When I was 13 I was a huge Nirvana fan. This was 1992 so most kids my age were. As I obsessed I learned about the Melvins. I went to my local "Record Express" with my friend to see if they had anything by them. My friend is confused and buys a cassette by a band called "Those Melvins"...MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT follows. A few months later we are in a much cooler independent record store that has a big rack of 45s. There we spot 2 copies of "With Yo Heart Not Yo Hands" He got the yellow and I got the Pink one. We were instantly blown away, especially by the b-side "4 letter woman" Shortly after I discovered a mail order company called vinyl inc. and begin getting all the albums through the mail. We make our guitar teacher transcribe "four letter woman", he calls me, holds the phone up to the record player and i hear..."Jon you are really being such a prick!" To this day that 45 still holds a very special place in my heart. (also it is one of the few records to survive the tag sales/trips to the dump my mother took when I was in college)
So now I ask, what was your first Melvins purchase? I want stories!
I was at an midnight onsale for Pearl Jam's Vs record and I won a stack of CDs in a trivia contest. What was that 92? Anyway I was standing there and saw that the guy next to me had Houdini in his stack of CDs. I offered him any of my CDs in traded for it. He took the Mr. Big CD I had in my stack. Been a fan ever since.

in late 2005 I was with a woman who suggested I check out some Melvins stuff based on my love for doom/stoner/sludge-y music. When I went back to my hometown for x-mas that year, a friend of mine(who only listens to metal) played the Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments cd for me and I was hooked from the opening notes of Eye Flys(he played GPT first). I begged him to burn me a copy of it, and it made me want to check out more of their stuff. Needless to say, when I returned to FL, I spent the next several months to a year scouring all the independent records stores looking for anything Melvins related. The more albums I listened to, the more obsessed I became to the point where they very quickly became my favorite band. Then when I saw them live in 2006, their status as my favorite band was instantly sealed.
i was in grade 9 and a guy in my class was wearing a Ministry filth pig t-shirt so i became friends with him, he was looking for rare Nirvana stuff and i had an old outcesticide vol 3 cassette that i copied for him and he got me a copy of some old rare Spooky Kids stuff (marilyn manson is a tard and his music for the last 12 years blows , but that old spooky kids shit is still fucking awesome!!!) anyway on that tape he put on Honey Bucket and Sky pup and from that moment i was blown away!!! soon after i had to hear more of these guys so i bought the first cd i could find and it was Stoner Witch and from the opening of skweetis i was hooked for life, ok so this had to have been around '99 because i found the Bootlicker soon after then went nuts on the Melvins ever since
My first ride was Stoner Witch, I was two years out of High School and a girl I was dating had it in her car stereo. I fell in love with it, and enjoyed that they weren't exactly a straight-forward band. At the time I was two years into my Zappa worship, so it took a lot to get me to listen to anything else during that time-frame. Stoner Witch is still in my top 4 or 5 Melvins albums.
I'm sure I've waxed about this here before but ...
1987, 14yrs. old ... total hardcore/thrash kid. Start high school and meet this dude that is a total hardcore nut (pen pals/tape trades with all kinds of people/bands, roadied for DRI, CoC, Spermbirds, Raw Power, massive HC/Punk record/tape collection). He intros me to all kinds of shit I to that point had only heard of ... or not even heard at all.
We play in bands together, go see tons of shows ... somewhere over the year knowing my taste in bands he tells me that I should check out the Melvins and their debut "GPT" (I was already a fan of other Alchemy releases ... Clown Alley, RKL etc.) I had seen the ads in MMR, so I took his advice and picked it up. I bring it over to another pals' place for the virgin listen.
We prepare with way too many hot knives ... and then ... WTF!! We weren't even sure we had it on the right speed!!?? But once we figure it out ... we are blown to smithereens! And the Melvins become my favorite band to this day. It was like they heard what I imagined would be the perfect music ... and put it on record ... it was eerie how much sense it made, how much it connected, how much it moved me (not just me, the 5 of us that were there that day are all still big fans) ... it was absolutely perfect!!
I played that record out completely ... over and over. And the years of Melvins just kept coming and coming ... and still do.
Funny thing ... the two albums I remember listening to most that year were "GPT" and Napalm Death "Scum" ... I think I might even have bought them both on the same day? But they seemed polar opposites to one another ... but complimented each other so well.
Another funny thing ... where Buzz sings "Spoken like a dreamer ..." We always assumed he sang "Smoking like a freebird" ... like in reference to the silly Pig in "Fritz the Cat". We thought that was really cool ... 'cause we really dug "Fritz the Cat". And thought it was totally cool that this amazing band did too ...

