what songs have you listened to and thought would be awesome if covered by the Melvins? Or just what songs in general would you like to see them cover?
I think a Melvins version of Seasick by the Jesus Lizard would be really cool.
black flag - my war

the melvins should become a Who cover band, if only for one album. my head would explode if i ever heard dale and coady tackle keith's parts on "happy jack" and "a quick one while he's away." buzz and jared harmonizing on the vocal parts, too, would be great.
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man...i can only imagine that one with the current line-up.
Black Flag - Annihilate This Week
Mean Machine - The Cramps
i'm pretty happy with the songs they covered already so my wish list is short.
an AC/DC mash up.......
Under My Wheels and a really, intensely heavy slower version of Black JuJu to finish off that era of Alice Cooper...
Yes, to anything Beatles. Even better if Coady took full drumming duties on these songs in a certain part of a very special set and Dale joined Buzz on guitar!!! Especially: Sun King to The End from Abbey Road (in order), One After 909, And Your Bird Can Sing, Happiness is a Warm Gun, and I, Me, Mine.
Syd Barrett - Effervescing Elephant

If they did Beatles I could totally picture them covering Wild Honey Pie and Blue Jay Way. Personally, I'd like to hear them do more songs in the vein of their cover of Ramones' Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World. That's gotta be their best cover, hands down.
Here's a video of Torche doing a cover of I Want You (She's So Heavy).

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Spellbound
Thin Lizzy: Jailbreak
As for Beatles covers, I'd like to hear a Melvins version of Helter Skelter or The Night Before.. and many more.
King Crimson - One More Red Nightmare
Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
The Byrds - What's Happening?!?!
Cinnamon Girl
I reckon they could turn 'Dropout Boogie' by Captain Beefheart into the filthiest thing ever. Ever.

Damaged is classic, but not the best Black Flag album. It's a toss up between My War & Slip It In. It was Ginn's band. He took them into sludgy metal territory. So you might as well say Ginn blows too.

That would be funny, since Boris have never covered any Melvins tunes despite the supposed massive influence (It shows mainly in everything up to Amplifier Worship.). In one interview, a dude asked them if they ever tried playing Honey Bucket, with the band saying they were no good at playing it.
If they had to do a Boris track, I'd like to see them do VOMITSELF. The vocals, what little bit of them, are perfect for Buzz to trip out on and the riff/drone/one chord/whatever with some of that double-drums added would kill.

I think you could hand the Melvins any song and you'd have no idea what the end result would come out like. Look at the Green Manalishi, or Sacrifice - completely different animals to the original versions. In that sense, it's very hard to pick a song that I'd like to hear them cover.

God that is tailor made for Melvins.
i put on my scratch acid - s/t ep and it was on 33rpm instead of 45rpm. First track Cannibal starting playing and it was THUNDEROUSLY EERIE and would make an INCREDIBLE Melvins cover song.
So thats my vote

Neil Young - Cortez the Killer
Wipers - Potential Suicide or Over the Edge
Yardbirds - Heart full of soul

Heard this on the FM radio today, and immediately thought that the Melvins could fucking own this with Jared handling the vocals. I first had 2112 on 8-track in the early '80s, and later on cassette, which I should bust out. I don't listen to Rush much anymore, but the old stuff like this still stands up.

i put on my scratch acid - s/t ep and it was on 33rpm instead of 45rpm. First track Cannibal starting playing and it was THUNDEROUSLY EERIE and would make an INCREDIBLE Melvins cover song.
So thats my vote
Scratch Acid - Cannibal (slowed)
some others
Tom Waits - I don't wanna grow up
Neil Young - Cortez the Killer
I think they could do a number on el espectro or mess by SA. Ramones covered the Waits song.
I think you're right on the $ with Cortez. They could give it an eerie dark tone, more so than it already has. With weird extended slow "solo's" thru out they would have a lot of wiggle room. I could see them doing it in a similar vein as the bootlicker tracks.
=P~ Salivate*

Seriously, even silly list pop can sound good in a heavier format? Or am I totally wrong? Kill me if I am, )))(((!

No, i
think i agree. It's just that 'Common People' is such a horrible tune that even if (and it's a big IF) the Melvins could turn it into a cool sludge number it would simply have to be instrumental since the lyrics are so godawful.
Then again i guess it could be tongue in cheek like this vile cover. :-& :-&
[07] FAITH NO MORE - Poker Face (Lady Gaga) / Chinese Arithmetic (Download Festival 2009) *Sync* HQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBE3CTcNa8I#ws)

Now that's one i can imagine being a much better fit Melvins wise. Believe it or not despite my Pulp slaggings i used to really quite love the 'Different Class' album when it came out. The best songs on that are all the NONE singles.

