Will this record ever come out? Like EVER?????
Im kinda amazed that all these years have passed and still nothing. The Void Manes guy last year still said it was going to be released but what's the hold up? Surely Ipecac could have put this thing out back in 2019 or such when there wasn't any other Melvins album to push.

Ipecac might not be interested? Other labels might not be interested? Is there any music to release? A full-length album?
Collaboration albums/projects get announced all the time and a lot fall through before even getting to the point of releasing an album.
Did Void Manes have anything to do with the Love/Death album? Or the TG clown single? Perhaps?

Possibly, but then Ipecac do put out all manner of off the wall stuff. As for what it is exactly, i don't think any information was ever given out.

I don't think he was involved with Love but yes he was listed on the Throbbing Gristle clown single. I did ask him on his FB a year or so ago if the collaboration record was still coming out. He replied "yes" so one does wonder what is going on. Im not really a fan of the Love record, but im still just eager to hear what this Void Manes thing is or would be like.
I'm looking forward to the Helms Alee split.
People, after years of rumors IT'S HAPPENING!!!!!!! The band wrote this on FB:
"As part of tonight's Black & Blue Friday streaming special, we're premiering a song from the Melvins vs @voidmanes Throbbing Gristle project. We'll have more on that in the future. See it plus more exclusives, including our Irving Plaza performance starting TONIGHT at Melvins.veeps.com"
Hey guys, where the fuck are you? The chat room at Veeps is not very crowded
Oh man, the first thing I do for those livestream things is shut off the chat feature - never saw the use in them.
=;
Loved the show though - great camera work and B+W film noir style!
Nice contrast to the swirling colorama psychedelic overload of the Melvins TV streams (don't get me wrong, those were cool too, but I dug the straightforward streamlined manner in which the Irving Plaza show was done).

I can't wait to find out more about this Void Manes material. I've seen the Void Manes dude refer to it as the "TG Sessions" before so i guess all the material is Throbbing Gristle covers in some form or another. That will be intriguing - an whole cover album dedicated to one band! I'm not overly well versed with Throbbing Gristle so i've not entirely sure what to expect.
I'd love to know why it has taken so long to be released. I mean it was 2014 when we first heard the rumours!!! I wonder if all this got recorded at the same time as the Throbbing Gristle covers on the Everybody Loves Sausages 7" vinyl. Could it just be Buzz and Dale with Void Manes or shall we get a bassist on there! I doubt it will be Steven unless he recorded something for it in recent years.
Ultimately i hope this ends up being a proper album and not something odd like Melvins sometimes do. Lets not see it just be a digital only, releasing one track at a time or such! Anyway from the post last night, it seems we may not have very long to wait at all until further info heads our way.

according to a story by the void manes guy should be an LP
"What's the obvious and predictable move for an insanely influential band like the Melvin's to do on their 40th anniversary? An homage LP to another insanely influential band Throbbing Gristle of course!
THROBBING JAZZ GRISTLE FUNK HITS!
A hybrid of covers and inspired jams, joined by their good friend Void Manes and produced by Toshi Kasai, this project will likely for the first time challenge longtime Melvins fans, because the band isn't known for doing that...ever.
Expect Industrial accidents, broken machines, modular synths, circuit-bent toys inspired by the dawning of the industrial music genre kicked off in no small part by Throbbing Gristle. The first all-electronic Melvins LP!?!

It's great to see it finally emerge!!! I mean, we first heard of this collaboration a whole 9 years ago!!!!! I kinda wonder why it had taken this long but still, none of that matters now. I just wish these cool releases were a bit more available and maybe on Ipecac than always served up on AmRep. That pretty much guarantees i won't be able to get this one. Unfortunately. I wonder if Hamburger Lady and Subhuman are the exact same recordings that appeared on the Everybody Loves Sausages 12" records. Heathen Earth too - i'm guessing that will be a proper cover of the TG track this time than the one Buzz wrote and sneaked onto ELS. I'm surprised this record (or the art at least) states it as a Melvins album featuring Void Manes. I always presumed it would be a proper collaboration and titled as such. Like how POTRE was with Lustmord. One last thing!!! Who's the bassist??? Is there a bassist or just Buzz, Dale and Void Manes???
Steven should be on it.

You should be able to snag a cheapie five dolla cd at least.
this rules. i love throbbing gristle.
I keep looking at the title of the album and wondering how i would change it. Melvins record titles are weird. Sometimes i love them or immediately dislike them. This sits somewhere between the two. Obviously it's a homage to TG's 20 Jazz Funk Greats but i'm not sure if i like it or not. I think it took me a while to warm to Pinkus Abortion Technician too being that it's aped the Butthole Surfers title. It's odd with Throbbing Gristle named in there mixed up with one of their most famous works. A nuisance to Google i imagine! I like how they changed "Greats" to "Hits" like it may mean a punch rather than a hit song. But still i keep thinking of alternatives....

