
An album of 10 tracks with titles such as "A History of Drunks" and "A Vast Filthy Prison", this is out now in the U.S. and should be available in all countries dependent upon it for music in short order.

Bought it today. Upon tearing open the sweet smelling cellophane, the first thing I flip through is the liner notes, which although not impressive, are solid with large pictures of the band members' sweaty faces pasted on each page. I am still not used to the cover picture. I don't like it. I think someone mentioned before that it is a little Primus - ish. Oh well, the back cover is cool with all the songs stacked up on one another. Sometimes I wish they would hire other artists instead of using Mackie every single time! Does anyone else agree?

Now, the music is by far their most straightforward in years, more so than HAT and even Stoner Witch. It kills though. The Hawk takes the cake and could be one of the Melvins finest songs - EVER! Other highlights include Blood Witch and a History of Drunks. The Mechanical Bride sounds like it was pulled right out of 1986 and A Vast Filthy Prison makes for a great closer with a subdued drum intro and thick guitar chugging like cough syrup. My SINGLE gripe is no matter how many times I listen to it, A History of Bad Men still reminds me too much of Night Goat. Once the vocals kick in, its not as bad, but that initial bassline is strange and confusing to me.

A Senile Animal pulls from every angle of the Melvins catalog and thats why every one on this board is going to love it. Its like a greatest hits career spanning package composed of new tunes. If you haven't bought this or haven't already been listening to it for months, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

It's finally October 10th and I'm trying to figure out where a good record store is in downtown washington dc.   I'm here on [big] business, (sorry I couldn't resist the pun) and I know next to nothing about this city.  Anybody know a good record store near the white house (I'm working about 4 blocks from there)?  Maybe GWB is a melvins fan.  I'll knock on the white house door to find out, hehe.  But seriously if anyone knows of a record store close to here I would be eternally grateful to get ahold of this puppy today.

Well okay, here's a longwinded review of (A) Senile Animal. All thoughts are my own.

It seems every time the Melvins change their lineup they release a massive album to mark the occasion. When Joe Preston joined the band, they released Lysol, which featured one track clocking in at 31 minutes. When Kevin Rutmanis joined, the band released the trilogy, a set of three different albums released within a years timespan. Hell, even when Mark D joined the band they released Prick, which could be described as a massive head fuck. And now that (A) Senile Animal is out, it is no different. However, instead of merely gaining one new member to play bass, the Melvins gain another drummer as well, with the boys of Big Business joining the ranks. Thats right, the perenial three piece is now a four piece featuring two drummers! And boy do they utilize them to the fullest. Rather than merely play the same thing, longtime drummer Dale Crover and new recruit Coady Willis compliment each others pounding while playing rather complex passages and there are several instances on the album where the drums are unaccompanied, allowing the two of them to pound the listener into submission. And speaking of pounding, some of these tracks, such as Rat Faced, with an intro similar to Revolve on Stoner Witch, and A History of Bad Men, featuring a bass line earily similar to the one used on the Man With the Laughing Hand is Dead featured on The Crybaby, do just that. But one of my favorite songs has to be Civilized Worm, featuring wonderful vocal harmonies between Buzz Osborne and Jared Warren. Speaking of Jared, the next track, A History of Drunks, brings to mind his earlier band Karp, with the hand claps during the middle section. The sequencing of tracks also needs to be mentioned: the way the tracks are arranged makes it feel like one long song, rather than several tracks merely lumped together. This brings to mind the band playing live, as they rarely take any breaks between songs. While one could argue that perhaps this album is too straightforward for a band that has put out such challenging work as Collosus of Destiny and Pigs of the Roman Empire, but longtime fans will still find plenty to like about this release, and for the uninitiated this is an excellent starting point. Overall it is another excellent album by a band that has been around for over twenty years now, yet still sounds as vital and important as the day they began.

I just picked it up today (at Best Buy of all places). I might be the only one to think this; but I might say this is their best album ever. Or at least my favourite anyway. Not one track on here is anything but flawless. Hopefully Big Business will be with the Melvins for a long time.

Reminds me a lot of the Atlantic days, and some of it, even before that.  I like it quite a bit, but the vocals are definitely the most strikingly different part.  I was about to say the drumming sounded like Dale hopped up on speed, but it's more like if he grew a couple extra arms and legs.  Melikey.

