What do you think?
Haven't seen any track by track accounts of the CD yet, and I won't be downloading before I buy the CD.
well it's a first. the Melvins have let me down. i hope the version i downloaded is a joke because it fucking SUCKS. there's 4, maybe 5 good tracks on the whole thing. the rest sounds like the Melvins trying to be Girl Talk.
the only tracks i found worthwhile (worthwhile? they actually kick ass!) were the remixes by Matmos, Panacea, Sunroof!, and Kawabata Makoto does this painfully crazy remix of Dr. Geek. there's a couple others that would be really cool if it weren't for the shitty rapping. i hate to say it but i'm glad i didn't buy this because i would have been pissed off. easily my least favorite Melvins record.
hahahahahaha, whew!!!
The only track I have heard off this is the Lee Ranaldo remix of Eggnog which wasn't too bad I guess. I don't know what remixes generally sound like because I stay away from them for the most part, but a Melvins remix is a must. :toke:
I like noise rock and I love Melvins....
but I do not like Melvins being remixed into rock-less noise.
It's got it's moments.
The cover is cool...
It does say Melvins on it.
other than that, eh..
This reminds me of Sammy Hagar, always.

I'm going to give it a bit more chance, though. Especially as I just found out my (cordless) headphones weren't tuned in properly. duh.
I've heard it about 3 times now. I really like it but I don't think it's going to appeal to anyone that doesn't already like noise music. There's some tracks that stand out more than others but I think it works best to just listen to the album in one sitting, since it's really a gigantic sound collage.

i really like that bonus track. its more of a 'collage', which is what i had hoped for.
Just picked this up a little while ago, so I am quite happy to finally have it. Although I am only on the 2nd song, I have a feeling the rest will be just as great. The beginning of Christoph Heemann's track sounds a lot like the beginning to They Must All Be Slaughtered from Honky. Just started playing V/Vm's track and I really dig it too. I know basically nothing about "noise" music and remixes in general but so far this has surpassed my expectations. Now I can only hope a vinyl version is on its way soon

sorry. that sarcastic quip wasn't really necessary.
heres my question: did pretty much every remixer feel it necessary to add that complete fuzz distortion sound to their track? you know what I mean. the part where it could be any number of instruments but the distortion is bottomed right out so it just kinda goes "KKKKKKKK!!"
*and while he makes his K's he brings up phlem from his throat*
About half way through listening to it. So far my favorites are Eye & Matmos.
They didn't have it at my local mega-entertainment-chain-superstore. They had Houdini though.
so far, I think this will be getting lots of heavy rotation in my cd player. This is kind of what I would like to hear on the next Melvins studio album; lots of "noise/experimentation" along with their normal, heavy as donkey balls stuff.
I'm listening this right now...

I like it quite a bit. This is definitely going to be in the "separate the men from the boys" category with Prick and Colossus of Destiny.
I do have to say that I'm finding it hard to listen to all the way through. I like all of it, but it tends to make me want to break out the original albums when I recognize the sources (that's pretty much what hapens with remixes in general though).
Anyone want to try to come up with a list of what was the source material for what tracks? I know a few, but there's enough stuff coming from enough directions and some of the pieces are small enough that it's harder than I assumed it would be.
Anyone know where i can hear the fake leak? It sounds funny.

Kinda like the Hiro Noodles track, which uses Black Stooges, Charmicarmicat, Cow, the first song off the Buzzo EP, and I think something else too.

Actually he uses vocals, modular synthesizers, a theremin, and effects pedals in addition to a box of coins. I think a Masonna remix would've been pretty cool.

