Title: Melvins tracks other people (friends/acquaintances) seem to like?
Post by: Stass on March 19, 2012, 03:21:18 PM
I always find The Melvins a hard sell when I tell people about them, whether it be friends or casual acquaintances. While it would be easier to recommend a handful of albums, as an individual track is not enough to give someone a rough idea on what to expect from them. But I've noticed a few tracks that others seem to take a liking to, whether I've rammed them down their throat, or seem to show any liking without my input. For this, I ignored cover songs by the band (ie. Candy-O, The Green Manalishi etc):

The War On Wisdom, The Water Glass, Blood Witch.
- these tracks get the approval from one of my best mates, where The Melvins are not exactly his cup of tea, but he's used to me playing them at home at this stage.

Queen
- one of my mates has "Stoner Witch" in her CD collection, so it's become the "token Melvins album" whenever I'm around. :P
- this track seems to be a favourite of hers and her husband, from what I gather.

The Bit
- a good portion of my friends are huge Mastodon fans, so they knew of the cover of this song.
- I've never gotten into Mastodon, so I play this whenever I'm in a pub with said mates, as this is one of two Melvins songs that I seem to find in jukeboxes.

Honey Bucket
- this is the other jukebox track.

Matt-Alec, It's Shoved
- I saw these two songs posted on someone's Facebook page, and I didn't know she listened to them from time to time.

Safety Third
- there is this DJ in one pub that I used to go to years ago, and he used to play a few decent tracks before the club got busy, and this was one of the tracks he used to play. But once the pub became packed, he was reduced to play 3-4 System Of A Down every hour.

If anyone has any other similar stories, or even have a certain track or two they use on others (hence the poll above), feel free to comment below.

EDIT
A History Of Bad Men
- one time I posted on my FB page the clip of Lindsay Lohan dancing to The Melvins in "I Know Who Killed Me", and I was asked what song was in the background by someone I know.

Yeah its a tricky one. Ultimately i think it depends upon the tastes and outlook of whom you are trying to subject them to. To the usual, "normal" person tho i'd probably go with something like The Talking Horse or Billy Fish. Both quite upbeat, listenable and easy to get into. They're not exactly representative of the band but they serve as something that shouldn't deter someone from exploring further.

I think Revolve is another good one or Electric Flower.

I generally sit them down, play them the 6 Songs EP and if they're not smiling all the way through it, tell them to fuck off.

Speaking for myself on this im sure Lysol would actually put many people off! I had already heard and loved a good handful of Melvins albums when i first discovered them but Lysol did nothing for me. Took me quite a while to warm to it. Bootlicker tho yes that was my first album and i loved it!!

STONER WITCH was my first, but that's far too weird and heavy for most beginners. But that's just like, my opinion, man. STAG might be a better choice, but I think LYSOL would give the listener a better idea of what to expect for future endeavors.

LYSOL did nothing for you ???!!!!

Well...I know its not charmacarmacat.  I had my brother in a car ride with me to see the Best Worst Movie premiere, about a 40 min car ride.  Had eggnog going but driving on the freeway drowned out the low volume of the music.  When we get off the freeway suddenly charmacharamcat is in listening range and my bro gives me this "what the hell is this?" look.  He hated it and I lowered the volume a little.  Maybe starting off with some houdini or stoner witch would have been an eaiser introduction.

For the ________ fan, ________:

Sabbath- Lysol/Bullhead
Metallica- Honey bucket/revolve/asa
Black flag/punk- mangled demos/ozma/eggnog
Zeppelin/70's rock- nude w/ boots/bootlicker
Industrial-pigs/cod
Garage/60's rock-houdini(?)/eggnog(?)
Math rock-ozma

Honey Bucket seems to be the best for the all around metal fan, imo.

That's my take...

My cousin posted the melvins interview and performance from the TV show sound fx from 1995 on his Facebook page.  And he said he watched the whole hellfest show.  He's hooked.

He seemed to like them in interviews at first more than the music.  Like the charm of their personalities made their music more palatable, maybe?  He's really diggin them now.  He's an Unsane fan so it was probably a natural progression.

I used to burn people millions of CD's, theres at least 50 copies of the Bootlicker floating around among dozens of others...

