Title: King Buzzo with Trevor Dunn GIFT OF SACRIFICE album - Aug 2020
Post by: amazonAMAZON on February 24, 2020, 03:16:24 PM
Description
The Melvins' King Buzzo has a new solo acoustic record called Gift of Sacrifice that comes out in May of 2020 followed by tours which will take him across the United States, Europe and parts beyond.

This is exciting news!

What makes this news even more exciting is that King Buzzo has recorded this record with the fabulously talented bass player Trevor Dunn. Trevor was a founding member of Mr. Bungle and also plays bass in the psycho metal/spaghetti western band Fantômas, as well as recording and touring with the Melvins (as Melvins Lite).

The addition of Trevor's stand-up bass makes Gift of Sacrifice a step up from King Buzzo's last acoustic record, This Machine Kills Artists. It gives this new record a haunted quality which drives the songs to a new level. Another new element is the addition of modular synth, which adds its own angular sounds to the acoustic guitar and bass. This is an odd combination of sounds not heard before on an all acoustic record.

9 Track Titles:

Mental Vomit
Housing, Luxury, Energy
I'm Glad I Could Help Out
Delayed Clarity
Junkie Jesus
Science In Modern America
Bird Animal
Mock She
Acoustic Junkie

Im ever so slightly disappointed it wasn't a "proper" Melvins album but still this is excellent news!!! His first solo record is one of the best things he's done in the past 15 years and Freak Puke (with Dunn) was pretty great too. Hopefully this will hit those same dizzy heights. The mention of the modular synth is interesting too! Makes me think of what they did on some of the songs on Tres Cabrones. I wonder what Dale will do while Buzz is away on tour - another Crover solo record??

Sounds great!

Melvins merch site says pink vinyl already sold out? Hoping it just hasn't went up yet. This is the first I've seen of it.

This is really good. I hope there's a lot of this relaxed evil psychedelia. Feels a bit like Honky mixed in with the obvious solo and Lite stylings (if I have to make past references). I anticipate some noodling on the album, too. And maybe a History of Drinks style rave-up? Time to revisit TMKA, Freak Puke and Tres Cab again.

So it looks more like an EP, then. I'm guessing the short ones are backward sounds and synthesizers. Oh well, maybe it's in the realm of Lysol, Egg Nog, and Bulls&Bees

Perhaps somewhat. I think at this point - and especially in the digital, no limits age - i really don't know what is an EP or LP! It's just music. I mean weirdly i personally consider the OFF records as "albums" even when they are under 20 minutes!! However i think it is interesting that recently Melvins releases have been getting a little shorter in duration. I mean 'Pinkus Abortion Technician' and both the 'Love' and 'Death' sides from the double album were all just under 38 minutes. Perhaps Buzz wants to focus in on what he is doing at the moment. To make things really concise and contained. For myself though, i always think 40 minutes or just under is the perfect length for impact and attention span.

I think that might happen too. Remember when Buzz put out his last solo record - that came out in the spring and then later that year they had Hold It In come out and started touring again.

Anyone have any idea how long tickets will be around online and what the prices are expected to go for, I gotta get mine ASAP, they go on sale tomorrow for the Toronto show at 10 EST.

Do you think they'll sell out quickly, I might not have enough cash until next week to get one right away!  :(

Buzz and Trev-meist will be here on the 10th of june and my B-day is the 14, there's no way I can miss this show!!! It's tradition man!

I first saw the melvins the week of my 16th birthday and it's like a birthday tradition to see them play ever since!

I can only say as to philly, but philly melvins shows usually sell out, but not until a few weeks before the show. LA and Sf might be different as those are both essentially home turfs.

I'm excited about the Portland venue.  Amazing sound and comfortable atmosphere.  Only been there twice over the years.  Once for Om and once for Autechre.  Missed Melvins there last fall because tickets sold out so fast and life was moving even faster.  Doubt this will sell out quite as fast but I will be getting my tickets right when they go on sale.

One of my favorite venues in town...they start selling at 10am...I'll be missing a few minutes of a meeting just in case they sell out as fast as last time.