btw, review from aQ (aquarius):
Ah, the mighty Melvins, we've been into 'em for longer than we care to admit (put it this way, some of you reading this weren't yet born when we were first freaking out over the absurd heaviness of Ozma). They can do no wrong, or when they do "wrong" it's 'cause they meant to (i.e. Prick). Fans know that the Melvins don't need any help from anybody when it comes to making fucked up sounds. Pretty much every album of theirs has got at least totally WTF? track on it. They even have a few ENTIRE albums that confusionally consist of nothing but, such as the aforementioned Prick. So, imagine if the Melvins DID get some help, or rather, don't imagine, listen to this new all-remix album and hear for yourself! That's right, what could be cooler than the Melvins? How 'bout the Melvins screwed and chopped (if only! they should have gotten Swishahouse involved) by a bunch of other extreme/avant music mavens? Check it out: Eye Yamatsuka, Christoph Heemann, V/VM, John Duncan, Matmos, Lee Ranaldo, Merzbow, David Scott Stone, Panacea, Sunroof!, Kawabata Makoto, farmersmanual, Void Manes, RLW, and $peedranch! Dunno who Void Manes is (sounds black metal) but the rest of 'em are well known experimental/electronic/noise artists you're probably all familiar with. Not sure if the Melvins themselves picked 'em, or Ipecac did, but it's an impressive roster, just the folks to remix the Melvins catalog in gonzo, Plunderphonics fashion. No, these aren't "normal" remixes. Rather than having just a single song to play with, the participants were apparently asked to take a whole Melvins album and turn it into their "own" track.
Maybe you're wondering, is this noisy? Yes. Starts off that way certainly with Eye from the Boredoms' "Washmachine Sk8tronics". Endlessly chugging guitar riffage, gobs of distortion and shrill garbled electronics. Good grief, by the time you get to the end, which brings in the sounds of skateboards, it's hard to imagine who among the other remixers could top this, or how. Cleverly, the next track takes a totally different tack, Christoph Heemann's quietly droning "Emperor Twaddle Remix" being an abstract and (mostly) lovely respite from the noisy shenanigans that start up again on the very next cut, V/VM's "She Chokes Her Dying Breath & Does It In My Face", which proves that anything current noiseniks like Wolf Eyes and Shit & Shine ever did, the Melvins did it first, provided you listen to 'em with the assistance of V/VM. This sounds more like Merzbow than the latter track remixed by Merzbow himself, whose contribution to this disc is equally distortodelic but perhaps more rhythmic.
That brings us to track 4, the aforementioned John Duncan mix, which for the first time on this disc sounds like could actually be something from an actual Melvins album. With a heavy percussive onslaught and droning guitar, it's like an extended intro to a real Melvins song, but then when you think the rock is gonna kick in, instead you get low-end heartbeat pulsations and high-end electronic sizzle. Again, whomever programmed this disc did a fine job, 'cause that segues quite nicely into the clicks and cuts techno makeover that the Matmos boys do for the Melvins on "Linkshander". Heck we all might like techno better if it ALWAYS had the ominous doom-drone thing going on in the background, and spacey sci-fi effects, that this track does.
Lee Ranaldo's "Eggnog Trilogy" starts off with the first easily recognizable Melvins material on here so far, including even snippets of Buzz's vocals. This takes over from Duncan's cut as the track that sounds the most like it could be the Melvins themselves, but at the same time clearly isn't entirely. And, gosh, there's plenty more highlights, we'll not describe them all, except to say that Panacea's "electroclash" remix indeed sounds like that (rad!), and Sunroof! succeed in transmuting the Melvins into something that sounds more like their own hazy shining dronemusick, lovely.
Most of the remixers delve into the realm of digital glitch and out-and-out noise, with a small minority opting instead for calm and quiet. Tape speed manipulation, pitch shifting, extreme distortion, sudden edits, that's mostly the modus operandi here and the Melvins can take it, somehow keeping their unique musical persona intact. Though it will be challenging, trainspotting Melvins fanatics can have good fun trying to figure out what songs and/or albums each track is plundering.
Lastly, we can't review this without mentioning that a good friend of ours first heard the John Duncan remix while riding in a Lamborghini speeding through the Italian Alps -with- John Duncan. How cool and/or strange is that? While you might not be listening to this in a luxury sports car, more likely in your own home, we're sure you'll get a big kick out of it too, along with all the other remixes...
Track 2 is also recognizeable. Track 11 at the beginning has one of my latest favorite drum tracks, but as more oft than not, can't name it. It's either from Stag or Pigs, havn't relistened. been checkin out, yes, I'll say it again Mind the Drift. Track 4 put goodie two-shoes in my head.

