Melvins Discussion / TWINS OF EVIL: SPOKANE!
September 03, 2023, 06:11:02 PM
whole show was amazing last night-

i went in totally unawares of Mr. PhylZZZ, other than some light gleaning from here, and they were definitely entertaining and a good warm-up for the melvs, that's for sure. i'm not sure if it was just the live sound being pre-tuned but they certainly gave me a Melvins-adjacent feel for the music they played, which makes me feel two things: 1. i wanna listen to some of their recorded music to see if what they sound like in that context is more distinct and 2. really makes me, even more than i already did, want to start my melvins-worship 2-person band. best chicago jazz i've heard in a bit.

now this is the first and most proper Melvins show i've been to in over a decade, besides the fact it's really the first show like this i've been to in half a decade since i've averaged working 50-60 hours a week for as long, and uh, i definitely let it out during the Melvins set. it certainly didn't help that Bullhead is also my favorite album, and that combo-ed with the greatest hits montage (which i personally appreciated as someone who hasn't made it to every melvins show ever in a 100 mile radius), made it a quasi-religious experience for me. i heard king buzzo preach his sermon on the mount. and it sounded a lot like boris. yeah, started their set out with a full band boris, then steve and coady made their exeunt at the end of things as buzz held us enrapt with a stripped-down participle to bring it all to a close. if anyone else was there, i was the one up front that looked like they were having an aneurysm, filled with ecstasy and zeal, barking prayers.

i can't lie and say i was super familiar with Boris before (not that i was intentionally avoiding them- by all accounts, i should have already been a disciple), although i had been listening to Heavy Rocks in preparation for the show, and with as hard as i went for the Melvins portion of the night, i think my neck is glad i didn't go feral with grace twice in one night. their set was a different dimension entirely, in many sensuous ways- the must and incense of fog machine vapors filling the nose, the bone-conducing volume of their amplifier walls, their gothic style and the change in lighting... the worship service began. also, the noisy electronic conjuration that i believe they ended soft edge(?) with was mind-shattering. would certainly make the effort to see Boris again if they perform nearby. also, they played boris as their encore, making it the third seperate time it was played in the night, although i think it was more than fitting.

as for a merch roundup, me and the old lady went to the melvins booth before the show, i considered getting the crazy circus tee that was from last tour(???) but ended up getting the bullhead for myself, night goat for the gf. also got the 14CD package set, as it seemed the best bang for the buck if you weren't going to nab any vinyl (too rich for my blood, even as much as i love some albums), and threw in the party pack for some goodies, even if it seemed a little spendy. The wife didn't want to get any Boris merch before the show started... but afterwards she was converted, and got a tour shirt and some of the pins for herself, and the amplifier worship service tee for me. I was half tempted by the EQD pedal they were selling, just because of the novelty, but after i asked the merchman if it was limited to the tour in any way, which it wasn't, i lost my interest.

all in all, an amazing night.

Ok.
Inform me of any corrections.
It's just that one of the artist name being Sultry Barber.
You can't really change that on soundcloud (as far as I know), but if you publish it in any other form, that's what I'd prefer the artist name to be.
Also, good job, and thank you.

Melvins have been around longer I would think. It can't be credibility cuz the Melvins have more cred than anyone and probably influenced napalm death.
Pssst
"Napalm Death were formed in the village of Meriden near Coventry, in the United Kingdom, in May 1981"
psst
"Napalm Death are a British-American extreme metal band formed in Meriden, West Midlands, England, in 1981. While none of its original members remain in the group..."
"Current members
Shane Embury – bass (1987–present)
Mark "Barney" Greenway – vocals (1989–1996, 1997–present)
Mitch Harris – guitar, backing vocals (1990–present)
Danny Herrera – drums (1991–present)"

I like to hear the band talking n' glabrously confabulatin' for whatever reason.
'Hugh' does it better, IMHO.
Hugh, all that shit is interesting and funny in it's way. Also, I'm totally with you on the Melvins @ Elks Lodge + Old Fart Commentary.
