Title: Melvins attract hipsters?
Post by: (((O))) on May 15, 2012, 01:17:46 PM
Just read these comments on another (unnamed) forum. What do you guys think?

"I love them live, but do i hate melvins fans. it's like going to the worst asshole dick-fest ever. kind of bums me out."

"You know I was thinking about posting the same thing, and I say that as a huge Melvins fan. The last time I saw them live the room was packed with bottom feeding hipster ass clowns."

"The last 2 times i saw them i swore i would never see them again. they attract some of the worst human beings i've ever seen at a concert."

"This will be the first time seeing them live. I'll bring my anti-hipster ass clown riot gear just in case."

"Just in case? There's no just in case. You will need it."

"There was definitely a good percentage of arse clowns here in brum last time I saw them in November."

don't know what they are talking about. the only people i cant stand are the ones who yell all night and throw beer at the stage.

That was the forever doomed forum.  Out of a four page thread, basically only three people said they didn't like the crowds at Melvins show.. just pay it no mind.

MELVINS crowds have changed big time.

20 years ago MELVINS would clear a room.
This was awesome.  Played to maybe 35 people.

10 years ago MELVINS began to bring in a younger cool crowd.

Now MELVINS club scencesters are all types.

such is life.

The moshing dorks are the worst.

"hipster" is fast becoming a generic insult to be applied to anyone who has any interest in alternative music.

I have to say, it seems to me that most Melvins fans are males, maybe a little chubby, a little nerdy, but generally nice people (myself included). I don't have any friends that are melvins fans, so I usually go to their shows solo, and the majority of the time, I wind up bs-ing with another fan about the band.

Also, I don't see hardly any "pitchfork" or "vice" style hipsters at the shows at all.

I think since there really is no definition of a modern hipster, people it's used to describe anyone you don't like regardless.

In the concert setting, I'm less bothered by the "hipsters" than I am by what I consider to be "scenesters" -- aka, the people who attend a show only to mingle (loudly) with their peers, drink Pabst, and not to actually watch the show. It so happens that they are usually hipsters as imagined in the popular culture, but not all hipsters are there purely to socialize. No, these trendy-looking attention whores are particularly deserving of my scorn and/or boot to the crigs because they will talk loudly throughout the set that I have paid good money to see.

in the general scheme of show going i don't care about the hipster contingent. they're usually kind of mindless, but generally harmless. even if it's a temporary blip, at least it's putting money in the band's pockets. like glen said, it's the moshing lugnuts that get on my nerves. both times i've seen melvins in detroit, the shows have brought out the worst hatebreed fan type goons who add a bullshit macho element i really could do without.
agreed with the comments about the scenester types. that and the purists who are all pissed off that melvins fandom isn't their own secret little club anymore.

then theres the common objects in someones posession that makes them a target to be labelled hipster. Pabst, Thick frame glasses, She maghs worn as scarfs, vans or cons, tight jeans.
all this along with a pretentious and stubborn attitude on everything gives you a text book hipster.
I forgot to mention the variety of facial hair they come in. Beard, Porn Moustache and those silly looking Swirly Moustaches wich do a well dressed gentleman justice, but when you pair this shit up with the garbage such as the following picture you get someone silently screaming for attention.

Ha! That picture is priceless! I don't mind hipsters. I mind drunken idiots that want to mosh around me. I want the front row. I want to be able to watch the show without people bumping into me. I tend to get unpleasant when it happens. If you want to mosh like an idiot, do it behind me and don't touch me. Also don't scream at the Melvins "in my ears." I don't go to many shows anymore but when I do, I want to enjoy it. I think I'll just take a loan out against my savings and security plan and pay the melvins to play a set in my back yard. Do you think it's still only $5,000 to book them?

First of all, staches and beards are awesome even if you like shitty beer.

Secondly, I like mosh pits. I find it passe but I did it a lot when I was younger. Mainly though I'm short and when a show is packed sometimes have trouble seeing the stage (like @ the last Melvins show). I can shove my way to the edge of the pit where I have a lot more space and can see 1000x better.

Actually, I hate very tall people the most, especially when they stand in front of me. This happened at Acid Mothers Temple the other week. I was actually standing on one of the benches off to the side and had a good view, then this guy -- the tallest fucker in the room by at least six inches -- strolls out in front of me and obstructs my view for most of the show.

I would go to a show attended only by auto-moshing hipster scenesters if I knew there would be no super tall people there.

FUCK YOU, INCONSIDERATE TALL PEOPLE.

Tall people at shows is the absolute worst! But lucky for me, big tall bald men with beards are usually nice enough to let me stand in front of them. That should be a general rule, folks.... if you can see over someone's head, let them take one step ahead....