"More like SHITken SHITch if you ask me!"
http://markprindle.com/melvinsa.htm#chicken (http://markprindle.com/melvinsa.htm#chicken)
Prindle's review, 2 out of 10 and I have to say I agree :)
Yeah, more like SHITken SHITch if you ask me!!! Good Gravypants, what a terrible record this is. The band came up with a clever idea -- ask a bunch of experimental artists to create original 'remix' tracks not from Melvins songs, but from entire albums! -- and the artists responded by making a bunch of high-pitched noise interspersed with overdistorted buzzing. Great work, talented men of 'experimental' music! You've succeeded in creating the absolute WORST record in the entire Melvins catalog (aside from Shit Sandwich, whose title is so similar to Chicken Switch that you have to wonder if the Melvins are playing a joke on us here). Prick may have been frustrating and Colossus Of Destiny somewhat dull, but this is the first time the Melvins have released a record that is actively, brutally, infuriatingly ANNOYING.
I had actually intended to begin this review with the comment "It must be nice to not be able to play a musical instrument!" but according to online sources, most of these artists actually can -- so what on Earth drove them to convert classic Melvins works into unrecognizable, unlistenable shit racket!? Here are just a few of the highlights you'll encounter if you accidentally drop $16 into a record store clerk's hand and yell "Chicken Switch!":
RLW's "Over From Under The Dog, Girl & Boy Treatment" - High-pitched noise and low hum. Then more high-pitched feedback. Brilliant.
Farmers Manual's "disp_tx_skel_mach_murx" - This Viennese electronic music and visual art group brings us a difficult but extremely rewarding track featuring annoying vocal samples, digital squiggles, high-pitched signals, drumstick tapping, a voice saying "No" over and over again, then more squiggles, some pish-posh noises and even more high-pitched noise. Genius.
Christoph Heemann's "Emperor Twaddle Reemix" - This German musician takes intelligent avant-garde sonics to a whole new level in this slow quiet drone that's suddenly interrupted by a blast of cacophonous drums and high-speed guitar. Until somebody invents a new word that is four or five times stronger than "Godlike," this track will remain sadly free of appropriate superlative.
David Scott Stone's "Prick Concrete/Revolution M" - This longtime Melvins associate took that "Aaaaaaah" voice thing from Prick and just fucked around with it for several minutes. At first it sounded like a worthless piece of shit to me, but then somebody told me it was an outstanding piece of work from a true experimental virtuoso, so now I realize that it's just "challenging."
V/Vm's "She Chokes Her Dying Breath And Does It In My Face" - This infamous British 'artist hacker' lives up to his renegade reputation by 'hacking' out an overdistorted noisy annoyance that is most likely several songs being played at the same time. Pointless and stupid? No! Avant-garde!
Sunroof!'s "The Silky Apple Butter Of Youth" - Apparently this guy was in Skullflower, but I could've sworn Skullflower didn't play swishly smooth synth washes of Eno-ized boredom twaddle. Therefore, this unexpected change of style is difficult but rewarding. And by 'reward," I of course mean 'piece of shit.'
It's awful. It is simply AWFUL. Prior to its release, some clever nellie leaked a FAKE download onto the Internet, featuring things like Melvins riffs mixed with the vocals to "My Milkshake Brings All The Boys To The Yard," a funny reiteration of "Theresa Screams," and Bad Company's album track "Feel Like Makin' Love" in its entirety. Though the majority of the fake download was worthless noise, it was STILL BETTER THAN THE ACTUAL ALBUM.
I myself enjoy a total of two songs on Chicken Switch. A few others have their moments: Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo includes some funny spoken samples in his piece, Boredoms vocalist Eye Yamatsuka lays down some massive drums and chugging phased noise, and Matador Records duo Matmos creates a pretty wicked bass-driven song that unfortunately drags on forever with no changes. But as for full tracks that I can enjoy and respect from start to finish, the only 2 artists (out of 15!!!) that come through are (A) legendary Japanese noisemaker Merzbow, who converts a feedback-distortion loop into a hypnotic musical hook before piling on sick random computer noises, and (B) something or somebody called "Void Manes," who screwballs with the rhythm, bass line and ambient noises of "Night Goat" to convert it into something even creepier than its source material. If only the rest of the remix artists had the exact same musical taste as me, this could've been a great album.
It's the MELVINS, for Pete's sake. How hard could it be to take their already great music and make something good out of it? More to the point, why on Earth would you convert it into a bunch of piercing electronic feedback and tuneless go-nowhere distortion!? Again, I'm tempted to answer, "Because you have no talent!" but rumor sources claim that this conclusion is simply not true. I don't ferret out experimental music myself so I wouldn't know one way or the other. But the fact that most of these songs are irritating in the exact same way begs the question of how 'experimental' these artists really are. In fact, I'm starting to suspect that, just like any '60s burnout who claims he was just "experimenting" with drugs, these guys are practicing nothing but self-indulgence.
In conclusion, 10 of these 15 tracks are among the worst and least thoughtful piles of amateurish noisemaking in my entire 500,000,000,000-piece record collection.
You: "I know it's a difficult listen, but it's very rewarding!"
Me: "Anybody could create this garbage. ANYBODY."
You: "Oh yeah? Then why haven't they?"
Me: "Because they know it SUCKS!"
You: "Look, a bird!" (*bird flies by, takes shit on Holy Bible gripped in the loving hands of a small child*)

