Wow. I don't know where to start.

Okay, the show took place at this old WWII bunker that turned out to have a really nice place for shows on the 4th floor. Although I already saw Melt Banana there, it was a different room, bigger and way more comfortable. I have to say this might be my favorite venue in Hamburg so far. Well, I headed towards the merch table and was pleased to see the 'See You In Hell' shirts. I also got the Big Biz tour EP III and the Porn/Merzbow collab. So if anyone's hoping to get a copy of the Tour Ep on this Europe tour you might be lucky. No trick and riddle book though. Unfortunately they didn't have the posters for the show either;  you know, the one with the owl. I was hoping to get one of those.. Instead, they had posters from 2007 and stuff. I asked the merch guy (who was British as far as I can tell, anyone got an idea who it is?) why they didn't have them and he said that they didn't get them in time. Bummer. So I bought an older one with a skunk on it. After spending some cash I went to the stage and got a nice place right up front.

Tim Moss got on stage and messed around with his noise arsenal.. it was really loud and intense. Dale and Coady followed and started beating the shit out of their drums. They blew me away, literally, since Coadys kick drum was constantly blowing wind right at me. It was unbelievable to watch Dale play, and it was just the beginning. I often found myself staring like a madman, the drumming was so fucking intense. Dale even stared back at times which made it almost creepy but really cool nonetheless. It was a nice beginning for the show.

There was a short break between Porn and the Biz, but then Jared and Coady finally stepped on stage and started with Hands Up. I don't know the order of the set list, but they played Start Your Digging, two new songs (the one where he sings something like cats, mice, that's what I hear) which sounded great. Also Grounds for Divorce, Just As The Day Was Dawning, and The Drift; no Cold Lunch unfortunately. Send Me A Postcard would have been too great. Dale filled in on guitar and did a really good job. I wish their set would have been longer, but I guess I can't expect that; Of course they kicked ass nonetheless, as usual. What an awesome band, they blow me away all the time.

Another short break, and Buzzo gets on stage. The whole crowd was cheering and going crazy and Buzz stood there smiling which was really cool. The new guitar looks beautiful in person. Then they started with Nude With Boots. The drums are something you have to witness live. Of course, not only the drums - everything sounded so fucking good. I have to say the crowd was really cool, they were into it but there was no stupid behaviour like climbing on stage etc. I didn't even notice a lot of moshing, maybe when they played Honey Bucket, but still no one was acting stupid and everyone had a blast. They continued with Dog Island and Dies Iraea. Civilized Worm made me feel really good and I've only seen it live once. Kicking Machine. The Nude With Boots material sounds great live, it doesn't compare. There were a couple of people who seemed to be digging the NWB material more. At least that's how it seemed but it doesn't matter. After Kicking Machine they played... the one and only.... EYE FLYS.  Sweet Jesus. I'm so glad I got to hear it live. Of course I recorded it.  The Suicide in Progress and Billy Fish combo could never bore me. I still love both songs. Then it was time for some Stag, with Tipping the Lion.. I recorded it as well because I felt I had to capture some STAG.  Honey Bucket, Blood Witch and the (A)SA trilogy were next. Fast and heavy; good stuff. By the way, I was somewhat dissappointed to see that Jared wasn't sporting a captain outfit or something like that.. nothing.   Next up was what turned out to be 'My Generation'. I'm glad I didn't watch any videos beforehand so it was a nice little surprise. I wonder how many people actually figured out what song it was.. seriously, the only thing that gave it away were the vocals. Great Melvinesque version of the song which blended into History of Bad Men. I almost forgot about it and was reminded what a monstrous song it is. For a brief moment Buzz actually seemed somewhat moved when they went into the Star Spangled Banner. Ahh the harmonies. Last song, and a highlight: BORIS. The drumming was heavier than ever. So intense. And I sang along and enjoyed it. I really did. The second part was different, all of them sang. And as Boris faded out, everyone left the stage. It depressed me to see that two people somewhere next to me got Crovers sticks. Again, no sticks for me. That was the end of the show. THANK YOU MELVINS. Hamburg loves you.  If anyone actually read all of this - imaginary karma for you!

INTERVIEW: The Melvins
The Melvins do not hold back

As forerunners of the slow, primal guitar style that eventually spread through heavy music like wildfire, legendary trio the Melvins managed to outlast many of the bands it influenced. The band's continued relevance can be attributed to its insistence on experimenting with its sound, often resulting in avant-garde noise. On the heels of its 25th album (depending how you count), the expatriate Seattle group comes to Rochester transformed into a double-drummer quartet, with the addition of the founding members of Seattle duo Big Business (now a three-piece that also opens the show). As City discovered over two recent chats, bandleader King Buzzo (nee Buzz Osborne) does not hold back, waxing polemic on a number of topics and freely naming names as he skewers his musician peers. An edited transcript of the interview follows.

City: When did the band first start to have an experimental streak?

King Buzzo: I'd say almost from day one. I was never afraid of experimenting. I was into bands that were doing all kinds of wacky stuff. The problem I've always had, especially with the avant-garde, is that they have more rules than anybody else. I've always thought we had really good taste, and that people should like our music.

But you also never expected to sell a lot.

