nice review.  you are a typing machine.  glad you saw the butts, and pinkus is a great showman.  honky really honed his skills, and paul is great now.  glab to know they did not try to pull off the same set list both times.

gibby made the comment last month in houston that mick jagger can play the guitar better than he can.  did he break out the saxamaphone?

That was really well written (and long). Sounds like it was tiring.. in a good way.

Great review, Maar!!  With your descriptive stories, and Idlehanz pics, i feel like I was there.  Not really, but it all makes up for it reading your reviews.  Will Lun  be writing anything?? ? ?

Shit, I don't have to write anything now!

And yes, Gibby played sax both nights.

When I saw them in Amsterdam a couple of months ago they played for almost two hours it felt.

Last weekend all bands were scheduled for an hour, but most bands played a shorter set, except for the Melvins who did a lengthy version of Boris with Jared going into the audience. What sucked about that Melvins show is that I was spending too much time thinking how I was gonna kick in some faces of the twats a few rows in front of me, fucking distracting. Jared going into the crowd was funny, but didn't add anything to the song I think. I thought he was gonna get dropped when he crowdsurfed but he didn't. Funniest moment was when he put his head under some guy's shirt, then turned his head around, and was taking the guy with him, like some kind of shirt-wedgie, the poor guy had no idea what was happening to him.

Oh yeah, the Buttholes. Yeah Pinkus fucking ruled, hard to say exactly why, just his whole attitude while standing on stage I guess, and a badass player. He was watching the second Melvins show from behind the stage and seemed to enjoy the newer songs.

Gibby started the second show with a joke about how he DID NOT beat up those two girls this morning, because 1) the first girl hit him first, and 2) it was a guy. That guy is just permanently funny. He had noticed a lot of old people at the festival too. "Lots of old people here, man, lots of old motherfuckers", OK maybe you just had to be there.

I have no idea, maybe if she feels like it. I was actually thinking she should add some drawings to my review :D

And thanks for the kind words, folks.

That's Mastodon's guitarist/vocalist.
ATP was amazing, my first, second and third time seeing The Melvins. (if melvins1983 counts)
And I'm seeing them again tonight.  :)

Of course Melvins 1983 counts, let's not make the confusion on their band names any bigger than it already is, let's leave that to terminologists.

Yeah, that is Brent Hinds from Mastodon, a huge Melvins fan. I heard from MacBastard he threw beer at the security on Saturday night and couldn't get into one of the shows. Good for him, if you ask me.

There are a lot of pictures on Flickr, go to flickr.com and search for ATP there, and then sort by date added.

Alex, the Meat Puppet were awesome, it should be there somewhere in the review. All these reunions have made me skeptical but those guys are obviously just so damn talented and they really shouldn't do anything else but play together and touring this goddamn planet, maybe in a perfect world. I wished Kirk would have joined Porn as well, that guy sure knows how to create some nasty feedback.

I'll scan some wortwhile stuff tonight or tomorrow, descriptions from the program, schedules, tickets, etc. I didn't take any pictures.

Yeah, MacB told me a story he got into a fight with one of the SOAD guys or something, pretty pathetic if you ask me.

Maybe he will listen to Buzz if he would tell him that "drunks are only fun when you're drunk", if he wants to stay part of the 'circle' at least.

Yeah, if Joe Preston joins Torche now we know who to blame! I had such a great weekend and it was great to meet everyone and survive that awful bus journey! I'll write a bit about it later but here's a link to the small number of photos I took, feel free to 'tag' yourself and 'be my facebook friend' if you're in em!

edit: that's a lot of exclamation marks but it actually was that exciting.

Post by: Lunica on December 09, 2008, 02:15:40 PM
Cool, I'm probably in that one too :P I guess I should write a short review to fill in the stuff Maarten left out. First of all, we had a great time, both Floris and Ryan were nice guys, and it was nice to meet Andy, Maffymaff and MacBastard (who we already knew from last time) :)

Luckily, we had no transport problems this time - (Except issues with my passport - the picture page is falling out because of a production mistake, so the people weren't sure if they could let me through) it all went pretty smooth, all the way from Amsterdam - Schiphol airport - Bristol airport - Bristol Temple Meads train station - train to Taunton - Bus to Minehead.