Is it just me or has going to concerts been more of a pain in the ass in the last 5 years more than I remember growing up as a kid?

Like dealing with online bullshit more than anything else...venues have always been kinda been a shit-show of course.

I don't know...honestly I'm Just asking, what about you guys?

Canada isn't really invested in music like in the states man, not anymore at least...we used to, but I don't know what happened.

Like the El club venue had an outside place to sit and chill and cheap beer and pizza and it seemed more down to earth and communal and social...concerts here everyone seems more uptight and "go fuck yourself eh"

The last five years has gotten harder. The resale market is 7 billion dollars and automation is cheaper and more capable than ever. So online ticket sellers have to employ ever more cumbersome protective measures. The mass scalping ratchets up end user prices since artists don't generally allow for elastic supply and tickets are often initially priced well under market value.

Boomers are now in their sixties, but still go to concerts they can't even hear anymore. Younger generations haven't slowed down, since experiences and social media drive their priorities. Populations all grew but artists still generally tour the same 10-10 cities.

This all means we have to deal with more shit to get our tickets at inflated prices usually. Only things that look to slow it down are terrorism and modelovirus.

The Buzzo tickets are listed for the Toronto show at 28 Canadian Dollars... (Which is more like 20 USD) lets' see what I *really* end up paying which is normally three times that through online scalpers if the venue sells out to those intermediary ticket holder assholes.

I mean THINK about it...20 years ago, TWO DECADES AGO!!!  I pretty much paid that same 24-28 bucks to see the Melvins live and It's not like I had to line up for my ticket...it was totally word of mouth, I'm in a record store buying melvins records and the guys says hey you know they're playing here next month...and we have some tickets under the counter if you want.

Bottom line is things should have IMPROVED for the concert goers and GOD FORBID hard working bands like the Melvins...or am I missing something here?

I can't stand going to big shows or big venues any more. Honestly feel blessed that Melvins still tour smaller-Mid sized venues and tickets rarely cost more than $25. Rare these days. Very few artists can put on a show that carries through a large arena in my opinion (although some can)
-I also remember being able to go to most record stores (and some department stores) and grab tickets to any show. And even a big show was like $20-$25... I feel old now writing this

this.  I won't.   ...unless my wife makes me.      tickets are ridiculously priced.  it's very impersonal and the magic is lost, IMO.

I noticed that the fees for the Detroit buzzo tickets are only $1.20.  so grand total $21.20.  that's what I'm talking about.

BTW: I remember having to go stand in line at the local Hudsons store to get tickets for a show.  if it was a big one you would get there at 9 am and there would be 200 people already in line.
God bless the internet.

Ah, the good old days.  I remember going there at like 5am to get Dead tickets one time.  I hate getting tickets online because of the bullshit "convenience" fees.  $1.20 is crazy low.  I want to say it's like $13.50 in fees for a show at the Showbox.  Luckily I can go to their box office on my lunch hour and buy tix w/out fees.

I'll only go to a big arena show if someone asks me.  Then I let them deal with getting tickets.

the Detroit show is at Third Man Records.  it's not exactly a typical venue.  it's a small record store with an even smaller stage in the back.  I think it's like 200 capacity.   there will be no refreshments.  there will be no alcoholic beverages served.  it's an almost awkward venue that would be more suited for an afternoon show. tickets purchased directly at the third man website.   I'm guessing that's why the service fees are so low.    either way I think it's pretty stinking cool to be seeing Buzzo and T Dunn in basically a room.

Capacity at the place they're playing here looks to be around 400, which isn't too bad.  Never seen a show there, but it's 100 years old and supposedly "the best sounding room in Seattle".  Really looking forward to it.

I have purchased TWO...repeat TWO tickets to King Buzz-Fuzz and Trev-meist heist, Toronto June 10th Velvet underground show.

I can't tell you how fun it was...it was not, It took several calls and the Ticketweb page wasn't working right for me (after I filled in all the Name and Address, the next page showed a broken link icon) and Ticketweb.com wanted me to sign up and use a credit card (which I don't have, and it was not made transparent whatsoever that they did not want to use paypal or a debit card etc.) and believe me their website was not loading for me properly. I had to call...that was useless, so was trying to talk to the velvet underground venue guy on the phone too!