Have not bought it yet. I am hearing it on the website that norecess posted in another thread. I will agree that this album is a straightforward endeavor, but what exactly does that mean when talking about the Melvins? I guess when compared with solely their own albums, you can say that. This album is short and sweet and condenses what "the bloat" stated in his review about the album pulling from just about every angle of the Melvins catalog. The first track "The Talking Horse" starts the album off nicely with a fuzzy bass riff and killer drum work with Buzz coming in with some noisy guitar. Nice introduction of the twin vocals on this track, a definite rocker toward the end with particular emphasis on the percussion aspect of the drum work. "Blood Witch", bares a resemblance to Bloated Pope, which is a good thing, and the vocals on this track remind me of Gene Simmons, a cool combination if I may say so. Next up is the powerful, "Civilized Worm", with it's "Hooch" like drum intro that segues into a mid tempo guitar riff that gives off a "Queen", vibe, a real emphasis on the twin vocals with this track that really kicks it up a notch toward the second half of the song. Twin drum wizardry closes this epic of a song. " History of Drunks", is another mid tempo song with catchy lyrics and twin vocals that caters to the Big Business element on this album. "Rat Faced Granny", should be a favorite in concerts, with Buzz putting his powerful voice to good use and with lyrics that are sure to be chanted along with the band anytime they perform this fast paced track live. Some more awesome twin drum work closes this song. "The Hawk", sounds unlike anything the Melvins have done previously. The vocals and the drum work are without a doubt the highlights of the song and perhaps the album as a whole. "You've Never Been Right", is a track that can be described in one word: drums. At this point the album slows down with the song "A History of Bad Men" the song has been said to resemble Night Goat, but who cares? I don't think it does that much. There is a lot going on in this song that keeps me from dwelling on this. From the percussion to the vocals, this song is awesome and will surely be a concert favorite. I want to mention that the lyrics are great as well. "Mechanical Bride", is a slow song that draws from the Gluey Porch Treatments to Bullhead era with its churning guitar riffs and powerful drum pounding. The vocals are great on this one too. This is one treat of a song that might inspire nostalgia for this particular time in the Melvins' storied musical career. The album closes with A Vast, Filthy Prison; a song that would not be out of place on the album The Bootlicker, a point that brings to mind that the bass playing sounds as if Kevin Rutmanis had a hand in performing this song.

In sum, this is yet another enjoyable and solid release. It's a blend of everything great about the Melvins and leaves me feeling very optimistic about future releases from this line-up.

I was bad and downloaded it shortly after it leaked but I bought it today at Best Buy!  I have never seen ANY Melvins albums in that store but they get two copies.  One for me and one for my friend.

After the first listen, which was about a month ago, I didn't care for it all that much.  I didn't hate it at all but I thought it wasn't quite on par with everything else they did.  About 50 listens later I think it's quite possible that this is my favorite Melvins album.  It's way too hard to choose one favorite but this is the one album that I keep listening to over and over again.  I've listened to this album 3 times in one day on more than one occasion.  It's very rare when I do that with any album.

What more can be said?  This is one of the best albums I've ever heard.  It's amazing that after 20 years they keeping getting BETTER!  The Melvins are not human.

Another diamond in their crown-a must have that shows that their evolving yet even more with great music that they seem to challenge themselfs with year after year.
When I first heard them years ago in the early 80's I knew they were bound for greatness. And I love them even more now for always keeping their music in the shadow of commercializm even though we all know they could be the hottest and most well known band around if they wanted to.Much respect for always following their own path and making great music, without having to wallow in the shit of the public limelight.

here's my review again, from my old (a)sa reviews thread:

Great reviews guys.  I highly agree with the Stoner Witch comparisons, especially in the since of the LP sounding like one big song after a couple of listens (hey, what's not to adore about drop D?).  It's not as well rounded songwise as to present a little bit of everything that the mighty Melvins are capable of (like say Houdini), but therein lies it's beauty.  It actually might be the most concentrated LP that they've ever done in terms of keeping the LP's "point" intact, this side of perhaps Ozma.  Even Stoner Witch had the sonic freakouts that this doesn't have.  All in all a fantastic LP with not a second of your time wasted, even though to my ears, it sounds like they banged some of these songs out quite quickly.  Sometimes, that's a real good thing.

so Igor it today. i waited until i got the real CD before i listened to it. trust me it was hard to not just download it. but anyhow it was a great adventure getting that puppy.
so i've lived in san francisco for three years and today i finally had my first real bike ride here. i was scared. coming from minneapolis where there are not four lane one ways, and not to mention insanely steep hills.
so i was suppose to work at noon but when i showed up that all change, i ended up working at 7pm. so since i was there i proceded (i'm sorry my spelling is bad) to get fucked up (i work at a bar) so after a couple of drinks and alot of the sticky icky i decide what a perfect time for a bike ride. so i talk to one of my bosses and got money from her to get a copy for the jukebox and then one for me.
so i jump on the bike all of a sudden i realize "man i'm fucked up" but at that point it was to late i was already on the road and dammit i'm on a mission. so i ride up market to tower records, well they're going out of business so of course they didn't have it. so i figure fuck it i'm close enough to amoeba so i'll go there. well amoeba is in the upper haight (those not familiar it where haight and ashbury is, well it's basically where the hippy shit started, now it's all horrible trendy shit, i hate going up there) so anyway upper haight is called "upper" because you have to go up this huge hill to get there. so i figure i'll take the wiggle which is a bike path up the hill, you kinda "wiggle" your way up. but i didn't know the exact route. but anyway i only had to get of once to walk up a hill, and it was only a block, not bad for a lazy smoker.
so i finally make it to amoeba, now this place is huge and slightly overwhelming, especially when your really stoned and slightly drunk.  so it was no monkey business and i go straight for "m" in the rock section, and it took me forever to find it,(the "m's" go into the "p's" in a weird way plus is was also a little retarded), but after awhile i found it,yanked two copy's a go straight to the counter, reeking of booze and very redeyed oh and i forgot to mention that i was wearing the happy halloween bitch shirt so i can just imagine what the guy was thinking about me, especially when i asked him to ring them up separately not thinking that the receipt would have shown both of them separate. did i mention that i'm an idiot? so anyway i jump on the bike and it's all downhill from there which was nice but also alittle scary just cause you get going so fast. so i go back to the bar drop of their copy and then headed home.
once i got home i just couldn't contain myself any longer, i had to hear this. so i proceed to make out with my bong and popped it in to the ole xbox and cranked it.
the wait was definitely worth it, there is something to be said when you listen to something that you have impatiently been waiting for, with the cd case in one hand and the bong in the other. i'm glad i didn't cheat and downloaded it first. so after all this you're probably wondering "well does he fucking like it or what" and my respones is "what do you think", after only hearing it twice i fucking love it. i definitely agree that it is one of their most straight forward albums, but it's still the melvins and i think it's the perfect follow up to h.a.t., i love jareds vocals, it just makes it sound epic ya know like true fucking rock n roll. there's even parts of it that make me think of gene simmons, with the two of them together. the double drumming was done very tastefully. civilized worm has been stuck in my head all day.
i love this album.
now i just have to wait until nov. 29th to see them, but just like this c.d. i'm sure it will be well worth the wait.