It's funny that the song they chose to preview the album is one from the flexi. I'm guessing those two tracks didn't feature on the LP due to vinyl time constraints. So you might imagine they could feature on the CD.
Yeah I probably have to go big on this one. I bet one of the flexi songs is on the CD and one is not.

I'm almost 100% confident it's Buzz. It sounds VERY like him.
I only ask because it doesn't sound like Buzz to me at all, the cadences in his vocals seem different than what I have heard before. Hard to explain. It could also be the 8 layers of distortion on top of it

agree, great artwork
Was chatting with Stallion earlier and he made an interesting point - that it would be hard to replicate electronic sounds and what Throbbing Gristle did. Especially sounds that where generated by all sorts of weird, obsolete equipment that Throbbing Gristle used back in the day. I bet even they themselves wouldn't really know what they did at the time. That TG weren't musicians in the classical sense and so what they produced was more improvised. I think that will be interesting to consider in terms of how this album is approached and what Melvins/Void Manes do around that. I guess that is why the material is loosely covers. Covers but also their own thing or tracks in the style of TG. I mean when i first heard the Zombie B Zyklon song i went back and listened to the original TG version and i didn't even recognise it!!! Totally different and it's own thing. I suppose that is the way to think of this record as a whole. Although being that i'm not too familiar with TG's releases everything i hear on TJGFH will seem it's own thing.
I know one of Buzz's favourite TG is Heathen Earth. This is also one of mine from them. It is my understanding that the songs performed on that record are live interpretations of recordings and the original release had no titles listed for songs performed. That is most likely how they approached their attempt at what they wanted to cover. Interpretations.
Just went live. Got one!

Interesting discussion on the original TG recordings. At Clan of Xymox my son was explain what equipment was making the "old" electronic sounds on the tape machine. I thought, you can differentiate that?

I've long thought there was no bassist at all on this. I mean we heard about this in 2014 so that's a bit before Steven. Then if this Heathen Earth track is the same that is one Everybody Loves Sausages then that makes the session recording even older than that! One other thing is the in studio photos that are posted. There is no bassist present. Only Buzz, Toshi and (presumably) Void Manes. Not even DALE!!! Could this be the very first Melvins album WITHOUT Dale!!!!?!?!?
Just noticed on the back of this it lists a number of songs that all appear on the new album - HEATHEN EARTH + HAMBURGER LADY + SUBHUMAN + HOT ON THE HEELS OF LOVE + ADRENALINE + DISCIPLINE + ZYKLON B ZOMBIE

(https://themelvins.net/wiki/images/3/3f/MelvinsTGristleTribute2.jpg)
That's odd that those songs are listed but then don't appear on the album. I wonder if they were originally planned to be on it but then didn't get finished in time?
Wonder how many people will put it in the wrong hole.
The shows I have tickets for are pretty early in the tour so hopefully I can get one

I thought that, but then with those photos it does say "from ONE of our ... sessions" so Dale could have been at a further one. I guess we'll have a better idea when we see the liner notes.
You don't even need that if this is being released under the Melvins name it means Dale must be on it otherwise it would be getting put out as King Buzzo & Void Manes feat Toshi.

Opps. Yeah you are right. I forgot that you don't get that on the AmRep releases. Our suspicions are probably unfounded though, i bet Dale IS on this somewhere or other. It's a shame we might never get to see exactly what each member contributed. I love reading things like that and especially on a unique record like this. Yes, it would be particularly fascinating to witness something like that. Something unique and special. I doubt it will ever happen though. The recorded work seems to exist in it's own orbit compared to the live show and new releases barely get acknowledged. I wish the band would reassess that - tour playing LOTS of new songs or specifically "presenting" a new record live.

I'd definitely see that tour! I was probably one of the only people in the crowd who was totally stoked on their 10 to 15 minutes of noise at the end of their set when they opened for White Zombie in 1995
I'm kind of relying on memory here, but was that when David Scott Stone opened the night with a noise set? That was indeed, totally awesome. Add me to the list of folks who would do a double back flip to see Melvins perform a set of the TG material live. Studio or not, if anyone could pull it off, they could.

I like The Crybaby, it grew on me a LOT over the years but i do completely agree with you about COD replacing it. I think that would have been the best resolution of that project and then have The Crybaby be a differently titled, separate release.
They both function fine as the Apple Jam of the Melvins' All Things Must Pass.
I think Ipecac made the right choice for the label. I'm also convinced COD nuked the expectations for HAT.