Anyone have a link for the fake download? I am not going to exude as much hatred as Black Santa about this record, but I will say it is easily my least favorite melvins record and I think it could have been much better. This coming from a guy that loves the Prick record. I respect the fact that the Melvins are fans of these artists' work but the CD has no "feel" to it at all if that makes any sense. It just goes from track to track never really grabbing your attention unless you are studying the tracks trying to solve which CD - Which song the artist is using. Anyway if the fake one is indeed better it is worth the time spent listening to it to make that choice. Prick 2 would have been good........
Prick 2 would have been too easy. Records like Chicken Switch is what Melvins are all about. I think the next real album will be killer. :-$

I guess if you like songs to be actual songs than this isn't for you, but this is pretty cool piece of sound collage and each track has an identity with it still working as an album. I think, anyway. Also, Washmachine Sk8tronics- Even the rock guys should like this. It really rips. It has a part where it sounds like the song is a giant machine that charges up in each headphone. What's not to like?
I'm not suprised Prindle didn't like it, but his top rated Melvins albums are way different than mine and I'm more of a timbre and mood man while he enjoys loud guitars and the "pop hooks" and noise, but when it's repeated in a sick parody of a riff. Also, I don't think the man owns a pair of headphones due to the frequent references on his site to jamming his head between the speakers to make out whats going on in the mix.

What I meant: Melvins have dropped these sort of albums on us over the years.....with the first Prick album, Stoner Witch followed. Then COD came out in '01...HAT followed that.
Now it's Chicken Switch in '09....All I'm saying is that chances, according to history, the new album will probably be pretty good if we follow this pattern.

Since you bring that single up.....
If this is common knowledge, I am sorry....If I start my copy of Boss hoss and let it play for a few seconds then spin the turntable in reverse and let it go again it plays the song normal, not backwards.
Maybe it will be hailed as a great album in ten years' time... :-k

disappointment? really?? It's another special gift from the melvins.
I've gotten too use to their genius, I needed to express my enthusiasm, I can't them them for granted.
I got this for christmas and really dig it. When waiting to hear it, I stopped by to see what everyone here thought of it. I was a little worried by some of the reactions. I was expecting no structure to the tracks, but was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting to not like at least half the tracks, again, I was pleasantly surprised and really only feel iffy on one or two tracks. It is solid and has more variety than Colossus, which I also like.
i have a problem to listen to this in its entirety. its a bit shit, really
Well, I've had the album for months now and I STILL haven't really come to a conclusion if I like it or not. Since I have nothing better to do I'll try writing a review now.
1. Now this is a pretty cool remix! Loud, semi catchy, and heavy! I think it's a Black Stooges remix. I was kind of expecting the rest of the album to be more like this.
2. Basically the Honky intro repeated for 4:21min. Not exactly a bad track but it just makes me want to hear Honky instead.
3. The main riff of Grinding Process looped while a loud as Merzbow track plays over it. I'd like it more if the noise was mixed a bit lower but it still has a bit of charm to it.
4. The Lysol intro with twice as many drums! Then when it gets to the REALLY heavy part it ends abruptly and is replaced with the middle part of Let It All Be. Once again, not exactly bad but just makes me want to hear Lysol or The Bootlicker instead.
5. Is this a remix of a Melvins song?!? Maybe something off Ozma? I still have no idea but I actually like this one.
6. Have you ever thought, "Man, I wish I could listen to the first 3 songs from Eggnog but I only have 4:25 to do it. What should I do?!?" Well now your problem is solved with this other wise pointless remix.
7. Now Merzbow is up to bat and this track is pretty decent if you like Merzbow. If not you'll hate it. VERY LOUD! I think it's another Lysol remix.
8. Semi-Melvin David Scott Stone remixes a funny track from a funny album. I laugh at how ridiculous it is but I don't know if I'd call it good.
9. When I hear the word "remix" for some reason techno usually comes to mind. This is the only song like that one this album. Ironically, because of it's traditional approach it ends up standing out from the rest of these tracks! I really like it.
10. Does this even count as a remix? What exactly is being remixed!?! It doesn't sound the slightest bit like ANY Melvins track. As far as I know the guy created all of this himself. Regardless, this is my least favorite track.
11. A familiar drum beat followed by ridiculously loud noise that doesn't resemble any Melvins track. Eh, I'm gonna pass on this one.
12. After the last two tracks my patience is beginning to run thin and this track does nothing to change my mind. Noisey and sounds nothing like any Melvins track.
13. So literally after 13:24min there is finally another track that actually has a recognizable Melvins riff! It's so exciting to hear the Night Goat bass line that you won't even care if it's bad at this point. But then the Prick sample comes in and it quickly goes downhill. It's just a bit too disjointed. Random Melvins samples come and go one after the other and they aren't really put together in any interesting way. At least I know it's the Melvins!
14. If I could hear a dog whistle I imagine it would sound like this track. It's pretty annoying and very few Melvins clips are used.
15. If I had a ton of Melvins samples on a keyboard and just hit them every now and then at random that's what this track would sound like.
I think the problem with this album is that the remixers felt like they needed to out weird the Melvins instead of just simply making it good. Dalek's remix of Dawn of the Locust was great! I even preferred Al Jourgensen's remix of Enchanted Thoughtfist. But even the good remixes leave just a little bit more to be desired.
So there's Chicken Switch in a nutshell. I'm still not sure if I like or dislike it but as a huge Melvins fan I'm glad to have it in my collection. The artwork is enjoyable and there is just enough here to keep me entertained from time to time. It's just a shame this didn't turn out better.
I think track 3 is hilarious. And the Grinding Process riff is pretty great, anyways.