I've always been under the assumption that Buzz/Dale are not that big of Zappa/Mothers fans, just casual. They probably respect his way of doing things & social commentaries more than the music. Buzz is more of a Beefheart guy. He did say he caught FZ live in '80 or '81, had to be one of those two years, since he said Steve Vai was in the band.
So for the first time in years, I've been re-visiting and digging in to the Holy Trinity of Deep Purple (MK II) releases - In Rock/Fireball/Machine Head. In doing so I was hit with the realization that they (Melvins) must really dig Purple ... alot of this stuff sounds really, really similar to the trip Melvins have been on since absorbing Big Biz ... yeah, totally. Then in the recent "Ask Dale" interview; Crover's accolades of Paice just nailed this realization ... suprised I hadn't noticed it before; I mean those three DP records have been pretty central in my music listening ... I know them inside out as it were. So yeah, suprised I didn't notice earlier
Suffice to say they should cover "Bloodsucker" ... sounds right up this line up's alley ...

Listen to the way Buzzo transformed the horns from Bernard Herrmann's Cape Fear theme or Dies Irae/Day Of Wrath from the Shining and tell me he couldn't turn that string work into pure skull fuck heavy. Yeah, good choices ... but if we're going NMN covers my vote goes for: Two Lips, Two Lungs, & One Tongue; Red Devil; or Revenge ... I've seen NMN do all of these with a two drummer line up ... add to that NMN's glorious sibling harmonies ... Melvins w/ 2 drummers and their new found harmony vocal(s) emphasis could just kill these ...

Pigs of the Roman Empire is one of my top 10 Melvins releases. I'm going to have to try this. I have a couple of friends that were extras in Blade Runner...

I think they would most likely take a shot at something like "Epistrophy".
Speaking of which: Endangered Blood, one of Trevor's jazz bands, did a blazing version of that song on their first record.
One Rainy Wish - Jimi Hendrix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDgNHoHhgPU#)
The outro sounds like a melvins riff, well in my mind I can hear them play this and it would sound good. I mean if they got those drums as heavy as fuck and the Melvins themselves vocally sounded like they were drunk and buzz simpliefied the guitar parts. 8)
It's there for the taking buzz!
Paul McCartney - Monkberry Moon Delight (1971) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O83CrS-KElk#)
the wicker man ost-festival/mirie it is/sumer is a-cumen in (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG-0s5BnO-0#)
I can imagine the Big Business lineup doing justice to this, especially when the vocals come in.
Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z66wVo7uNw#)
The Who - Disguises (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73tRBoPZAWM#)

FRANK ZAPPA -- I COME FROM NOWHERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=194BLfXfvW8#ws)
I don't think anyone has ever covered this song, and this would be right up Melvins alley. That fucking solo at 3:03 :o Anyone who says FZ's guitar playing went downhill post '79 needs to crank this mofo.
Jim Martin - Special Tea (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBPP22Cs4pw#)
Is that Jim Martin from FNM? im guessing yes, sounds like it. never heard his solo stuff before.

Not a cover as such, but I'd love them to have been given carte blanche to write the music for Blade Runner. Such a wonderful film. Such dreadful farty keyboard music to go with it.
I'm sure Melvins would have created something more appropriately claustrobic and threatening. As it is, I watch this film with the sound down, subtitles on and Pigs of the Roman Empire on the CD player. It works.

Well, Karp did it so there's that. That would be awesome with the dueling Black Flag's out on the road this summer if Melvins decided to do all of side 2 of My War. Would bury either of the Flag's version probably.
I'm sure Pinky wouldn't approve  :bs:
The Melvins' version of Deep Purple's "Space Truckin'" that exists in my head tears the original version a new asshole. And the original version is one of my favorites. This needs to happen.
I'd kill to hear them do anything off Machine Head! But Space Truckin'

Practicaly already a melvins song.
Amazing given the amount of covers over the years that they never did a Captain Beefheart song.
Ive seen buzz say he was a major influence quite often.
I think even terrorizer magazine once described buzz as 'the beefheart of metal'!!
'Big eyed beans from venus'
'Beatles bones n smokin stones'
Or 'trust us' would be legend.

i always thought Neurosis should cover this song, but Melvins/BB would nail:
I Don't Care Anymore [Phil Collins], yes strange but... it has a "dark" vibe from drums - lyrics.
i thought Neurosis because the keyboards & drums, but Melvins replacing the keys with David Stone feedback, just may work, we all know Dale & Cody can tackle the drumming.
well... while typing this i had another idea:
just do a Melvins / Neurosis split with: I Don't Care Anymore & In The Air Tonight

Also, seeing Buzz get a decent chunk of screentime in FIX: The Ministry Movie made me wonder how a Melvins cover of a Ministry song would be. I want to see Big Business opening for Melvins but playing only Melvins songs. Big Melvins would then play an hour of Big Business songs - during any part they didn't want to involve themselves with musically, Dale and Buzz could act out scenes from The Tempest or Moby Dick throughout the second set.
During the interval, Trevor Dunn and David Scott Stone would box each other in a boxing ring on stage while singing songs a cappella from Ozma.

