The title of Track 3 seems somehow old-fashioned, since even Incubus had a version of it in their video to "Megalomaniac". And I hope that track 5 & 6 don't deal with the topics their names point at, because I'm totally uninterested in what Jello has to say on these overdiscussed issues.
Yeah, I just noticed the tracklisting on the site. :) I like the title of track 3 alot-Wholly Buy Bull. It reminds me of Sweet Willy Rollbar. Plethysomograph-That's a really weird title. I like Voted Off The Island alot, and also McGruff The Crime Dog. We're probally gonna get some political lyrics on this album. Political lyrics are fine, but it's kinda dissapointing with the Melvins.
what the problem with political lyrics?
We need that in these troubled time were all the mass media are controlled by Right-wing corporation.

I agree.Alot of people think rock music shouldn't mix with politics (Alice Cooper for example). I think that's stupid. People should be able to say whatever they want.
people should definitely say what they want to say, but jesus, some of us would like to be entertained once in a while without some stoner/shit father/rich kid giving me his opinion on topics they know nothing about. and on top of that, most people dont even care what they're really trying to say. after all of that rage against the latrine crap, how many 15 year olds knew who che guevara was?
and as for that right wing media crack, when the fuck did ted turner join the republican party? time warner became compassionately conservative? yeah right!

If most people don't care what they're trying to say, than why does it bother you? I think it's stupid when bands give political lectures on stage. Just play your damn music! Save it for the lyrics! People don't pay for concerts to get lectured, especially when they disagree with what they are saying. There are alot of bands with really pathetic lyrics (most black metal for example  ). I listen to alot of stuff, where I disagree with what they are saying, but I still listen to it, because I love the music. I guess I understand that for some people, it's harder to listen to stuff, with lyrics they hate, but it's not a big deal to me. :)

ignorance bothers me, which is often the only thing offered to me from the entertainment business. i can actually handle jello more than, say, incubus, cause he's run for office before, but some of these people have no more solutions than a gerbil.
the one upside of jello and the melvins is that it will be 100%
melvins as far as the actual playing and recording of the music.
who is writing the music..that is the true question here my boys. and marilyn. you still there marilyn?
buzz said that jello makes up riffs and mimics them back by
humming or trying to express it with sounds and coughs to buzz.
i expect all playing will be dale, kev and buzz tho, surely.
Quoteand as for that right wing media crack, when the fuck did ted turner join the republican party? time warner became compassionately conservative? yeah right!
The media in the US doenst have to be in a political party. They just repeat the lie of the government, that there job.
Take Fox news for exemple. They say they are fair and balanced, but that utter crap since Fox News is the most pro-Bush channel. Complete propaganda.
CNN is less biaised, but they are not better.
It makes me laugh when Buzzo's said in the past that he thinks that the idea of getting political ideas from a rock band was pretty damn laughble and there he is with song titles like that. Doesn't anyone get sick of Jello's whole schtick? I mean, he's proven that he's as greedy and capitalist as the system he pretends to rally against...just ask his old bandmates. It's like Rage Against the Machine...they make so much money out of spouting empty leftwing catchphrases to a teenage audience that laps it up thinking that these bands are somehow intelligent and cool. If I want political advice, it'll not be from Fat Mike or whoever's spouting off next about how much they hate Bush or hate capitalism.
I sincerely hope Buzz doesn't leave the mike to Jello for the whole record. I mean, for one thing, Jello sounds like absolute shit anyway. And I really hope they don't bother with a lyric sheet.
i agree reverend. i've been down on jello this whole time but i got flak for it because "he's a punk rock legend" or some shit like that. i hate political punk. my love for the melvins has a way to make me dislike any lyrics that make too much sense. it just seems like it puts the emphasis in the wrong part of the musical experience...