I scanned your post and ironically this caught my eye.
I literally love this track. The other night I couldn't help but play it 3 times in a row.
It's hard, and somewhat pointless to try and decipher this album for original song samples and technicalities.
This album is an entity of itself. I'm hoping for another one. I'd like the melvins to give the masters for the new album to these guys and have them completely destroy them, produce it like this first, then release the originals a decade from now.
yeah, I listened to it a lot when I first got it, but it lost it's flavor too soon.
this is a far cry from what I was looking forward to hearing.
I swear roll another one is too hard to get through trying NOT to laugh.
but yeah, honestly...give ME a few melvins tracks to work with, and I could come up with something a LOT more creative...well at least you can tell by listening to this thing who listens to the most melvins...
theres just too many obscure riffs and parts you could do MAGICAL and BEAUTIFUL things with, as far as "remixes" concern me, I was hoping for more weird combinations of spare parts of melvins tunes that sort of make for a way more serious monsterpiece.
I was not challenged in any way except for my attention span and patience, fuck you ipecac, you could have EARNED my 16.99 at least...you KNOW you could have done something better and yet that was the irony you WANTED wasn't it?
I don't know about you, but it's like we all new it was going to be a "step child" sort of an album.
I would have done something better or just different in many areas of this CD that to me, would make this thing the truly Classic album this SHOULD have been.
it's not bad or anything, it just had a lot of potential to be something greater!
This is the album I've been listening to the most lately. It's like a big song where each track is a different note.
I wasn't in any hurry to get to this one based on all the negative feedback on this board, but was pleasantly surprised when I finally broke down, strapped on some headphones and dove into this mother. Each track has something worth going back to and like someone had said earlier, it's just another special gift from Melvins.
I bought this for the first time a few months ago. It's a decent record but not something I'd listen to very often nor something I'd listen to driving anywhere.
The Sunroof! track is probably the most fascinating of the bunch. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be something of it's own and not a remix off anything Melvins at all! Kinda like how the Throbbing Gristle remix on Sausages isn't actually a cover. It strikes me in that sense.
If I recall correctly, it's something from Ozma run through signal processors. There were 3 or 4 versions submitted and that was the favorite.
Everyone should look into sunroof and related (skullflower, hototogisu, etc).
The one track on it with the most non-Melvins material is speedranch.
The most surprising in how direct it is is the John Duncan track, considering his other work.
And while I'm at it, other interesting Chicken Switch trivia:
Eye Yamatsuka accidentally sent his Melvins remix to Black Dice and vice versa. The mixup was cleared up with then member Hisham Baroocha, who now performs periodically as part of Boredoms. There was more than one version of his remix.
Each participant was sent a full album to use as source material, to do whatever they wanted with it. Some of them specifically requested the albums they used. Some "cheated" and used multiple albums.
An obscure English artist did a remix but was dropped when he started making crazy outrageous demands. Too bad - his was great.
A prominent European noise artist accepted, then refused to participate after having a mental breakdown and making outlandish, untrue statements about another participant.
another bit of trivia
the fake leak 2 months before the official release date was devoured more than the original release!
this confusion caused the album to 'underperform'. people already had the pre-release fake tracks and loved
them so they never bought the 'real' album!
It didn't bomb. Ipecac actually sold a decent number, especially considering that it wasn't a traditional Melvins release. This might have had something to do with Pitchfork giving it a high rating in their review. Who knows.
The fake leak came out a couple of weeks before the CD was released. I'm still curious about who did that, as those tracks were pretty funny.
Still amusing to me that you could find this block of offensive noise in places like Best Buy and mall stores.