Excellent
I think the Melvins should cover a Can song. Vitamin C comes to mind. I don't know if they are big krautrock fans or not but I'm sure dale digs jaki liebezeit's drumming. Deadlock might be a good one too.
CAN could be a good choice with their long hypnotic songs.
On the other hand Black Flag's Nothing Left Inside would be great, too.

A heavy sludgey Melvins version of this would be cool.

Heard it on Psychedelic Sunday today - Q107 Toronto. Melvins would own this:

As much as the Husker Du cover owns, I think Melvins would bury the Huskers if they did it.

Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gee's. I think they could pull the harmonies off. It'd have to be the big business lineup for the extra percussion and Jared and coadys voices

That's a horrible idea. Ironic covers are stupid. I'm pretty sure Buzz & Dale choose covers of stuff they actually like. I don't know if they've ever mentioned digging the freaking Bee Gees. I'm sure they'd put a unique spin on it if they did though. Claypool covered it on his Duo De Twang album. It was funny the first two times I heard it.
I would enjoy it. Maybe a lesser known disco number would be better, though?

Kiss - "I Was Made For Loving You"
True story:
On the OFF! August '14 tour in which Dale filled in on drums, Crover & McDonald played it briefly. When Keith gave props to the opening band Gay Kiss during OFF's set, Dale/Steven played that song for like 30 seconds. Hilarious "had to be there" moment.
They're all Judas Priest fans right? We All Love Judy? It would be hilarious, and probably awesome, hearing what they could do with this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM__lPTWThU
That was my favorite Priest album forever, along with Rocka Rolla. The first tour I saw (and then they broke up for 14 years). :?
There are much better songs on that album. I don't really see Buzz approving of any post 1980 Priest, though.
why was I unaware of this? :?

Gee. If only someone had sent that to you.... :anonymous:
steve sounds a lot like lennon at times!
so now i want them to do twist and shout with steve.

Forget about Godzilla & Don't Fear The Reaper with the stupid cowbell . Trio w/ Pinkus on vox would own this.
I've always had a thing for Burning For You.
This would be good , Buzz doing ripping leads in place of the sax

Probably not the first one to think of it, but this:

how about little fury things?
I've been listening to Bauhaus a lot lately so I would love to hear them do this with the Biz Boys:
https://youtu.be/yai4bier1oM (https://youtu.be/yai4bier1oM)
Obviously Eno's is amazing but Bauhaus does a pretty darn good version too:
https://youtu.be/6Iuhc0QR61c (https://youtu.be/6Iuhc0QR61c)
The Big Belvins would do an amazing cover of it I bet.
Then with Pinkus, I can only imagine they would do a crushing version of:

I'm on the Love and Rockets kick. It's almost like the same thing....
They could put out a whole country western album and I would enjoy it.
I think this is where Buzz said they play everything but Country.
*he was only off by 2 songs. :D

Well, Altamont covered it, and it smokes. I can't believe this one didn't sell out. If it was under the moniker "Melvins" it would have, and at quadruple the price.

Well hot damn! I think the Melvins would still wail with it. I was thinking of the synchronized vocals for the chorus!
I'm gonna have to see if I can find the Altamont cover online.

The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
No youtube link available. Has anyone of importance ever attempted this? First heard it years ago on the Loose Ends CD. Cranking Disc 1 of the Purple JHE box tonight. Melvins would own it.
More Kinks!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSbSueq_KSY
My favorite 80s Kinks song! That song stuck in my head as a 6 year old!
The Beatles Blue Jay Way or It's All Too Much would be cool or a more psychedelic number like Tomorrow Never Knows or Within You Without you
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpkJd6MMT0E
The Who should have called it a day 20 yrs ago, after they said their last tour was 10 yrs prior to that. I guess they still play this tune, but I don't want to hear 30 seconds of the Roger & Pete show playing it today. Melvins would destroy this as The Who '69/'70 once did.
I hope the next Melvins album has no cover songs on it. Not that i dislike the covers they do, but i feel like recently their records have given over too much runtime to multiple cover songs. One song can be okay but the last 3 albums particularly have been far too heavily laden with covers. All to their detriment i might add. I'd like to hear a full Melvins album of new material from front to back without hearing a tongue in cheek, ironic cover song or something that doesn't sit well with what surrounds it.

Not so sure that is going to happen - I mean, you have Buzz and Dale who as the Melvins have been doing cover songs live and on albums since the beginning joining forces with Steven McDonald of Redd Kross who have been doing cover songs live and on albums since the beginning. I can only see them doing more!
If it's covers like the ones on Five Legged, then bring it on. I'd rather hear the Melvins do legit classic rock covers than rush out half baked original classic rock. (Not that that's what they are/have been doing, just for sake of argument.)
I could certainly see some more The Who covers. I was watching that documentary concert film the Who did in the late 70s. It reminded me that Buzz has probably styled himself after Townshend in some ways. The commitment to certain stage motions, some songs that are written for their effect on the audience, the way he plans and orchestrates the band and their project-to-project ambitions.
I'd be curious to see them take on "A Long One."