Yes.... if the lyrics are political (whether I agree with them or not*) then this could be the first Melvins CD I do not buy. One of the great pleasures of King Buzzo is his cryptic lyrics. I don't need no stinking

Wow
Generally I don't care for political lyrics because
a. most often rock songs make the political points sound dumb (Rage Against My Boss fell prey to this often).
b. If the subject is topical it will quickly date the song.
c. songwriters tend to sacrifice the music for the message.
d. the songwriters tend to not be well informed and lack a solid grasp of the subject matter.
Sometimes even my favorite artists like The Clash and the afore mentioned Rage Against My Boss have made music I 'd dig a lot more without the politics. and There are some exceptions though. People like Bob Dylan, Fugazi, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, and Bob Marley have made political music that I really love.
Jello Biafra is defineately one of the few I really dig. He's clearly very well informed (If you check out the spoken word stuff he's pretty good about naming sources which can't be said even about most serious news sources and politicians). He tends to write about underlaying causes as opposed to just what's on the surface which tends among other things to keep the songs from gettin' to dated. Most importantly his stuff stands without the message. "Holiday In Cambodia" for example is damn funny, no matter what you think about the message. The Dead Kennedys albums, the first Lard album and the Jello/Nomeansno disc will never leave my collection. Even as I've grown older and leaned a little more conservative his stuff still holds up very well to me.
I'l give you that Jello hasn't been very musically active lately and I'm afraid he might be a little rusty. I'm still really lookin' foreward to this disc though, 'cause I think the MELVINS and Jello will bring out the best in each other.
It's kinda bummin' me out to see so many of you guys bitchin' about The MELVINS not doin' exactly what you've liked them doin' in the past. Have you been payin' attention? This band has never (in what 18 albums?) repeated themselves and they're not gonna start now. Thy're never gonna make another Bullhead or The Maggot or Prick for that matter. They work fast, so we can pretty much expect another album next year or early 2006 and it ain't gonna sound much like HAT or any of there other albums, but it is gonna rule. If you don't dig the idea of them workin' with Jello or Lustmord, just don't buy the damn thing and shut the hell up. There will be another "just the MELVINS" album before you know it for you to whine about.
and maybe if we're lucky it'll be just as exciting as
the Saved Message/Thank You 7!!! boy oh boy!!!
wasn't that a dreadful piece of shit for them to pawn
off as a 'Melvins' release. :?
At least with the melvins/jello thing we can hopefully
expect structure, even if jello is rusty or whatever.
well obviously jello is going to give in lyrics on this album.... what else would he do?
im stuck inbetween with the political lyrics debate.
i do think that music is about expressing your artistic creative side, and i dont really see anything creative about singing about how the government fucked you over.
hmmm, should we really kill this album before it comes out?
its like the tool guys say...people are afraid of feeling vulnerable, and beeing surprised, we have to know EVERYTHING so nothing can surprise us...
this surely is the information age.
Ah! But now we HAVE heard it...or at least some of it and judging by that the initial fears are confirmed...Jello's fucking crap and he proved it in the sample...
youre opinion
my opinion
not always the same
Damn you and your democracy, Klump! Take a line! Defend it! Have a few ales and then tell me to fuck off! Let's get some conflict going!
hey! theres a sample?
The political content remains to be seen - though I doubt Jello is capable of RATM-style-rent-a-rant cringeworthyness (no offense to fans).
Militancy and passion regarding many issues in society don't have to or necessarily fit comfortably into the left/right-wing spectrum. Pidgeon-holing people and their views in this manner is sometimes unfair IMO.
I'm hoping Jello can come off as more of a human than a wannabe preacher/politician, but I really don't know what to expect (I confess I have very limited Biafra familiarity - I only know a few DK songs)...

Don't forget that Rage was on one of the biggest record labels in the world too, if they were really practicing what they preached, wouldn't they have released their music themselves or at least on a small indie which shared a similar ideal, rather than some multimillion dollar conglomerate that cares solely about the bottom line ($)? I mean, do you think anyone at Sony honestly cared what message RATM was trying to get across? As for Jello, well, I don't totally believe in the message he's sending, but I respect him for standing up for what he believes in, but can see how he would rub people the wrong way, especially those with differing political opinions. Which is really one of the reasons it suprises me so much the Melvins teamed up with him, from my understandings, Buzz can be quite conservative on some issues.