The first day, I wasn't really "crazy" about a lot of the shows. Melvins 83 was cool to have seen, but they played early, and the sound just wasn't loud enough. European sound people tend to turn up the sound later in the evening when the headliners (were there any?) play. So yeah, it was fun to hear/see it, and they all played good. Especially Matt Lukin.

Same thing with big business. They played great like always, but the volume just wasn't loud enough.

I thought Torche was cool, but I didn't see anything, except for a cowboy hat once in a while, and a bold head on the other side of the stage once or twice, which is probably why I didn't get as into it as I think I would if I could see everything. The sounds was GREAT though. It was the first band I saw there that really had a great sound setup, and from what I could see, it seemed like they had a lot of fun on stage, and the crowd really liked it.

Fantomas was good with Dale, he got the job done, although I do prefer to see them with Lombardo. It was nice and tight, and cool after seeing the directors cut movies on tv.

The second (the first normal) melvins show was better than the 83 one. The sound was great this time around. And Buzz's vocal harmonies were great, but the choice of songs didn't really satisfy me - probably because I've seen them too many times on the last few tours with BB. It was mostly (I think more than half actually) newer songs, and not many surprises. The second show was also good, but I got too annoyed by some stupid guy with a dirty mohawk who was jumping into people, so I didn't get into the show at all. I know this isn't the bands fault, because they did play all the songs really good, its just that there is a limit to how many times seeing the same songs being played will entertain me. I was also hoping for more special appearances and collaborations. Mike Patton only did TWO shows on the whole festival, and only with Fantomas. When I first heard he was gonna be curating it with the Melvins, I was sure the bigband were gonna play (not that its the band i would want to see the most, but still), and I thought maybe tomahawk or peeping tom, kaada, or some other collaborations would take place - maybe even with Rahzel or D

I saw him on the last night, I really enjoyed it. It was fairly rock. He had a live drummer and some bits of it had a hardcore (punk) type beat. I was very drunk though. My nose started bleeding after a while so I left. I got the album on the way back home and it is poo.

If these things are for getting exposed to stuff you'd usually steer clear of then Vocal Sampling are my find of the weekend. Their version of Hotel California had me giggling, with them not at them.

On a minus note ISIS were probably the worst of the weekend, I like them on record but live they're just dull unless you like synchronised swaying and fretboard-staring.

Everything else I saw I enjoyed but regret not seeing Porn due to tired/old/boring-ness. All in all a sucessful mission if only for my mate coining the phrase 'Snivlemites'.

I could have sworn it was Straight Edge... oh well, I'll take your word for it. I was not sober. Also, I know Buzzo is not in Porn but I thought I'd read that he joined the melee at ATP. I guess not. I've just updated the whole thing with hyperlinks and corrections anyway.

Also here's a short but quite cool bit of video from backstage after the first night, with Mike Patton complimenting Os Mutantes on their fantastic show (apparently I can't do code yet):

During one of the Butthole Surfers shows, Gibby said to the audience, right before they went into another song "I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees - now, who said that?", no one responded. Actually, I thought he just took a piss and used one of his own made up quotes or something. So when me and Lunica were watching Repo Man yesterday, and Bud (Harry Dean Stanton - fucking excellent actor) said that quote, Lun recognized it, and we both felt very smart for at least a minute.

Thanks....Trying to get more put up.  Found out I can use the crappy software that came with the video camera to do some minimal editing....

I'm working on getting some of the Melvins second night stuff up.  Also some BHS and a few other things.

Yeah, nice work with these!

I have a bit of a favour to ask also, does anyone have the last song of the Dillard Melvins set, the 'Sunshine of Your Love' one? In any format at all? I'd love to hear it again. I know it was on dimeadozen a while ago but I can't get onto that :(

All I've heard of it is this one minute clip on youtube:

Thurston Moore just moving his hand randomly up and down the bass on that Porn video is making me laugh, dunno why :)

From what I gathered, March of Crimes hasn't been around for a long time......Just a band that was around Seattle back in the day.

Ok, cool! I still hope the lineup w/Dillard puts out some new stuff. Like a 7" or two or something

Supposedly they're going to work on 3-4 new songs......Maybe a 7 inch, or an ep?

Very cool.   'I Don't Know' is great, especially the second part.  The SoYL jam is groovy.