2002's Hostile Ambient Takeover was a watershed moment in an already long and varied career. The psychedelia and stretching for new sounds that began with Stoner Witch, Stag and Honky was combines with the full-fledged metal onslaught of Maggot and the enhanced embrace of melody on The Bootlicker. In retrospect, the four year wait between HAT and (A) Senile Animal probably represents the most fertile growth period the band has ever had. The releases put forth between HAT and ASA embrace the celebrate the Melvins' past, as well as try some collaborations that contributed to the bands seemingly new-found energy and maturity. Here's a quick re-cap of what has been released since the monumental HAT.

2003 -
26 Songs: A definitive re-release of the band's debut, originally released as a 6 song 7" in 1986 on C/Z records, re-released as an 8 song 12" and 10 song CD in 1991, long oop.

Melvinmania: A European only comp comprising the tightest and most popular tunes from the band's most commercially successful period, 1993-1996 on Atlantic Records. Although unauthorized by the band, Warner still had the rights to put this out, which prevents it from being sloughed off as a bootleg.

2004 -
Neither Here Nor There: The Melvins celebrate their 20 years in the business with a beautiful coffee-table art book, with contributions from not only the band's artwork but random art and writings from friends of the Melvins. A career-spanning comp hand-picked by Buzzo himself, including their first officially released songs on some K-Records cassette comps in 1984. The comp is decent, but the tracks are not as varied in style as some of the full-length albums can be in terms of musical variety.

Pigs of the Roman Empire (collaboration with Lustmord): This album caused some controversy. Many claimed it a stroke of genius, with the Melvins sonic onslaught combining with the dark ambiance of Lustmord into a towering work of creepy evil. Others felt the album was too obviously split down the middle between the ambient and the rock, and that the rock tracks felt weak and re-hashed. This album took awhile to grow on me. The ambiance wins out over the rock in many cases, and it has a late-night chill out/headphone vibe. It is also their darkest work, the album just convulses with cold and evil decay.

Never Breathe What You Can't See (collaboration with Jello Biafra): Melvins return to their hardcore roots by helping Jello come up with his first studio album of music in a long time. A few songs sound pretty generic, but on others Buzzo, Dale and Kevin really outdo themselves by laying down thick slabs of Black Flag riffage that punks, metalheads and stoners can all appreciate. It's obviously Jello's show, but he sure had good taste in finding a new backing band and the Melvins obviously didn't just job this one out but really put some effort into these gems (Caped Crusader, Enchanted Thoughtfist, Dawn of the Locusts).

2005 -
Mangled demos from 1983: The original line-up of Buzzo, Lukin and Dillard finally gets pulled out of bootleg obscurity and given a official release. Buzzo's liner notes are hilarious, especially when he's talking about Kurt from Metal Church. The music shows a young garage band from the middle of nowhere combining hardcore and Kiss to invent grunge. Also included are the Melvins' first radio appearance in 1983 for the Aberdeen Elks Christmas show, and a nice piece of found audio of the stoned teenagers (complete with bong hits in the background) arguing over vodka and french fries. A real treat for the obsessive fan.

Sieg Howdy! (collaboration with Jello Biafra): The odds and sods follow up to Never Breathe, this album is heavier and funnier and looser than the first. It includes a cover of the Alice Cooper prog-metal classic 'Halo of Flies,' a mind-meltingly extended psycho take on 'The Lighter Side of Global Terrorism (reminiscent of the Melvins' classic cover the Wipers' 'Youth of America'), 4 new originals, an updated live version of the DK nugget 'California Uber-Alles,' and 3 remixes of Never Breath tunes by Dalek, Al Jourgenson and the Deaf Nephews. More satisfying and fun than the first go-around. Also the swan song of recently fired bassist Kevin Rutmanis, who joined the band in 1998 and debuted on The Maggot.

