Title: Melvins @ Double Door Chicago - 5.18.09
Post by: SirDrinksalot on May 02, 2009, 01:22:26 PM
A warm & fuzzy HELLO to all of you fine peoples! Finally, a forum worth joining. Just curious if any of you will be attending this show and/or the Big Business show the night before(!!!) at the Bottom Lounge. I'll be the tall, bony, bespectacled chap drinking gin & tonics while pretending it's my first time in the CITY. Cheers all!

Only in that "gay priest with ass-cancer on a meth-n-poppers bendo" kind of fashion. I'll actually be escorted by 2 inordinately cute lasses who also breathe Melvinism, so there you go: not THAT creepy. And Pork Mountain is got-dam delicious. Reckanize!

Feel the love. I'm just trying to stir up a little pre-show mini-drinkfest. Also, who's thinking there might be a good chance of some Buzz/Dale love gracing the Big Bizzies' show? The Melvins have the 17th off, so...

You're on, Glen. I call 'em Thickburger and Little Thickburger, because Christina is basically a tall version of Heather. Anywhoozle, buy either of them a Pink Taco (Patron and Watermelon [it's the Debbul!]) and they'll be your friend for life. Now let's grab that glass and break some stone houses!

"Damnit (your name here)!!! I'm not from Hollywood, I'm not going to fuck your mouth, and my time is very important!" So there's gonna be more people onstage than off? Sweet! C'mon, let's do a roll call or something. Anyone on the board going to this show?

That's good enough, Paul! See you and Ben at the show. I'll be in my trusty Springfield Armory XD hat, flanked by two saucy birds who look like Suicide Girls from the late '50's. Now who wants SHOTS!!!

Fucking amazing! Once again, sorry but I suck at keeping track of setlists. I'm pretty sure it was exactly the same as NYC. I did recognize the Wings song, Suicide in Progress, The Bit and With Teeth amid the expected early set and Houdini. What was great is that the whole thing was seamless from beginning to end. 2 hours straight of live Melvins! =D> Trevor did his bass head pointed to the ground trick. Not much to say about the crowd. I hung out in the back and headbanged and threw horns up in the air. Got sloppy drunk and talked with Buzz for a good while after the show. Actually this girl and I were out on Milwaukee Ave and we met some transient kids that smoked us up and right when the weed hit us :toke: we looked over and Buzz was chilling outside talking to people so we went over. We talked to him for a little while but I was retarded drunk and high but he was nice and said Big Business are definitely still a part of the Melvins. They're not going away. :D Ummm, that was my 7th time seeing them and I would have to rank it towards the top for sure. It's hard to top when I saw them open for Tool and the Jello show they did at the Double Door. Oh, and btw the Double Door kicks ass. I know some will disagree but I think actually sounds awesome in there. It's got a deep sound to it and it's perfect for the Melvins.

Oh man, it was great. The show was sold out so it was a good thing I bought tickets way in advance. They started at about 9:30, so 30 minutes after they were supposed to, which wasn't too bad but we were pretty antsy at that point. The '83 set was pretty rockin' but was a little samey after a while. After probably a half hour Dillard started banging on a drum towards the front of the stage, and Dale took over behind the drumset and they played Ballad of Dwight Fry sans bass. They also played Suicide in Progress, Oven, Black Bock (!), Its Shoved and Let God Be Your Gardener sans bass (not in that order) before Trevor came out and they started playing Hag Me. It was great, they played all of Houdini (obviously) but in a different order than the studio or live album. All of it was really great and heavier than I've seen them play in a while. Dillard came out again during Spread Eagle Beagle and Trevor also banged on a drum for a while. I'm not the biggest fan of Spread Eagle Beagle, but they kept my attention the whole time and I don't think they played it for 10 minutes which also helped. After that Buzz came back out and the finished the show with With Teeth and The Bit. Overall an amazing show and a lot more bang for your buck than I thought it would be, since I thought it was just going to be Melvins '83 then a break then Houdini. It was actually a great career retrospective, and a really cool experience since they haven't played Houdini live too much and certainly haven't played with Dillard very much at all.

Thanks for confirming all of those songs pAUL! That was awesome the way they went into Dwight Fry without any pause. The Bit, holy fucking christ that song rules live. And I think some were confused on the NY thread. Matt Lukin wasn't playing bass, that was Dale. Buzz introduced him as Matt last night too. Har har.

That was just Fucko being confused. Buzz has introduced Dale as Lukin at every Melvins83 show.

*Threadstarter shows up late to his own fucking party*

Everything stated above is 100% true. Same setlist as NY & Boston, with Houdini shuffled up.
Personal highlights: Talking to a 50+ y/o black gentleman before the show started about Frank Zappa and King Crimson, then singing Black Bock together(!) while he occasionally screamed "you're the BEST, Buzzo!" at the top of his lungs.

Hag Me and Joan of Arc have to be the heaviest live experiences of my life (thus far).

Cool couple offering tiny Heather a place at the ledge of the bar to stand/sit so she could see.

Buzz leaning on a minivan outside after the show, and me finally getting a chance to shake the man's hand and thank him for 25 years of excellence. Also asking him to tell Dale congrats on Cassius and, flashing his gold tooth, saying "Right on, I will."

Meeting too many cool people to remember between Sunday and last night.

The sound at the Double Door was impeccable, and this was easily the best concert I've seen in years, if not EVER!

To all who will be attending the remaining shows: Buckle the fuck up, and enjoy yourselves. You're about to be ravaged! Cheers all!