Yeah, I was 14yrs. old I didn't know shit about cooking ... maybe bacon, and crappy (kraft) dinner ... we probably gorged ourselves on Chubby's pizza (the best pizza joint of all time RIP. The owner sold it off to become a PI like Magnum ... though his mustache sucked in comparison ... so he probably was a shitty PI ... unlike Magnum!)
Oh man, that was easily the best "first record" exprience of my life ... almost 30yrs. later and I'm still hooked ... and even now I can hear that "special" thing everytime I throw "GTP" on ...
I started listening to the Melvins when I was in sixth grade, around 2000. I must have been 11 or 12. :shock: My two favorite bands were Metallica and Nirvana. I kind of worshipped Kurt Cobain at the time. :lol: I read a lot about Nirvana from books and online, and of course the Melvins were always brought up and mentioned as Kurt's favorite band. So one day my parents took me to some CD store, and I bought Stoner Witch. I think I bought that one first because it was the only cd they carried. I went home and put the CD into my walkman. I liked it. My initial reaction was that the music was kind of wierd, but pretty good. One time I put on the CD when my mom was in the room. Skweetis started playing and she gave me a wierd look and said, "You PAID for this?!" The next album I got was Gluey Porch Treatments. I got that one in 6th grade too. I remember listening to that cd on my walkman for the first time, sitting on the carpet underneath the dining room table. :lol: I was a wierd kid. I'm pretty sure the 3rd album I got was The Crybaby, and I had no idea what I was getting into. The 4th one I got was Collosus Of Destiny. :lol: Again, I had no idea it would sound like that. It took me a long time to get into that cd. I don't think I even listened to it from start to finish until years later. Despite the wierdness and experimentation (which I didn't always "get"), I became very intrigued with the band and never looked back. I spent a lot of time reading about the Melvins on the internet. I do remember that there didn't seem to be a whole lot of extensive information about the band online. I was on the melvins.net a lot in it's early days, but I don't remember exactly when that was. I remember reading about all the albums the Melvins had out, and how excited I was when I finally saw what all the album covers looked like. By the time Hostile Ambient Takeover came out I was a really big fan. That was the first CD I bought after it had just been released. I remember buying Bullhead and The Bootlicker together. I got Ozma and Honky for Christmas in 2002. I think it was 2003 when I finally got Stag and Lysol (I had been dying to get Stag for a long time). Pigs Of The Roman Empire was the first new release I heavily anticipated, and I was on this board a lot, leading up to the release. There are still some Melvins albums I don't have-I just finally got Never Breathe What You Can't See and Sieg Howdy! and I'm currently waiting for Electroretard to come in the mail.
1989 introduced to gluey on vinyl by my bassist, future bassist for his hero is gone. saw them the next year live. after that, i bought gluey on cassette and it stayed in my car for a year and a half! still my favorite cassette, the gluey/ozma being my favorite cd since they're both on there. fuck nirvana. :P
About two years ago I was looking for Nirvana's "Come As You Are" box set, because it had a bunch of their B-sides that I was really into... While looking around for it on the interwebs I stumbled across the Deep Six version of Grinding Process..... Needless to say I was pretty much flabbergasted, especially by the drum track, it just seems to mesh so well with the guitar. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, two days later I went to the record store and bought all the Melvins albums they had :P Which turned out to only be Bullhead, Nude With Boots, and TBSM... (CD versions only because I live in the middle of nowhere, Canada)..... :( Loved them ever since <3
Many years ago, I was really into Faith no More and Mike Patton in general (I'm still a big fan btw) and I progressively discovered bands like Mr Bungle and Melvins. I had never heard bands like these two, I was really impressed, even intimidated by them :lol:
So basically discovered Melvins with Houdini, and really became a fan with the complete Atlantic trilogy, Stoner Witch and Stag. Especially tracks like Sweet Willy Rollbar, Honey Bucket or Shevil (such an incredible song)
I was fourteen years old and it was 1995. I was in the BMG or Columbia House record club and I ordered CD's from there time to time. I remeber seeing a Beavis and Butthead episode where they were watching the video for Hooch and I thought the look of the video and the sound of the song were interesting so I ordered Houdini. Stoner Witch was already out but I really wanted to hear Hooch again. I purchased that and Helmet-Betty and loved both albums. I kept up with them until Honkey which I douldn't get into at the time. In '99, the day after I graduated high school, I was record shopping with a friend and saw that they had a new album, The Maggot. I bought it, loved it, and have followed their discography ever since.
In 2005 I bought Millennium Monsterwork because I loved Fantomas. The Melvins tracks really stood out to me. I was telling my brother about them and he hated their Honky album and basically gave it to me for free. I got a few misc tracks from Kazaa (like Joan of Arc, Honey Bucket, Hooch, and a CMJ comp cd that had Brain Center at Whipples on it) and they've been my favorite band ever since.
I've had some weird introductions to bands. I'm the probably only Tool fan who started with Salival. Buzz was on that!