2006-
Houdini Live 2005-A Live History of Gluttony and Lust: The ATP festival in England asked the Melvins to perform 1993's Houdini live all the way through. With temporary bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Trio Convulsant) in the line-up, the band decided that since they went to the trouble of re-learning the songs, they might as well record it and put it out. The band really freshens up the old material, and it sounds more lively than it did on the original. Dunn's bass playing is fantastic, he finds subtle harmonic nuances to many of the songs that were not exploited by Lorax on the original. Set Me Straight is now combined with a cover of Cream's almost forgotten gem 'Deserted Cities of the Heart.' The album was recorded live in a warehouse and performed in front of an invitation only audience, hence the lack of crowd noise and the unusually clean sonic clarity that is a rarity on many live recordings.

Now comes the new Melvins line-up, Buzz and Dale teaming up with Coady and Jared from the powerhouse duo Big Business. Two young men playing with their older and wiser heroes who wisely told them that they must keep Big Business going if you want to keep your gig with us. Two drummers and triple vocals abound on the first Melvins album since 2002 that is no a comp, re-release, re-recording, old demos or a collaboration.

(A) Senile Animal track by track review:
The Talking Horse - Blast off, here we go! This beat is complicated, I am reminded of Good times Bad Times of Zep I due to these beautifully complicated beats. The riffs keep changing, and we are in a smooth ride for a few seconds until we have an anthemic Buzzo cascading down from witch mountain.....then the riff gets faster......these drums remind me of Zappa, which is a good thing. This song makes me want to break windows and then ponder the intrinsic complication of a 3 minute song with 5 parts. Even when the melvins aren't doing psychedelia they are so fucking complex.......

Blood Witch - What a noggin' nodding groove, the bastard son of Page Hamilton and the Bloated Pope with more double tracked vocals that make me wanna do good and bad, what's this, another complicated lil' drum breakdown. I wanna destroy and plant flowers at the same time.

Civilized Worm -

Definitely, it IS that bassline! It has been mentioned here before too a few times, but I think the bass line Night Goat is better known or more popular to most people than the bass riff from The Man...

I bought the original A Senile Animal first today, and the first thing that struck me was that the sound was FAAAAAAAAR better then the thing I
downloaded and, humphr, humphr, ladadada.... I`ts almost listening to the record the first time. I don`t understand those that only settle for burnt editions,
the real thing both sounds and feels much more genuine. Tonight I`m on a huge Melvins-rush. I`ve had a mediocre week, but A Senile Animal has lifted me
up skyhigh. Juuuuuuhuuuuuu!!!!

Well I finally picked it up now. And I am glad I didnt download it because When I download albums I usually am doing other things on my computer, and not paying full attention, and then I write the album off as boring for not holding my attention. Anyway, this album is much more straight up then the other albums in my opinion. Which is great, I love the Bass tones Jarred has, its so refreshing and pretty innovative if you ask me. When I saw the Melvins a few weeks ago they played Civilized Worm, and A History of Bad Men. And I remember getting a boner because it was so awesome. And Civilized Worm was the song me and Jarred traded goofy evil looks. The triple vocals are awesome. The album is awesome, I dont know where it ranks as my favorite albums this year, I mean this has been an amazing year for music, Devin Townsend Band, Mastodon, Melvins. Awesome year.

Okay, so I haven't got the album yet (I probably will tomarrow). I've listened to it like 5 times through now though noreces's link though, and it fucking kicks ass! I'm blaring it right now.

NP-The Talking Horse- fuck, the ending is so good! I love the part with the vocals and the break with the go-go bell percussion stuff.
NP-Blood Witch-cool song, especially the ending. The song reminds me of The Bloated Pope. I like the creativity with the time signature stuff. The ending is pretty confusing. I still can't quite figure it out! I like the part when Dale is playing the ice bell (I think that's what it's called) cymbal, and Coady does the hi-hats.
NP-Civiilized Worm-This song is really, really good... It's just beautiful. I especially love the guitar crunchiness and the harmonized vocals. It's cool when it just stops and comes back again...great guitar solo. This song elicits the same feelings when I listen to Skin Horse, Up The Dumper, etc.-it's just such a beautiful song. And the ending is really rocking, especially in the video from ConcertFreak. Nice tom outro, I like the feedback that comes in at the very end. I also love the lyrics to this song.
A History Of Drunks-I REALLY like this song too, and love the lyrics. I'm gonna try posting them later. This song is just beautiful like Civilized Worm. I know that it may seem a strange adjective to use, but it sums it up great for me. just beautiful music... I love the guitar part during the clapping.
Rat Faced Granny-fucking kicks ass, greating ending, great Buzzo vocals, ausome drums at the end. Buzz is just great in this song. nothing more to say.....
The Hawk-pretty cool. I like how it kind of twists and turns all over the place. really catchy, cool drums/guitar, the "hey there mr. nightmare" parts are fucking ausome
You've Never Been Right-really great song, I especially love how this one is arraigned. just songwriting genius. Ausome guitar solo-I love Buzz's choices of notes, great evil riffing, the outro is set up so great, and the final part with the drums is so cool. I like how they drop off that beat during the singing. The ending reminds me of the concept from the ending of Mombius Hibachi, only so much better
A History Of Bad Men- one of my first thoughts when I first listened to it-Woah, you guys weren't kidding when you said the bass line was similar to Night Goat and The Man With The Laughing Hand Is Dead. I was almost mad, I thought it sounded so similar! Repeated listenings showed how cool this song is though. Very evil sounding. I love the lyrics on this one as well. The "dire, it's fleeting" part is really cool, especially when it slows down at the end to go back in the main riff. The drum intro is really cool with one drummer playing the beat, and the other embellising it with cymbals and the drum roll at the end. The ending of this song is so captiviating.
The Mechanical Bride-man, oh, man, ausome heaviness! This song is also intoxicating like the previous one. Great vocal "wierdness". I'm kind of reminded of Hag Me meets Claude or Crayfish, meets I don't know what else.
A Vast Filithy Prison-This is a nice song. It's got a very pretty and even somber quality to it. I love the intro and outro. It stands out as being different from all the previous tracks, and is a great way to end the album.