In my experience, a hipster is typically unpassionate about things they say they like. Every Melvins fan I know (and MOST of them are people I know from here) are anything but.  But of course, there are exceptions to everything.....

Melvins might be somewhat of a different band than they were 20 years ago, but they're definitely not hipster music. No way.  Just a few years ago (it's been a while since they've hit my town  :? ) they close with Roadbull. Everyone has left the stage; but Dale is still whistling and drumming that last bit. He eventually stands up, grabs the mic and starts making ear piercing feedback with it. Room cleared in 30 seconds. Everyone filed out accordingly. I stayed and watched :D

Oh, and those kids are obvious douchbags. Shit-talking on a music message board should not be taken seriously. You all should know that.

of course i have noticed these kind of frustrations in my lifetime and am happy to be of service to all you midgets. i mean little people.

fortunately, the solution is a simple one: either 1) you make sure to move in front of tall people, or, option number 2) you show up in time so you don't even have to move.

it's either those two or you pick a fight.

i am planning to stand right in front of schnab during the MELVINS show, i'll let you all know how it ended for him.

So the plan is still on? The one where we dress up in gimp outfits and follow schnabel around like he's our leader?
I agree - if you really want to see the show, you show up early so you can pick your spot, no matter how tall you are. If being on time is not your thing, though, believe it or not, most tall people will let you pass if you just ask/point, or yell "GIVING BIRTH! COMING THROUGH! PREGNANT WOMAN, GIVING BIRTH, COMING THROUGH!".

What really got my goad last year at melvins lite was a 20 something female, thin, attractive, who was standing next to me, texting intermittently thruout the show!  I bumped into her with a little force to get the hint.  She finally moved.  So rude!

The hipsters are painful on the eyes but are generally harmless.  Definatley an increase in attendance as of late.

last time I went I could have used some hipsters who used deodorant in the crowd. A couple dozen giant hairy fatties (male and female) in a 100+F venue made for a pretty repulsive atmosphere..... :-&

I'm one of those real tall people, but I generally get my spot and stick to it, lately been up against the wall

Jesus, are you coming to a show to watch a band play live, or do you go there to watch the audience. I give a flying fuck in how the audience looks, most probably the ones that complain about hipsters are perhaps the worst hipsters of them all. Spoon them!

The problem is if you get stuck behind a guy who is doing little more than staring at the band it's a bit of a buzzkill.  It's even a little bit creepy.

I think the one's that made those comments were only talking themselves or one another. Have you ever met a hipster that admitted he was a hipster? Is it something you hold pride in or has the word become so dirty no one wants that label? I'm too fat to look like a hipster and too hairy. And I have never set foot in an American Apparel before. Though I do buy clothes at thrift stores because I'm poor. And I listen to everything from hip hop to metal to country to jazz. So, how the shit do you classify a hipster? Usually when I get to talking to someone its obvious to tell, or if I over hear a conversation or notice their behavior around their friends. Just how they talk or what the talk about.

I have more to type, but I don't want to be too winded.

I am 6'5" and I hate when some short fucker asks me to move. I generally post up by the sound mixer as that is where the show sounds the best. I won't move but I'll always let a short person stand in front of me.

I'll definitely be sneaking some pics of douchebag hipsters at the next show. i think i can get my wife to pose in front of them, then take the picture of them. The bar that they have been playing here in Phoenix is a place that attracts that element. They are all packed in the patio out front, smoking when you get there, but that crowd is just there for that purpose. Some of them will actually pay to enter the live music part of the club, and I commend them for at least trying to expand their musical tastes, but seriously, put away your phone! stop talking! The moshers around here are an entirely different group. And they suck big balls! Why do I have to put my elbow out, in a totally awkward defensive stance, in front of my wife and some other female i don't even know? Just to see my favorite band! What does that have to do with enjoying live music?

I've probably said it before, but I love the mosh pits although I haven't partaken in years. Mainly I like to stand on the edge of a pit so I can see the stage. I'm 5'5 and fairly difficult to knock over, so that's my best shot at a good view.

I've always felt that moshing/ mosh pits have seen their time come and go, yet these cave men can't get it through their thick, sloped craniums. It would be great to have a time machine, and go back to 1984, and go do this at a Black Flag show. Where it belongs!

and if they don't want me to mosh, fine.
then set out some lawn chairs to put my fat ass down into.
im not standing in one place for forty minutes like a fucking coon.

Sorry dude, never asked for chairs. I was in the All Ages Section, 5 feet in front of The King, the whole set. And you better believe that I was twitching, jumping, Geeking out, moving to the music. I'm just asking why do people need to touch eachother, or slam into eachother to enjoy music? If they want to bang me, then they can buy me an expensive dinner! Those homoerotic motherfuckers.

I feel mosh pits are played out, but I'm also old. I've been in my fair share of mosh pits. If that's what people want to do, good for them.