Now I'll usually bring something by a friend's place, and "forget" to take it with me.

Last time I did that was with Shrinebuilder, and He never offered to give it back yet.

works like a charm.

A friend at work asked me about my music today.  (Demo is 23 yr old female into Nickleback  :microwave:).  I told her I like the melvins so she put on Pandora melvins radio on her phone.  Night goat started playing and she thought her phone was breaking .  I told her that was the bass guitar and she said "Oh so their guitar is broken".

Almost died laughing.

Ugh, I hate when people ask me about music I like. Oh, you like Melvins? What are they like?
I never know what to say without either sounding like a pompous a-hole, or worse....an idiot.

Pandora sucks. If you put on 'Melvins radio' it'll play 5 songs, all by Jesus Lizard or BH surfers. Weak. Melvins are undefinable, and do not have similarities.

You can't play one song. Can't define Melvins that way. Give her LYSOL. Watch her eyes, if they don't roll back into her head at 18:59 something is terribly, terribly wrong.

If you had to choose ONE song it would undoubtedly be Charmicarmicat.

Next top choice is MANKY. This video, eyes taped open Clockwork Orange style :

i stopped pointing people to melvins a long time ago, since it would always have very little success. melvins need to get discovered.
some of my friends made the journey via punk, metal, stoner, doom, noise etc to finally find and love melvins... without any help... well done!

I wasn't pushing the melvins on this girl.  She was curious what they sounded like.  I'm not going to give her Lysol because she won't get it/appreciate it.  It must be discovered by the individual, agreed.

Yeah, referring friends to the Melvins usually ends in bitter failure. :( I have a friend that thinks they're the "worst band ever". Usually when people ask me what kind of music I like, I ask what they like and then try to find similarities within what they mentioned, and then I'll say something like "Oh, you may like ___.". I have a really diverse music taste so it usually works. If I start in on some of the bands I like I usually get a confused look followed with a "Never heard of them.." or "They suck."

Ah that's an interesting way, that never occurred to me before. What if the music they like has absolutely no grounding or similarity in anything you appreciate tho?

Generally for myself i sort of avoid talking music to friends/acquaintances. Not that i don't wish too but i find people just don't have the same level of interest. Music doesn't mean so much to the average person beyond something to listen to in the background ALONGSIDE their life rather than as the focal point. Either that or it can be frustrating to bite your tongue, raining fire and brimstone down upon someone when they namecheck Blink 182 as a favourite or such.

I've heard of euphemisms for sex but this is ridikalas.

PS:  when trying to discuss MELVINS with a non-listener don't use statements like "they sound like...".   go with something like "they associate with...".       it's much easier to make a connection there.   because they don't sound like any band.   but when you start throwing names like "tool" or "nirvana" or "mike patton" around you're much more likely to strike the nerve of your average everyday yahoo.
not that they still won't say "what the fuck is this shit?  this sucks!" once they get a listen either way.

The only time that ever seems to happen to me is if they mention something that is straight ahead pop like Bieber or something. At that point, I just respectfully state that it isn't my thing and then move on. Usually for most genres though I can find a way to relate to something. If they say something that I really hate, like Lil' Wayne, I think of hip hop and then mention Eyedea and Abilities, or Sage Francis, or something like that. Sometimes though, I just won't talk about music with people, because of what you said here:

i've actually managed to get quite a few friends into the melvins (6 or 7?). enough so where they've occasionally gone on road trips with me, etc.

if it's someone i don't know very well i'll either point 'em to stoner witch, stag or ozma. i generally don't prefer recommending individual tracks for any band these days.

if it's a real friend i'll try to recommend something melvins that's as close as possible to their regular musical consumption. i DO actually want more people to appreciate the band, but i sure won't kill myself trying.

I don't care tbh.

I like Melvins, it's almost an old exclusive gentlemen's private club. Not the strip-joint kind, the British upper class 18th century kind. Those who know, know - those who don't, don't deserve it.

Their performance at the Hellfest 2012 is a good represention of the band for me, the setlist pretty much sums up their style and the sound is killer

Also the live à Belfort 2003, perhaps my favorite Melvins live

If I had to choose just one song, maybe Revolve...

But I usually don't speak to people who does'nt know The Melvins, so case closed