And of course I love the double drum and triple vocal interplay.
I am thorughly impressed with this album. It kicks so much ass to be a Melvins fan. I just love this band so much.

Hopefully, I'll actually go out and buy the damn thing tomarrow

My first impression was WOW - this whole disc is fucking amazing, but not as good as H.A.T. I can see that changing after a few more listens. They did it right, planning the tour before the album came out. All these distinct musical moments from the show are coming back to me from last week. The next Melvins release should be a live DVD from this tour. Anyone see a pro-film crew yet? Maybe the last dates in the hometown will.

Yay! The Melvins go pop...again. I love this new direction. I'm only halfway through my first spin of the record, but it sounds to me like the pop knack of their Bullhead era stuff, fused with the sort of direction Big Business have taken. The track Rat Faced Granny might as well be a Big Business song...

It's been a long wait since HAT, but I think it's been worth it to have the Melvins back on form. Glorious. Looking forward to the end of year Camden gig, if it's still going ahead.

Incidentally, hello to anyone that might remember me.:)

Hey Vinney,

It's been an intense 6 months for me - I had my finals and dissertation to do and then started working about 4 days after my last exam. Since then I've graduated and been doing freelance work up and down the country over the summer. I've only just settled down into a full-time job, but I've had little time for much else of late...been so out of touch. It took my brother to remind me that Senile Animal was actually out...

How've you been, chap?

Aquarius Records:

MELVINS  "A Senile Animal"  (Ipecac)  cd  15.98
Hard to believe the Melvins are still around. And that they STILL don't suck. After like, what... 200 albums? Equally hard to believe that they have somehow morphed from one of the most difficult and gloriously difficult bands to ever sign to a major label (outside of the Butthole Surfers) into purveyors of super kick ass, head banging stoner Stooges stomp rock. But hell, we're not complaining...
And who cares if this is release #1 or #201. Or how many bassists they've pile up in their "morgue" (like Spinal Tap was with drummers), it still packs a mighty wallop, and gives us just what we've come to love and adore and expect from the Melvins, almost too much so, but more on that in a minute.
A Senile Animal is the first "true" Melvins album since 2004's Pigs of the Roman Empire teamup with infrasound specialist Lustmord, and sees the Melvins circa 2006, aka Buzz & Dale, join forces with the equally chaotic duo of Jared & Cody, otherwise known as Big Business (Jared also ex-Karp).
Together as the (new) Melvins they are bigger and badder than ever. With the power of THREE vocalists, TWO bass players, and most excitingly, a DOUBLE DRUM attack, a sort of hybrid drum kit manned by two different drummers!!
We haven't seen it yet, and heard they share cymbals or hit some of the same drums, or maybe hold hands while rocking out, but however they get it done, it WORKS. BIG TIME!
This record will definitely hit the spot for those of you craving more of that heavy / catchy sludge pop, found on past Melvins classics like Houdini or Stoner Witch. In fact, a lot of A Senile Animal sounds like it was just plucked from those very same sessions. Not a bad thing mind you. It's just that some of us, especially after the gorgeous fucked up heavy weirdness of Pigs of the Roman Empire, imagined that the Melvins might have been headed down a much more twisted and fucked up musical path. And while that is not necessarily the case, we're not too disappointed. In fact this disc's got most of us too busy rocking out and banging our heads and air guitaring and flailing wildly about to even notice.
And we sure as heck can't wait to see the crazy drum kit thing everyones talking about, and to have our asses thoroughly kicked by the NEW Melvins, not so much a quintet as much as a POWER-POWER trio! Fuck yeah.

I have been a fan of Karp since around the time I started listening to the Melvins, in 1995, so to me the album is almost like the best Karp album ever. i always thought they were realy similar to the Melvins, even to the point of the hairdos. I think this is the best album since Stag, hands down. The only thing lacking is the superior production that the Atlantic albums had, specifically the drums. I understand they are going for something less huge than Stoner Witch, but the drums sound really dry. Like they recorded them in a closet or something. Otherwise, it's the best Melvins record in ten years. i can't wait to see the new lineup live, since I never got to see Karp. I have seen the Melvins 4 times, but I haven't seen them since before the Crybaby came out, when they were playing a double set with no opener. I am going to see them at the Conservatory in OKC, and the next day, on the "second stage" at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa. These are definitely going to be the smallest shows I have ever seen them at---reminiscent of their pre-Atlantic days. It's going to be awesome, I am sure.

