Title: Favorite Melvins bass riff/bass line
Post by: Mad Arab on February 03, 2009, 08:54:42 PM
Toy has a cool bass riff. So does Let It All Be and The Bloat.

I have to go with Toy as my favorite.

Those are all good ones.

I like Kevin's crazy slide bass in Dr. Geek.

I will have to ponder this question awhile and get back to it later.

If I Had An Excorcism, especially the part after the 'one note silence'. Tipping The Lion has a clever bassline. I have always liked Buzz's basslines like Sky Pup and June Bug. I've always liked the bass on POTRE quite a bit - wild and free.

MANKY Hiding behind Buzz's guitar riff is one behemoth of a bass line.

And the bass line in JUDY is better than anything Mark D ever did with the melvins. Thank you and goodnight!

Melvins is mainly the drums, guitar and vocals for me, in that order, the role of the bass guitar is very obvious most of the times, with some exceptions there. If the question would be favorite drums/guitar/vocals, this thread would already be 10 pages long, but this one is a bit tougher. Ok, let's say Larry, that one rocks your balls off.

Mark D had alot of good basslines. Someone said Tipping The Lion--I concur.

The bassline in Sky Pup is great too.

Sky Pup     -   it's just so damn groovy and fun
The whole Bootlicker; especially Jew Boy Flower Head     -  I just love the bass on that album.
Judy     -  it's simply an awesome bass line.
Night Goat     -  simple but extremely intense
The Talking Horse     -  great bass, I like the somewhat hectic feeling to it
It's Shoved     -  bass and drums together make it so good
The Bloat     -  has always been one of my favorites off Stag
Eye Flys     -  slowly creeping, disturbing bassline.
POTRE     -  all different bass lines are great, I really like the sound

*edit:  add HAT to the list.  The bass sounds insane on HAT.  Damn, lists like this are too difficult...

For me there's something special about the bass on HAT, there's some subtleties in there that are genius.

Coming out of my usual lurkery to say it's a shame nobody mentioned the "bass line" (if you could call it that) during the verses of Black Stooges. That crazy dive-bomb thing with the slide. "dwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeorBOOOM"
Fuckin' killer it is...didn't even actually realize it was there until listening with headphones one day.

I'll second "Let It All Be." So beautiful in its simplicity; and that goes for the entire song, including the second part.

If you turn up the volume all the way during the first few bars, you can hear a metronome clicking softly in the background. Love it.

the bloat is a prime example.

air breather from honky has some amazing bass parts if you listen.
lovely butterflies from electroretard.
islamic bomb from never breath what you cant see has a cool bass line.
I dont think anyone has said lizzy... Lizzy is a melvins song that every bassist has contributed to live.... theres alot you can do with the basic line to jazz up the song.
the first bass line in divorced also deserves some credit.
and the last one i can think of is off of POTRE... Im having trouble remembering the name... I think it may be either safety third or pink bat... its an instrumental song.

im the exact oppisite. dig it on the album, its both smooth and nasty.
always took the opportunity to head to the toilet or to the bar when they played it live. doesnt have that same feel. they go for the rock angle (well at least on the last tour, not sure about them playin it years ago with destitute kev)

when i saw them they played it with dave scott stone, it was awesome. the way they played it then sounds different friom live recordings I have heard. Dave scott stone had a whammy pedal to funk it up.

When I was first getting into the Melvins, there was this rocky live version from the Kevin tour where they played POTRE that got me into the band. There was something about the timing or structure of it that I couldn't quite grasp, and that really drew me in.

The Bootlicker version is amazing.

Eyes Flys -don't know why I didn't think of that. Live versions with Kevin like the end of C.O.D. rock the balls off.
The Bloat -best Mark D.
Black Stooges -just after the opening chords where it goes into the main riff is amazing and suddle, the bass is harmonizing and not just playing the root.
The rest of H.A.T. -all equally good.  The distorted tones are great, and the slow slow sloooooooow riff on Anti-Vermin Seed makes me wanna be a junkie, and all the slide bass parts are simply amazing.

Yeah...No,your wrong. I do like everything the Melvins do & if that makes me a drone then so be it. You seem to have something against
Heavy Metal, which is strange to me because the Melvins music has evolved from and still contains punk/metal roots. This is a big part of
what most fans love about the band. I don't know what 'pish' means, but if your trying to say they do silly or quirky stuff ,metal or otherwise,
again, that is a big part of what Melvins fans like....Anyway, you have a right to your opinion, but I strongly disagree.

The bass in civilized worm is nice. The basslines in black book (or black bock?) are nice, too. skweetis and up the dumper have NICE basslines. Bass on berthas - nice.

I'll second the bass in air breather, judy, bloated pope, at the stake, june bug and dr. geek.

They're nice.

This is a nice topic anyway.
