Yes indeed, I did get all that stuff for $5. I didn't know what to expect when I sent the money, but that was what I got. After that I had a couple of newsletters and that was that. I've heard rumours of fan club videotapes and other stuff but I never got any of that.
i got that p.i.t.w. newsletter #4 and i got a friend who was in the fanclub to buy me a "we hate you all" shirt. unfortunately i am too fat to wear it. but its still nice to have.

I just checked my Melvins memorabilia. I have 3 (unnumbered) issues of p.i.t.w. (not real newsletters - more like flyers, postcards etc), and then the Melvins newsletter #1 (spring 93), #2 (winter 93/94) and #3 (summer/fall 94).
The last one says "this is newsletter #3 for the Melvins Army, and sadly it is more than likely the last. We are, as we have said before, going to be starting a new fan club in 1995 which will be geared more towards smaller, more frequent mailings and will include more fan club only material and other goodies than the Melvins Army. It will also be slightly more expensive to join; probably around $10. We truly appreciate all of your support, and you will all be kept on a mailing list whether you join the new fan club or not. More info will be coming your way, so please don't send any money until we let you know".
Well, that was the last I heard from the fan club.......

Yeah, I got that tape. I think I still have it somewhere. The pack I had also had the "We HAte You All" T-shirt, the single with "Interstellar Overdrive" on the b-side, and the newsletter with some of the lyrics for Stag. The newsletter and the single were definately destroyed in Katrina. Not sure about the video, still have the shirt.

As this thread has resurfaced I'll add a bit of historical perspective.
I ran that club for the first couple of years of its existence when they were on Boner and got signed to Atlantic. And while everyone definitely got exactly what they deserved, it's true that some people who sent money probably got diddly squat.
The budget for that thing was literally zero for the first year or so. Dale and I figured out what the "starter pack" would be and got all those together around the time that the solo albums came out, and continued to nuance the offering with the release of Lysol and later Houdini, but those guys had no money whatsoever to fund the thing back then. So I would get maybe $100 or so from Dale before they went on tour or whatever (that money spent very fast), and that would have to last until he got back, at which time there still was often no money for more mailings/supplies anyway. I was a one-man show (working and going to school full time also), and ended up spending a lot of my own money doing the layout, photocopying the zines and making the iron-ons (color copies on iron-on paper), printing the membership cards, buying stamps, envelopes, etc. I had a buddy who worked at a copy shop at the time and let me do some extra copy work after hours, thank goodness. Weirdly one of the other employees in that copy shop was the bass player from Camper Van Beethoven, but that's a story for another time.
Please don't get me wrong, I was absolutely thrilled to do all this, I considered it an honor, for reals. And I didn't pay for a Melvins show or any merch for many, many years thanks to Dale (to say nothing of the absolute, unmitigated joy I got from interacting with and running the fan club for the greatest fucking band on earth), but the point is some shit definitely fell through the cracks. My humble apologies to anyone who sent their $5 in and got nothing in return. For every one of you there are 50 people who did, but I know it felt shitty at the time and that's fucked.
I will say that my own inconsistent efforts were nothing compared to getting those lazy fuckers to lift a finger to answer mail, sign glossy 8x10" photos, pay attention, etc. Dale was better about it than the other guys; Buzz (and Joe or Mark, depending on who was on board at the time) basically took a very...uh...hands-off approach.
So we did the three zines mentioned in this thread, and then the esteemed folks at the David Lefkowitz Management Co., the band's management at the time, took over after a while and that's when the Pissing in the Wind stuff started, with the video and all that. That line that Mesteren quotes, "this is newsletter #3 for the Melvins Army, and sadly..." was written by yours truly, as were most of the words in the first three zines. As a designer these days I'm honestly embarrassed by the way those things look now, but none of us had any fucking idea what we were doing, so we did the best we could with the crappy word processing software available to us (well, me...the only person involved with a computer) at the time. But god damn was it fun. I still have all the original pages (or most of them anyhow), all glue-sticked together and hand-assembled, so maybe I'll scan them in color and post them somewhere for you good folks to look at. The black and white copies never came out very well anyhow.
So yeah, that's my two cents from the inside of the process. Oh, and uh, I was member #0001. Beat that!

Sgt. Marjorie is definitely one of the sweetest people I've ever met. I remember sitting watching video of Dale playing once and she leaned over and said, with a glint of pride in her eye and a little smile, "oh he just hits those things so hard!" and then laughed. I saw her at a gig in Tacoma back in 2006 and said hi. I'm not sure if she remembered me but she was still very sweet.

But i suspect that most of the hardcore fans (of which probably frequent this site or other Melvins dedicated fan sites) would tend to already keep on top of any new releases or forthcoming ventures. Although having said that, i am surprised occasionally when a clear fan of the band isn't aware that something new is out or has been out for a few weeks! Perhaps i'm a bit weird but i just check the sites directly and don't pay attention to news feeds or such to notify me.

We don't plan to send out a ton of emails, and we will never sell our contact list to anyone. This list is administered directly from the Melvins camp, not a PR or merch company. This is the horse's mouth.

I'm really starting to think the Melvins are in the process of severing ties with Ipecac. This email thing is a bit weird given Ipecac send out regular newsletters of their bands new releases and upcoming shows, however Ipecac still hasn't mentioned anything about the Melvins having a new album out, admittedly on another label. I haven't listened to that Dale interview with Heavy Mag a second time but I did think I heard him speak of Ipecac in the past tense, something like "our old label".

Social media heavily throttles Melvins posts. Most posts reach less than 5% of followers, many posts even less than that. On top of that, it's plain to see that these platforms are in rapid decline. Users are bailing en masse, so it's not a viable way of communicating.

I signed up a few days ago and I got one email about the upcoming veeps stream. I had to rescue that email from spam filters in both Hotmail and Gmail. Just a warning folks. Check your junk mail. (You may also find the renewal forms for your kids' after school care.)

Did you have to alter your settings or anything to find it in Spam? I have Gmail too and there was nothing for me. I think my settings are mostly on default and can't find anything spam related to tinker with even in the Advanced settings.

i searched "Melvins promo" in my gmail and the email about the livestream from Nov 18 popped right up. i've never set up any filters other than the default though.

The packaging and artwork for the Five Legged Dog release is incredable. Best since Love & Death IMO. When Five Legged Dog arrived in the mail a new name was on the LP shipping box, not Ipecac or BLIXT for that matter.
At the time I thought it was kind of strange that an extra cut of the profits were going to this new entity.
I'll do the math:
Cost of getting a New Release to the consumer, where the money goes:
Ipecac
Vinyl pressing service
LP Jacket Printing
Postal Service
LP Shipping Box manufacturer
Some vendor who puts the LP in the shipping box, addresses the package, and takes said package to the Postal Service.
Profit for the Melvins:
Less than expected

At the moment i'm not overly worried about the lack of Ipecac. If the next release isn't with them though then it will seem awkward.

I still swear to this day I bought the first Fantomas album on import in late 1998 with an Ipecac logo on the back before the label officially started I think in April '99 and then that album was formally given that release date too.
