Disappointing night. The opening band were undertalented garage rockers trying to impersonate avant garde jazz musicians and at best they sounded like instruments falling down stairs. Like a trip to the densitst.
The melvins rocked out until the introduction of Jello Biafra, when the show turned into a political rally. If I wanted to watch fucking politics I would have stayed home and watched msnbc and ate cheetos. Sadly enough this is the first show in 6 years I have not bought a t-shirt from.
Man that sucks :?
More details on the political rally?
whoa!! slow down...
More details about the show... songs played... I understand jello was there... he took the forefront, new material?

I know you're not referring to Trevor Dunn, correct?
Well, I thought it was a great show.
Wasn't sure what to think of Trevor Dunn, I guess at this point in my life my ears just haven't acquired a taste for that sort of thing. Maybe someday.
Right before the show I had to take a leak, but couldn't seem to do so with the constant loud parade of people going in and out the bathroom. But as soon as the Melvins took the stage I forgot all about my bladder.
They opened with Let it all Be. I believe Tipping the Lion was next- I've always like that song but even more so now. They played Queen and possibly Bar X , I can't remember. The Bloat. Covered I wanna hold your hand.
Feedback and notes dragged slowly for 2 minutes, and I was excited to realize it was the Fool, the meddling idiot.
They had some kind of Colossus madness with flashing lights go on for 5 minutes, I think they followed it with eye flys.
Lovely Butterfly attended the concert. And Night Goat also made a triumphant appearance. They also played Bloated Pope and a good portion of the POTRE title track. They did not play pink bat or safety third.
Buzz seemed to hint at some fans' disappointment with the new cd, at one point joking about fans having already had to put up with colossus of destiny.
Yeah, Jello took the stage. He was with them for probably 20 - 30 minutes. I didn't recognize any of the songs. Possibly played Youth of America (I bought and listened to electroretard for the first time that night, and the opening riff sounded familiar). Jello constantly flailed his arms around like an octupus playing charades. He crowd surfed a couple times, and I found myself wondering if he ever surfs at his spoken word engagements. He made a brief comment about voting out Bush, but the politics was mainly in the songs. He didn't stop the show and ramble. I was almost poised to throw my shoe at him if he started rambling about, say, Mumia. But he didn't. And although I would have preferred less Jello, he was energetic and entertaining.
Did I enjoy myself? Hell yes, I did.
They played with Jello McGruff the Crime Dog, The Lighter Side of Global Terrorism, and a little song called California Ubber Alles. They also did Halo of Flies, and a song I didn't recognize. Jello referenced Wesley Willis by doing the "rock over London, rock on Chicago" bit. Overall it was great.

SWEET!
Man I'd love to see em play Halo of Flies.
Sorry everyone, and much respect to the kennedy's and all am/rep bands but I went to see the melvins, not Jello. Certainly a song or two would have been fine, but that was way too much.
I have ZERO tolerance for cheap election politics at shows. If it were in regard to a movement to help the poor, environment, the career of ricky martin, etc, I wouldn't care.
I saw too many bands/comedians use that stupid 2000 contested election as a cheap way to get applause, and it is fucking lame. And of course now that November is approaching rapidly, I will have to endure it more again. Why the fuck would you say "out the door in 04" at a show? Why would anyone act like such a sheep and get all rowdy excited about it? Who the hell votes based on what entertainers say anyway? Is anyone that ignorant and impressionable?
As far as Trevor Dunn goes, I feel that I am qualified to say that they were horrid. I am a musician myself and spent 2 years in Orleans jazz scene. It was actually funny to watch all the people glued to that band because they thought it was something they were suposed to appreciate becasue of it's artistic merit, even if it sounded like rambling shit to them. Incoherent noise does not equal jazz. Also, they had to look at each other and nod when they were going to leave the sloppy hippie jam style noise and go back into one of their choreographed morse code sections. They are to jazz what Chef boy r Dee is to italian food.
I really can't say how much I was saddened by this show.
hey octobon, you're not going to kill yourself over, this are you?
wow, cool that people sign up for this board to say stupid shit...

What's you're problem? He's not saying stupid shit, he's just giving his opinion on the show, be it possitive or negative.
By the way, what's California Ubber Alles?

precisely why I don't like politics and music together that much. Certain people always think that everyone thinks the same way they do and feel free to start bashing.

find the better version by DK, it's called "We've got a bigger problem now"

the internet and message boards are all about varying OPINIONS, i dont see why it would bother anyone so much. Its not like he came on here and attacked the Melvins...he made it obvious that he is in fact a fan of the band this website is devoted to. Half of you guys have probably not even seen or heard Trevor Dunn's new band yet, so why dont you at least wait till the show until you attempt to shoot other peoples opinions down. Although i am a fan of a lot of DK stuff, i personally dont have much tolerance for a lot of politics in music either. But lyrics have always been secondary to the overall vibe the music creates for me, so im able to look past that with Jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedys. Its just a case of them being that damn good and Jello seems to have a pretty good sense of humour unlike a lot of these newer bands, i.e. Rage Against the Machine, that i cant stomach one bit.
oh yeah, i guess i just broke my pact to not enter the show reviews section until after i see them on my leg of the tour. Oh well, I couldnt help it, im getting anxious....i dont get to see them till the end of the month. Not too far off i guess.