Yay! I now have an actual copy. I say 'actual' because i had a leak. I thought i should admit that. And i know i was one of the main people saying don't download just wait for it to come out and it will be more 'special' etc. I'm an idiot/arsehole/whatever. A hypocrite even. Sorry to anyone who cares.

I did only listen to the leak a total of six times though but i guess that doesn't matter.

From the "heavymetal.about.com" review posted earlier...
QuoteThe album is a nice mix of short, straightforward and catchy songs along with longer, more experimental and unusual tracks.

Experimental? It shows what the Melvins are up against when even this album is called "experimental".  :bs:

Ugh!

canadian release date has been pushed back again. Amazon.ca has it as the 24th of october. End hits(local punk/metal/indie record store) has it as the 31st.

I hope it's released on the 24th but I fear it will only be available for this stoned canadian on the 31st.

on a side note I picked up boris - akuma no uta today and holy shit. record blows my fucking mind.

Anyone has any idea as to why they keep pushing back the release date?

Melvins hate canadians, don't they?  :(

I hear where your coming from rob.  but I don't know if any true melvins officianado would answer the question of "why do you like the melvins?" with "because they are experimental.".

I don't think the loser-fanboys that hang out around here would call the melvins experimental. we (oh shit, I just included myself as a loser fanboy) would probably say the melvins are the melvins.  just as I don't think buzz osborne would say he releases experimental albums.  he would just say he releases melvins albums.   they aren't considered to be any less than or any different than any other melvins release.   the cataloge as a whole encompases the melvins sound.

this is why the melvins are like no other band and the fans are like no other fans.  its a culture in itself.
not "heavy metal" or "rock" or "experimental" or whatever.   its MELVINS.    defying explanation since 1983.

now get your ass out there and buy Collosus of Destiny.

What I really meant is that, of everything the Melvins have released, this must be the most conventional album of all (not that there is anything wrong with that).

It will not hit the shelves until the 27th around here. But Ipecac release dates somehow get pushed back all the time, so I already kind of sadly expected this.
When it finally arrives, I think I will invite the mailwoman to come in for a hot coffee and a ASA listening session.

I'm probably going to write a huge review of this in a little bit, but just one comment right now: The bass line for A History of Bad Men is pretty much exactly the bass line from The Man With the Laughing Hand is dead.

I was listening to The Crybaby last night, I realized the same thing. They're exactly the same! It can't be a coincidence...

I agree highly with Steve.

Anyone who thinks that SA is experimental in any remotely major way, hasn't heard the bulk of the Melvins records....and it's not necessarily their experimentability that makes me like the Melvins so much, more than that, it's the fact that they seem to do whatever the hell the want to do, pretty much never repeat themselves, and constantly put out material that's worth every penny paid for it.

Hey guys, I'm new to this board, but I am a big Melvins fan.  Well, not as big as a lot of you guys, but they do officially rank as my second favorite band (after the Ramones) and I do have about a half dozen of their albums (started with Stoner Witch, my fav has to be the Maggot).

Anyway, my question with the new album is this:  How is the content?  I don't mean if its good or not (I know its good, I've read nothing but praise for it so far, plus its the Melvins!!!), but I mean like swearing, objectionable content, that sort of thing.  I know the Melvins were never really big on that (for which I am thankful), but I generally don't get a CD untill I either know the lyrics or have a good idea of the content level.  I know a lot of the lyrics have been posted on the lyrics board, but I don't think the whole album is there yet.

So I'm asking for your help.  Is there any swearing/other content I should be aware of before buying it?

Thanks.

i'm pretty sure there isn't, al.
unless you object to, "she helping remove the bullets from my leg.  she took the blade -cut them out while i lay bleeding (screaming?)"
it is in a fairly happy sounding song.

Oh, thats no big deal.  Honestly, I'm more concerned with swearing/themes of demonism and or satanism.

But the Melvins were never about the dark, mystic kind of metal.  For which I am happy.

But if the "bullets from my leg" song is the worst on there, I will be picking it up post haste!

Good for you. No, there are no objectionable lyrics on A Senile Animal. The Melvins for the most part do not contain any profanity within their lyrics. I believe that Buzz one time has stated in an interview that he did not want any "ugly" parental advisory stickers on his albums.

Fantastic!  Thanks guys.  I personally prefer when artists try to actually write words for their songs instead of just filling them with swears.

On a side note, would there ever have to be a parental advisory on the Melvins if they're on an indie label?  I don't think Ipecac (or other, similar sized record companies) is bound by those laws, right?

Speaking of "accessable," how about those freakin' handclaps on "A History Of Drunks?!?!"

You know what they remind me of?  The Riverdales, or I guess Screeching Weasel even though I don't really own any SW records.  Just the 60's pop music influenced stuff Ben Weasel always did because it made his music sound more like the Ramones.

You know what I'm all talking about, right?  The part in the middle with the extremely simplistic solo (which now that I think about it is also very Ben Weasel-esque) where its like "clap, clap-clap, clap, clap" (repeat a few times).

Its the first Melvins song I've ever heard where I found myself bobbing my head to the left and to the right, smiling like an idiot.