I fucking HATE record flippers.
I went to the Los Angeles Gizzverse record fair for King Gizzard the day before the Gizzard show. Bought a 7" for $17.00, saw people buying stacks of this 7", by the next day they were on Discogs as high up as $999.00. Serious assholes. Scum of the Earth. As bad as an corporate executive.
To anyone who has heard the vinyl version, is Heathen Earth the same one that is on Everybody Loves Sausages? I expected it to be but then Hamburger Lady is different on this than the one on the Clowns 7".

Really? did you receive the CD?
I ripped the original version many years ago and never knew the right speed of the flexi... I thought it was 33 1/3 rpm.
And what about Subhuman?
As they're not included on the cd, and the lp ends with a locked groove, my guess is that subhuman is just repeated in the lock. Unsure what Heathen Earth would be. Hoping mine arrives soon. The digital version is great.

I knew that one wasn't. I remember the Tribute one was quite long whereas the album one is only a minute or so in duration. Do you know whether Subhuman and Heathen Earth are?
Also, I think the "Heathen Earth" and "Subhuman" on the Tribute 7" were sort of meant to **approximate** Throbbing Gristle, while most of the stuff on the CD version (which lacks those two) seems to at least line up to the original songs to my ears. Like "Zyklon B Zombie" has the same chords but instead of distorted bass(?) its surf guitar

Haven't heard this yet but prob my most anticipated Melvins release since ASA ... the lead up to this dropping has been epic and torturous. I'm envisioning greatness. Wish they woulda tackled "Persuasion" tho ... that tune is just so chilling and gross ... woulda been cool to see how they twisted that.
I really hope that at some point Melvins collaborate with Void Manes on a all new material release. Something that isn't covers or interpretations. I think that could result in something very interesting. I'm thinking along the lines of Melvins songs with added chaos.

It's their best stuff IMHO.
I forgot I sent you a Tape dude...Might have been 'best of Vol.1' or 'Vol.3' That has the sludgy bass lines that sound like they were a big influence on a few Melvins tunes.
Impossible stuff to get 20 years ago, now a lot of those tapes are finally uploaded on YT.
A few nights ago i had a listen to each of the Gristle original songs then the Melvins version for each song on the album. I wanted to see how similar they were or how opposed. I noticed a few are indeed fairly similar but most quite different. So in a way it is it's own thing.

On a whole other note ... shoulda put this in the Obits thread but I didn't ... pioneering Noise/Industrial malcontent/prankster Monte Cazazza past away on June 29th. Cazazza was a close associate of the TG camp and their earlier more performance art unit as members of COUM Transmissions. It was Cazazza that coined the phrase "Industrial Music" and was a key figure in the Mail Art movement. A pioneer thru and thru ...

RIP Monte Cazazza
you won't be disappointed
Got the CD the other day. Meh. :-"
I expected it to be alot more heavy and weird. The band/label promo-hype machine sure made me think so. This is not unlike some of FZ's synclavier albums, it's the MelvinsMuzak album. :anonymous:
Glad I only got it in cheapy CD form, and not the pricey vinyl. Will probably listen to about as much as Love and Chicken Switch.
I actually enjoyed Love for what it is. I thought it was like Melvins modern version of FZ's Lumpy Gravy. Will listen to both Love and this new one again to see if I still think the same.

I don't think i expected it to be heavier but i did think it would be weirder than it is. More disorientating or abrasive - not that i was necessarily looking for that.
So... understanding the parameters of this record has lead me to consider it's technically a songbook record. One artist makes an album of selections from an unrelated writer's songbook. Think Ella Sings Cole Porter or The Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits or Gene Ween/Aaron Freeman's Marvelous Clouds (songs of Rod McKuen). I think there's a few notable ones from the 60s and 70s I'm forgetting... Maybe Nilsson or Van Dyke Parks? Anyway, can you think of other albums that meet this criteria, especially more modern fare? How does Throbbing Jazz Gristle compare?
(The Great American Songbook, tribute bands, jazz standards records and the like don't count)

Nice observation! I am going to think about this today.
I think Thou's 'Blessings Of The Highest Order' (which is entirely renditions of Nirvana songs) is the only record i can think of. I'm sure there are more though.

First time I saw Thou was a mid-week matinee basement show. It was a perfectly stereotypical Pacific Northwest gray and gloomy rainy day. They played their cover of I Hate Myself And I Want To Die, and it was pretty awesome.
thou does sooooo many covers. minor threat, soundgarden, shellac. one of the reasons i dig them. i saw em in san diego a few years ago and they closed the show with into the void and it just crushed the place. so good.
on the songbook tip, in the late 90s james from yo la tengo called himself dump and put out a record of lofi prince covers. it's pretty great.