That's funny because Honky was given to me for free too. I didn't actually go back to that album until after Millennium Monsterwork came out and I looked to see where Mombius Hibachi came from.
back in '92 i was playing music with some childhood friends and the bassist Alex had somehow through his love of Nirvana stumbled across Ozma/GPT cd at our local indie store in Wilmington,NC....i was 11 at the time and was fucking SOLD!....I can truly say that OZMA is the first album i tried to learn all the drum parts for...

Awesome story, I love how the anticipation almost builds up as you guys were getting ready to listen. You guys almost knew subconsciously that you needed to be high for the religious experience that was and is gluey porch treatments!

i was obsessed with nirvana growing up, and new all too much of the melvins as a result. they never really hit me until much later when i had started listening to fantomas and mr bungle during my senior year of high school back in 2001. one day i went on a long, stoney, hot summer drive with a friend of mine who had gotten really into the melvins a good six months before. he put honkey on the car stereo, and i just remember "they all must be slaughtered: just droning my ears off. it drove me fucking wild. i caught them live a few months later and was since hooked.
The Crybaby succeeded in its cynically obvious cross-marketing purposes. I've never been happier to be a consumer pawn.
I first became aware of the Melvins through the Jelvins release as I was (and still am) a big DK fan. At the time, to me, the Melvins were just a attribute-less band that happened to be playing with Jello, ala Nomeansno and Steel Pole Bathub.
But, I really liked both Jelvins albums and eventually picked up Houdini because I knew it was their most well known release. I HATED it. I thought it was boring.
A little later, I heard kicking machine, really liked it, so I picked up manchild 4 with the live melvins disc because it was only $8 and I figured it was a good way to give the Melvins a second shot.
I really liked it and then shortly afterwards, blindly picked up Pigs of the Roman empire and became a Melvins-maniac from then on.
It was waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy back in 2007 when I bought my first Melvins album. I was at my first Melvs concert at the Granada Theater in Dallas. My cousin tagged along and none of us really knew much about them, except for Youtube videos. a Lot of people learn about them through the Nirvana connection, but we didn't know about that at all. The only way we found out they were playing was when we checked into Serj Tankian concert a couple of days before?/after? My cousin couldn't go to Serj show so I looked up the Melvins and decided to go see them.
I bought the GPT reissue and loved it. My cousin bought Senile Animal and I ended trading him my Metallica (Black Album) for it. Don't regret it. Melvins!
the melvins certainly did grow on me. I didn't really get it at first.

probably around '94, i was 14 and nirvana/grunge was my thing. so i bought houdini and thought it was shit, i did not understand it and focused again on the other grunge acts and bands like faith no more, rage against the machine, helmet, beastie boys etc.
then in '97 melvins had mombius hibachi on the sampler of the music magazine "visions". i loved the song but did not buy honkey because i still thought they were too weird for my tastes.
in the next 2 years i got more into stoner like kyuss, qotsa, fu manchu, electric wizard and in this environment the name melvins popped up quite often so i blindly bought the maggot probably in '99 and it finally clicked!

