Title: GPT bootleg
Post by: the crybaby on March 12, 2012, 08:48:45 AM
i have been at a vinyl market in my hometown yesterday and there have been a shitload of GPT vinyls... someone has bootlegged them, same artwork, same labels, nearly the same etching at the inside end of the groove...
these are the differences to the regular version:
low right corner at the back cover --> regular version: "Made In France"; bootleg version: "Made in Micronesia"
etching --> regular version: "VM 103 A MPO" / "VM 103 B MPO" (the 2nd pressing does have MPO scratched out); bootleg version: "VM 103 A" / "VM 103 B"

I heard about this.  I also heard MELVINS are aware and less than thrilled.

do you blame them?

Micronesia...  HA!   do me a favor.   google Micronesia.    something tells me they don't do alot of vinyl pressing there.

looks like someone is really pissed waiting too long for the boner/back catalog re-releases.
that, or someone realizes that every DAMN piece of melvins vinyl now sells in the range of $50-1000, and wants to make money.

Were't there bootlegged red vinyls of Houdini that didn't even sound as good as the originals?

yeah, someone said those houdini presses were "authorized" but not sure exactly.

Anyway The melvins aren't going to be happy about this.

the red bootleg sounded terrible, i hate mp3s but this is one time that i would recommend anyone to download houdini before wasting money on that shitty bootleg, or why not just buy the cd.

That looks legit. What's the indications it's fake?

As far as I know, all legit Stoner Witches were pink vinyl and gatefold sleeve. It was bootlegged in Germany around the time Stoner Witch was released, I think this is one of those. Black vinyl and single sleeve.

If there's a legit Stoner Witch on black vinyl, I'd love to get my hands on one.

The same was done to Houdini. Single sleeve and "Atlantic"-looking logos.

I got the black vinyl last week on ebay.  If that is a bootleg than whoever did it is the God of bootlegs, I have heard alot of bootlegs and none sound and look that good.  If you read the record it does say it was made in Germany.  I have heard it is just the Euro release, An Atlantic Repress, and a bootleg in my research since I got it this past week.  I thought it was a bootleg when I bought it, but now I don't think its possible.  Does anyone have 100% definitive evidence?

After more research, overall I think my first impression that it was a bootleg is probably right because freight is misspelled...but it sounds really really really good for a bootleg and I got it for around $50USD and when I bought it I thought it was a bootleg so I didnt get burned.  If it is on Ebay, I would recommend getting it if its under $70USD.

What's the matrix say? Is there an embossed Atlantic logo on the back sleeve? This is interesting....

Im back to being 100% sure it is a bootleg, its just the sound quality threw me off when I first listened to it.  Whoever did it knew what they were doing and did a good job, the vinyl does not sound flat at all like most bootlegs.  But there are some little things that don't add up: Freight is misspelled on the vinyl; The Cat. # is 82704-2 (which is the Cat. # for the CD not the vinyl which is 82704-1).

The Matrix number is 6-502 612 and it was made in Warner Music Manufacturing Europe...which sounds alot like the Houdini German bootleg.  Does anyone have any idea how many of the bootlegs are out there?

I just don't understand why they would bootleg stoner witch at the time of its release.
It's not like the Melvin's were burning uP the charts. Usually records get bootlegged when demand is greater than supply and the avg selling price on the secondary market is very high. I want to believe its not a boot, but mispellings are usually a dead giveaway.

I discovered recently that there's a genuine Atlantic Europe pressing of Houdini with gatefold sleeve (it's pretty similar to the German Houdini bootleg but with different matrices and the gatefold); I thought you might have found a Stoner Witch equivalent but I'm not so sure now.

There is another Gluey Porch Treatments bootleg here. This is different from the one Crybaby mentioned. This contains all of GPT plus the 6 Songs EP. The matrices say:

24     A

24     B

Nothing else. This is appearing on eBay cheaper than the German (?) one Crybaby found.

A newer version of the GPT/6 Songs bootleg has appeared, this time with a "huge poster" sleeve.

Noticed they cut the picture off of the back of the album so you can't see the 'Made in...' text.
