My ears are ringing. More to follow later.
I will be here all night waiting Rictus.
Hope you didn't wait up too long Grim. Couldn't really get to it last night.
Got there early, and hit the merch booth. Got the Big Biz eagle shirt, the Trick and Riddle book, and the Devil's head MELVINS shirt. All they had left was XL and 'woman's large'(which Walsby told me was actually a youth shirt ) so I had to get a XL. I hope it shrinks. :|
It was hot and humid as fuck. Hipster activity was high, douchebaggery at a medium. All in all the crowd was decent, nobody really pissed us off.
Morningstar Rising came out. I liked it. Both Dale and Coady on drums. I hope they release a recording of some sort in the future.
Big Business came out, and Jared was having some trouble with his mic. Toshi and Coady started to noodle around while Jared messed with his cables. I liked the new stuff, one song in particular, don't know the name, but it's the one someone mentioned where he plays the main riff around the 9th and 10th fret.
We found us a good spot before the MELVINS went on, just in front of the sound board in the back. There's a riser up against the wall so we had a good view of the stage which was good for my g/f since she's so short. The MELVINS were tight as hell, the new material sounds great live. I decided I really love the drums on The Kicking Machine.
There was some trouble during Civilized Worm. Apparently someone was grabbing Buzz's mic stand and made the mic knock him in the teeth. They stopped and Buzz said: "DO NOT TOUCH MY FUCKING MIC STAND. I'm glad you're really getting in to the show but, bashing my teeth in isn't a good way to show your appreciation."
The crowd went nuts when they played Honey Bucket, and I noticed some people crowd surfing when they launched into the (a)sa material. :?
It was cool hearing some of the older material. Tipping the Lion was great and Boris. I actually got goosebumps when they played Eye Flys. :)
During the outro to Boris I guess some guys started fighting in the front and Buzz stopped and said: " HEY! Settle down kids. No fighting in here, you wait til' you go outside. I don't care what you do out there but, no fighting in the club." Then a bouncer came out and said something to them. Then Buzz says: " are you alright now? Are you sure? Cuz' you still look kinda pissed off. " and he said something about them to be nice to each other and he made them hug each other.
I remember him saying also:"remember we're not your parents we don't really care." :D
By the time I got out of there I felt like a wet sock. One thing I should mention; behind us by the sound board there was a girl with a very large very professional looking camera, and some guy came up to us and asked; "can I get up here behind you guys? We're filming the first five songs of the show. " I don't know what it was for but now that I think about it I should have just asked him what it was for. #-o
Cheers for the review. And don't worry, the Reaper doesn't wait, he sleeps.
What were you thinking when Buzz interrupted the set, did it annoy you?

Didn't annoy me at all. I love Buzz's little interactions with the audience. The first time they picked up right where they left off without missing a beat, a testament to their professionalism. The interruption to Boris was great though, that he made them hug and they actually did it. They were so close to the end of the song, Buzz was like; "ok, now where were we?", and it made the song last just a little bit longer.

This always seems like a ridiculous request. "You want to stand in front of me because you have a camera? Tough break, get here early, or pay me to move."

Yeah I saw them again in Dallas and it's actually around the 12th/15th. During those two crash mutes it sounds like he's saying "Catch... mice...." but I'm not sure.
Thanks for the show review.

What were you thinking when Buzz interrupted the set, did it annoy you?
It actually annoyed me a little. I think it would have been better if he had just kicked the guys hand away instead of stopping the show. Bands that play heavy music should expect little things like that to happen. It sucks that people are such jackasses, but if that is the worst thing that happens to you on the job then consider yourself lucky. Unless something really bad happens, I say keep the show rolling. The worst instance I've seen of this was The Sword's "record release" show for Age of Winters. I put this in quotes because they didn't even have the record for sale at the record release show. Someone throws a plastic cup at them and they stop playing, saying things like "we don't practice our instruments all the time to have shit thrown at us." It really turned me off that a band would threaten to leave their own record release gig in their home town because someone threw a plastic cup on stage.
Good show review, but I want to add an observation. I've seen Melvins live upwards of 20 times since 1996 and this show is the first time I've witnessed multiple fights in the crowd (I'm sure it happens, but I haven't personally noticed it). It seems like a large section of the crowd was composed of kids around 16-18 years old that don't quite understand the acceptable limits of contact at a live show. Someone bumps into them and they don't know how to react other than getting pissed and starting a fight. I was behind this little prick that looked about 16 that was offering anyone within earshot a drink from his flask of Jameson's. He just wanted to let everyone know how badass he was for having whiskey. He eventually got thrown out for starting several fights throughout the show. I'm probably just getting old, but there seemed to be a lot of these kids there compared to the typical Melvins show.
I find it strange how this far into their career Melvins are drawing crowds that only really know the last two albums' worth of material. Crowd reaction was much stronger for the new songs (from ASA and NWB) than for Boris/Eye Flys, or even Honey Bucket. Not a bad thing per se, just surprising.

I thought it was strange as well at the Amoeba show when the crowd went silent during the older material. Strange.

I think I'm gonna cry when I get to hear all these older songs. Eye Flys, Boris and Tipping the Lion as well which hasn't been mentioned that often..
Thanks for the reviews.

Not that it matters, but was this Amoeba LA or San Fran? It would surprise me more if bay area crowds didn't freak over older stuff.
I'm thinking that the association with Big Business may be what's causing the change in the crowd makeup at Melvins shows these days. Speaking of Big Biz, they haven't impressed me in the live setting since the first time I saw them playing the front room at Emos several years back. I prefer their first record and I don't believe they played a single song from it this time out. There's something missing from their live show, and it wasn't the addition of a guitar (which I feel adds little to their sound). I think they were louder back when they were playing as a two piece on smaller shows. Do bands that are opening often not play as loud as they would if they were headlining so there's a proper ramp-up in volume by the time the headliner goes on, or am I crazy? Big Biz just didn't seem loud enough this time.

Yeah, I can definitely understand that! An interruption like that, in the middle of the song, is so annoying.
Last year I saw the Melvins at Roadburn and this guy was jumping around like crazy - very annoying. Even though I knew I should just annoy him, I just couldn't, and before you know it, you realize you're paying more attention to this guy, than to the band. Eventually my friend threw an empty water bottle in his face and then after talking some sense into him, he left.

love the different Jared's bass line at the beginning of Tipping the Lion, has anyone noticed it listening to the Detroit show from the live music download thread?

This type of behavior is much despised by this Melvins fan. This is why I had to slam our good friend in the Louisiana show thread. Go fucking annoy people at a Madonna concert please.

This guy was definitely on some kind of drug, because at some point my friend got a hold of him and told him very clearly that he was annoying everyone around him, and he looked back as if he had no clue. Eventually we sent him off like a little dog, just like sending a kid to his room for not eating his dinner.
