Okay I went ahead and used all 16 submissions and am running the poll for 7 days. You can only vote once so choose wisely :)
Really, riff-wise, nearly all of the songs off of Gluey Porch Treatments were equally creative, intelligent, and emotionally effective, but I like "Heater Moves And Eyes" the most.
Wow POTRE is the current leader.
These should be choices too...
In the Freaktose the Bugs Are Dying
Amazon
Evil New War God
The Mechanical Bride
The Smiling Cobra
Revolve
Honey Bucket
Ahhhh to hell with it i pick that 20 minute pig related thing as it always gets me humming along and bangin my noggin'. Something tells me there's probably Buzzo riffs i like more tho. :? 'Safety Third' anyone??

Well you had your chance to submit them before I made a poll.
Zodiac
POTRE is indeed leading.
a testament to BUZZ's mastery. seeing as thats one of those "abstract" and "ambient" riffs. I'm guessing in its original format (IE: KRANKY KLAUS. errr... SPOOKHOUSE soundtrack) cameron jaime said something to Buzz like "give me something backgroundy yet at the same time horendously intense". and WA LA! you get POTRE riffs.
I voted for CHARMICARMICAT.
why? not so much for the riff sense its all and all fairly simple. its all about the timing. again: a testament to BUZZ's mastery. anybody can CHUGA CHUGA. but can they do it at a painfully slow pace? umm.. no.
POTRE is pretty sweet. Anyone notice how you can play that riff for like 30 minutes and not even notice. What a time thief.
no Night Goat?mmmh, probably because they use to play that song too often..i can't tell what my life would be without the bass intro and Buzz solo

badass indeed -- except it's mark d playing it.

disregarding the fact that its also a
solo and not a
riff.

good point glen!
what's in a riff?
I know the riff norecess speaks of. It's time to listen to the song again, Glen.
I think the Water Glass is pretty awesome actually. I love the first minute or so. Buzz has still got it. I've always loved "Four Letter Woman", "Larry" and "Charmicarmicat" (good call Glen).
I'm really surprised that POTRE is winning so far. It is a great riff though. After this poll closes, lets make other suggestions and then put them against whatever wins in this poll. Agreed?
Have to agree with Larry. That is an awesome jam that I would like to see them do at a show.

but joe plays the solo.
I always thought skeeter was the catchiest metal riff..but it's not the best, the juicy riffs are all on maggot or COD, I was just thinking about how awesome it was they had kevin in the band...*sigh*
I think I voted your blessened...ah well, depends what mood your in.
i voted for hog leg... becauses this song started my love for the melvins.
I'm not voting, this is ridiculous.

sooner or later the suspense will get to him and he'll crack just to see what riff won.
I can see the results without voting.
Who else voted Hung Bunny? Great minds think alike!

Fine, I gave in and voted (for the one I suggested). The one (of two) with no votes so far.
It's like voting Libertarian.
I can't find the 'all of the above' button.

Isn't jigoku Japanese for hell?
Boris is powerful. Authoritative. He is the bringer of hope. He is the bringer of life, the promiser and the overcomer.
Boris has once said unto me "I am Boris. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
charmicarmicat!!!!
One more day to go, get those votes in people. Whatever riff wins this round will go against those who submit more riffs from Melvins songs. It will be limited to 15 including the winner in this round.
It should be a second, separate round. Then take the winners from each and they should be pitted against each other one on one.
That would make more sense...just my opinion.
Okay the winner for round 1 is POTRE! Now I am taking submissions for the first 15 submissons for round 2 to decide who to pit against POTRE.

Alright, forget it. It's evident that no one wants to take part in this any further. POTRE has the greatest guitar riff from Buzz Osborne he ever created. I'm glad that is settled.

if i may speak for myself, i think we all are.
p.s. i would have nominated 'zodiac' for round 2.
The interesting thing about all this is that most songs do actually have more than just ONE riff in them. Sure, there are a few that it is consistently one main riff or that one particular riff is just assumed to be the riff in question...but songs like Zodiac and POTRE have more than one awesome riff. In the case of POTRE there is just a slight variation but still...
We could get down to specifics but I am also happy that it is agreeably settled and we can all move on in life. Phew!!
I couldn't pick one as the best, but The Fool, The Meddling Idiot has had a lot of power with me. When I saw them in 2004 Buzz introduced it as his then favorite song by them (but you know how fleeting his self assesments can be). I think it was the show closer and it just slayed me. I've always loved it, and that moment still ranks as one of the most sonorously pleasant experiences ever.
