From Hazelmyer's Facebook page:
"So this year is the Fortieth Anniversary (1983-2023) of the Melvins. We've got a bunch of really cool weird assed releases planned for the year in celebration, but this one might be my favorite as for me it's pretty much perfect. I swear. The Melvins first single DESTROYED when it came out. It was far meaner, more seething, structurally insane and pushed underground boundaries further than any of their Seattle peers of the era. I ain't arguing with anyone on this point as I was there at the time. I personally remember it as a game changer and it seriously altered how I was personally approaching music at the time. So I asked Buzz about doing a re-issue of that material as part of this years commemorative releases. He didn't skip a beat and said "Yeah, and we'll re-record that material too". Genius. So the 12" is the songs from the 80's and the flip-side is the same songs circa NOW. It's a perfect reflection of the then/now of the band. Glorious. For me there's times as an artist or musician when you KNOW you nailed it, and I gotta say I was pretty jazzed with art results hitting it square in the nuts for this, a high bar, as excited as I am about this release. It's kinda the perfect culmination of our working relationship that has spanned damn near the full 40 years these creeps have been at it. Yeah yeah it's rooted in nostalgia neither the band or I usually have a lot of time for, but also showing the creative vitality us dinosaurs can still muster as we continue to indelicately stomp around.

That's way cool! Good start to this 40th anniversary campaign
Sooo excited!
Hell Yes
Would love to hear modern take on these songs! Can't wait
Something of a surprise and i'm eager to hear the updated versions. I hope they don't make them too upbeat and light as is the tendency in the bands material in later years. I wonder if this will be with Steven or as Melvins 1983.
Easy As It Was is simply one of my fave tunes of theirs. Haze on point, that shit was fresh. Good memories indeed. Looking forward to hearing this.

1 - i think Haze and the Artwork would say that if it were true.
2 - his description makes this seem like a spur of the moment thing and projects with Mike need to be planned way in advance, if i recall.
fuckin great
I know Haze said he was very pleased with the art for this, but personally speaking i find it pretty darn awful. For my tastes, Haze is wildly unpredictable. Some of his cover art i really like and admire while others i find very amateurish. Sometimes i have to almost wonder if the same person made them when the results are so polarising like that. His choice of colours and creating a balanced image is almost always uniformly horrible.
I am super excited to hear this!!!
I love the art, might have to spring for the limited edition art version. HOT STUFF was one of my favorite comics as a kid.
Love this! Super excited to hear new/old tunes
Always preferred 6 Songs over 10 Songs. Keen to hear the new take on them

Also I believe that Buzz would only be looking to better the bass on this one. Considering the original had Matt and didn't he break a string, and have a new one on the recording?
Thought that was why they went back later and felt that 10 Songs takes seemed better and released that.

i thought that story was about GPT.
Per the Melvins 6 Songs wiki page entry:
QuoteDale Crover said this about the various C/Z Records versions of this release: "The way it was (recorded), it could have been better. We set up live in a 24-track studio and the original 7" sounds all boxed in. Since it was our first record, we really didn't know what we were doing. I think the songs are OK, but the sound quality should have been much better for what it was. The re-release of that on C/Z was actually a different recording. We recorded the songs twice because on the first one, the vocals were a little bit distorted, a little bit too hot, and our bass player (Matt Lukin of Mudhoney) had only changed one string on his bass, so this one string was really bright and the others were dead. We went back in the studio and did them again and put the second (session) out. When we listened back to the first one a long time later, we just thought it sounded way better, so when they re-issued it (on C/Z) we had them put that one out."
I'll tell ya this artwork kicks major ass
I like the artwork too! Haze rules!
I'm really jazzed about this. Looks great. Great idea. Whether you prefer the new or old versions it's a all there
they should start playing these songs again. i'll take anything from that era besides the highly overrated Eye Flys! :P 8-[ :anonymous:

Goes w/o saying but I'm hyped on this release
'26 Songs' is a record i haven't listened to much. But this new release has got me going back to it and totally enjoying it too. I wish Melvins sounded that heavy and pissed off nowadays.

