some friends and i were at a burger king adjacent to a truck stop in illinois (sapp bros...peru)...and i just happened to look out the window and noticed someone walking across the parking lot with a rather large black man...and he had huge hair (the other guy...not the black man)...and i just stared and said to my friend (who is also a huge melvins fan) "hey...that guy has hair like king buzzo"....he then looked as well and got all excited and said "that's him! that's fucking king buzzo!"...and i just looked back and him and said "yeah...ok...the melvins...here...that'll happen"....he and another friend of mine took it upon themselves to go over to the truck stop to see for themselves...i just sat there eating my food...and about a minute later they both came running back to the table with a look of joy upon their faces..."it's him!...it's them!" is all they could say...but i just sat there...thinking they were just messing with me..."holy shit! it's them! it's the fucking melvins!"...so i got up and walked over to the truck stop...and on my way in...a guy dressed in what appeared to be western wear (right down to the cowboy hat) opened the door to go in...and i muttered something like "that wasn't buzzo"...and it appeared that the cowboy hat guy was talking to himself...and it kind of sounded like he'd said "yes it is"...so i followed my friends into the truck stop...and got about 10 steps in when i saw the wiry hair pointing out over the top of some shelves...and the closer i got...the more it hit me...yes...that was buzzo...and that was dale crover standing next to him...and the guy that had opened the door for me....that was mark deutrom...and all i could do was keep walking and repeating the words "holy" and "shit"...finally i went back and shook buzzo's hand and made small talk...he and dale were looking at some random crap on the shelves...dale held up a dvd that was a best of from the shows COPS...and he asked us if we'd seen it and said it was awesome....more small talk happened...they were on their way to canada (or maybe it was chicago) to play a show with the band skeleton key...more small talk...buzzo said they were practically broke and asked us if we had any money (and dammit...if i would've had any at the time...it would've all went to them)...then dale and buzzo went about their business and i ran out to the car to find something for them to autograph...funny thing is...i was going to bring my cassette copy of HOUDINI to listen to...but i instead picked up nirvana's BLEACH...so that's what i grabbed for them to sign....which they did (well...mark didn't...he just stood off to the side and still appeared to be mumbling to himself)....dale signed his name...buzzo signed "king buzzo likes kurt cobain"....and then they left
that was a good day
sadly...i gave that signed copy of BLEACH to a friend of mine (the other melvins fan) in order to use his car to go and see a girl that i was with at the time (a girl who didn't even know who the melvins were)
yes...i'm a dumbass...and there isn't a day that goes by that i don't think about that
and yes...i realize my story is all jumbled and rambling
but what good story isn't?

I always thought it would be the coolest thing to meet Buzzo until I actually did. He's super nice and it was still really cool and all but there were just uncomfortable vibes, like... I'm so geeked out on the Melvins and know details about his personal life (thanks, Melvins BBS) and, lets be honest, he doesn't know/care who I am other than a fannerd.
All i can do is hope that someday Buzz meets that guy that has his face tattooed on him and that it's awkward.

only member of The Melvins I have met is Dale and it was just a brief hand shake and "you guys played a badass show". I didn't know what else to say without geeking out.
i think i've mentioned this before, but i came across buzz and david scott stone on tom swayers island in disneyland once. happiest place on earth? i think so!! :P
i met them in rochester in 08, we saw them the night before in buffalo then drove in the morning to rochester , smoked a joint and passed out in the car i woke up around noon , sat up and looked out my car window and buzz was about 20 feet away, i was like what the shit ,so we got out and started to talk to him he was just unloading the van, first thing he pulled out was golf clubs so we talked about golf for a bit , we were hungover as shit so we were kinda out of it ,a little awkward but not too bad , got the walsby to get some pics for us , he's a good dude too , then we went to get some beers came back and jarred was just sitting having a smoke so we shot the shit with him for a few and then toshi came over and introduced himself, he's a super nice guy , a brief chat with coady while he brought his drums in , never did get to meet dale but i did yell up at him at the end of the show he was up on the balcony , gave him a big thumbs up he waved and smiled :D
i was at that same show (arrived super late due to traffic and a long line at the border). i stuck around for quite a while after so my wife and a friend who hadn't seen them in 10 or so years could load up on merch. jared was walking around so i alerted my mrs. to that fact-she has a crush on him-and we started shooting the shit with him. a nice gent for sure who jokingly said "you didn't miss anything, we suck" when she told him that we missed the BB set. while she was merch buying i was just milling about and dale kept walking back and forth in front of me and i was WAY to scared to even try to say anything. i was taking drum lessons at the time and didn't want to embarrass myself by saying something like "you're the reason i wanna learn drums. blah blah blah". so i hugged the wall like a puss. although after i thought of how i wanted to ask him about his drum setup from the houdini era with all the weird metal devices...
