Title: who played Bass on Houdini?
Post by: Leroy on June 11, 2012, 09:17:24 AM
Who really played bass on the album Houdini?  And by that I mean the majority of the tracks?  I know Billy Anderson played bass on one track.  Did Lori Black play on any tracks, she was credited as being a band member, but I'm assuming the artwork was done before she was kicked out of the band

I'm pretty sure she's not on the record. What confuses me is why she is listed on the record or in the artwork at all? Wasn't she replaced by Joe Preston? Was she back in the band after they kicked him out or something? The Melvins could write a book just on the history of bass players they've had!

I'm guessing she was back in the band (Judging by a handful of live photos I've seen) right after joe got fired but by the time Houdini came around Deutrom had replaced her.

Makes sense to me. It'd be kinda awkward to play in a band with your ex-boyfriend while he's married and his missus does all the art.

Joe was in the band until about june/july of '92, I don't think they finished out the Gwar tour.  Lori started transitioning back into the band in May of '92, but was not on Gwar tour.  Lori then lasted through Feb of '93 before they got the dude from Mol Triffid.  She was listed on Houdini so she could get paid.  One interesting thing is that Night Goat is actually the original recording from the Joe era, but remixed, Joe's bass track removed, and Buzz playing bass.

she was on both Eggnogg and Bullhead, both released in 1991, but Salad of 1000 Delights, filmed in May '91, had Joe.   I guess the "Salads" show must have been right after Joe joined?

I could have sworn I read an interview where Buzz said Lori never re-joined the band and they listed Lori in the credits to seem like a full band.  I can't remember.

That is the month he started playing live with them.  Lori was done after the Feb. tour of '91, but her and Buzz remained together, she just could not tour.  Tom Flynn had played bass on the Spring and Fall '90 US tours.

He may have said that, but there is visual evidence of Lori playing bass in the fall of '92 and Feb. of '93.  She was allegedly busted after the Feb. '93 Seattle show and that was the end of her time in the band, and by all accounts, her relationship with Buzz.

Wow  Sounds like Buzz gave her a lot of chances. And he married Mackie really quickly after breaking up with Lori.  I bet Lori is a big reason why Buzz is so anti-drugs.

Quite true. Stallion is the product of their coupling. This is why his Av. looked so much like Dale.

LMFAO
There needs to be an entire section of this Forum called "Melvins Bassist Discussions"

I remember even being confused as a kid back in 92-93. There was no internet (at least for me) back then so I was always so puzzled. Did Lori really kill that cat in the pic or is it still alive? What happened to Joe Preston?... Did they kick him out for making a shitty solo album? Are the Melvins friends with Mudhoney or are they angry Matt Lukin is with them now? ...and when Houdini came out "Oh I see Lorax is back. Where the fuck did she go? I dont care she's better to look at than Joe!

**Keep in mind these are NOT real questions I am asking now, but rather the amusing recollections of me when I was a 14 year old kid with no answers or real information.***

***(I still am somewhat curious about the cat tho)

Did Lori ever quit doing drugs?  I know she's still alive, but well into her 50's, and even older than Buzz.  I thought i heard something where she became a librarian?

I know from personal experience that that cat LOVED being held upside down.  I'm sure it was purring in that photo, no joke.  Super sweet cat.

Ha, that's wierd. So you knew that cat?
Someone posted an interview recently with Dale from several years ago (2000ish? can't remember) and he said he thinks the cat is still alive and that the cat enjoyed being held upside down.
I wonder if the cat's still alive. Probably not.

I knew the owners a little, and so by default the cat.  If the cat was alive then it's very unlikely its alive now.  At least it would be a pretty old fucking cat.  That photo was taken in 1990 and the cat was full grown then.

I suspect the cat would have been less full-grown if it hadn't spent half its waking life being held up by its tail. Cats stretch. I've seen it happen.

In an interview not too long ago, maybe with Scion, Dale said the cat is actually still alive and he saw it not too long ago. Apparently, it didn't even mind being held up like that... if you can trust Dale that is...

It's interesting . . . some of my favorite Melvins basslines are on that album.

Anyone know specifically who played bass on  Pearl Bomb and Honey Bucket?   Apparently Buzz played bass on Night Goat and Billy Anderson did on Teet, so that solves those.

One o my goals is to play Pearl Bomb fretless