I have the fake version on cd somewhere. It's pretty funny from what I recall. At first you can't tell if it's a joke or not but it becomes more apparent as the album goes on. I remember one professional reviewer actually reviewed the fake leak and gave it a 6 out of 10 with mostly positive remarks. It was taken down within a week.
From Mark Prindle (cause I'm having trouble remembering what was on it), "Prior to its release, some clever nellie leaked a FAKE download onto the Internet, featuring things like Melvins riffs mixed with the vocals to "My Milkshake Brings All The Boys To The Yard," a funny reiteration of "Theresa Screams," and Bad Company's album track "Feel Like Makin' Love" in its entirety."
Edit* I found and relistened to my cd today. Hahaha, I forgot how ridiculous it is. My favorite track is the rapping over the live version of Cherub. Comedy gold!
that's great. thanks luck.
Never heard the fake Leak Stuff, Curious now. :o
The Silky Apple Butter of Youth is such a great track. I love to throw every Melvins song I own onto my ipod and put it on 'random'. If you've ever done this, you may notice that many of the tracks, regardless of era, recording style, singer etc, meld together nicely, but when a song like that comes on, you realize how special it is. A true gem in the Melvins' canon.
love the John Duncan remix track
Of everything I own that says MELVINS, I think I still enjoy this the least, except for maybe the Electric Flower remix disc.
This is a bit sad because there is some great work on this disc. There's also some really, really annoying stuff.
Thinking back to my FIRST LISTEN: So this is mostly garbage distorted noise and super boring droney stuff. I kind of like the one with the skateboard and the rhythmic one with the chromatic descending synthy sound (oh that's Matmos, that's why). Somebody totally didn't get the memo that this was a noise album, and sent in a cheesy hardstyle techno remix, ha! And someone did almost nothing to almost all of Eggnog (turns out it's Lee Ranaldo, aka the George Harrison of Sonic Elderly Youth). I'm sure I heard "Jeff... Thomas" on here again somewhere... flashback to "Shitstorm."
By the THIRD LISTEN: Favorites are probably the more respected, known sound manipulation artists. Merzbow's is amazing -(wow, how many years did I avoid Merzbow because of that awful Maldoror album?) Matmos of course, David Scott Stone is an honorary Melvin, so not surprising he "gets it". John Duncan's is worth looking forward to. Eye from Boredoms makes the skate sounds. On the bad side, there's one that is just annoying gabber or short attention span drum and bass. There's a lot of distorted bullshit. Some lazy guy named He-man did the "All at Once" trick four minutes into "They Must All Be Slaughtered". And who's this Makoto Kawabata (other than a guy with a Japanese name who made a deep cut on a Melvins noise remix record)? Wait I like that one... a lot.
By the FIFTH LISTEN: Most of the record has opened up and revealed itself. I think I've given over to turning it up, which allows you to hear the subtle stuff happening in the low and high registers. Some of it is still annoying, but the album does have a way of pulling hooks out of thin air. I'm bored trying to identify the source of samples, and I'm generally bothered when the sample is too obvious. I prefer when the sound is at least almost unrecognizable. When I Youtubed some of these, it introduced me to more soundscapes and other highlights by these artists, some of which I like much more than their Chicken Switch contributions.
This leads me to my ultimate summary and perhaps my biggest criticism of The Melvins in the last ten years:
When working with collaborators, Buzz (and Dale) seem to shrink away from asserting their taste and talent for editing/arranging. I love The Crybaby, but there are songs that could have stood with some editing or a different mix. Everybody Loves Sausages has some low points (particularly the Jam cover - I much prefer Haze on that disc with "Smash The State" and M*O*F). Hold It In is a great effort, but it just could have been tightened up in a few saggy places. I worry the Cranky Messiah has lost some of his Crank, at least beyond the core bandmates. If there was a Pigs of the Roman Empire with 50% less Lustmord, I'd buy 10 copies tomorrow (no disrespect to the guy; he does great work). Anyway, when you compare these records to the immaculate sequencing and pacing of The Bulls and the Bees EP or Hostile Ambient Takeover, all these collaboration records pale in comparison, and not necessarily for lack of content. On Chicken Switch, this lack of editorial assertion is painfully obvious, even to those of us who really dig the album.
If a version like the attached image came out on vinyl, it might have become one of my favorite recent Melvins releases.
PS: I'm all in for Chicken Switch 2, whatever form it might take. I think the concept is great and the Melvins recorded history has so much untouched source material from which to plunder.