Which is really new territory for the Melvins.  I never thought a Melvins song would sound really upbeat and happy to me.  But I do believe its a good thing.  Yes, definitely a good thing.

I will occasionally borrow some of my CDs to my 50 year old father (I'm 19, like anyone cares) for his commute to work and back so he can jam to something other than inane radio early morning talk shows, so earlier today I gave him (A) Senile Animal so he could do just that.

I was out raking leaves as he drove in the garage with "The Hawk" just CRANKED!!!  He steps out of his Jeep and says that he listened to it twice over and that he loved it.

He then came in, put it in our stereo and blasted it for our whole household to enjoy, playing "A History Of Drunks" several times while making air guitar type gestures as he's dancing around in our living room.

True story.

Behold... the power of the Melvins.

I couldn't beleive it either.  I mean, he does like some heavy stuff (he really likes AC/DC and Metallica, and I mean early, "Ride The Lightning" style Metallica, not just the "Enter Sandman" type stuff), but I wasn't sure if he'd dig the Melvins or not.

But the new album is very accessable that way.  I know that if I gave him Houdini or Stoner Witch, he'd probably dig the first half, than say it got too weird.

And if I gave him Bullhead, I really don't think he'd make it all the way through Boris.

Although, he did like most of the Maggot (the faster, noise stuff wasn't his cup of tea, even if it did rock my world).

Judge adds caning to killer's jail term
By Iris Maniam

JOHOR BARU: Convicted killer Roslan Imun @ Mon, who admitted to shoving a stick into the anus of a 12-year-old boy and was jailed 20 years by the Sessions Court on Tuesday, was ordered to be given 20 strokes of the rotan.

[...]

Of the 60cm stick Roslan used, only 5cm was protruding from the boy's anus. The other end was protruding under his chest and pressing against his lungs. He had to be operated on and was placed in intensive care for two days.

According to the facts of the case, Roslan had stopped Mohd Shah and asked him to carry a sack of durians on his bicycle before punching him. When he regained consciousness, the boy discovered the stick shoved in his anus.

I feel trapped. I can't stop listening to this album. I mean I have been listening to other stuff like early Tubeway Army/Gary Numan, Faith No More and Mr. Bungle lately but I am always going back to this album ever since I got it. What is going on? It's not a bad feeling at all but I have never to my knowledge ever did this with their other stuff even though I love it. I can listen to say Bullhead and after listening to it maybe not hear it again for a month perhaps but ASA is somehow different.

you can hear the fading notes and cymbals of the prvious song as the next one starts in

If I'd been involved in Production or whatever, I'd probably have got Buzz to change the sound he had on his guitar for Civilised Worm. It's a little too immediate and sounds like it should be in a chugg-chugg number more than the Worm. Something a bit floatier and fadey maybe.

Hey,

Sorry if this has already been asked, but does anyone know what equipment Buzzo used for this album? I'm trying to work out how he gets a specific guitar sound. The best song I can point to is The Hawk for the sound I like, it's a crunchy type guitar effect that reminds me of Adam Jones from Tool, and I love it. Maybe I should try and check out what Adam Jones uses while I'm waiting to see if any of you guys know, I just hope it isn't primarily the guitar he uses, because I'm real stubborn about switching from Fenders.  :P

Hah, I just put The Hawk on again and got the shivers. Fucking awesome sound.

edit : Woops, sorry, typical goddamn newbie. I just found this thread : http://www.themelvins.net/forum/index.php?topic=6966.0

So do you guitar players think is what'll be making that sound? - http://guitargeek.com/gearview/221/

Bah!  I was falling asleep!  More coffee!
I really like ASA; I think of the songs as 'straight ahead rockers' like I'd think of AC/DC as 'straight-ahead-rock' songs.  Live these songs are great, I really loved the mix of songs played on the recent tour.  I haven't listened to the actual album much though; I'll see how they do on constant repeat.
From what I remember the four piece isn't especially noticeable on the albums; but can definitely be heard from recent bootlegs + at live shows.

Your Top 50 on Last.FM tells a different story. I count 6 songs off the New album.   :D
Thats more tracks off a single album than any other melvins album in your top 50

I put Blood Witch into Audacity and lower the tempo by 10%.

edit: It's a really good album. I haven't listened to it in a long time, but I listened to it a few more times and it's wicked good. It's still an amazing Melvins album, although I don't think I can compare it to the old albums. They're so different (but then again, do you really want Melvins to keep releasing the same albums over and over again?)

never.  I just listened to it yesterday.   like with most MELVINS releases.. it takes a level of realization to appreciate.   you have to appreciate the approach of the album.  never go in with expectations with any MELVINS album.   just listen to it and try to understand the mentality of the recording.           only then will you truely see the light.

some people said that the bassline in A History Of Bad Man sounded like the one in Night Goat. They're pretty alike indeed. I dunno if someone already posted this, but the AHOBM bassline and the one in The Man With The Laughing Hand Is Dead are exactly the same, the AHOBM bassline is just a bit faster and distorted. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitchin around about it. I don't think it's a bad thing cuz AHOBM and TMWTLHID are totally different songs.

It's pretty impressive that they can use the exact same bassline for two songs and make the songs sound completely different.

