I would consider Mike and Melvins more of a Mike Kunka Record that a Melvins release that was guided by the support from the Melvins, and wouldn't have happened without them.

Technically it's a Melvins release I guess, but I think they were really interested in working with Mike and Helping out any way they could.

Hence why It's Mike AND the Melvins.

Making a record album was initially part of Mikes record Recording deal, to make a third 'solo' godheadsilo album..However, Dan suffered serious injury.

Mike said he was going to decline to record a third Godheadsilo full-length as a Mike 'solo' album without Dan. Until Buzz and Dale urged him back into the studio and started helping out on another album with Mike instead.

I think what Mike had to say about Buzz and Dale at the time was they were very supportive of him as a friend and they were clearly fans of Godheadsilo, and saw something in their music a lot of other people probably would have missed.

I would have overlooked godheadsilo if the Melvins didn't vouch for them as being one of their favourite bands at the time.

There was a moment of listening to Skywards in Triumph where they suddenly clicked with me and became one of my favourite bands.

Two factoids from Mike about Godheadsilo was apparently the band Hammerhead used to practice at (don't remember if it was Mike or Dan's moms house) in the basement and kinda got Mike and Dan into playing together when they were kids.

The Drummer from Hammerhead apparently gave Dan his old drums.

Also, Mike said he totally loved when Buzz could clear the whole room holding that E note forever... there's a track on Skywards in Triumph that does that, and it's kinda Mike paying homage to the Melvins.

Quote from: vince furnier on September 27, 2024, 11:03:21 PMi still think it absolutely cooks. and Omar is so replaceable in this one. nice bass work, but not like no one else could do it.
Being a big Mars Volta fan a bit back, i think i remember reading that growing up Omar originally started out on bass. But yeah he's not too integral is he. Makes me wonder why he even agreed to be in the band if he had zero interest in pushing it any further. Unlike Teri, Buzz and Dale, i don't think he even did a single interview for the album at the time.

Seemed more like a babysitting move at the time. "Oh, my wife is gonna play with her favorite band. I know she likes to party. I better be there so she doesn't run off with this old coot she idolizes." I haven't no evidence to back up this theory, just telling y'all the narrative in my head the last eight years.

Teri had toured with Melvins quite a bit prior to the formation of the actual band but you never know how these dynamics work out. Omar and Teri have worked together on multiple projects/albums a fair bit over the last 10 years or more. So i think it was just familiarity. "We need a bass player!! I'll ask my husband!"

i was standing next to Omar at the show where Teri crashed her keyboard and crawled over my feet in the dark. i didn't know that was him till the next day but he was the guitar tech/ stage hand that tour. 2015.

Indeed it would have been. Essentially that's Crystal Fairy there anyway. Always good to be reminded of this video. Thanks for capturing Grim!

Quote from: Dumpster D on October 02, 2024, 12:48:52 PMDamn that looked like it was a fun show.
Definitely was!  I was probably real close to the camera right there because I remember getting closer to the stage for that song.

i listen to that Crystal Fairy record more often than most recent Melvins albums.  such a bummer they never did live gigs.

that Melvins tour with Les Butcherettes was so killer. a few years before that i saw LB win over the crowd bigtime when they opened for Iggy & The Stooges

I wonder what the show setlist might have looked like if they had ever played. All the album and Rebel Girl?? Something tells me a couple of album tracks wouldn't have made it and instead a few covers would have padded the set out.

couldn't be as bad as Dead Cross with 28 minutes of music and having to turn out a 40 minute set under the terms of their contract.

I don't remember that. Did they just play the same set twice?