...The Ticket web phone guy said the Velvet underground will have physical tickets for sale and told me I should just go there and get the tickets...the Velvet underground phone guy said they DO NOT have tangible tickets for sale...So let me get this straight...you are a venue selling online tickets through another website and neither one of you are in clear communication with one another pertaining to the availability of your tickets? I'd only have to make a 400 mile round trip to the velvet underground from where I live to find out in person they didn't actually have tickets like some random guy on the phone said they would... Good thing I KNOW I can't trust anything anyone says ever.

Ok, that's no surprise...this is all typical anxiety inducing bullshit...not to mention the home printer is a wireless one and never wants to connect or function propery either which adds much excitement to the thrill of the experience.

That being said:

the online service charge, was like 7 bucks a ticket (tickets were like 28.99 or so plus a service charge for a grand total of 35 bucks a pop) and I only had to give the Ticket web guy on the phone my Debit card number trying desperately to resolve the issue online with their website, and that still resolved nothing, the OTHER guy from the Velvet underground told me on the phone even HE doesn't have a credit card EITHER and his friends have to buy him tickets too!

The ticket web phone guy was more confused that I was!!! He had NO clue, the only reassuring thing was the velvet underground phone guy said that Ticketweb is legit, so OK...fine fine fine.

So I guess on a scale of Giant Dildo's..this was only like a 5 or 6 out of 10 in terms of Girth.

So $ 69.99 CDN for the two tickets and only about a couple hours trying to fuck with printers, and webpages and Telephones this time...I think I got off pretty easy this time but again, this is one battle of many to come. It serves me right for wanting to go have fun at a rock concert though doesn't it?

And yes it's going to take me awhile to pay these off, I had to borrow the money...better pay 70 bucks now plus interest rather than pay THREE times that price to wait until they're sold out and I need to find an online scalper to get them from.

In the meantime, these tickets go on my wall and I will chant and pray to them every full moon until the month of the event is nigh.

This was the screen I got AFTER I spend half an hour dicking around trying to fill in my name and address and having to remove the dash - symbol in the Postal Code was part of the issue in the first place...it didn't want that dash symbol in there.

and no I don't wanna sign up to Ticket web and NO I don't have a Visa card!!! NO I DON'T WANT YOU TO MAIL ME PROMOTIONAL JUNK MAIL OFFERINGS!!!!  :x

I Just want a Ticket to a rock concert man.

on another side note: One cool thing is that is says King buzzo "FEATURING" Trevor Dunn, that's pretty cool.  8)

hmmmm, they're way too different. AmRep can be a massacre when it comes to vinyls:

- high prices,
- no digital download card included, let alone the option to download a digital version after placing an order,
- and sold out in less than five minutes.

Now, in the CD department yes, usually their CDs are cheaper because, well... they're only $5 bucks, even considering that the shipping cost to Chile the last time was $13.78, but I still think that Bandcamp is one of the best platforms out there, specially since they give you a wide range of different formats to choose in the case of digital download (I don't recall having downloaded something on AmRep) and that you can do it several times. I usually choose 320kbps MP3 for my phone and AIFF for my laptop. The only problem (not a big deal, really) with Bandcamp is that you can't choose different shipping options, they only give you one choice which is the most economic one... and therefore, no tracking number involved.

hmmmm, in the case of a national artist, sure.
In the case of an international artist, that's a bargain. You should see the prices here in Chile, the amounts of money required for just one ticket are absolutely obscene.

So it's common to pay 39000 pesos to see a band play in a 300 capacity venue, like say.. La Batuta? If so, that's crazy. Good for the bands, though.

$39.000 CLP is an excellent ticket price for an international artist... well, in the case of La Batuta that may not be entirely true for the bands since that place is known for having some electrical problems... It's not fun to get electrocuted.

