I love them all but perhaps i'd go with the Maggot/Bootlicker/Crybaby trilogy. That would have been a dead cert had Crybaby been better as i mostly kinda dislike that one bar Divorced, Mine Is No Disgrace and the Yow collabs. Was tempted by the BB era too however i feel that Bride drags that threesome down a little.

I think that The Terror Trilogy (Maggot Bootlicker Crybaby) is more complete, connected and conceptual than others.

The Atlantic triad is perfect for the Grunge moment and movement. The best for new listeners.

What I called Sludge and Doom Trilogy is the milestone of the Melvins, their trademark, which makes them epochal.

Despite everything I chose the last three albums because I love the double drum set and new compositions Buzz.

I'm going to have to say the Atlantic trilogy.  Simply put, it has the most solid records - in songwriting, flow, heavyness, and Melvins quirkiness.  It has what I consider to be their most innovative material, career defining material, and best song selection overall.  Also props to their best production in both album structure and sonic quality.  Yeah. 

In second place I'd probably go for the Bullhead period, despite the songwriting genius of the current trilogy (especially when considering songs like Civilized Worm and Billy Fish).  Bullhead and Lysol are just so full of raw emotion and badassery that they just can't be beat.  Everytime I hear Your Blessened I'm moved to tears.

I think they all tie and it comes down to genre preference.  Not one of those albums sound half assed and you can really tell they put a lot of effort into all of them.

With that said I'm going to go with the latest trilogy, that is until 2012 comes and they have a 4th album out.  As much as I love all the albums the new ones are like crack to me.  If I listen to Houdini once I'll feel satisfied and pick out another cd from my stack.  With the latest albums I usually find my self listening to each of them two or three before putting it back.

And I'll say it again, I think Nude With Boots will become the new Stag and H.A.T.  Misunderstood at first but eventually loved by most fans.  I really love everything about that album.  It may very well be my favorite Melvins album.  Flush/Stupid Creep/ and Savage Hippy have especially been kicking my ass lately.  I've also thought that The Stupid Creep is one of those songs that's easy to overlook but if they played it live it would melt faces.

Had to throw down for the "Terror Trilogy" seeing as the Maggot is my favorite Melvins moment frozen in amber. The Bootlicker is an excellent compliment to the abrasiveness of the Maggot and then you have the Crybaby which sums up the experimental / collaborative nature of this band quite neatly. I like to imagine that Colossus of Destiny is also part of this progression.

Tough question.  The Sludge is how I want to think of the Melvins, so that's the most essential.  The Atlantic just has straight up their best songs, if I wanted to turn someone onto the Melvins, that's where I look.  I really like the diversity of Thee Trilogy: one's heavy as shit, one's a trip, one's hilarious hijinks.  The Big Business Trilogy is easy to swallow but the true strength of this era is how great they are live.  I guess this question just underlines how badass this band is.

I'm going to vote for the Sludge, but I just picked up Thee Trilogy on vinyl and can't go without staring lustfully into the photographic evidence, so I brag unto thee:

Sludge trilogy, hands down.  Nothing puts me in a better mood than lysol. That's got to be my favorite melvins album, but it always seems so short!

Prick/Honky/Colossus of Destiny

Houdini + Stoner Witch, Maggot + Crybaby, Senile Animal + Nude With Boots are all pretty much incontestable duos for me, so it's all down to the third record...
Stag beats both Crybaby and Bride for me... So I went with Atlantic.

As I'm waiting for all this cool new Melvins vinyls to come out suddenly I stopped and thought, fuck these last 3 were just like the Trilogy!!!!

Bulls & the Bees/ Maggot - Both heavy as fuck tripped out awesome Melvins records that smack you in the face!

Freak Puke/ Bootlicker- Both chiller laid back but still crazy, weird awesome records. Melvins pushed the envelope stylistically on both these efforts.

1983/ The Crybaby- ....to sum up both of these records would I would quote Monty Python by saying..."And now for something completely different"  Also, both releases seem to be the band having fun/ almost a side project sorta thing. Both records are totally fun.

There you have it, the new trilogy...Bulls & the Bees, Freak Puke,and 1983.

Had to pick big business era, as it introduced me to the Melvs, But was tempted to sludge because Bullhead is my favorite of all time.

There's great songs in all of them, but it really comes down to the recording quality to determine listenability for me. Here Senile-Nude-Bride takes the cake, unless I can take the Atlantic Trilogy and swap Gluttony for Houdini.

The one that best exemplifies my taste is Maggot-Bootlicker-Crybaby. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but it's not. I love those records and I get tingly looking at the art. It feels like they were recorded to be played privately and I love them. But I can't rank it strongest.

Bullhead-Lysol-Eggnog is probably the trilogy I am most likely to get to know better in the near future. The sonics are not as good, but songs like Your Blessened, Sacrifice, With Teeth, Boris, Antitoxidote seem to represent the crystalization of Melvins genius.

Songs-Gluey-Ozma has some good songs but relatively poor recordings. And they hadn't tapped into all the things I love about Melvins records of the last two decades.

Would you all count Bulls & Bees, Tres Cabrones, and This Machine as the latest trilogy? I am pretty sure Sausages was a compilation and Freak Puke was somehwat a diversion, but I think "We Are Doomed" and the seven originals on Tres represent a powerful phase of Buzz's songcraft leading toward his solo acoustic record.

Poor orphans I still love: Hostile Ambient Takeover, Honky, Prick, Buzz-Dale-Joe, Pigs of the Roman Empire.