QuoteThe thing I hate about political lyrics is that they both really date the songs and sound so cringeworthy. Honestly, any person who plays rock music and hopes to attain a status as a political commentator's a bloody fool. Do you think that lyrics such as 'thank you Osama' will have ANY relevance whatsoever in a year's time? Or even today? It sounds like something a daft 6th former would write in an attempt to be controversial.
Generally, I'm totally with you, but Jello past work is a rare exception to that. For example, while "California Uber Alles" name checks Jerry Brown who is no longer a major political figure, it's point that some liberals are just as close minded and willing to forceably indoctrinate their opinions (written a solid decade before the Rush Limbaughs of the world started whining about "political correctness") is still very relevent. The song (and most if not all the Dead Kennedys songs) holds up musically too. The sound I'm gettin' out of that link isn't good enough for me to pick out the lyrics fully, so I can't comment about the bits I've heard ("thank you Osama" is clearly NOT the full thought here) but Jello has a long history of being one of the very few political songwriters who doesn't suck. He IS far more informed and genuinely politically active than most songwriters (and professional news commentors for that matter) and tends to focus at a deeper than surface level, which is why I think that a guy like Buzz respects him. He's also a funny ass mother fucker. Do yourself a favor and don't lump him in with dumbasses like RATM, he's WAY above them. Pay close attention to what he's sayin', He has a lot more to say than you're givin' him credit for.
As I said before, I'm a little worried that he's no longer at his peak, but I expect that the MELVINS will be keeping him from fallin' off too far.
Quote from: Reverend EbeneezerIt makes me laugh when Buzzo's said in the past that he thinks that the idea of getting political ideas from a rock band was pretty damn laughble and there he is with song titles like that. Yeah I remember that too, how Buzz said "Rage Against the Latrine". Yet he's involved in a project with the same political messages!
And also, I heard that Buzz was Republican. Did he switch or something? Cuz Jello is Democratic, who wrote all the lyrics of this album. Ahh maybe Buzz just said hell with it and handed Jello all the creative freedom in the lyrics department and didn't get on his case for it...i dunno.
Jello is defineately pretty liberal, but in no way is he a Democrat. He's just as critical of them as he is Republicans. I think I remember that he was considered for being Ralph Nader's running mate. From what I gather Buzz might lbe somewhat conservative, be he's an independent, not a Republican. I can't see him agreeing with they way that Republicans suck up to the religous right, fo example. I bet they have more in common in reality if you pay attention to what they actually think than if you try and make them fit some arbitrary label.
Plus it's really hard to get a good grasp where Buzz stands seriously
since in interviews he loves to mislead the interviewers and often
will make up shit just to amuse himself. for instance, in one he's
heard calling jello a washed-up boob, a fool etc, then a few months
later we read that he's recording an album with him?????

mxdwn.com has reviewed the melvins/jello biafra collaboration Never Breathe What You Can't See (http://www.mxdwn.com/article.php?sid=316)
:D
Mmm.. I'm not so sure about this one. It feels like the Melvins are watered-down a bit, they never reach those unique moments of clarity and momentum like on other albums. I don't think Jello has all that strong or suitable a singing voice, and he's kind of made a semi-political bitchy album lyrically without much urgency. Feels more like cattyness than genuine vehemence on his part. I don't know, I'll give it a spin again soon, as it's been a while since I've actually been inclined to listen to it.
That being said, this is the best thing Jello's done in 10 years!!
this is the only Melvins album i own on vinyl, and it's only been spun once.
complete shit. jello REALLY needs to find some new lyrical inspiration instead of yuppies driving SUV's and Cadillac's. dude, that's so 1990's.
and wtf? buzz can write better riffs with his fucking asshole. this album sucks.
i'm probably completely missing the point of this album, but still.
I want to like this record so very much, but just can't seem to make myself. Ive always been a Melvins and a Dead Kennedys fan but sometimes you just shouldn't try to mix certain things. I can't say anything bad about, but it doesn't do much for me. It's nowhere near the quality of anything The Melvins have put out on their own. I do however really like the artwork on this album. The sick fish in the wheelchair on the back cover reminds me of Muddy Mudskipper from Ren and Stimpy!

 I never thought of that
I think the second half of this album is a bit stronger than the first. Interesting those are the songs that ended up in alt versions on Sieg Howdy. "Plethysmograph" sounds like a word you'd find in a list of 'words songwriters should avoid' and yelling about Yuppies is a bit cliche. I really dig the style of the songs, though, pretty straight protopunk.
I hold this album in very high regard. A quality Melvins release through and through. I heard that prior to working on the songs, Jello wanted to do something Melvins influenced and that Melvins wanted to write stuff closer to Dead Kennedys. So i guess this is something of a middle ground between that. I have never taken anywhere near so much to 'Sieg Howdy' as i did this one.

Yeah by definition it was the stuff they deemed not good enough to make it on to the album.
I never anyone talk about "Caped Crusader." I dig that arrangement. Another one I think they could do live with Steven hollering.