I never expected it, but should it happen? Yes. Will it happen? No. We signed to Atlantic Records for three records, but that was a long time ago. I never thought it would work from record one, but we were like, "Sure, we'll do it; why not? Their money's just as green as anybody else's. We'll take this weird ride."

And they didn't really interfere?

They didn't interfere at all.

That's not the horror story one would expect from signing to a major label.

The people that say that kind of stuff happens are wrong. They signed up for it, they're the ones who took the money. You got screwed by a label? Waaaaah. If I was working at a record label with one of those bands, I'd shelve

What were your favorite albums in high school?
In 1978, I was in 8th grade and I was already into the Sex Pistols, The Ramones and a bunch of other English punk bands. I got into these bands through Creem Magazine. Before that I was into The Who (still a big fan), Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Led Zep, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, David Bowie, Kiss, Black Sabbath etc

[Green Day? Fuck that!]

I recently came across this interview with Buzzo in the German magazine "VISIONS". Unfortunately it was printed in German, so I had to translate it back to English etc, which sucked a bit. I tried my best though.

Tom Morello had a cameo appearance in "Iron Man", although you would fit better into a comic book adaptation.

Apparently no one wants to see me in the movies, although I love movies - especially action movies. Charles Bronson would be my biggest influence as an actor. But in fact I'm quite happy not to be an actor. It's not my job.

Nevertheless visual art plays an important role in the Melvins. You often have embellished your sound with odd music videos.

That's true. We even once put one of your VISIONS- writers in a pig costume.

That was Carsten la Tendresse, it's been a while.

Twelve years. At that time we realized that Germans lack the sense of sarcasm. Well, at least they don't have the same as Americans. So we took Carsten, removed the German humor from his brain and implanted a sense of sarcasm. Like aliens.

You never know when you guys are being serious.

See? You have much yet to learn! (laughter)

You once called Gregory Dark, the director of the clip for "Bar X-The Rocking M", a grandmaster of coincidence. How interesting are coincidences for the Melvins nowadays?

Very interesting. A big advantage is that you don't have to ask yourself all the time whether you thought of everything. We're open to all sorts of coincidences. You have to make room for some smaller mishaps, otherwise they don't happen.

Did something of that kind happen on your new album?

I'd say yes, but I can't remember where exactly something happened. I know for sure that we're extremely happy with it.

Vocals have never been as important as on "Nude With Boots". A mishap?

No. I can tell you that it was intended. We now have the proper personnel to do something like this.

How do you communicate via the music? Journalists often fail at trying to do so.

It is difficult. We've been together for over 24 years now, and the communication is so smooth that you don't really notice how it works anymore. Still it isn't easy, even at this point. My songs demand a lot from musicians, since I demand a lot from myself too.

You have two drummers now. Does this idea derive from the Fantomas Melvins Big Band era?

Well, maybe indirectly. Drumming is so important in our band that I sometimes think about it as much as about the rest. There's a lot more you can do with two drummers.

You're known for excessive touring, whereas other musicians of your age often moan about the constant travelling. For example Kerry King of Slayer.

Touring is the only thing that has always worked very well for us. Tours kept us alive and never disappointed. And Kerry King has always been an idiot.

Any advice for him, amongst Kings?

Play good shows! One third of our shows are totally amazing. One third is pretty good. And the last third pretty much sucks.

So how do you handle the last third?

We don't take it personally. Sometimes you have trouble with the gear or someone is sick. Then we just think of the other two thirds... or our good reputation! (laughter)

"Nude With Boots" is after "Houdini" the second album with a dog. Where does your obsession with puppies, children, swans, flowers and other cute things come from?

Well, our band is called Melvins, which sounds pretty uncommitted. A band called Slayer certainly doesn't play gay electropop, right? With Melvins, you never know what you get. We wanted to do this with the covers as well. At first sight they look friendly, but upon closer look you're not so sure anymore. As for dogs, they're man's best friend and treat us better than some people do.

Do you believe in the classification "cat person and dog person"?

I've heard of it. We have three dogs, which should clearly classify us. But the truth is, my wife is allergic to cat hairs.

At the beginning you were titled a punk band, later it was the prototype of grunge...

... and now they call it punk again, right? The Melvins stand for rock in its purest form. Rock minus crap. That's exactly what I liked about punk rock at that time. That's were our roots lie. Or call it Captain Beefheart crossed with Heavy Metal. However I don't know what to understand as punk rock these days anymore. Green Day? Then we're the Antichrist of punk. All this pop punk is ridiculous and annoying me. Fuck that! They have more in common with Bruce Springsteen than with bands like Crass.

When was the last time you were impressed by a band?

I love The Horrors, because I believe what they do. It's the best thing you can say about a musician: You believe him. Do I believe Green Day? No I don't.

When do you think has a band made it in the music business?

When they don't pay the rent anymore.

So you're judging by financial conditions? Then we need to talk about Green Day again.

Not only...but partly. It depends on what you do with the money. You can throw it out of the window for bullshit and drive through Hollywood in a Maserati. Or you can use it to be your own boss.

Why aren't you on the latest Venomous Concept album?

Unfortunately I didn't have time. Nevertheless everyone should buy the album! (laughter)
Speaking of time, I think we ought to stop now.

One last thing: At what age did you make peace with your hair?

Quite early already. When you realize that something can't be changed, you should soon start to be proud of it.

I drawed those myself and I really tried to get as close as possible.