Love that album. Melvins never sounded so nasty. I remember Kevin was in his final days of the band when the Ipecac CD came out. That lineup did a great version of At A Crawl. Real pumped for this new release.
def queuing up for a couple cds tmrw on shoxop :)
I'm not expecting the 2023 versions to be superior to their 1986 counterparts (which is impossible in a way), but I am thrilled that they return to that material! Hope some of it will find its way into their live set.
Also I am curious about the version of the 1986 session they used... there are two:
Feb 1st, 1986 - that's the one released on 8/10 Songs, with the bright sounding bass string and the somewhat distorted vocals
Feb 8th, 1986 - re-recording session, released on the 6 Songs 7"
26 Songs has both, but the Feb 8th tracks are vinyl sourced and sound rather crappy. Not getting my hopes up, but a straight-to-digital Version without the vinyl step would be awesome...

Sounds good to me!
That's not a fail. Interesting how it loses a little bit of the straight forward ooomph of the original and adds some of Buzzo's guitar tricks and effects. I hope they play at least one of these songs on the tour.
super fuckin duper
Works for me.
Can't wait to hear the rest of the new versions.
Slooooowed down and possibly heavier than the original, this is great stuff! Maybe revisiting some of these older tunes will inspire new music in this same vein! Full circle
So good. You could have probably told me this was a lost take from the Houdini sessions and I'd have believed it.
Yes a bit of the old Melvin I like.
HAWT DAMN!
Yee Haw! An old one and yet also a new one. But ... it none the less, is a hot little punk rock number.

a lot of the time i do with these Melvins cheapy CDs. still cheaper than one CD in a jewel case or digipak. i bought 3 copies of Honky.
Just got mine out of the mailbox this morning.
It sounds great. At first I thought the toms had a bit too much flamming sound or like a quick delay on it. But then when you hear the 1986 versions it also had that kind of sound.
At least half of these are pretty instantly the definitive version for me.
There's no weird surprises here.they didn't try to turn Disinvite into a Who medley or anything. Just straight core Melvins versions of these classic tunes. A must own.
Apparently we did really need a another fucking version of "At a Crawl" after all.

Thank-God for that!! I did think that at least one track would get the messed with treatment. A nursery rhyme in the middle of a song or something!

I'm also surprised there was no Electroretard "new and improved" treatments to these songs. I gotta trust Melvins instincts here. It's quite possible the songs didn't lend themselves to any rework or maybe it would have seem contrived. Excited to hear the whole batch

Just got mine. Excited to put it on!
I got mine today, by the way... is it just me or at the very end of "At a Crawl" (1986 version) and before "Disinvite" starts you can hear Buzz repeating the word "Ready"? I just listened to 26 songs and Buzz doesn't repeat the word... I know, I'm a geek.
EDIT: I typed "here" instead of "hear"
Outside of At A Crawl, i never really knew these songs prior to this release. It has been good to go back and properly listen to the start of the band. The new redo's of the old songs on this EP are great! Very similar to the originals but with just enough difference to warrant being brought back to the present. Maybe i'm hoping for too much here, but i do wish that this might inspire Buzz to write some more material in this vein. To get the band working in a more crunchy, heavy sound again. For all the dissing of Toshi's production on their releases, this one sounds pretty darn good.
Anyone know when the vinyls are going up? I'm on sort-of-vacation this weekend (randomly drove to Boise, Idaho) and just need to know if I need to have my itchy trigger finger ready on Sunday morning.

Had to resort to ebay to get BMR CD at basically the same price. May come back in print says the Shoxop Oompa Loompa. They used the Feb 1st, 1986 version with the false start, which means it's from 8/10 Songs, not the 6 Songs 7". I wonder if they don't have the master tapes for the Feb 8th recordings, since they were taken from vinyl for 26 songs, and the Gluey Porch Treatments Boner cassette, from what I hear. Maybe the original vinyl is the only source.

It just seems weird to me that the 1986 10 Songs versions are the ones following the re-recordings, instead of the 6 Songs versions. I would rather have re-recordings of the other 4 songs from 10 Songs, than the first 6 songs from 10 Songs following the re-recordings, which have been released a few times before. Seems like a cop out, to me.
Does anyone know if there exists the master tapes of the 6 Songs versions, or is it only the original 7"?
It would make sense that they don't, since they've only been re-released on the Gluey Porch Treatments 1991 Boner cassette, and on 26 Songs, both from vinyl.
Anyone?
Was itching to revisit these songs again in a fresh context so I fired up the cd in me auto as soon as I got me grubby lil meat hooks on it, for 86 it's ferocious, and as haze said "seething" so accurate. They hit as hard as they did then