I still love ASA and still think it's one of their best albums.  I've been addicted to the last two songs lately.  They are underrated gems.

Classic.  This album ranks up there with classics like Black Sabbat ST, Paranoid, Led Zeppelin I, Red, etc.  The songwriting is beyond top notch, its epic.  The flow is masterful and solid.  No note is wasted or overstays its welcome.  The 3 last songs are pure epic, monolithic bliss.  Civilized Worm is among the 10 best rock songs ever recorded in my book.   I'd say Stag is still their best record overall, but (A) Senile Animal has more punch.  I keep wondering what the public's reaction would have been had this been their major label debut in 1993.

I finally got a copy of this on vinyl. I got the 4 LP Blue and Yellow copies with all the fancy drawings.  I was surprised to only pay $60 on Ebay for one in perfect condition. How much were these new? Couldn't have been much less than $40...I don't know much about Hydra Head records but6 they take packaging to the next level. All in all this is a pretty solid album to me, the standout tracks being "Civilized Worm" and "History Of Bad Men"....in fact I am hooked on the History of bad men song and can't stop singing it, been stuck in my head for the past week.

Question for the record nerds: Normally I always poly bag each LP and store the LP in the sleeve in the bag behind the record to avoid ring wear on the cover. Im thinking this set is really made to put then in the assigned slots and I should just chill....or should I store them separately?  (Holy shit I am a huge nerd/spazz for even asking that! lol)

It only does that part that's similar to night goat two times in the progression, then it does something else for two measures before the bass line repeats.  It's not night goat really, you guys are way over analyzing this shit.

No I didn't realize that until I read posts on this board saying the bass lines were the same. I then listened to the two songs and realized that was true. I don't if I would have ever made that connection if I hadn't had read that here. My initial reaction to A History Of Bad Men when I listened to it for the first time, was that it reminded me of Night Goat (a lot of people were saying that too).

THOUGHTS:

I was not that into this album when it came out but I was not yet a fanatic.

Now I see its genius. While "A History of Bad Men" and "Civilized Worm" are probably the most representative songs on the record it's "A History of Drunks" and "A Vast Filthy Prison" and "Blood Witch" and "You've Never Been Right" that I find myself anticipating the most.

But talking about the songs is far less interesting than talking about the album as a whole. I just listened to "Pet Sounds" the other day. I dare say Buzz is the Brian Wilson of the electric age.

Jared's voice has a greater range especially in the high registers which allows Buzz to write songs he simply wouldn't have been able to perform earlier (think of how hard he was reaching in "Hog Leg"). In context it's amazing for the primary songwriter and singer in a band to suddenly put himself in the backseat on half the album just because the new bass player can hit a high note. It is proof to me that Buzz has the utmost respect for his records and that his ethos is true.

Secondly this album stands as a landmark now (with three and a half albums worth of continuing proof) that those drum parts Dale has been playing were never random. When you listen to Bullhead for example it is easy enough to fall into the trap of convincing yourself that the wool is being pulled over the listener's eyes and ears. But when you hear Coady and Dale sync up so tightly on pretty much everything they play it sheds the light of deliberate intention on the 25 albums of Dale's drums previous.

I love this record, and its continuation in Nude, Bride, and Bulls. In that it is an experiment in band dynamics has probably made the record one of the least experimental in terms of avant garde approaches (my first listen I probably dismissed it as a classic rock nostalgia album). But there are literally dozens of classic Melvins riffs throughout. The difference is that the songs are not relying on the riffage, rather showcasing them at the appropriate time.

Also the FBI warning on the CD label is amazing.

Sat in the car park listening to the first two songs before driving away. After Talking Horse I was like..."fuck yeah" then put in on a proper setup. Great album from start to finish.

Didn't leave the car's stacker for like a year .8)

I know POTRE is sacred around here, but I was relieved to hear this was a hard ass rock record from start to finish. Once I had it on a tape with Nude With Boots, I liked NWB better overall, but this is one hell of an album.

Senile Animal turns ten today.

Couldn't resist writing a piece celebrating the anniversary. It's one of my all-time favorites.

i have been playing along to this record for years.  it's fun as a drummer to pick out and play along with dale or cody.  by far my favorite album of the three big business records.

Way better than listening to Choco Plumbing on loop for 40 minutes.

Truly a badass album. Top tier material from the band for sure. Probably their very last awesome from start to finish record.

Will Melvins ever release anything this good again? Probably not but i'd absolutely love to be proved very wrong.

Remind you of a particular song on (A) Senile Animal? I don't know much about Ministry but tell me someone else noticed this.

similar, yes. most people say this sounds like Night Goat. A History Of Bad Men to me is exactly the same riff as this one.

I definitely hear it in the song about the deceased gentleman holding the amused playing cards. Night Goat, though? No musician or discerning fan would ever hear that. Inside the music is an entire world that some people don't seem to have access to.

I always wonder what (A)SA would be like if Kevin had stayed. I think it would have been even BETTER!! Also i must say if you are introducing a new listener to Melvins for the first time i believe this is the perfect album to use. It's not got much weirdness, it's concise and solid throughout plus features a collection of cool, fairly accessible tracks that give you good impression of what the rocking side of the band is like.