Hell, if I listened to COD tonight, I'll give this one a spin the next time I find myself alone
(with no kid or old lady). I bought this used for about $9, when the rest of my haul that
day was about a median price of $3 each. It said "Melvins" on it, so had to own it.
I had already bought Queen and Washingmachine Skatetronics on the wife's iTunes
at about the time it came out. Those are still by far my favorites on the album.
I am an old school remix enthusiast, so I can listen to surf like Queen all day.
Release 7 remix albums of the Melvins in that style, I would be ecstatic.
I've read a lot of negative comments from Melvins fans regarding that track.
Cheasy. Disco. Boring. Sellout.
Fine, I'm not losing any sleep over that. To each his own.
It's not a small Melvins World, after all.
I think I'll make this my next Melvins tape project;

Washingmachine Skatetronics

I agree those are really super awesome tracks,
but what exactly do they have to do with remixes?
When I'm doing a live tape, it's all live, studio is all studio, remix is all remix.
I pulled out a tape I made of the Bessie Boys in '94-Remixes, Live and Bonus Tracks.
It was good, but;
A - I just don't like listening to that stuff all mixed up anymore,
B - I don't know if that works with the Melvins.
Maybe I'll try that next. Their live stuff is like remixes.
Some stuff is just so far from the source.
Tipping The Lion on Sugar Daddy Live comes to mind. I saw them play it in '96.
Buzz and Mark D switched instruments. It was very close to the album version.
The Sugar Daddy version was all hot rodded out. Took me a while to get into it.

How about the stuff the Melvins remixed... Liars, KMFDM, and of course Isis?
Buzz also remixed a Gang of Four track with someone (probably Lustmord, right?). I have that promo CD around here somewhere.
Then maybe the Brothers Collateral track.
"Message Saved" and "Thank You" are pretty much in line with the noise experiments.

Good suggestions. Brothers Collateral is perfect. KMFDM used to be one of my favorites.
I wasn't aware of that collaboration.
Just returning to profess my undying love for SNOW REM REM IBVZ. Anyone with me?
Mostly just this one and Queen for me but I'll have to revisit this, er, masterpiece soon :D

Masterpiece of shit. I forget who coined that term now. For the record, i don't think this album is "shit", just not very listenable as a whole. Some cool individual tracks on this though.

Chicken Switch is one of those cases where I'm more fascinated by the tracks' titles than the actual music.
Anyway,
I gotta revisit that fake leak.
I agree with the popular opinion that it was more entertaining than the real thing.
UPD: ...Actually, I can't find where to download it anymore.
UPD2: FOUND IT!
And reuploaded here (https://mega.nz/#!IAcElZQD!CnrzGQBk3w3UPcBJ8KT7WShywiqdzsC7ePi16LRikRY).
(I take it there shouldn't be a problem with that since it's not an actual Melvins release)

Agreed on some of the individual tracks. Stonerrock.com offered a pretty good take on The Crybaby that fits this record to a tee as well.
"Many of the individual tracks are fine but it doesn't flow well as a "record" or as a whole".
I was thinking about this from the other thread. I wish for some of these they'd done overdubs. Like Dale just freestyle drumming over the speedranch tune would be cool. Hell, I'd take Buzz doing his best TG impersonation on half of them.
Don't fuck with the Merzbow one, though!
I came here to offer basically the same thought I did last year. #-o
Well, I still agree with me.
