Title: Fuck this town...
Post by: VaticanShotglass on July 08, 2008, 01:18:57 PM
Ok, so I just moved to Kalamazoo (for real) last week because I'm going to start grad school here next month, and after sweating and busting my ass, killing my back moving across six states I sought to claim the light at the end of the tunnel.  My july 8th answer to months 0f salivating and patiently avoiding premature gratification.  And guess what.  This entire town has no music stores other than the CD warehouse I just left in defeat.  I was told that they had no plans to order Nude With Boots and when looked up it is apparently on back order and unavailable for special order--and, no there are no other music stores other than Best Buy and Barnes & Nobles.

So I know its a little lame to complain about it all, but I'm just bummed out.  i wanted to pop open the new cd and squeak my fingers on the virgin plastic case.  Just out of impulse I replaced my old copy of Highway 61 Revisited that an ex made off with.  Just not the same.  I guess I could rock out to the melvins myspace page while I place my order on Amazon (which I didn't do originally because during moving I haven't had computer access in weeks and wasn't sure of my exact apartment number).

Well dicks.  Does anyone else have lame town woes?

Before Nude With Boots released today, the whoe album was posted on their myspace and lastfm. They took it down but left two songs up on myspace.

My town sucks too. There are no decent cd stores here. I know a few that are all right, they even have a couple of Melvins albums but no huge collection either. I depend on internet stores, which isn't all that bad since most cds are quite cheap there. Usually cds cost about 17

*considers going all egomaniac and moving this thread but then decides as long as its talking about trying to find NWB its okeedoke.*

dude....  welcome to 2008.    NO major record store is carrying MELVINS cds anymore.  and indy stores are dropping like flies.  I don't buy anything at retail stores.  order it all on the internet. its cheaper as long as you can deal with a little wait.

PS: I'm within 100 miles of you right now and I bet I'm not within 300 miles of a record store that has ANY MELVINS cd's on the shelf.

The local hasting had three copies when I got there today. The other two will languish for a year, just like I remember (A)sa did. POTRE has been up there used for about 6 months, I move it to the front every time Im there but fucking Mellencamp and metallica swallow it up. I hate the fucking fashion shitheads down here.

I can't believe Hastings had it. When (A)sa came out I had to go to a small 'indie' record store, that I found out, when I went in, was under new management. The old guy was cool, and was always playing something cool over the sound system in there. The new guy as it turned out was an old 'friend' of mine(I went to school w/ him and used to do artwork for his band, but only because another friend of mine was also in said band). They wanted $18 for it, all the cd prices went up. Since he was such a friend he let it go for $16. He also got my phone# and e-mail and said he was gonna send some freelance work my way, but the douche never called.  :x

So out of restlessness and trying to get to know the new town I went around to various places.  No luck in Best Buy  but oddly enough they had Houdini Live there.  Then I went to Barnes&Noble's since they have a decent blues section its a loiter friendly establishment.  The sales guy asks me if I needed helped and I asked him about the new Melvins release for the hell of it.  He concentrated a while and told me to hold on and came back with NWB!  He said they only ordered two and hadn't gotten around to shelving it as they don't even have a melvins section.

So all is well... until next time.

Seriously though, I've been wading through fucking mellencamp albums for nearly a decade hoping to luck up in a chain store.  When I lived in Greenville NC it was the exact same story.  When I lived in Boone I got a little spoiled because it used to be one of those college towns with all sorts of counter culture small mountain town things going on (which is dying but not so fast as to not have a record store).    Ironically enough that town got a small metal oriented store the last month I lived there.  It had a pretty awesome selection but it it wasn't metal or lame ass indie rock (whatever that really means these days) they didn't have it.  The clerk was confused by my interest in Peter Green or early Fleetwood Mac.

Oh, and sorry if I posted in the wrong place.  I don't have too much time to participate on boards much and its hard to remember the nuanced differences between their thread generating mores.

You live closer to me and I know for certain that my local record store has it(not splitting hairs, just sayin ). They have quite an awesome Melvins collection, actually. I bought my Stag vinyl there for cheap. Luckily, the place is usually always packed so I think the store will be sticking around.

in flint, best buy always carries the melvins, they have like 3 copies of a senile animal right now, the cd store in the genessee valley mall has some, circuit city and best buy also occasionally carry them.  not to mention wyatt earp, which always has them in a few days before everyone else.

so if you'd like to save yourself the hassle of waiting for the online shops to ship it to you, check out these places.

That's cool, Best Buy didn't have it out when I went there, but maybe they are just being slow.  I never experienced Best Buy having them in the past but that was a different area of the country, where no one in my high school knew who this band was.  Not many people even listened to nirvana there.

I lived in Kzoo while I went to college, just moved last summer to San Diego. Check out CD Warehouse on the corner of Drake and KL Ave, that is if it's still there. They can order you anything if they don't have it. They usually have some good vinyl as well.

That's exactly where I went, but oh well.  I live very near by.  So did you go to Western Michigan?  That's where my M.A. program is.  Lemme know if there are any cool places to eat or visit in town.  I've not been to this part of the country prior to moving here.

In the next two years all the old ma and pop cd stores will be gone.No matter how well they do people are starting to use the internet alot more to buy cd's.Hell alot of them bootleg half of it anyway.i also think in 2 years everything will be like itunes you will be able to download the artwork and everything because most music listeners only like one or two songs on a cd anyway thats what they want just one or two songs.I might even go as far to say cd's might go obsolete like tapes. However the band might put it out through some kind of label but only a handful will exist.

Yes, I graduated from Western in December of 2006.  I would definitely recommend going downtown and walking around the Kalamazoo Mall and checking out everything around there; Olde Peninsula,  definitely go to Bell's Brewery, great beer and great food.  There's a lot of history in Kalamazoo, it's a cool town. I would just recommend driving around and checking all the different areas out.  And I almost forgot, go to East Campus and if you get a chance, go to South Haven; it's west of Kalamazoo on Lake Michigan. They have beaches and a nice little historic town, very cool.  Also, some good bands come to Grand Rapids, I saw the melvins at the Intersection in 2006. Good luck to you.

no shit.

thats cool.   I guess.

so I suppose my info gathered from some zit faced punk kid wearing a best buy shirt who thinks MELVINS is some new age country western outfit is suspect at best.   I asked out of irratation, years ago now, why no more MELVINS on the shelves?    after asking me what category that would be in, walking me over to the M's and finding no MELVINS he responds with "uumm... we don't carry that anymore.   anywhwere."

but I'll take the change& route and say "ORDER OVER THE INTERNET".  no matter how obscure you'll likely track it down sooner or later online and probably find it "used, like new" for about $3.

The only good thing about Kalamazoo is Bell's Brewery, and actually it's a great fantastic thing.

Thanks for the heads up, I've only been here a week.  I had some Belle's when I visited and made the choice to move.  Really great!  Apparently Heritage guitars is a cool thing to check out as they are comprised of the folks who stayed here after Gibson moved to Nashville.  Until the recently shipped production to asia ProCo used to be here.  Not exactly exciting but neat.  Once my semester starts I won't have time to do cool stuff so it won't matter in a couple of weeks.  Between grad school, teaching, research, and getting on my knees to make it to get published or make it to conferences I'll probably spend my free time playing with my cats and sleeping.

And yes you can buy cool shit online.  My recent situation made try a different route for this one.  Plus when I get on amazon I can never just buy one cd or book.  First I try to shoot for super saver shipping and by then I'm hooked.  Plus there's something fun about digging through used john mellencamp albums to find a missing piece of your collection.