I saw a record store on instagram posting some of the recent limited vinyl for resale at $400-500 a pop, so the prices Amrep charges are a straight up bargain.
The big question is, does it sell at $4-5 hundred? Not really.
Amrep is expensive, but like you imply, it's more or less caters to collectors (minus their $5 cds). Ipecac releases are more in line with normal priced releases.

uuufffff, though question... in terms of shipping costs AmRep is cheaper indeed, unfortunately the current global scene is really complicated due to the coronavirus. I would say closer to 90%!!!

I imagine they will be the album songs minus the 3 short (possibly synth tracks) that appear on the "full" record. You never know though, it could turn out to be only 2 of those songs and some covers.

Mock She

Yes, very good and not at all what i was expecting! The other song previewed so far was more similar to his previous solo record whereas this sounds a bit different somehow. So the record is pushed back to August 14th now!

Both the King Buzzo bandcamp page and Amazon still say 15th May. It seems a bit odd to release another song from a mere 9 track record now knowing that they were going to push back the release date by so much.

Thanks for posting that! I was surprised to discover that once again I had been out of the loop for this record as well as the "Six Pack" release. Considering how many mailing lists I'm subscribed to, I'd think I would know when literally any artist on the planet is even thinking about recording new material, much less releasing a new record, but maybe this whole internet thing will improve over time....   At least sometime this year, it appears I'll have a tasty pink slab of new Buzzo to lay on my turntable!

Pssst...this is out there in the wild. Trevor's additions really give it a lot of atmosphere and depth. The songs are less "Melvins demos" (which is what "This Machine Kills Artists" sounded like, to me) and more their own thing, even if you've heard compositions like this from Buzz many times.  If you like ambient Melvins, this is your lucky day. Might also feature some of Buzz' finest clean singing -- he hits a few super-high notes on this.

They ain't the only one. Heavy Psych Sounds have been pretty wonky with their delays and some of their releases this year too. To be fair they're based out of Italy so they got hit pretty hard in the pandemic.

My review of Gift Of Sacrifice!

Someone sent me a link to hear the album so being eager to hear it i did so. After two listens so far, it gets a solid 7/10 from me for now. The double bass sounds immense on headphones! Lots of synth here too. It's interesting that there is some synth work at the end of almost every "regular" song!! Personally im not sure if i like that or not yet. Those bits are not really parts of the song but additions tacked onto the end which im not sure works very well. When i first heard about a new Buzzo solo record i was excited. To me, his first one was brilliant. An easy 9/10. The best thing he's done or been involved in since (A)SA. Whereas 'Gift Of Sacrifice' doesn't hit me as impressively. It's good and enjoyable but feels almost like an EP. Not because of it's length but more due to those fewer songs and synth interludes. I really must get around to giving the Kiss original of 'Shock Me' a listen. 'Mock She' is fun at the end. All in all this album will probably grow on me a bit more though and it does sound very Melvins Lite which was to be expected and isn't a bad thing.

Future Edit
8/10.

I know. It would have been great to have a proper Melvins release. Oh well. This will give me a chance to check out the first solo album. I like the two singles from the new solo record.

Blabbermouth have reviewed 'Gift of Sacrifice' and gave the album 8/10.

QuoteThe artists' inherent inclination toward the bizarre and avant-garde is of course ever-present throughout "Gift of Sacrifice". However, there is something noticeably different. Buzz's body of work typically reflects a jovial and maniacal spirit. Never before has King Buzzo sounded this heartfelt and earnest in terms of his vocal delivery. His solo project was the perfect avenue for this kind of departure. We will undoubtably be treated to much more wild work from King Buzzo under the MELVINS moniker, but for now, fans of that great band, and those of Trevor Dunn and his projects, would be wise to spend some time with this stellar effort.

Oh, I wouldn't blame Ipecac in this situation. I know some folks who work for various other labels, and there has been a lot of general furloughing in a lot of those places; sometimes scaled down to one or maybe two peeps who have to weed through it all. I reckon they're doing what they can. I just get anxious at times, but what can one do? These are crazy times.

Second listen through and I am loving it.

Just because Dunn was added after the rest (mostly) doesn't mean it's not a collaboration. The bowed bass, soloing, and counter rhythms are stunning. I hear Dunn's work like the first Gnarls Barkley record or Patton vs X-ecutioners. It transformed the record and are now a core essence.