My first experience listening to a Melvins album was back around 1993 as a 7th grader. A few of my buddies and I where all learning to play guitar, writing songs together, hanging out with chicks and drinking beer for the first time, and really getting in to music. As we had a mutual appreciation for Nirvana, we ended up discovering bands like Sonic Youth, Tad, Mudhoney, and the Melvins. I can remember buying the Tad - Inhaler album and thinking it was pretty decent, but my friends bright yellow cassette tape of the Melvins - Houdini really grabbed my attention way more than any of those other bands I was just hearing for the first time. Everything from the first drum hits, to the palm-muted guitar intro, to Buzz' vocals just dripped pure heaviness, and I loved it.
Once we got our hands on a copy of Lysol, I was definitely hooked for life. That whole first 15 minutes or so was such a mind-blowing experience that was so worth the initial patience to really discover. We always made a habit of listening to that album in a dark room in it's entirety whenever we where getting especially faded off smoking weed and drinking 40's. All of our other friends didn't get it and probably thought we where mentally retarded.

Nice!!! I had the "with yo heart not yo hands" 7" and decided to start buying the albums. I used to order all my vinyl through the mail too, so I ordered "Self Titled" which I assumed would be their first album (Didn't know it was called Lysol) Anyhow, it took a second for me to get it. At first I was like
"Are they just gonna fucking drone on an E chord the whole time or what?!? ... BUT by the time the first side ended I was like
"Holy fuck that was intense! I love this band!
Set the way back machine to 1994...
Big Nirvana fan...learned of Melvins...got Stoner Witch and liked most of the songs...next 4 purchases were Eggnog, Ozma, Dale Crover and Your Choice Series Live. Those CD's were what sealed the deal (Devo and Melvins were my favorite bands at this time). It only took about 10 years for me to warm up to Charmacharmacat though...that was always just way out there for me. So I confess I wasn't much into the slow stuff at first as I was around 14...wasn't much into metal (still not)...started getting into fast punk...Nofx, Lag Wagon, Op Ivy, Bad Religion, etc. Melvins went on the back burner once I bought Prick around 1996 and felt ripped off.
Enter 2002...
My brothers and I head to Ameoba Records in Hollywood for a free show by the boys to promote HAT...First time I saw them live and it blew me away! I bought The Crybaby :( (don't ask wht I didn't buy HAT!), got it signed and ended up disliking the album (still do)...A little later I did buy HAT and my faith had been renewed in the band...I started buying the CD's I missed over the past 6 years and loved 'em (especially bootlicker and Stag).
It's the weirdness and diverse range of the albums that I love about these guys. Being into punk I realized that these guys were a billion times more punk than the rudest, fastest punk band out there. They actually stuck to being truly punk (in the vein of Black Flag) whereas the punk I listened to in my late teens still all sound the same today and get boring after the first song. The Melvins continued where black flag left off ( I think Walsby said that, no?) and are certainly not boring. The sludgy songs have more intensity and punk attitude than any 'punk' release in the past 2 decades.
So...I'm hooked.

went to see ed hall open in 90 or 91 for the melvins and was not impressed. could have been ythe mushrooms and the weed? later someone gave me bullhead since ed hall and the melvins were label mates. was hooked on them.

My first true exposure was the mombius hibachi video from cinema beer belly on vhs in high school. Then it was hearing Queen from Stoner Witch and If I had an Exorcism...I purchased their latest albums right away (Maggot and Bootlicker) and was CRUSHED. Picked up Honky shortly thereafter. I convinced my brother to buy Stoner Witch so I could listen to it. The heaviest stuff I was into was some dark metal and punkrock, and the melvins blew them all away with their originality and ( i thought) classic rock feel. When colossus of destiny came out I laughed and scratched my head. The most "experimental" stuff I was into was refused, godspeed, autechre, and mr bungle at the time. This was just plain weird and awesome. None of my relatives or friends liked it, so I loved it. I picked up electroretard, the jello sessions (Loved loved loved these, huge DK fan, this shit was crazy) and then wept when Kevin left, yet rejoiced when BigBusiness joined (i was into their Head For The Shallows album and a lot of hydrahead stuff at the time).
Saw my first show on the senile animal tour and have been rabid for more live appearances ever since. I have been lurking on the boards since 2002 and officially joined on a whim a few years back.