Man I wish I had thought of these statements! Too funny.

Just a song that was on an
album that probably came out before you were born guy. Actually Buzz, Dale , Kevin and Jello are probably old enough to be your dad. Jello could even be your grandad!
I just think its kinda fucked up that the newest people here have posted negative posts as the first thing they have done here...and i think thats... gay.
I think any honest input here is good input... a variety of opinions can strengthen this board likewise any other message board. some people are very touchy on the subjects of the melvins and music in general. We can all argue about terminology as well... like it's a bold statement to really come out and say TDC is really jazz, and if I were to side with that notion I sure wouldn't compare them to.. let's say ornette coleman or even a john zorn project. I personally like their sound and many may not, but I wouldn't knock anyone for trying to make something happen..... I hope eveyone (including octobon) in this thread stick around for more musical discussion in the future...

I'm going to the Sept 13th Pittsburgh show, I'll post my thoughts afterward as soon as I can.
Anyhow, I'm sorry to hear that so many of you can't stomach Trevor Dunn Trio . . . I've never actually seen them live, but I've heard a lot of boots. I think they're fantastic. Most people just won't get it, but I'm used to that.

That makes you the third or fourth person to be going on this board.
I'm going too.
I think it's more accurate to describe T.D.T.C. as a jazz/rock group rather than just straight up jazz as there was moderate use of feedback and various other techniques more at home with rock within their set. It was basically fusion and I think they were good for what they were doing.
One thing I was finding myself wish for when hearing them, was wishing Mr. Bungle to re-form because we basically have the splintered shards of this great band within T.D.T.C.'s rock/jazz, Secret Chiefs 3's arabic/surf/electronic and Mike Patton's versatile vocal acrobatics in various side bands. I wish they would settle their differences. Who knows, maybe some inventive mixer will take these groups and create a cool mash-up for those who are yearning for a Bungle reunion.
Are the guys in Bungle mad at each other?
Quote from: Dog TiredAre the guys in Bungle mad at each other?
I don't really know the details, but I know they disbanded for some reason. I am just making an assumption that there is something up.

just where does one finds these boots?
youll find the answer in the german movie "das boot"

First question....Alot of people
Second question....Yes, and an aweful lot of people fit in that group.
My question is this. Are you going to find a cure for excessive whining?
does anyone else see the hypocrisy?
octobon wants to express his opinion, but doesn't think Jello Biafra, who once ran for mayor of San Francisco, should express his....
i myself think Jello is intelligent and articulate, as well as energetic and outspoken. maybe that is why he is such an interesting entertainer who has sold thousands of records, while no-one is apparently paying any money to see octobon -
the only thing i will say against Jello is that he has gotten a little chubby for crowd surfing -
guess Dale has outgrown his bikini briefs, too -
btw: California Uber Alles verses were updated with references to Arnold and Ashcroft - very pertinent, in my opinion....
the show itself was great in every respect but one, Trevor Dunn's band was challenging and brave, but the Double Door crowd was talking so loud you could only hear half. the Melvins played the hits, pulled out a few surprise covers, and balanced it all with some weird experimental noise - perfectly paced and executed, again, my opinion. of the dozen or so times i have seen them since Edge of the Looking Glass in 1991(?) this is surely one of the best all around -
the single thing which i feel negative about, and it seems to get worse every time i see them, is the crowd - there is a definite increase in yahoo-pinheads - by where i was standing some inbreeds were lighting things on fire, ladyfingers or some wimpy fireworks, talking (shouting) non-stop -
to make up for octobon's lack of support, i bought 3 t-shirts -
'HAPPY HALLOWEEN BITCH"

i wonder if people are suddenly going to get more 'political' after Bush re-instates the draft next February.....
I Why would anyone act like such a sheep and get all rowdy excited about it? Who the hell votes based on what entertainers say anyway? Is anyone that ignorant and impressionable?
All of California?
Not not be a dick, but...if I am not mistaken, the most populated state in the union just elected a fucking Austrian body builder/ "actor" as its' governor. Also, if I am not mistaken, it wasn't too many years ago when our president was another "actor" named Ronald Reagan. We also have another state governed by a pro-wrestler. Whodathunkit? Looks like entertainment and politics go hand in hand around here. As far as pop musicians being outspoken politically...It has been happening FOREVER. Some of our lands most beloved song writers have had an overtly political bent to them. Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, etc. Not that they are in the same league as the MELVINS. And that brings me back to, the MELVINS...in Detroit. Fantastic. This was my 8th Melvins show, and they get more enjoyable each time. Great mix of classics, more recent classics and sonic mindfuck. Plus Jello signing California Uber Alles being backed up by a FAR more musically talented ensemble than the original DKs. Just my 2 cents worth.

Don't assume I don't listen to "old" music because of my age, cause I do. I'm just not really into the Dead Kennedys, so I wouldn't know the song.
And, yeah, I think Kevin is a year younger than my parents. :P