I don't expect these tunes to become a staple of Melvins sets and that's fine. It's generally soporific. Good for headphones and long walks.

The synth noise sections are perfectly placed and add some needed variety, too.

I still hope we see a proper Melvins follow up to A Walk with Love and Death this year. But between this, the EP, and the collab EPs I think Buzz is really doing right by us, the fans.

This guy makes a few interesting points about the record. Especially in regard to how this album is more adventurous and more traditionally in keeping with what Melvins were than have been in the past decade. Also how Gift Of Sacrifice seems like a relation to The Bootlicker. I don't agree with his opinion about Mackie's art though. Personally i like her aesthetic and stylistic themes much more than the older pre-Mackie album covers.

"Shock Me" is truly amazing. Every corner is just delicious. The slow, the fast, the lead vocal, the backing vocals, the bass, Buzz's playing. It's been ringing in my head for a few days now.

Second favorite is probably "I'm Glad I Could Help Out" with the way Trevor arpeggiates the bass line, the snarling verses, and then that unexpected washy chorus guitar. It's a bit like the little guitar hook in "Let It All Be" where it seems like it shouldn't work but it totally does.

Agreed, although i do think this new one did grow on me quite a bit. It's just a different beast really. At first i compared the both of them but now i think of them as distinctly different projects. Similar in some ways though. It really makes me wonder what Buzz might do for a third solo record. Add another extra element perhaps?? Im sure it will be something unexpected and novel.

Also i'd have loved to hear what this album would have sounded like without Dunn. Just to hear how it would have been. Probably is better with the double bass though. I think i tend to consider it a follow-up Melvins Lite album myself.

This album is simply beautiful.
At firts, first song, 'Housing..." I thought the "dark folk cliché" almost ridiculous... But it works. This is a GREAT song.
Sadness is a just mask, or a veil. Then the song become stronger, little by little, as if it refuses this sadness, more and more. It becomes a mountain of rage, maybe the rage of still being alive.
Beautiful, really.

Anyone else's Buzzo LP not centered, like really off center ?
I got the pink vinyl from Ipecac's euro-site & black vinyl from their u.s. site, both have the same problem.
>>>>UPDATE<<<
Ipecac (U.S.) is sending me a replacement of the black vinyl version.
Still trying to find out who to contact at the Euro-site to replace the pink version 😕

Of course there's an issue with that Basses Loaded vinyl it's missing like four songs

Those eight songs make a better album than the twelve on the CD. But I get you. Generally seems sloppy.

In what way?

Cd's are not LPs...you can only squeeze about 45 minutes on an LP, pushing 50 minutes like the original pressing of Stag made the album sound pretty quiet and a bit dull...what are they going to do? put it out as a double LP with only 4 songs on the second 12" would be a waste of the bands finances.

It's just the way things evolved, I guess if you want those missing songs like off the crybaby LP that got cut off the vinyl version, you'll have to wait another 25 years until basses loaded is re-released on a double 45RPM gatefold.

Weren't half the songs on amrep vinyl released already? If you're going to leave off something it shouldn't be songs exclusive to the album. The Krist Novoselic one might be what's not on vinyl at all? I could be wrong.

You wouldn't be wrong.

No one who ever interviews the band picks up on those kinds of details or thinks to ask about the how and why of these kinds of things.

At least They've released it on Both CD and Vinyl format.

I hope the writing credit/song title obfuscation isn't just a copyright and royalties dodge. I appreciate the little easter eggs as a fan. Y'all informed me on this here board what the cover was. Today I learned it also interpolated another KISS song in the middle. I love that stuff. Like the Pink Floyd Wall cover. What a hilarious little trick.

I think you need to have a certain number of copies you are producing before you are on the hook for royalties.  So these runs of less than 500 are probably safe.

Seeing this thread bump, you got my hopes up that there was a new album announced! But yes i agree, we need more solo Buzz plus more KingDunn. Plus on the subject of Trevor more Melvins Lite too. If the Melvins career ends at some distant point without ever doing another Lite record it will be a travesty.
