Title: May 28th at Concorde 2, Brighton
Post by: azathoth rising on May 28, 2012, 06:12:15 PM
Just got back, can barely hear! Second time I've seen them there, absolutely the loudest thing I've ever experienced, just stunning from start to finish. You know you are in for a treat when the first note causes you to panic because the sound physically overwhelms your body. Stood right in front of Buzz, he was on fire the whole night. Had a cool little moment with Jared pulling faces at me and me copying them. The same setlist as the other shows, so glad I've seen Hung Bunny/Roman Dog Bird and Youth Of America now. And to top off a great night I caught a drumstick!

Some bad news for our Manchester friends, t-shirts are down to XL and L only, no other merch at all. We had no poster either because apparently it didn't get done, or something.

Fantastic show, my ears are in tatters. Highlight for me was The Bit. I got myself a L t-shirt shame they didn't have anything else.

Just got home. Ears in shreds. The smoke alarm could be on, I just don't know for sure.

Oldernie picked me up at around 4.30 and we drove to the venue hoping to catch the soundcheck. He had a Melvins Fetus that he wanted signing, too. Caught Jared mooching around outside while Coady and Dale were soundchecking; he said to hang around for a while and the signing would happen. So, with a bit of quick thinking, we slipped indoors and watched the soundcheck for an hour or so.

After it was over, we all met finally, shook hands and discussed Fetuses, Nikes, Tins of Meat and what-not. Buzz and Dale were super friendly, as was Coady who had never seen a Fetus before, obviously, and was a bit perplexed as to whether it was bit of genuine merch (unless he was being extra-canny). Sign it they did which made for a very happy Ernie.

So we said bye bye and went for some burger and chips. All of Big Business walked past as I was doing so which was something else that had never happened to me before. I ran (yes, ran) up to Scott and told him that I'd been sent by Glen to say the very special word (banana) and that if I did say it something strange and beautiful would happen but that we might not notice what it was right away.

@glen:
So I said Banana, in the name of Glen, who is from Michigan, and the penny dropped and we all had a good laugh. He said I should check out the Big Business BBS soon.

The gig was just as Azathoth and Eggy have stated - extremely loud and bass-heavy. I didn't recognise the song after Youth of America - it was great to hear them playing brand new songs! The set lasted for 80 minutes. My ears are totally fucked right now. Highlights of the night were Manky and seeing Mr and Mrs Buddy Holiday.

Great times.

Great reviews guys! I really wish I could have seen these guys this year. I'm hoping I'll be able to see Melvins lite.

I know what you mean. I saw them last year when they did the mini residency tour. When they started the Bullhead/Lysol/Eggnog set, the first note was Jared strumming his bass, and it was alarmingly loud. This was soon followed by Dale and Coady going ape shit and crashing their ride cymbals. The sound was nearly overwhelming and certaintly beautifully loud.

what jules said..........

i think this is the most fucked my ears have ever felt, but then its been a pretty heavy couple of days in a row,
soundcheck sounded very loud, so i knew we were in for a nice loud set.

glen- i also mentioned "banana" to scott by way of trying to get preferential treatment for a drumstick, but then he gave it to someone else, but he will hopefully remember my face and give me one at big biz show next week.
so scott was all like " whats all this stuff about bananas" as he had obviously already had jules mentioning it to him a few hours previous.

i checked youtube earlier to see if anyone had uploaded anything but none yet.

didnt really seem like much of a moshpit mind, just a big circle with a couple of people running around.
and an annoying guy with his bag.

one funny thing i saw though, a security guy came out into the crowd because he thought this guy near me had a blade, but turned out it was only a pen, but youd think the security guy might be a bit concerned about the fact the guy had a glass litre bottle of vodka in the other hand.
normally venues are proper anal about people bringing in there own drink.

First post!

This was an awesome show, got down the front and probably danced into a few too many people, but I think this is the best time I've seen them. A small stage is quite good, they barely had room to move with 2 kits and everything else.

Need to find a set list really, were a good few songs I didn't recognize

Ah nice one, I haven't fully digested the bulls and bees yet so was thinking what is this... And I got Lysol this week, so still waiting to listen.

Youth of America was a nice surprise, and the Bit does get better and better each time. No hats, however, don't think I own a single hat thinking about it... I'm 6'6" and skinny as fck if that's noticeable, hope i wasn't too unbearable ;D

It's a shame I didn't thought of the idea earlier to go to Brighton after London, and see Melvins again.. Seems like all of you had a blast, and I would have loved to see them in a smaller venue and play the entire Bull and the Bees EP as well.. Hopefully another european/uk tour later in the year.

I shouldn't complain too much though, I saw Mudhoney in Utrecht, Netherlands (the day Melvins played in Brighton) who did another amazing and longer set then on ATP.
